Toggle composite and grayscale mask in Quick Mask mode : Problem

Hello.
I have a problem with this command : "Toggle composite and grayscale mask in Quick Mask mode"
I know i have to press the tidle key " ~ " to activate it but i'm using an Azerty keyboard (belgium) and i have trouble with it.
The only way i can use the tidle key on my keyboard is to press "Option + n" keys.
So in Photoshop,  i load a channel  selection, turn into "quick mask mode" and then press "Option + n", but nothing happens.
If i try with "Command+Option+n", i open the window for a new document.
I have tried ALL combination of keys but nothing worked.
I have also tried to change the keyboard input to Britain, Usa, etc but it still doesn't work.
I'm using the english version of Photoshop CS6 (Subscription), and an Azerty Keyboard (Belgium) on a Mac Osx Snow leopard.
How can i solve this problem ?

Do you have an AltGr key on the right side of the keyboard?
Anyway on a windows system set to your language/keyboard layout i can hold down the AltGr key while pressing the tilde key (on the right side of the keyboard up and to the right of the AltGr key)
and that seems to work in photoshop in place of tilde key on an us english keyboard.
Not sure what the AltGr key would be on a mac system, maybe the option key on the right side of the keyboard?
Added:
I don't think it will work on an english version of cs6, you probably need a localized version of cs6.
If your on the subscrition plan you can change the language version of photoshop cs6.

  • Quick Mask Bug found (Mac OS 10.6.8)

    Hello there!
I found a bug using the quick mask while editing a layer mask.
    Example:
You have a document with a layer that has a pixel mask.
Then you alt-click the layer mask to display it in black and white, to be able to paint on it for example.
If you now make a selection, while you see the black and white layer mask (eg. rectangular marquee or whatever) and then enable the quick mask mode, to modify the selection (display it in ruby mode), the red (ruby) mode displays wrong.
It will not only mask everything red that is masked (or selected, depending on your preference), but also everything from the pixel mask that is black.
This is wrong and has been different in all versions before. It makes no sense to display the layer mask in quick mask mode while editing a selection.
Usually only the selection (or mask) should be displayed in the quick-mask-color (here: red) regardless of being in the pixel layer mask or not.
I can reproduce this error in a new file. I can post a video to illustrate it, if my english is not precise enough to describe the bug.
Could you please fix it soon? Thank you a lot!

    Hello,
no it does not change it. But I found out what causes that bug. It's not a displaying issue. Photoshop does something it did not do earlier, this is:
My quick mask color is the same as the layer mask color.
Photoshop displays the (colored) layer mask as well when switching to quick mask (selection) mode.
Using another color makes it easier to differenciate between the layer mask and the quick mask but here's the problem:
When pressing q (to switch to quick mask mode) photoshop will not only display the quick mask, but also the layer mask in their respective colors.
But displaying the layer mask in a color overlay while already being in the b+w layer editing mode makes no sense.
    Look here:
Now i set my layer mask color to magenta to make it distinguishable:
New file: Just a colored layer with a pixel mask (the center displays the transparency grid):
This is the layer mask in mask editing mode:
Now if i press Q, not even having made any selection or so, "quick mask" mode will also display the layer mask in its resp. color:
That makes no sense, because I am in layer mask editing mode and I can already see it in black and white.
Is it normal, that in quick mask mode the layer mask is displayed as a color overlay as well? I can't remember seeing this behavior earlier!
    Thank you!

  • Using the "quick mask" tool to change a color

    Good Day All
I am a wee bit confused. I wanted to show someone a way to change hair color in Photoshop CS5. Using the method I have used in CS4 I did the following.
In CS%, I clicked on the brush tool and then on the “quick mask” tool. Stared painting in the area I wanted to change. When I clicked to take off the quick mask tool, the paining I had done disappeared. That was it. In CS4 when I turned off the quick mask tool I would get an outline if the mask.
Is there a setting I am missing or has CS5 changed how this works?
    Thanks All

    Thank you Mylenium....
    Here is more information.....
These are the steps I do and the changes that take place
    1) Select the brush tool
    2) Select quick mask. When I do this, on the layers panel, the background layer is not highlighted
On the bottom left hand side the “set foreground & back ground color changes from (foreround) black to gray and the background color stays white
    3) Paint (it is red) the area I want to change and click on the quick mask.
The red where I painted disappears, and the outline is not showing. On the layers panel on the right hand side is now highlighted and on the bottom left hand side the set foreground color changes to black.
    4) If I click on the quick mask, the painted area comes back.
I located the “quick mask” under the tab channels. It is displayed as a separate channel. When I turn off the quick mask, the quick mask channel disappears. When I turn on the quick mask, the quick mask channel reappears….
Do I have something set wrong

  • My quick mask went grayscale...how to fix?

I don't think I did anything but now when I click to add a layer mask and then the gradient tool, the colors are no longer allowed.  Someone know how to fix this?

Will everything be reset?  Plugins and brushes and such?
Not everything will be changed thing that you added will still be on you system like brushes presets actions etc.  However thing settings will be reset to Photoshop defailts like action sets you have loaded will not be loaded.  You will need to load them again.  If you installed plugin into you own Plug-in folder structure and added that folder to Photoshop preferencess you will need to edit you reset preferences and make the changes you make changes to the defaullts like adding an additional plug-in path, open images in floating windows not tabs, Things like Screen DPI resolution increase number of history states etc.
Resetting Photoshop prefences often fixes Problems when Photosho's starts acting strang like tools not working like normally.
When you click Quick Mask Photoshop overlays the image with a color overlay mask the default color is red however this is changeable. Did you by chance douple click on the quick mask icon and change the option from red to gray sometime in the past?

  • Quick Mask selecting entire photo, not just the area I've painted - CS4

Out of the blue, my Quick Mask selecting has stopped working.  Normally I enter QM and paint the area I'm interested in with the brush tool.  The selected zone appears in red.  When I exit QM the red zone is replaced by a dotted line.  But now, when I exit QM the entire photo is selected, not just the areas I painted with the brush.  I must have hit the wrong button somehow, but I can't figure out which one it was, or how I can get back to normal. I've tried restarting Photoshop and also rebooting the computer, to no avail.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.  Your solution didn't solve the problem, but taught me something very useful about toggling between masking and inverting the mask.  But I did find the answer in the "More like this" column on the right.  I had to trash my preferences, which had apparently become corrupted.  Now everything's back to normal.

  • Quick mask mode problem in Photoshop CS6 64bit

Hi, I have recently installed Photoshop CS6 after previous happy experience with CS3.
The software appears to be seizing up when editing a selection in quick mask mode (image or layer mask) under the following conditions:
    - 64 bit mode
    - image > screen size, especially at 100% maginification
    - or image magnification adjusted whilst in quick mask
The red mask appears slowly and only where I move the mouse curser - but will not cover the entire masked area.
The software freezes, and I have to kill the process from the OS. Task manager shows its status as 'running' and memory / CPU do not appear to be maxed out.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • Quick mask problem in CS5

I am a newbie and I have come across a problem which I cannot seem to rectify, when trying to use the quick mask tool and select the paintbrush it does not work, i.e no mask is created, can anyone help

Adobe Acrobat doesn't have a  quick mask tool.

  • Quick mask mode no longer works for Photoshop CC

I have the latest version of Photoshop CC,  and  the  quick-mask-mode no longer functions as it should. When I try to modify an existing mask with the quick-mask-mode the highlighted read only appears on some of the photo being edited. In additions, those highlighted that do appear red only do so very slowly. This problem appeared after a recent update to Photoshop CC.
I have been using this quick-mask-mode for the last 10 years and have never seen this bug before.
I know how to check the options and my opacity is at 50%.
I use quick-mask-mode frequently and I need it to work.
Is there a setting I need to change?
It is hard to believe that I am the only one with this problem.

I'm having the same problem and I just downloaded the latest updates, which didn't seem to fix it. Here's a screen shot:
And the red just along his tricep I had to draw "blind" because it wouldn't populate the brush stroke to cover his arm until after I moved my mouse to the side of the screen. Any changes or movement on the screen is slower than molasses.

  • Hi All, ready for a quick mask question from a newbie ;-) ?

When I make a quick mask selection, it becomas "red-ish" as it suppose to. When I leave quick mask mode however, the painted area does not become a visible (yes I checked the correct option dialogue box, I guess, according to a friend) selected area though. But when I make any adjustment, eg color saturation, it only affects the area I selected in the quick mask mode, which I cannot see except for the adjustment. How on earth did I manage to make this happen. What have I done wrong or haven't done at all? You kind attention and quick reply is highly appreciated. Best /Stefan

Thanks a lot, Sir, much appreciated. Under View options one can selected "show selection outlines or boundaries", well not in swedish, it says something completely different, but just as you said, there it was!
    Again, thanks a lot!

  • No Quick Mask mode in Photoshop CC Win

My Photopshop CC for windows does not open quick mask mode when I try any of these three (Select / edit in quick mask, or hitting Q on the keyboard, or clicking the washing machine Icon) Instead it goes into and Alpha/8 or 16 mode. And I am not able to paint any masks? What an I missing? I have the latest software (last week) and use the windows version.

Usually when Quick Mask is set up properly, the selected (painted) areas are shown as 50% red. For example when you use a brush to paint your selected areas.  By the way using ordinary selection tools while in Quick Mask mode will not show the red area, you must use the selection tools then go into Quick mask mode to see the red area.
To see what your Quick Mask settings are like, double-click the Quick Mask icon, and the options should look like this:
The 50% red comes from olden days when graphic designers would apply a red film called "Rubylith" to mask off areas in artwork and tailor it with an exacto knife.

  • Quick masks in Lightroom

This is probably more of a suggestion about the adjustment brush/quick masks. It would be nice to be able to selectively add your to your adjustment while viewing the quick mask. We can do this in Photoshop and it works wonders in narrowing down your area of selection/adjustments. I find myself not using the adjustment brush as much as I could because it’s rather cumbersome, I end up missing lots of spots within my area, you basically have to "remember" where your gaps in your adjustment are. Just food for thought for future updates of Lightroom.
Currently running Lightroom 2.4 on PC and Mac

It would be nice to be able to selectively add your to your adjustment while viewing the quick mask.
You can paint, while viewing the overlay (quick mask, as you call it).

  • CS3: Quick Mask trouble

Quick mask is a fantastic tool but I'm having trouble with it. I used the quick mask to select the area I wanted and hit "q" again to give me a selection, then used invert selection to swap from having everything BUT that area, to ONLY that area. I created a new layer and overlayed the color layer I wanted and changed the blending options for the layer to "Soft Light". I then used Ctrl+D to deselect.
The color overlay I wanted to use is fine, but I have a thin grey line (1-2 pixels wide) running around the entire perimeter of where my selection was. It is part of the base layer, not the overlay layer but I can't for the life of me work out where it came from. I checked whether it was only part of the PSD file but upon saving as a JPG the line is still very much present.
Has anyone else experienced this and or/know of a way to fix it?

Soft for the greater part of the work. However I did no work on the background layer where this line has appeared, only on the other.

  • Doubt on quick mask mode?

Hi i have 3 layers in photoshop.
    Background
    layer1
    layer2
Now on layer 2 i did a selection and entered into quick mask mode and then applied gussian blur. When this is done does the selection borders try to blend with the back ground or will they try to blend with the layer 1 as it is the layer just behind the layer 2. In case if there is no background, I mean if all three are layers then what happens?

Just got more confused. I do understand what do u mean by glass plates. i am not changing the order of the layers. My question is specific. The selection on the layer 2 normally will have hard edges. I want to smoothen them. So i have applied quick mask and after that i have applied blur to the selection edges. So now the edges have to blend into the background. So when i apply blur to edges of the selection on layer 2 which is above layer 1 do the edges try to blend directly with the back ground or will they try to blend with the image on layer 1 which one will it consider for blending the edges?
I have an image in the background and another image in layer 1. when i apply blur for edges on layer 2 and after that i did inverse selection and removed the selected part of the image on layer 2. So at that time we can see the smooth edges.
The following is the tutorial that led me to this confusion

  • CS 4 Quick mask problem

    Hi
    My first posting here
Cant figure out whats wrong. Maybe somebody here can guide me to a solution.
    When selected quick mask.
Masking out an area and using brush to select area.
When exiting the mask i dont get the marked area visible by the "walking ants" showing my what area i masked.
    Regardless of brush diameter.
Before i had the same problem when opacity was set lower than for example 50. Setting the value higher solved the problem.
Now opacity is 100 but i can see through the marked out area
I have choosen red as color for masking area.
Also the brush is "cut" in half when exceeding ca 300 in brush diameter.
    Any tips?
    AVFR

    Thanks for quick replies.
Photoshop is updatet to latest version,
Drivers are not possible to update yet. No newer that the one i am using.
There exist one that nvidia says will fit to my laptop but get a fault message when installing.
    Will examine this further,
    Regarding if color i 100 % black.
    Where can i check this?
When using cs 3 i couldnt see through the quick mask when opacity was 100.
Now it seems like 50 %
Regardless of which color i choose to use when brushing the areas i want selected
Is there another menu option where i can check enter opacity?
