TOC strangeness...

Wonder if anyone can suggest something...
Been working in a variety of Pages documents, using the TOC feature, which I love. All working great, but then suddenly (after I'd reduced the font size in one TOC style) the TOC stopped having the leading line from the Heading to the page number - although the tab stop is still there in the style (and this has happened on all TOC styles). Odder still, this effects other previously-created documents (where I haven't changed the TOC style) - and even if a document is opened in Pages on another Mac.
Any idea how this might have happened, and how I can get those nice leading lines to work again automatically?
Thanks in advance...

Hey -
Thank you very much for the reply... in the meantime I've sort of fixed it/worked out something... the page numbers stopped moving, and leading lines disappeared, because the tab stops were suddenly outside the right boundary of the pages. Moving them back within the width got everything back. Why this changed on all documents at once I have no idea, especially as I hadn't changed the default size or messed with the blank template while it happened (though I've been extensively customizing it since I started)... but either way it's helped me learn how that feature actually works, so I guess I'll put it down to fate... and thus deem it a feature

  • Strange ToC behaviour – linked to paragraph "start position"?

FM 9.0p250, unstructured, on XP; book contains cover.fm, ToC and body.fm
So: I take a large Word document provided by a colleague, add mml tagging, save as .txt and thus acquire a clean and workable FrameMaker file. In the first edit pass, I make sure that all the top-level headings use the same style, called :h1 in my docs since time began (or thereabouts). Everything behaves as expected, including the ToC that shows number and title followed by tab and page-number.
Time to fine-tune the layout, in this case by applying :h1_b to selected headings so they'll start at the top of a page. [not the moment to experiment with chains of keep-with-next]. The identical definitions for :h1TOC and :h1_bTOC are already in place on the ToC reference page in the generated table of contents and in the styles – so why does :h1_b not pick up the paragraph number or the tab? And come to that, how are ToC entries that only incude <$paratext> and <$pagenum> managing (in most cases) to include the <$paranum>? (separate issue)
I've managed to set things up to give me the required results, but only after considerable frustration; the .book seemed to remember the (faulty) ToC even when I'd deleted it and regenerated the book, but I fooled it by generating a ToC on the body file only. Which being so, it seems there must have been something, erm, quirky in body.fm? but if anyone can cast authoritative light on all this I'd be relieved to learn more!

  • TOC missing pages & strange order

I just noticed that when I let RoboHelp AutoCreate the TOC it is not including all the pages, I have noticed this in one particular folder:
    Project Manager
    HTML Files (Topics)
         Database
              Connection Issues
              Database BackupRestore
              Mirroring
In the TOC it only shows
    Database
         Database BackupRestore
I cannot see anythning different in how the pages are set up or in their properties and I havent found this issue happen in any of the other pages/folders.
One other issue is that the TOC isn't ordering alphabetically even though it is ordered alphabetically in the Project Manager. Is there a better way than manually ordering the pages/folders after you have autocreated the TOC?
    Thanks very much
    Tom

There appears to be a problem where some of the books are formatted in an older epub format that is not supported by the iBook reader. For non DRMed books you can pull the book into a tool for publishing to epub and republish the book which will fix the problem.
At this point it appears that Apple either needs to ask the publisher of the various books with this problem to reformat them for the newer epub standard or they need to adjust iBooks to handle the older format. I am no up to 5 books like this out of the ones I have bought. ::sigh::

  • Word TOC Links are shifting

This is a new one for me.  I am using Word 2003 and Acrobat 8.1.3.
I have a 500 page Word document that is a Master Document containing 13 subdocuments.  When I PDF it using PDFMaker, all of the TOC entries are hyperlinked, but this is where it gets strange.  Up until around page 113, the hyperlinks work perfectly.  After that, they start to shift so that when you click on an entry that should jump to the top of page 114, it jumps to the middle of page 115.  It continues to get worse from there, so by the end of the document, the link jumps to a point about 7 pages beyond the point it should.
If you use Ctrl + Click in Word, the entries are all fine, so it appears to be something that is happening during the conversion.
Has anyone seen anything like this before?
    Thanks.
    Rob

    Hello everyone,
I am facing the very same problem (Word TOC links are shifting in the PDF file, the longer the file, the greater the shift - first only by one page and then growing up to a shift of 4-5 pages with a 150p document). Xrefs and other links within the file are not affected, only the TOC.
I use Adobe Standard 8.1.6 (only updated from 8.1.1 yesterday, installing the updates chronologically). Word is 2003 with XP (SP3).
I have gone over the Acrobat settings a zillion times, everything is as it used to be about six months ago when PDFing was still working fine.
Also I followed all sorts of advice such as eliminating any Standard.dots on the machine but one, setting to the Adobe PDF printer before updating the TOC, tags are off, reflow is off, a.s.o.
Yesterday, a closer look at the TOC links using the Acrobat link tool revealed that the links on the page numbers work just fine, only the links on the paragraph titles and paragraph numbers are off target. Created in one and the same PDF and from one and the same Word file.
I cannot remember when the problem started because I mostly tested the links in the TOC from the page numbers and not from the titles... So I may have published many PDF files with this error. What I do remember is that a couple of months ago, when Acrobat converted its first Word file of the day, it started to convert and then broke off without displaying any message. Starting the conversion again produced the PDF file. This is the only change I ever noticed and it persists until today.
Funny thing is, I have another identical Acrobat installation on a different PC which was installed at the same time but is not used very much and is not connected to the network. It has not been updated from 8.1.1 and everything works fine on that machine. Acrobat (or Word?) do not "misbehave".
Anyway, so far I sat here for hours changing the incorrect links (the PC with the correct Acrobat outcome is not available to me all the time) using the link tool and today I found a solution which is considerably faster and less cumbersome: I simply delete all the links on the text and the paragraph numbers and then drag the left border of the page number link boxes all the way across the text and the paragraph numbers to the left. The TOC then has links that cover the entire line, saving the trouble of editing each one of them.
It's nothing but a workaround and does not solve the problem but I thought I'd share...

  • PDF output does not match Frame TOC

My Frame TOC is accurate, the tags are correct.  My PDF output has the correct Units in place.  However, in the PDF TOC on the left nav,  the Unit 5 Lessons appear in Unit 4, the Unit 6 Lessons appear in Unit 5, Unit 6 has no Lessons, Unit 7 is correct.  I have spent a full day troubleshooting this.  Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

Strange things can happen thanks to the PDF setup > Bookmarks tab, though I suspect you have already checked that. I've occasionally shot myself in the foot by using two styles for level 2, for example, and not noticing that one of them had decided to sidle into the .pdf navigation as level 3 …
Counsel of despair, if you have full Acrobat, would be to adjust the bookmarks manually so you can hand over the deliverable. Hope someone will come up with a more convincing answer, though!

  • Problem converting Word document with TOC table

    Hello,
I am using MsWord 2003 and Acrobat 9 in Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits.
I have created the manual using Word, I set Heading (s) with 3 levels deep and created TOC in Word.
It looks as designed. There are Titles, Subtitles and Subtiles (3rd level).
TOC in Word works fine. No problem.
In PDFMaker options under Bookmarks tab I set TOC 1 with 3 levels.
However, after converting the whole document into PDF, the Bookmarks look very strange.
They contain only Titles (no subtitles at all), each bookmark line ends with some number 3, 4 or 5 which I do not have idea what are they and those bollmarks point to the TOC page not to the page they should have.
What is wrong and how can I correct that?
    Thanks,
    jas
    Added:
I have read many of posts having similiar problems and tried all the suggestions posted.
    I tried:
    1.
Reinstalling Adobe (removing all the related files), although I did not have any previous versions (and installations) of Acrobat in this computer.
    2.
In Adobe PDFMaker  uncheck 'Enable Accessibility and...' option
    3.
    Setting printer to Adobe PDF
    4.
In Word > TOC settings I checked the 'Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers' option
Also I tried In Adobe PDFMaker not use TOC but to use 'Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks'
The result was horrible. Double bookmarks, reversed Level 1 with Level 2 positions and lots of empty bookmarks (I believe created by empty rows in pages tables).
Please note, that using the same Headings Word creates TOC without any problems!
The only plus side was that some of those bookmarks came with correct links.
Those bokkmarks were created using 'New Bookmarks from structure' option in Acrobat (after converting the document)
    /jas

    This is ridiculous!
I think it is time for Adobe to admit there is a problem creating bookmarks in Acrobat, regardless the used version.
Today I spent all day trying different combinations.
In addition to my post above I installed and tested the same document in Acrobat Prof ver.8 and Acrobat X.
The installation was virgin (no previous Adobe was installed).
Same for MS Office. Virgin installation of ver. 2003 and 2007
My document I copied and pasted in blank new Word document.
Also I tried under Windows XP
All that does not make any difference.
The final result was always the same, as shown graphically in above post.
    Any ideas?
What I do not understand, how such big corporation allows bugs like that.
Convertning TOC (nice working in Word) cannot be a rocket science!
If Word can create TOC from Headings flawlessly, why not Adobe?
That TOC is correctly converted as TOC page in pdf document.
Maybe Adobe should add the option to create bookmarks directly from it after the conversion?!
As I said, it is not a rocket science.
    Onus is on you, Adobe!

  • Issue with right aligning of Character Styles in my TOC

    Hello all!
I'm working on my very first book project and I have been reading soooo many threads on here for the past hour, but i either just don't get it, or i didn't find what i needed still, so i already apologize in case this very question has been answered before ...
ok, so ... i am building my TOC and have set up the corresponding TOC styles to the paragraph styles used throughout the book.
what i want is for the page number to appear before the entry. so for the page number i have set up it's own TOC page number character style.
    NOW
the page number appears left aligned. I have checked the character styles palette and there i can't set a tab for the page number to appear right aligned ...
how do i get this page number to be right aligned? and THEN, how do i specify the distance between the page number and the entry? there is "tab character"mentioned on the TOC dialogue box to specify the distance between page number and entry, but then do i have to go in manually every time something changes? that can't be it? i have seen in the paragraphy styles palette there is a tab section ... tried to input the tabs so the number would appear right aligned and the distance to the entry, but nothing happened, then the number is stuck right on the entry once the TOC is generated ...
    does this make any sense?
will attach a screenshot to try to clarify the issue ...
hope you can help me out.
    thanks a lot in advance!
    cheers

  • TOC Does Not Open in WebHelp Generated with RoboHelp 11

The TOC does not open in WebHelp Generated with RoboHelp 11. I tried other solutions posted on this forum but no success. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for responding! I uninstalled and reinstalled RoboHelp 11 and the WeHelp appears to display OK now. BUT, I have graphics in my project that are not displaying, only the empty placeholder for the graphics. This was displaying fine in WebHelp generated with RoboHelp 9 but not now. I see the graphics when I do “Preview Topic” but not in the generated WebHelp. Any clues what is causing this behavior? How can I correct it?
My tables appear very strange too. They are the default table in RoboHelp with the raised gray/silver border. However, in WebHelp, the tables appear as double solid black lines for the border. The tables appear fine in the topic but when viewed via “Preview Topic” and WebHelp output, they are double black likes. Help!
Another thing is that I also get an occasional message about a topic that says “The reference to the file  contains illegal characters and will not be shown in Project Manager. How can this be? My css is valid and I use it in numerous help projects.
Once again, thanks so much for your willingness to help. It is much appreciated.

  • How should a TOC look?

    Folks, a newbie question:
Ok, so, I’ve not had any training, and no books, just
the robohelp-html o/l help system. And I have some issues.
Problem: trying to load 300 pages of old documentation into
robohelp-html (webhelp format), to get it around, and get feedback
from folks on what/how to improve the documentation.
Media: the doc was done by various authors, at different
times, with different objectives. So, I have done the following:
    - created word styles for heading 1,2,3, for body text and
    for (un-numbered) lists
    - converted the doc to these styles
    - separated the doc into 12 chapters, each in it’s own
folder, extracting embedded pictures, and creating a toc for each
chapter (no page numbering, ‘classic’ style)
now, when I load a chapter just to test, I get a strange
result (or maybe, this is what it is supposed to look like?):
    - chapter x has a layout sort of like this:
    o H1
    § H2 with some text
    § H2
    · H3 with some text
    · H3 with some text
    § H2 with some text
    o H1
    § H2
    · H3 with some text
    · H3 with some text
    - when I bring it in to robohelp-html, using the word import
function (and I say create topic with H1), and running
    ‘generate primary layout’, I see:
o 2 ‘books’ in the toc, one book each for each of
    the H1
o when I expand the 2 books, I get under the first box (the
    first H1)
§ a ‘question mark’ box with the first H2
    title
§ a book for the next H2 with ‘question
mark’ boxes for each of the H3 titles
    o etc for the 2nd H1 book
    - IS THIS THE FORMATTING I’M SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING?
Seems kind of odd, yet it clearly has structure.
I’ve tried various combinations when I do the import
function, but they don’t seem to alter much. And I could be
at this combo testing for quite some time – so I thought
    I’d ask for some input.
    Thanks, Ron

Well, that is a serious, conservative layout, sure. I'm assuming the red text is instructions/suggestions from the teacher, and gets replaced by black text. Is that right?
Is the purpose of the business plan to attract investors or convince a bank or something? If it was, I'd probably change the typeface selection so that it wasn't all in Times. Nothing radical, but maybe a slightly more flavorful sans serif for headings, and a serif body typeface with a tiny bit more character. Could be for example Frutiger and Baskerville. Still pretty restrained, just not identical to most of the business plans they see.
But then again, I'm the guy who jailbroke his iPhone primarily to change the UI typeface, and asked the forum admins to change the default typeface here as well. So maybe I'm a little obsessive on this sort of thing.
    Cheers,

Oh yes indeed, it's for investors who go through hundreds of Times-based business plans every day. I really like the way you worded things there, "still restrained, just not identical to most of the business plans they see".
Frutiger and Baskerville is a great suggestion! I'm open to more before I go ahead and buy myself a new pair of fonts though.
    Much obliged!

  • TOC Style Confusion

Some inscrutible force is interfering with the formatting of entries in my table of contents. I have defined unique styles for both the entry and the page number. When I update the TOC, the entry assumes the style of the title of the TOC, rather than the defined entry style.
This is doubly strange, in that in my previous project, all aspects of the TOC behave quite normally.
Know this is difficult to diagnose at a far remove, but any ideas would be welcomed.

  • TOC not updating when creating PDF from Robo9

I have not really created PDFs from Robo before, so I might be missing something basic. I am trying to create Word and PDF documents from my Robo9 project. My problem is that some of my topics are not being generated, in either the Word output or the PDF output. The topics are indeed part of the TOC in the Robo project, but they are not part of the TOC in the Word and PDF output. The strange thing is, all of the TOC books make the conversion, but the one book I am having the issue with includes one topic, but all of the other topics in that book do not get converted. I tried recreating the TOC, and it still does the same thing. It's almost like the printed documentation generation is ignoring any new changes to the TOC, as it's the same every time no matter what I change. I tried making some changes to topics that are generated, and I can indeed see the changes in the printed output docs.
Anything glaring I am missing, or should try? Thanks.
    Mark

    Likely a common misunderstanding.
The first time you create printed documentation, the topics are based on the TOC. Thereafter there is no link.
When you add new topics to the project, they are not automatically in any of the TOCs. You have to add them to each TOC. It's the same with print, you have to add them in the print layout.
Easiest way is to simply use the double left chevrons to remove the topics in the print layout and then use the double right chevron to back in, the difference being it will add all the topics in the TOC and as you added the new topics there, they will be in the print layout.
There's more in Printed Documentation on my site.

  • TOC indenting a heading that shouldn't be indented

    Hi, Gang!
I've created a TOC for a book and the TOC entries for the two divider pages are indenting when they should not be. The TOC style for the divider page heading has no indentation and the entry on the TOC reference page looks correct. To make things stranger, the two entries are indenting by different amounts in the TOC.
Here's a screen capture that shows 1) the first TOC entry (indented a lot), 2) the second TOC entry (indented less, but still indented), and 3) the divider page style on the reference page.
    I'm stumped.
Does anyone have any ideas why this indentation would be happening?
    Many thanks!

    Rocky,
OR, control-click the text frame and UNCHECK allow for sideheads. For reasons unknow to me, sometimes Framemaker turns this on when you are creating a new TOC or Index.

  • Topics in multiple places in the TOC

    Hi all,
I was wondering if it is possible to insert a topic more than
once in the Table of Contents? This is probably a strange request,
but the problem has occurred because I have imported a manual
written in Word, but part of it contains information already in my
RoboHelp project. I was wondering if I could erase the duplicate
information in favour of linking to what was already there?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Cheers,
    darkagn

Peter's right: the TOC will get synchronized with the first
instance (top to bottom) that it encounters. However, you can use
redirect pages to get around this.
    1. Create a new topic (and name it
target_topic_name_redirect.htm as a visual cue for yourself). Make
the Title the same as the target topic's title (which is the name
that will appear in the TOC).
    2. Remove all text from the topic in WYSIWYG mode (leaving a
    blank page).
    3. In TrueCode, add this line to the other META tags (in any
    spot).
    <meta http-equiv=refresh
    content="0;URL=directory_path/target_topic_name.htm ">
    4. Drag and drop the redirect page to the desired TOC
    location.
Hint: The 0 (zero) is the duration time (none) that this
topic will display before redirecting to the target topic. If you
prefer to make this redirect available to the viewer, you can
increase it to, say, 8 or 10, and provide some text such as
"Retrieving this topic from the 'Configuration' section. Please
    wait a moment."
    Good luck,
    Leon

  • Strange display of a microsoft word document.

    Hi,
I try to add an editale word document in my webcenter project, but when I look at his display, strange symbols replace the letters. This is the picture of the problem:
    http://s19.postimage.org/qci9xjc5v/Sans_titre1.png
I also have a problem of permission for the file. It is in the UCM and I use a content presenter to display it. I'm developing with JDeveloper.
    Thanks for your help!

No need to excuse - at worst, you won't get your answer as people watching this forum might not know it.
This is a question related to Content Presenter, which is WebCenter Portal's feature. But I understand why you thought it belongs here. Anyway, if you want to use Content Presenter, you need to be aware of its behaviour. Particularly to your question, check this link: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/webcenter.1111/e10148/jpsdg_content_jsfpg.htm#CHDEGCFC and around.
Namely, it states: "Documents that can be rendered in a browser (HTML, flash, PDF and image)"
When WebCenter Suite (now, WebCenter Portal) PS3 came, one of my questions was why I can't use native documents and render them in WebCenter Spaces/Apps pages using Content Presenter. Since that time I have not seen that this behaviour would be changed, so I assume that this scenario is not yet supported.
What you can do, though, is to use SSXA - see here: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/doc.1111/e13650/toc.htm - within your WebCenter Portal application. All you need to do is to add Site Studio libraries to your project and follow the manual to create the cosmetics.
Another way could be using Dynamic Converter (URL calling the service converting the document to html) - if you don't want to edit your document on the page, that might be a bit simpler.
Both, SSXA and Dynamic Converter are UCM's features, so for them this forum would be the correct one.

  • Help creating browse sequences that work and deleting sync TOC

    Hi,
I'm using the latest version of the TCS with RH 9.0. I'm trying to create WebHelp Pro output
for a book produced originally in Framemaker. I've been following Rick's Skinny on skins
guide to tailor the look and feel, but am having real problems getting my browse sequence
to work. I've used Tools> Browse Sequence Editor and then Auto-create using Frame TOC,
selected the TOC from the drop-down list and chosen 4  as the depth that I want to browse.
The TOC that appears in Browse sequences  is strange and doesn't represent the Frame TOC that
appears in the html, I left this 'as is'. Once I've generated the ouput the sequence browsing works
for the equivalent of top-level heading only. What am I doing wrong and what should I
be editing to make this fully functional?
I would also like to delete the Sync TOC from the toolbar, and it seems to be possible to
delete the image but not the entire field. I know it can be done, because Peter Grainge's
RH site doesn't have it. Between Peter and Rick I will somehow achieve this website for
    my company...
Many thanks in advance for any ideas and help.
    Best wishes,
    Karen

    Hi all
@Jeff - In WebHelp output a Browse Sequence is presented using the arrows that sit in the Navigation Mini-Toolbar. I've documented some of it at the link below:
@Karen - Are you wanting one single sequence that works to allow the user to traverse the TOC from top to bottom or bottom to top? If so, the way you do this is by creating one very long sequence in the Browse Sequence Editor. You might begin by specifying 0 as the level to use when auto creating. Normally that will be sufficient. However, it depends on your TOC as to how well that may actually work.
    Cheers... Rick
