TITLE JAGGIES

I find the titles created in FCE or Livetype have strong jaggies, when those created in iMovie or imported from Photoshop are much better. But iMovie and Photoshop titles are too static, I want things to move. Any suggestion to improve them?

Hi
There are at least two levels on this Q:
• iMovie'08 to 11 can not deliver Interlaced SD-Video over to iDVD but discard every second line resulting in a quality loss. I use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut
• The way one goes from iM'08 to 11 to iDVD matters to a GREAT degree. I never use in any version of iMovie "Share to iDVD" as this set's off iMovie rendering function - and it's bad. I do.
Share to Media Browser - and as Large - NOT HD or other resolution as this too degrades the out-come.

  • Titling Best Practices

    Hello
Working with AE and Premier I am starting to wonder what the best way of titling my videos in Premier is.
When I use AE I can get all sorts of fancy results but sometimes the quality of the edges of the fonts and stuff looks jaggy.
My project is video from a consumer camera, a Panasonic PV-GS150 to be exact, and although it is a good camera the video isnt super quality.
After I capture my footage in Premier I get it laid out and then I use AE to create Compositions that I import and drop into the video project in Premier and place it over the footage to create my titles. I have had differing success. Sometimes it is super crisp and sometimes it shows a case of the jaggies.
Could this be caused by interlacing or the type of scan that I set the render of the video too? I have been using progressive scan lately and I think the video quality of some of my latest projects have been good.
Being a perfectionist I would like to know if there is something I am doing wrong. Is there a setting that would cause a little jaggyness, or some process that I could be doing different?
I was thinking about taking the section of video where I want my titles and putting it in the AE project and then putting the AE comp into the timeline in premier in place of where I want the titles to go.
    What is the best way?

    Have you read the
"Best practices for creating text and vector graphics for video" section of After Effects CS3 Help on the Web?
If you don't feel like clicking, here's the body of that document:
"Text that looks good on your computer screen as you are creating it can sometimes look bad when viewed in a final output movie. These differences can arise from the device used to view the movie or from the compression scheme used to encode the movie. The same is true for other vector graphics, such as shapes in shape layers. Keep the following in mind as you create and animate text and vector graphics for video:
    * You should always preview your movie on the same sort of device that your audience will use to view it, such as an NTSC video monitor. (See Preview on an external video monitor.)
    * Avoid sharp color transitions, especially from one highly saturated color to its complementary color. Sharp color transitions are difficult for many compression schemessuch as those used by MPEG and JPEG standardsto encode. This can cause visual noise near sharp transitions. For analog television, the same sharp transitions can cause spikes outside the allowed range for the signal, also causing noise.
    * When text will be over moving images, make sure that the text has a contrasting border (such as a glow or a stroke) so that the text is still readable when something the same color as the fill passes behind the text.
    * Avoid thin horizontal elements, which can vanish from the frame if they happen to be on an even scan line during an odd field, or vice versa. The height of the horizontal bar in a capital H, for example, should be three pixels or greater. You can thicken horizontal elements by increasing font size, using a bold (or faux bold) style, or applying a stroke. (See Formatting characters.)
    * When animating text to move verticallyfor scrolling credits, for examplemove the text vertically at a rate in pixels per second that is an even multiple of the field rate for the interlaced video format. This prevents a kind of twitter that can come from the text movement being out of phase with the scan lines. For NTSC, good values include 0, 119.88, and 239.76 pixels per second; for PAL, good values include 0, 100, and 200 pixels per second.
Apply the Autoscroll - Vertical animation preset in the Behaviors category to quickly create a vertical text crawl.
Fortunately, many problems with text in video and compressed movie formats can be solved with one simple technique: Apply Fast Blur to the text layer, with a Blurriness setting between 1 and 2. A slight blur can soften color transitions and cause thin horizontal elements to expand."

  • Why does my type look bitmapped (jaggies)

Why does my title type look bitmapped (jaggies)? It's fine in iMovie but looks crappy once I burn the DVD. The max. resolution is 720 x 540.

  • Web Part Title Style

How do we change style of Web part title

    Hi Jugnu,
You can use the IE developer tool (by pressing F12 key) to get the HTML source of particular selection and get the class name / DIV ID or any other unique value to identify that portion. Use that unique identity to change the style of Web part title or any
other design and you can write the code snippet in Content editor Web Part on that page.
    <style type="text/css">
    #WebPartTitleWPQ3 h2
    background:red !important;
    color:gray !important;

  • Titling in AE, or Premiere or PS?

A bit of a newbie question here; I should know this.  Anyway, where should I do my titles?  Should I do them in AE, Premiere, or PS?  I know how to use all 3 programs.  I have already done these tests by creating 1920x1080 24p projects in both Premiere and AE, using the same settings, same text, same fonts and sizes.  My eye seems to think that the AE titles look a bit crsiper than the Premiere titles do on my 50" Plasma.  If that's true and I do all my HD titles in AE, but then export them to my larger Premiere project, won't they then be rasterized by Premiere and subsequently look worse?  Does this sound correct?
    Thanks,
    Ragnar

Szalam, thanks for the reply.  I do want my text to do a lot of things so I'll use AE; I was just wondering if AE text is better quality than Premiere or PS, as in, I think it is vector based so I wouldn't get jaggies.  As for output, I exported all tests as an uncompressed AVI.

  • Add Title w/ Transparent background

Earlier today I learned through the list how to add a title to the entire length of a movie.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to have this title (URL actually) added without a background to the title (transparent background so all your that shows up on the screen are the letters).
I created the text in photoshop (with transparent background) and am experimenting with it.
Several formats have worked fine as long as I'm wanting a background to my text (for a "stripe subtitle" look), but the only format that has worked for getting a transparent background has been .gif
    Am I doing something wrong?
The .gif hasn't been very clear, so I'm hoping that another format will work.
    Any hints would be appreciated.
    Luke

Make your file in .png format.
Set the dimensions as close as possible to what will be used in your video so you'll only need to position it in the Movie Properties window.
Set an "alpha" channel for the background color and don't "anti-alias" the text portion to help reduce "jaggies".
Open this file with QuickTime Pro and copy it. Make a selection on your video (in and out points) and choose "Add to Selection & Scale" (Edit menu).
Open the Movie Properties window, highlight the new Video track and click the Visual Settings tab.
Set the "Offset" to position it over your video. In the lower left of the Visual Settings window is a menu for Transparency. Choose "Straight Alpha" and use Save As to complete your file.
The .gif format is not the right choice because it is only 8 bit color.
I used text tracks and QuickTime Pro version 6 in most of my videos. It allows me to set transparency colors where version 7 has left them out:

  • Avoiding "jaggies" in iMovie - all the things I've tried

I'm well aware of the "jaggies" problems in iMovie as I've had a heck of a time trying to get my logo to render well. I've tried so many methods, and I still can't seem to get anything even remotely clean enough to look good. I was hoping that someone could take a look at what I've tried, and 1) correct me if I'm doing something wrong, or 2) give me advice on other work-arounds.
Here's what I've tried (with varying success):
    1) making sure that Ken Burns was turned on when I imported the photo (no zoom, but the box was still checked). -- rendered pretty poorly.
    2) exported vector logo (from Illustrator) as a flash file. Opened file in Flash (still looking perfectly clean), and then exported as a QT movie. Imported the QT movie into iMovie (slightly better results, but still not great).
    3) My most innovative approach: Used FontLab to create a new font -- using my vector logo as one of the characters in that font. Opened my iMovie, used the Titles feature to display a title with my font (my logo was assigned to the letter "d" so I just typed "d" in the titles section, and voila, there was my logo). To my surprise, this still
    didn't produce great results.
Additional info: I am aware the iMovie doesn't render things that well (as you're working on the movie), so because I have QT pro, I exported my iMovies each time on the highest quality setting for QT. I then played the exported movie on the best setting to test it out, and none of the above options looked good.
Does anyone know of any other way to make vector/logo graphics look good in the final rendering?
    - Does iMovie '06 improve this at all?
    - Has anyone else tried other methods of using Flash to export QT movies with success?
    - What is the ideal output resolution of an exported QT Movie to be used in iMovie (not widescreen)?
    Any help would be appreciated!

I couldn't tell you about the nitty-gritty ..though Karl can probably do that.
I'll just mention, though, that video is normally seen on a TV ..unless you're creating a movie to be seen only in QuickTime, on a computer monitor.
And TV usually provides interlaced pictures (..stop me if you know this already). iMovie doesn't show interlacing on a computer screen: that's not how computer screens behave. In other words, the appearance on your Mac screen will not be as smooth as the same video will be on a TV.
[.."Interlacing" means that half the resolution - just the intermediate 'odd' lines of the picture - appears onscreen every 50th or 60th of a second, immediately followed by the other half - the intermediate 'even' lines - so that they blur or merge together onscreen to give a combined double resolution of what you're likely to see on a computer monitor ..and that way the jagged steps visible on a computer screen disappear when the in-between lines slide in between on a TV screen..]
So if you're still worried, and if the final movie is to be seen on a TV, try - if you haven't - exporting your movie back to tape, and then playing that tape on a TV screen, and see if the logo is still jagged there.
If your movie is for playing only on a computer monitor, a touch of Gaussian Blur to remove exceptionally sharp edges often helps, and remember not to have sharp-edged colour contrasts, which video finds difficult to handle, and try not to use very saturated (pure) red, which video often can't easily handle, nor pure, bright white: tone that down a bit with a hint of colour or grey, and try not to make it more than about 70% white.
Video isn't like static graphics or print; it consists of changing waveforms, and sharp junctions of sharp waveforms (sharp edges to objects, abrupt changes of pure colour) produce 'interference' or 'pointy waveforms' which become 'clipped', or chopped off at their peaks ..which gives unpleasant artifacts onscreen.
If you have a few spare minutes, read what Adam Wilt has to say about onscreen graphics, just in case that provides any help..

  • Titles on plasma screens

    Hi everyone,
I have trouble with creating smooth titling for video work that gets shown on something as big as 62" Plasma screens.
The video work is a mix of DV footage, powerpoint slides and titling created in FCP and it all looks neat up to the point where I put it out as an mpg for the DVD and show it on those plasmas: the titling, mainly the one created in FCP looks really jagged and pixelated.
I tried to look up some previous posts on the subject and read that it has to do with Plasma screens working in progressive mode and causing problems to interlaced video.
I rendered the videos out in progress mode (after I tried usual interlaced) through compressor and tried various other options but it doesn't get any better. Is this something I have to live with once it gets to that size of viewing format or is there a specific title tool/plug in/ other application that I should use?
The final piece is loaded with text so of course it is kind of nice to be able to work on it in FCP as I have freedom to move the individual video layers around in case the client decides to change something afterall.
There is no problem from the original DV footage...it's just the titling which looks absolutely poor.
    Thanks for all advice!
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thin fonts and serif fonts will tend to get a bit crunchy upon conversion to mpeg.
When you say "dv" do you mean 4:3? If you are working 4:3 and it is filling the screen on a 62" tv, it's getting blown up larger than screen resolution which will increase the jaggies. Plus interlacing issues as you mentioned...
    Good luck.

  • Some russian titles do not show up in the artists' lists

Hi, I encountered a strange issue with some songs with a russian title with my Nano 2G. The issue appears with some songs, which I downloaded from the bands' websites, e.g. http://www.pelagea.ru. I copied the title from the website and enter it in iTunes. This works fine. Also on my iPod, the titles show up when played, in the playlists and in the list of all songs. However they are missing in the list of the artist (Music -> Artists -> <Band>).
I tried to convert the ID3 tags in iTunes, which was proposed in some Apple document, and I also deleted the title and typed it manually using the russian keyboard - without success. So I also tried to download the MP3 files again and to enter the title directly with the keyboard - no success.
Now I wonder whether this is a bug in the iPod software (version 1.1.1), since the titles are shown everywhere except in the artists' lists, or whether the MP3 files are broken, since other songs with a russian title (downloaded or imported from CD) work as supposed. Any idea how to make the songs from the webiste above working? I guess the same cure would also fix the others, with which I am having trouble.

  • CD song titles do not show up on a different Mac

Why...? After laboriously typing title info into my Playlist of original, non-commercial, not posted-on-the-net tunes...does this info always show up on a different computer as 'Track 01, Track 02, etc.' on the CD I burned from this Playlist?! This wreaks havoc on demo disc process. I want to send to these out to people, and it takes an unnecessary amount of time to re-type in the info. Does anyone know of a fix for this iTunes problem? Or a better software program?

Does anyone know of an audio CD burner that will consistently label the original information?
Audio CDs do NOT have info except for CD-TEXT, no matter which program you use.
The Redbook audio CD standard does not allow for anything except CD-TEXT.
iTunes will write CD-TEXT but it will not read CD-TEXT.
You can burn data CDs and all the info will be retained and can be played in iTunes.

  • How do I change the way the title/author appear and is there any way to remove pages on EPUBs?

    Hi all--
I am having a really hard time--I am trying to transfer EPUBs from my Win 7 comp to my Nook Tablet. I bought a lot of books from several non-BN sites because they were lots cheaper and were also sold in bundles--but the site was messed up and sent the books in PDF form rather than EPUB.  PDF files won't read like a regular book on my Nook Tablet, so my friend offered to convert them to EPUB for me.
Most of the books turned out fine, but some of them now have a few extra pages at the beginning before the cover image and the correct title and author are not displaying--it seems to instead show the filepath where the file was saved on m friend's computer (C:\My Computer/Documents and Settings...etc.)
So, what I would like to do is be able to edit the EPUB files so I can delete the extra pages at the beginning so the correct cover image will be displayed and to be able to change the file's data sp it will show (and be searchable by) the correct title and author.
I am new to all this, so I appreciate any help you can offer.  Thank you SO much for your help!!
    --Jamie
P.S.  Having the title and author show up correctly so they are searchable and appear in the correct place on my Nook Tablet is the top priority--correct cover pages would be nice aesthitically, but it is not that important.
****ALSO--does anyone know of an app or anything for the Nook Tablet that would allow PDF files to be read just like an EPUB/B&N=purchased book?  Currently when I open a PDF, it shows the page in TINY print--you can use pinching to zoom in, but then the file enlarges so it is bigger than the screen, making it very hard to read.  I can't figure out any way to enlarge the text but still fits the page like an EPUB does, so I'm wondering if there's an app that would do that--it's hard because you can't try apps before you buy them and I can't teel if they will work from the descriptions.

For sideloaded content the nook pulls the metadata from ePub file itself.  I would suggest looking at a program like Sigil or Calibre that will let you edit the metadata in the book to make it appear like you want.
For the PDF vs ePub - No, that's the way PDFs work (think of them as graphics, not text), wheres ePubs are Web Pages - so  no you can't them to behave exactly alike without converting the files.

  • Print the report title

    Hello All,
I have a report page with some search item. When I print the page the title does not appear on the output page.
How I can print the report and its title on the output page.
    any quick help please

    Hi Mohammad
I allow users to download reports using the Interactive Reports Region.
If you use that method then you can insert a title at the top of the report by populating the Report Region > Print Attributes (TAB) > Page Header
Note: This is available when using APEX coupled with Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher. It does not work with "CSV" output.
    Kind regards

  • How can I save multiple titles under the same DVD?

I use HandBrake to rip DVD's into iTunes. How can I save multiple titles under the same DVD? For instance, I have a Jimi Hendrix documentary that comes with special features, such as concert performances. I would like to have the main feature and the special features saved in my iTunes under the same title, perhaps as different 'tracks' (kind of like how different songs can be saved under the same album).
Is there a way for me to do this, or am I chasing phantoms?

*This response is for iPhoto 11 (v9). If you're using an earlier version, please post back and let us know. Troubleshooting steps are not the same for different versions. To find out which iPhoto you have: iPhoto Menu -> About iPhoto)*
Duplicate the photo first. (Photos -> Duplicate). This means that you will have multiple copies of the master as well as the edited version.
If you use versions like this often and wish to have only one master then you can do this with Aperture.

  • Printing w/ Titles in iCal

I have created a calendar group to be printed, however iCal is showing me no option to print the calendar with a title/header, and will only display the month at the top of the page.  Is it possible to print this calendar displaying a title across the top? I have created calendars for many different projects, and want to have them all clearly labeled once they have been printed. thanks.

I'm adding a "me too" too. This is making me crazy. I have about 10 calendars that I have to uncheck to print one calendar every day!
