To erase and reinstall Mavericks, do I need anything more than an internet connection?

In the Apple support doc OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X, it doesn't say anything about a USB drive, but in all of the articles online, it suggests downloading Mavericks onto a USB drive first. I assume that an internet connection is all that is needed, is that right? Or should I go the USB route?

You can do either - our models can boot to Internet Recovery or you can download Macvericks, wuit when it starts to install and use the "Install OS Mavericks.app" in your Applications folder to create a bootable installation USB thumb drive. You'll need a 8GB+ thumb drive and you can use DiskMaker X to create the bootacle installation drive.
Personally, I always keep a thumb frive with the latest installer.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • Computer won't let me erase and reinstall mavericks

i have the latest update of mevericks and my mackbook pro just left warrantty, so it's whatever model that was new about 2 years ago. We paid for all the extra stuff.
the problem is that i woke up this morning and my laptop was left unpowered. it happens from time to time, so i plug it in and restart, and up pops the Disk Utility window. okay whatever. i guess there was a glitch or something, i don't know. I go to reinstall the OS X Mavericks, but it fails, saying that it can't repair it. I must erase it first. Okay, so i follow the instructions on "erase and reinstall"
except that i can't erase the OS X, all the options are greyed out. I can't seem to do anything about this, and my Apple Care conveniently ran out.
i've been into my local Apple Store about 3 times with complaints about my battery or computer being slow in the last year. I keep being shoo'd away.

"i have a disk for snow leopard, but it makes beeping noises when i try to install from that disk."
    So LowEndMac:
    http://lowendmac.com/2011/17-macbook-pro-late-2011/
    says:
"ships with Mac OS X 10.7.2, does work with Mac OS X 10.6.6 and later"
That installer is most likely 10.6.0, if it's the Retail Installer. So it needs 10.6.6 and is telling that disk is too old.
You also might consider an SSD from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC
I put one in my early 2011 MBP 13" 8 GB RAM and keep asking myself why I waited to long. It's been like a new machine only faster!

  • I had to erase and reinstall mavericks to hd, now i cannot boot up , i get a folder with flashing Q mark and i cannot boot from dvd drive...Ideas please

    hi
its a long and sorry story, i have a imac running mavericks
a few days ago i noticed that the dvd drive was ejecting every disc i put in, so i decide to check hd with onyx and reset permissions etc
onyx said the smart status couldnt be checked and i should check hd using disk utility.
i did this and it came up that hd had errors , so i ran the repair facility....it came up with disk can not be repaired, reformat and reinstall mavericks
    this i did.
i  reinstalled mavericks into mac hd, which took about 3 hrs, i then rebooted and a folder with flashing Qmark appeared, i cant get past this at all.
i have tried to use internet recovery but it comes up with 6002f error, and the dvd drive still does not accept boot disk, so i am at a lose as to how to proceed
    anybody got any ideas?
    thanks
    L

If your hard drive has SMART errors then it is failing and should be replaced. Disk Utility cannot fix SMART reported errors.

  • Erase and Reinstall need some help

After upgrading one on top of another on top of another a few times, It is time completely erase and reinstall OSX. At one time there was a migration guide somewhere, (Kappy?) that went through some tips of erase and reinstall — Where Microsoft information is stored, e-mail, contacts, etc. What about delete and reinstall Adobe Creative Cloud? Is Migration Assistant the best way to do this now?
    Advice appreciated.

Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones. If you want to make a clean install, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair  the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button to select GUID. Reinstall the OS. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want. I recommend Setup Assistant.
    Clean Install

  • Should I wipe and reinstall Mavericks... or what would you suggest?

    Hi everyone!
So I'd like to ask you for your advice here... I bought my MacBook Air 13" in fall 2013 (I've got the latest model) which came with Mountain Lion. I've been using Mavericks since its roll-out, but I'm very concerned about the quality of the newest version. What happens regularly to me:
    1) The log-in screen: when I turn on my mac, but log-in screen animation seems pretty. Nothing that really concers me, but the animation in 10.8 was pretty smooth.
    2) Finder: sometimes I have to relaunch finder even many times in a row via cmd+alt+esc when renaming pictures or files.
    3) Adobe Dremweaver CC: crashes a lot (I found out that it was a java problem, but I updated and it still crashes a lot.)
    4) Apps crashing quite a lot overally, mainly apps like Mail.
    5) I get a lot of the colored moving circle ("Please Wait..."), overally I'd say the system has gone down since I installed it.
My question is: should I wipe the device clean and re-install Mavericks? I like and use a lot of the new features. But if I should wipe it, how? Once I did it, I reinstalled the system but the data remained and I'd like to go factory clean and set it all up again.
Thanks a lot for answering and giving hits,
    J.

    Hi jon_xo,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You can use the steps at this link if you'd like to erase and reinstall OS X Mavericks:
OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243
If you have already tried reinstalling Mavericks, you may want to avoid restoring data from a Time Machine backup in order to start fresh. It does sound like you're encountering a lot of unexpected behavior with your Mavericks installation.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • What's the best way to erase and reinstall Lion?

I'm a little confused by the various posts I've read about erasing and reinstaling lion.
My MBP is about 4 years old.  I upgraded to lion last summer and it never worked great, but over the last 3-6 months its been dragging.  I want to start fresh.  I've uploaded all of my personal files to a sky drive and then copied all of my extremely irreplaceable photos to two other hard drives.  Now I'm just fuzzy about my next step.
I've read I need to make a boot disk, or a thumb drive or I can do it right from my system.  I don't care which way or what I need, but I want it fresh with no chance of curroption.
Thanks for any and all direction.
    Josh

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • Erase and Reinstall - Could not unmount disk?

    Hi there....
I'm running an iBook G4 with Tiger 10.4.11
After a freeze and manual power off, I powered up and got stuck at the grey Apple. Tried to start in safe mode - no luck. Started up off the install disk and ran Disk Utility - tells me Disk Could Not Unmount.
Spoke with Apple rep. - ran fsck in Single User Mode - got "Invalid Node STructure"
I've accepted that my files are lost - I have a good backup so that's that.
STarted up and got to Disk Utility again - want to do an Erase and Reinstall. Go to erase HD and am told "Could Not Unmount Disk"
    ....do I have any options??

Well, take into account I'm at a distance here & just guessing it's the HD, but yes, if it is that & you get it replaced, you should be able to install OSX just fine... and likely be much faster with a new HD in it.
    Here's some hard drives...

    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Powerbook-iBook-Macbook-Hard-Drive-Upgrades-Pro-Po werbook--iBook-Hard-Drives-p-1-c-517.html
Ultimately - should I be purchasing a new HD and putting it into this G4 - or look in to buying a new one altogether? ...I'd really rather not right now.
Depends what you do with it & such, but if it meets your needs it may pay to have it fixed, but checkout the prices at the Apple Store on refurb MacBooks & MacBook Pros to better gauge for yourself.

  • Why did my Macbook Pro got so slow after formatting and reinstalling Mavericks?

I had Mavericks a month ago, then i upgraded to Yosemite, and my computer got extremely slow, so i formatted it and reinstalled Mavericks again, i feel it's slower than the last time i used it with Mavericks, i have no idea why. i erased my hard drive and reinstalled from an external drive. Seriously i thought it was going to be faster than how i had it before since it's going to be more fresh without so many apps that i don't use often...
Is there anything that i could do?
    Thanks

This is the new result i got just surfing on Safari:
This is what i got from the app EtreCheck:

  • Erasing and reinstalling my mac pro hard drive

I have an older Mac Pro (2006 I think).
I want to erase and reinstall the hard drive. Once the disk is clean, is there a way to install OS directly to mountain lion? Or will I have to install from an ealier complete set of physical disks?

If it shipped with 10.4 and is a 2007 or earlier Mountain Lion is not supported, only up to Lion.
You download and save the Lion installer first and would need to have 10.6.8 to access the App Store.
Leave what you have as is, and just install a new system to another of the drive bays.

  • Erase and reinstall help - random shut off

I've been to diagnose my random shut off of my early '06 iMac Intel. It seems to shut down when I use a lot of memory.
I've done the AHT, resetting the PRAM, ran TechTools, and DiskWarrior.
It doesn't happen as frequently, but it still occurs. Shuts down randomly once a week. And I have to wait 10 minutes or more to start up again.
I saw a some users reinstalled OS X and it helped them.
SO FINALLY MY QUESTION, , I'M CURRENTLY RUNNING OS X 10.5.8 LEOPARD, BUT MY iMac ORIGINALLY CAME WITH TIGER 10.4.4, WHEN I ERASE AND REINSTALL DO I NEED TO USE THE ORIGINAL TIGER DISKS OR CAN I USE THE NEW LEOPARD?
Thank you for your help, I tried searching the forums but couldn't find an answer. Greatly appreciated.

ran Power Fractal and is still running for 15 minutes. Nothing happening. I'm not sure how to use the program. I messed with the colorspeed, i put it to 100. Put the max count to 131072. Zoom factor 10. I even opened up Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop all running at the same time.
You did great, doesn't seem to be what I suspected.
I noticed a shut off when free memory is 500 or less.
Fantastic obsevation, RAM is one of the hardest things to test for, RAM tests can only be trusted if they find a problem, not if they don't... seems OSX is a better RAM tester than any RAM test, that being said...

  • Can I access my files for backup before erasing and reinstalling?

I haven't been able to find a thread dealing with this specific problem, so I thought I should try my luck with a post...
On Friday, my computer crashed and I have not been able to start it again. First, I got the image of a blinking file folder with a ?, subsequent restarts have produced the normal grey screen with the apple, followed by a blue screen or by simply shutting off. Booting in Safe Mode also produces a blue screen.
Booting from the install disk (OS 10.4) allows me to open Disk Utility, but I cannot repair the disk: Invalid Node Structure. When booting from the OS 10.5 disk, I cannot perform a repair disk: the BOOTCAMP partition of the drive is normal, but the Hard Drive partition is greyed out and indicates that the drive is not mounted.
I just bought an external hard drive last week and have used Time Machine to create backups, but it looks like the backups do not actually contain files - just references to the structure of my computer. I have many files backed up, but I will lose many other files and applications if I try to erase and reinstall. Is there a way I can access those files now, so I can transfer them to the external drive before I try to erase and reinstall (or, worst case scenario, replace the HD)?

I thought I would try restoring the system through Time Machine, using my external HD. The restoration process seemed to go well (no messages or interruptions). I opened Disk Utility to check the HD. It is no longer greyed out and when checked, it comes up okay, no need for repairs. However...
I just booted up again without the Install Disk and I got a black screen this time, with large white text saying "Disk Error/ Press any key to restart".
I pressed many keys, none of which restarted the computer. I shut it down with the power button and am trying to startup again.
    Yikes!

  • Erase and reinstall 10.7 Lion

Hi. I have a MBP mid 2009 running on Lion. If I do a erase and reinstall, do I need the snow leopard DVDs during reinstall?

    No.
You can reformat (erase) the disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery
Don't forget to backup all important data before reformatting the disk.

  • Erase and reinstall macbook

How do I erase and reinstall my Macbook to it's original settings?

You'll need the original install disks that came with the MacBook. If you don't have those, call Apple at the appropriate phone number on this page and ask them to send you new ones. There may be a small charge.
Insert the disk and restart the computer holding down the "C" key during startup. On the first screen select your primary language for the install. Then look for Utilities and select Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and then the Erase tab. Click Erase. Quit Disk Utility. Go ahead and install the operating system and other software. Restart the computer. At this point you are back to where it came from the factory.
    Best of luck.

  • Unable to restore from Time Machine after an erase and reinstall - MacbookPro cannot access my old Time Machine backup volume. Desperate for help please?

My MacbookPro would not move past the Apple logo and spinning wheel for a number of hours.  After trying the numerous suggestions to solve the issue I eventually opted to erase and reinstall feeling confident my Time Machine backups would come to the rescue.  After a successful erase and reinstall I tried to restore all my data from my TIme Capsule using Command-R during start up and by using the Migration Assistant.  Neither worked and I have received messages to the effect that the backup volumes on my Time Capsule cannot be access because I have entered a wrong password or because the backup volume is damaged.
When I open my Time Capsule in Finder and click on my sparsebundle I get an eror message saying that the disk image could not be opened and that the resource is temporarily unavailable.
Desperate for some help and comfort that many years of personal data have not been lost.
    Thank you.
