Tons of memory but applications keep needing to be "paused" or shut down because of memory problems?

About 6 months ago I upgraded to 16GB RAM and have had no problems.  Have checked the system report for my memory and it says both of them are OK.
Within the past 2 or 3 weeks I've been seeing crazy lagging at odd intervals with a message coming up that because of memory overload (next time the message comes up I will try to screenshot or at least remember the exact verbiage), some applications have automatically paused and basically recommending I force quit.  This happened even today after my computer had been completely turned off all night and I only opened up my mail client, Skype and Firefox after turning the computer on.
I just installed MemoryKeeper and can see I'm usually sitting at about 10GB up there, but every now and then (at completely arbitrary points - not even when I'm using memory-intensive processes necessarily, but maybe just writing an email), it'll jump up to 20GB and even something outrageous like 300GB for a second (?!????!?) and then the screen will come up saying that some applications have been paused out of necessity.
I'm assuming something is corrupted somewhere but between all the constant updates programs are having me do (running Firefox 28 in case anyone's aware of a problem with that), it's hard to pinpoint exactly where the issue lies.  I really don't have too many applications: on a given day, I am using Firefox, Safari, my mail client, iPhoto, iTunes, and maybe something like Lightroom or Premiere (but hey, I got this MBP with the specs I got so I could do some editing, and have done it without issue in the past so I doubt it's my system specs).  I am pretty good about not really loading a bunch of apps on my computer and periodically cleaning out things I haven't used in a while, and my hard drive is new-ish as well at 1TB with about 500GB remaining available.
Any ideas what may potentially be causing this issue or what I can do to resolve it without taking it in and having the store charge me a million bucks to tell me to buy a new computer?

I'm really sorry, I have no idea where I got 10.6.7 from (I think I was going off my old system information from the last time I used this forum).  I'm using 10.9.2.
So the issue seems to have started around the time I installed Maverick (although not 100% sure on the timeline, but that's what I believe to be the case).
Additionally, I just figured out that the problem consistently starts when I use Spotlight, whether to search for items or to do calculations.  If I clear the fields fast enough I don't have any problems but if I leave anything in the Spotlight field and resume using other applications, my memory jumps up and I quickly reach a point where I have to restart my computer (it would be too late to simply clear the field).
I don't know if indexing is the problem since after doing a massive indexing when I installed the OS, I don't notice that it is doing it anymore.  The problem seems to be caused only by having characters left in the Spotlight field.

I think as drive capacities increase, the old 10-15% becomes less accurate.  The amount of free space you need doesn't really have anything to do with the drive size.  So, increasing your drive size shouldn't mean that you need to have more free GB (which using a % of drive space would mean).  You need free space to accommodate page outs (the amount of which would depend on how much RAM you have installed and how memory intensive the applications are), sleep images (again, this would max out at your total amount of RAM), and a bit to minimize fragmentation.
With desktop drives commonly in the 2TB range today, it is certainly not necessary to have 200GB+ free in order to maintain proper operation.  I generally find about 30GB to be the minimum I'm comfortable with.  Mind you, I pretty much always have way more than that available.  But, if I'm working on a system and the amount of free space is at least 30GB, I would generally not site drive space as the cause of any performance issues.  I'd say that 30GB is a minimum for a stable system (with 8GB or RAM installed).  Of course at that amount, you would still need to free up space if you were to want to install or download any significant amount of data.
With servers being more likely to run into the 16GB of RAM range, more storage would be necessary.  Most servers should be well stocked with storage, but the actual needs would vary greatly depending on what's being "served".
The 10-15% thing came about when we used to talk about drive capacities in hundreds of MBs and RAM in terms of KB (not MB and certainly not GB).  More drive space is always a good thing, but as drive capacities continue to sky rocket, we don't need to dedicate larger amounts of storage on systems with the same specifications.  A set amount of space is required for proper operation regardless of the capacity of the drive installed.

  • Today I tried to shutdown my computer and a window popped up saying that my computer could not shut down because the mail application was open, it wouldn't close, so I used a key combination to force mail to quit and now I can't log in. Help?

Okay, so I have been having trouble with my mail application all week. The window refused to open and would not quit. Today, I tried to shut down my mac and a pop up window told me that I was unable to shutdown because mail was open. After using a key combination, I successfully was able to quit mail with force quit. Then I was able to shut down with out a problem. However, upon rebooting, my computer refused to let me loggin. I put in my password correctly but then the rainbow pinwheel showed up and stalled for a minute and then my screen flashed and the gray screen reappeared, expecting a password. I tried turning it off and back on again with no luck. I also reset my password after reading a similar discussion, but I still can't log in. How can I fix this?

  • My 5th ten iPod is basically doing nothing but trying over and over again to start up. I've tried to restore it, but when the logo apple appears, it simply shut down.

my 5th ten iPod is basically doing nothing but trying over and over again to start up. I've tried to restore it, but when the logo apple appears, it simply shut down. Then I've connected it to my macbook pro, and I've seen the script "Please Wait - Very Low Battery", but, after some time, the iPod tries to start up again, and nothing happens. It's a kind of noise, I'm thinking about the hard disk, (it's a 80Gb version), and I'm listening to it; every 30 seconds seems to try to open and then shut down again. I can't see the iPod in iTunes too. Don't know what to do. Can someone help me? Thanks a lot, it's my first forum

It sounds like the battery could be going bad as well as the iPod's Hard drive.  You'll want to have the iPod serviced either by Apple or a third party repair company. Here is Apple's pricing:

Google for "iPod repair" and you should get a ton of results to work with.

  • My macbook keeps asking if I want to shut down, restart, etc...

It just started, but my macbook keeps asking if I want to shut down, restart, etc...
I've tried all the resetting advice I see online but nothing works...
    I have a macbook 2.1/Intel Core Duo - 4GB - 10.6.8

My MacBook just recently today starts to ask me to shutdown/sleep/restart etc after 1 minute of idling. I've reset the SMC twice to no avail. I checked my power settings and everything else and nothing is out of the ordinary. I've looked online and other people have experienced similar problems. Just wondering if anyone have found a solution to this?

    Hello vina8sy,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone will turn off after a sync but the iPad will not. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • DAC Service shuts down with Java Memory when regenerating indexes.

We have set up to run the DAC as a windows service. We have just set up a new execution plan comprising subject areas from Financials and Inventory. When we run the first full load, the execution plan executes all steps, but when it starts to run the last task: QUERY_INDEX_CREATION, the DAC service shuts down subsequently failing the execution plan. In the stderr.log we see the following:

This is repeated many times in the log. It manages to create some indexes, but eventually it shuts down the DAC windows service
In the windows event viewer we then see this at 11-11-2008 16:
"The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of 10, the service is being stopped."
My guess is that we need to allocate more memory to the DAC Java VM, but how/where?
    Any ideas?

We have managed to work around the problem, by changing the DAC Sytem Property (under Setup): CreateQueryIndexesAtTheEnd from true to false. This way, indexes are being rebuilt during the load - not at the end. This has helped in getting the execution pla to finisf succesfully. We are now working on how to increase Java heap memory of the DAC Server, when started as a windows service. We have installed a windows service to stop and start the DAC serve,r using a document by Olivier Lemaire from Oracle.
Does anyone have experiences on this?

java Heap memory in DAC can be increased from the Client Side .
    Open the file for editing----startclient
    echo off
    title Siebel DAC Client
    call config.bat
Rem Uncomment the below if you want to see a DOS window with messages.
Rem and comment out the JAVAW line.
    Rem
    Rem %JAVA% -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -cp %DACCLASSPATH% com.siebel.analytics.etl.client.view.EtlViewsInitializer
    Rem
    start %JAVAW% -Xms256m -Xmx1024m -cp %DACCLASSPATH% com.siebel.analytics.etl.client.view.EtlViewsInitializer
edit 1024 and increase the heap memory sizee, this should work.We faced a similar issue and increasing the size of the java memory solved the issue.

  • First generation iPad keeps shutting down safari and other problems.

I have a first generation iPad.  It is currently running on iOS 5.1.1.   Now I just updated the software on my iPhone to is 6.1.2.  Does the iPad not follow the same update schedule?  It doesn't say it needs to be updated.
Anyway, on to my original problem.   My safari will randomly close down.   I'm not sure if it's considered crashing because no dialog box appears.  It usually happens on particular sites like Facebook or news sites.  If I go back it happens again. But I can go to a different site and it will work without closing down.  I am also having trouble typing emails or message board responses.  I will be in the middle of typing and it will stop responding.  I have to close the keypad and then fetal the screen so I can resume typing.  This can happen several times.  I'm not sure what the problem is.  I went through and cleared out a bunch of old apps hiking maybe my memory was getting to full.  That didn't help.  I reset my iPad and used my back p to get my apps back.  Didn't help.  Finally I reset my iPad to factory settings.  I didn't even restore my backup.   It's still happening.
    Any ideas?

You should try restoring the iOS software now if resetting the iPad did not help. This explains how to do it. I hope that you have a backup, because restoring the software erases the device, but you have the opportunity to restore from the back after the software is installed again.

  • Firefox is using large amounts of CPU time and disk access, and I need to know how to shut down most of this so I can actually use the browser.

Firefox is a very busy piece of software. It's using large amounts of CPU time and disk access. It puts my usage at low priority, so I have to wait for some time to be able to use my pointer or keyboard. I don't know what it uses all that CPU and disk access time for, but it's of no use to me. It often takes off with massive use of resources when I'm not doing anything, and I may not have use of my pointer for several minutes. How can I shut down most of this so I can use the browser to get my work done. I just want to use the web site access part of the software, and drop all the extra. I don't want Firefox to be able to recover after a crash. I just want to browse with a minimum of interference from Firefox. I would think that this is the most commonly asked question.
