TOC Question

In my TOC I have a number of topics that are common to all
books in the TOC; for example an orientation topic. When the common
topic is clicked on in one book it opens the page correctly, but it
also opens the first book in the TOC that has a link to that page
and places the user in that book instead of the one they were in.
It doesn't open any book with that topic page between the first
occurrence and the book the user is in. I created the TOC by
dragging and dropping the topics into the TOC books.
I am using RH7 and IE 6.0
Thanks for any help

Hi again
Creating a redirect does involve a smidgeon of HTML editing
behind the scenes. But I compare it to changing the air filter on
your car. Even someone not versed in mechanics can usually pull it
off.
Here is what you do. Visit the scary HTML code in RoboHelp.
Near the top should be a list of tags that begin with code
that looks like this:
<meta.
Somewhere in this list of tags you insert one that looks like
this:
<meta HTTP-EQUIV=refresh
CONTENT="0;URL=SomeFolder/SomePage.HTM">
Just change the SomeFolder/SomePage.HTM to reflect the path
you need. If you like, just create a regular hyperlink on the page
that points to the page you want. Then edit the link and copy what
you see there.
Yes, you will need a separate redirect page for each TOC node
you wish to point to the topic. The trick here is that you never
directly link to the topic from the TOC. You always use the
redirects. This prevents the TOC from synchronizing to the wrong
section. And you always get the same topic to appear! This way it
only has to exist in your project once.
If you are using RoboHelp 7, I suppose you might accomplish
the same effect without using redirects by creating the topic
content inside a snippet. Then create multiple topics that each use
the snippet.
Cheers... Rick

  • TOC Questions portrait view

I see the TOC is based on the chapter titles of the book, I also see that you can change the styles and I need to know the following.
Is there a way to add any other text to the titles for instance:
chapter 1 - is the title ( which displays in the TOC)
either an image ( for each chapter) as I see if I do that the image appears in all.
    OR
another text box in each chapter with different text?
    R

If I understand your  question, looking at the image you can see I changed section to have a title of Hope & Crosby and this will show in the TOC.
You can re-name the Book Title, Chapters and Sections in the book tree simply by mousing over to select and re-type your names.
What you change there is reflected in the TOC
The default text boxes for these are what appers in the TOC.
    As it apears in TOC
    Hope that helps..

  • Idle TOC Question

Idle question...can you change the font color (and font, for that matter if you wish to use something besides Arial which neither the client nor I wish to do) in the TOC and the index in a compiled  help file?
The topics use a customized color for the default font and it'd be really, really cool if the TOC and index could have the same color.
If you can do this, where and how?
    Thanks!
    Jo

    Hi Jo.
You can change the font, font size and font colour by clicking on the Advanced Settings button inside the Microsfoft HTML Help single source layout properties. This dialog has two tabs "Index" and "TOC Styles" from which the Select Font button allows you to change the font characteristics.

  • Basic TOC questions

    Hi everyone.
With InDesign CC, is it still necessary to build the TOC in the last page of the document?
Once a toc is built, if the document is updated, does the toc update automatically or does it need to be rebuilt?
If in an .indb, does Synchronization rebuild the toc?
    Thanks

You can generate a TOC on any page you like. At the start of a document it's called a Table of Contents.
at the end of documents you're more likely to find an index - as per formats of books in general.
And no updating the page numbering does not update the TOC when sychronised.
You have to use the Layout>Update Table of Contents
I think you would benefit from a few books
It's not CC but will get you going

It's not great to be firing random questions at a forum - probably best if you took some lessons or time yourself to learn the different areas
If you're still stuck there's no problem in coming back to ask for direction.
At the moment I think you need to take a step back.
When I was learning InDesign I found having InDesign books on my desk was far faster and a better way of learning the software.
    But it's up to you

  • Toc question & screen writing on tablet

Hi, I'm currently running the demo and doing some research for a client to determine if Captivate has the functionality they need.
They have previously used another application with which they could 'write' on screen using a tablet pc & pen. This enabled them to highlight items during a presentation & write simple notes that might be appropriate to a slide.
Is this possible with Captivate? I'm guessing it can be done using the built in software on a tablet pc & simply recording the presentation using Captivate?
Another issue is the table of contents that is generated. Is there any way to wrap the items so if the toc contains lengthy titles they drop onto the next line? Also, is it possible to customise the toc menu styling even more than the various styles available (ie: using css or another method)?

I have found that if the user hovers their mouse over the title in the TOC it will show the entire title. Also, you can create sub text in the TOC.

  • CS5: TOC Question

I'm trying to set up my table of contents for a book document. Below is a screenshot of the TOC as it is right now.
The TOC looks fine, I guess, but the elements are not in order. The three headings (System Introduction, Overview, and Chapter 1) are not in the same order as on the page. I want the Chapter 1 heading to come before System Introduction. It does so on the Chapter cover pages:
Chapter 1 is a specific paragraph style in a text frame by itself. System Introduction and all the other following text share a text frame. System Introduction is a specific paragraph style. Meanwhile, Overview shares its style with that of a specific heading (the blue elements on the TOC image), since I want all of those elements to appear in the same style and positioning on the TOC.
Here is what my TOC settings look like:
I have the Chapter # style (the style applied to Chapter 1 in the above screenshot) as the first item in the TOC. I want it to share the positioning and style of the Chapter Title, but I don't want a page number for it. All other styles have a page number position assigned with a leader, and they are positioned at the correct level. I just don't understand why the Chapter # style is appearing in such an odd place in the TOC.

Well, the TOC harvests character styles for inclusion in a really regular, top-to-bottom, left-to-right order. It's not looking for styles as it does so, but for frames. If the blue guides show where the Chapter 1 frame begins and ends, and if the rest of the text is in a frame that takes up the entire page within the margins, then of course the TOC is finding the main-body-text frame before it finds the Chapter 1 frame, becuse the main body text frame is closer to the top left than the Chapter 1 frame.

  • TOC questions.

I have a fairly large document in iBooks Author. I have three chapters that are not loading the opening photos in the TOC and three other chapters that are loading a generic chapter title in place of the actual chapter name in the TOC. I'm stumped.

  • Multiple TOCs Security Question

    Hello,
Just getting started with RH7. I'm building a project with
approx. 30 TOCs and will be limiting access to them for multiple
user types for a software application. I had a question from the
tech group and am wondering if someone can help. Forgive me if this
seems like a 'duh' question... just not thinking about this
straight. The tech guys are concerned that if we publish multiple
TOCs that they then integrate into each of the user groups for the
app, security from one group to another might be an issue. The
system is educational and the concern is that students might be
able to get their hands on the help files since they sit on the
server. Again - new at this and want to know if anyone has
encountered this or if there is something that I can tell them to
help them wrap their minds around what is actually produced when
webhelp is published so that they can build in the proper security.
As a further note, each user group enters a password protected
    area.
Thanks so much for not laughing and for helping!

Hi PeggyUF and welcome to our community
Wow, 30 TOCs? I'm unclear on exactly how you will be limiting
access. Are you building 30 different versions of your help? That's
the only way I can fathom using 30 different TOCs. You certainly
can't do it by publishing a single WebHelp to a common area. You
would need to generate WebHelp 30 different times to 30 different
folders. Then publish each output folder to a corresponding server
folder. Then restrict each user to only seeing their assigned
    folder.
    Hopefully that helps... Rick

  • Three Questions About TOC

    1. OK, I'm stumped. How can I accomplish this simple task. I refer to adding the "dots" one normally adds between the section entries on the left and the page number reference on the right.
    2. How can I keep references to books italicized in the TOC as in the headings as they appear in the body of the document?
    3. I would like to include a heading for "Endnotes" at the end of my TOC with a page number as well, but it doesn't seem to link. Also, On the page where my Endnotes begin I would like to place the heading "Endnotes" but when I attempt to enter it, only one letter is added at a time.
    Thanks.

    I can answer question #1.
Select the TOC, then the Text Inspector. At the bottom left in the Inspector, select the 'Tab Stop' that's set up for the TOC. In my case it was '6.1944 in'. Then, at the bottom right in the Inspector, select the 'Leader' you'd like...in this case dots...

  • Cp6, TOC and Bookmarking Question

Hello, I'm running Cp6 on Win7 and have a question about the TOC and the "bookmark" icon.  When Self-Paced Learning is enabled in the TOC Settings, and then the learner opens the SWF file, clicks to the left of a slide title to display the "bookmark" icon, closes the course and then reopens it, isn't this the feature that enables Cp6 to remember where the learner left off?  So when the leaner opens the file again, a box pops up asking if they want to continue where they left off or not.  If they click OK then the captivate file begins playing where the leaner left off.
If I'm correnct, then what happens when the learner clicks the "bookmark" feature next to several slide titles and then exits the course?
    Thanks!

Nope.  The little bookmark icon is just a way for the user to indicate a topic in the TOC that he or she would like to come back to and look at again sometime.  It's a totally different thing to the 'bookmarking' functionality that allows a user to leave the module and come back at some later time to resume where they left off.
    Confusing isn't it?

  • ID CS6 questions - TOC

I had a word doc which I needed to convert to epub. I first went from word to Sigil and it looked pretty good as Sigil retained all the styles, then I went to validate  and I saw the TONS of errors. I had just finished a .id to .interactive .pdf and remembered I had the Kindle plug in for ID, so I selected ALL the text in the word doc ( I had converted it to html first) and started pasting the text on each page as I made 20 pages and command clicked to load the cursor. A bit of work but when it was done I added the cover and did a guided export. The first time I did I got a warning about the cover being too small. Once I corrected and exported again I never got any warning or confirmation message that the file was done. So I opened and checked in EPub Checker and I got no errors. Opened in Kindle Fire and it looks stunning! So before I start dancing around I need some info here first,
is it normal when exporting using the Kindle plug in if there are no errors that No warning comes up?
second, is there an easier way to select all the text from the word doc while using the loaded cursor and automatically copying the text into the linked text boxes?
    thx

There was an Adobe tech demo some time ago showing an export to HTML5 which dynamically retains liquid layout capabilities in the browser. The demo was pre-CS6, so I'm guessing they didn't get the feature ready in time for the initial release or even reserved it for a Creative Cloud update to ID CS6 on purpose.
Here is a video recording demonstrating liquid layout (which has since shipped) and then the HTML5 export:

  • Displaying the TOC of a RH6 project in RH8

As a companion question to my other recent post re RH6 to RH8 TOC, specifically:
If I have a RH6 project which I open in RH8, how do I display the TOC of the RH6 project without creating a brand new one so I can view and edit it?

Apologies if I have misunderstood your question but just try double clicking on the TOC file that has been updated from RH6 when you opened the project in RH8. You'll find it in the Project Set-up pod.

  • TOC in PDF does not include Link OBJR tags when exported from InDesign

I'm using InDesign CS6 to export a book file to a tagged PDF. When I run the accessibility checker in Acrobat 9, I get errors about items not being contained in the Structure tree. These missing items are links for the TOC and the Index page numbers. When I look at the tags, the Link OBJR tag is missing for these elements. I can't possibly manually add them all in. Other links e.g. cross-references, hyperlinks, automatically include these Link OBJR tags when exported. Why does the TOC and Index not do so?
I've asked this question in the InDesign Forum and no one seems to know. If I don't put these tags in, what does that mean for accessibility of the document?
    Thanks for your help

Glad you found something that worked.  For the future ... I found that if you create the PDF from BOOK and following these steps you can get the hyperlinks to automatically tag.  This will work if you are getting editable hyperlink boxes for the TOC -- I find that it is creating these (although I could swear it didn't earlier).  Anyway:
    1. Select all chapters in the book and create PDF with hyperlinks and bookmarks. Save as TEST.PDF
    2. Open the PDF and in the Pages Panel extract the page or pages containing the the TOC from the PDF.  Save this as TOCtest.pdf
    3. Delete the Tags from the TOCtest.pdf file --  in the Tags Panel, select the Root tag, right click and select delete
    4. Select Add Tags to Document to this same file.
    5. Examine the tags to see if all the OBJLINKs are tagged. Repeat steps 3 and 4 again (sometimes it doesn't autotag correctly the first time).  You may have to manually correct some of the structure -- headings and/or artifacts on these pages.
    6. Save again.
    7. Go back to the main document TEST.PDF -- delete the TOC page or pages from that document (assuming you didn't when you extracted.)
    8. On the pages panel, Insert from file and choose TOCtest.pdf -- insert before the first page.
    9. This will bring in the newly tagged TOC and it's tags HOWEVER the tags will be out of order in the tags panel. They will be at the bottom and you will need to find them and MOVE them where they should be.
Still more effort than you should have to but it worked for me.
Not sure how to record a bug with Adobe, but my testing in CS5 shows that this is NOT a new problem.  CS5.5 did the same thing for me.

  • Topics in TOC are not being published in Word output

    Windows 7
    RoboHelp 9.0.2.271
    Word 2010
I am having an on again/off again problem with RH not publishing all topics.
The topics are in the RH TOC and when I double-click them while in RH, they open for editing.
However, when I publish these same topics, they are not in the Word document--although they are in the web help.
Previous fixes include rebuilding the TOC (groan) or finding that rogue piece of code that causes topics not to print in Word or web help.
Question 1:  Does anyone know why this is happening?
Question 2:  Short of manually comparing RH TOCs against Word and web help (for 13 books), does anyone have any ideas on how to ensure all topics are included in the output?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Mary

There's a common misconception that what is in your TOC gets published.
The TOC is used the first time you generate a printed document. Thereafter, there is no update for good reason, you may want different topics. To update to what is in the TOC you need to click the Left arrow to clear everything from the right pane, then click the right arrow to put the new version of the TOC across to the right.
If you look at the current version of the TOC you will see some books on the left are not highlighted. That indicates there are topics in that book that are not on the right.
