Too Many Authentication Required Dialogs

Hi,
I'm using Java 1.6.0_u10, at a client site, behind a Microsoft Proxy (Poxy?) Firewall.
when I try any Applets, or Java Web Start Apps, I get way too many "Authentication Required" Dialogs.
How many is too many? well for me 1, really, but I'm giving up after typing my username/password
- and clicking the "save this password in your password list" - (not sure what that's supposed to do,
if not save me from these dialogs) - for the *+6th+ time*. It seems to be once for every resource accessed, even though
they all come from the same domain - or they should.
In the Java Control Panel, I have tried Manual Proxy Settings, with the same settings from Firefox, System settings and Browser settings.
I'm getting a bit fed up.
Question: Does anyone have trouble free experience of Java Web Start (and plug-in) apps/applets behind an authenticating proxy Firewall?
If so, what's your secret?
After 12 years of Java development, I'm not exactly a newbie. I haven't noticed any of this stuff happening with Flash..and Firefox seems to cope. (although Acrobat reader doesn't manage to update itself, and Netbeans 6.5 is repeated getting me locked out of Windows, but that's another story)
I know the firewall is a nuisance, but if Sun really wants to catch up in the RIA market, it just has to... just work.
Rgds, and thanks for reading, rant over,
Matthew.

That's really odd.
I'm behind a NTLM authenticating MS Proxy server at work and I don't have an issue with Applets or JNLP.
I'm on Java 1.6.11
There a definitely issues with other software, for instance neither Apple's Safari or Google Chrome (both webkit) will work through the proxy server.
But Java does.

  • Too many authenticated connections

I've got a customer with a BT line, sending via mail.btinternet.com.  For the last month or two they've complained that they keep getting asked for their password.
I've checked out the customer's system and I can see that it's not a password problem, but the SMTP server is instead coming back with "too many authenticated connections".
I can see that a host of BT customers on here are reporting password problems, I would guess that they are experiencing the same issue, that these are not password problems, but SMTP server issues on BT's new mail systems.  The message would suggest that the server is unable to take any more connections so some sort of resource issue at their end.
Of-course unless you're looking under the bonnet of the SMTP connection, you won't be seeing this message, just the popup asking for your password again. It's not a password issue. If you try the connection multiple times, it will go in the end (when you get a connection that is willing to be accepted by the SMTP server.
I've configured the mail client to the letter, as per BT's stated configuration, and like I say, it will work on a percentage of connections. On a good run, you might get 10 out of 10 successes, other times 1 in 3.
Please let me know if anyone is experiencing the same message.  The message could perhaps be a red-herring of some kind, perhaps not able to successfully negotiate the authentication / encryption using this particular mail client.  The customer is using Mac Mail and there do appear to be quite a few customers referencing Mac's / IOS on this forum, not many Outlook customers complaining.

    Hi Bookanengineer,
Many thanks for your post, we have been away and asked some questions around this and the view is that this is unlikely to be an SMTP load issue. There is a limit to the number of authenticated connections we allow per user and the password pop ups being seen are more likely to be due to the customer having too many authenticated connections which could also be due to sessions not being closed correctly
We believe that this is more likely to happen to client users as each time your client connects it opens an authenticated session. If, when you disconnect, the session does not close for whatever reason, the mail server still shows you with a session open. If that happens often you will quickly hit the limit for the number of sessions allowed per customer
We do however need to eliminate other issues so need examples to further investigate, I appreciate that you are speaking on behalf of one of your customers, but  if you are able to send in any details to us so we can take a look that would be great. You can send in the details using the "Contact The Mods" link found in my profile.

  • SMTP Send Mail - too many authenticated connection...

Using Outlook on a MAC, and within this last week I have started to get this error when sending mail. I have read all the forum posts and help documents on this issue and ensured that my settings are as described and yet I am still having this problem.
Should I be switching to IMAP to avoid this problem, and if so how do I do that without losing all my SMTP downloaded email?
Thanks for any insight - it is causing me real issues now as I'm job hunting and can't reply to job emails!!!!

Yes same problem for me. In the last three days, or so, I will get the random "too many authenticated connections" message. I have just phoned BT twice this afternoon and had great trouble understanding both Indian guys. One suggested he's fixed it by adjusting things at BT to accept "S Client Mail", whatever that means! That however didn't fix it. The second suggested I needed to reset password (easy option that one), until I pointed out that I am having no trouble with password use on the BT webmail page or through my phone. He then said I'd have to reload Outlook to solve the problem. Yeah right, like I'm gonna loose all my emails, settings and calendar to satisfy his theory of "if it doesn't work then reload it". There is clearly a server problem somewhere and OH, how I would love to speak to someone, (anyone), at BT who actually knows what they are talking about from a network/server angle. Anyone worth their salary in networks could trace my activity online and find out what was going on and why it was failing.
Setting POP3 and all others checked by BT as being correct.

  • Too many symbols require `small' PIC references

    Error Message:
ld: fatal: too many symbols require `small' PIC references:
have 6655, maximum 2048 -- recompile some modules -K PIC.
    *** Error code 1
I am linking perhaps 100 object files to create a shared object. All objects are compiled in
    the following manor:
    /apps/SUNWspro/bin/CC -KPIC -z text -library=iostream -G -g -O
    -DRW_MULTI_THREAD -D_REENTRANT -mt -D_RWBUILDSHARED -DPS_MT
    -I/apps/persistence_3.55/include -I/apps/persistence_3.55/include/sys
    -I/apps/rogue_wave/include -c DBPS_mycode.cc
Oh yeah, I am trying to migrate my code to Solaris 7 from 2.5.1 and the code is dependent on this version of persistence (3.5.5). I don't get the error when linking fewer objects together. Creating several small shared objects in place of the one won't help either because I'll still need all the shared objects to execute my application.
Are there any compile options to increase the size that this error message is eluding to? Do I need a patch to fix this problem?

The problem was fixed when I removed the optimization option -O.

  • Too many clicks required to close a window

When I click to close a window, too often a menu pops up instead. What am I doing wrong?

The buttons that were giving me a problem were close X; hide X. It didn't seem to matter whether I clicked on the close, hide or X a menu would pop up with a list of items: Open link in New Window, etc down to Copy Image.
Now it seems to be working, or my fingers are working! Thanks for the great tip though in terms of closing the main windows and applications!

  • Too Many Pop-up Dialogs

Several agents such as the calendar agent and Address Book Sync pop up requests for authorization every few minutes, whether or not the computer is in active use. It's annoying, and although it can be suppressed using Do Not DIsturb, I'd like to be able to make the authorizations less frequent.
Using the Edit menu in Keychain Access I was able to select Change Settings to change the timeout for the Login keychain, but the similar settings for other keychains such as Local Items and System (which some of these agents want to access) are greyed out, even after I unlock those keychains. Is there a way to either change their settings, or link them to the Login keychain so that I don't have to enter my password multiple times whenever the computer sleeps? Or some other way to achieve the same effect?

hello bruce, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by malware on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • Java webstart - authentication required

Hello and thank you for reading my post,
I need to get the username written in the "Authentication required" dialog. System.getenv("User.name") gets the username used to login to OS.
Would be grateful for any help.
    Best regards,
    S.Renani

    Followup:
Alternatively, is there a way to turn off the authenticator? (Not an optimum solution but in some cases necessarily)
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html describes depolyment.config and how one can turn it off from there but it seems that it can only be turned off at client side. I need to do that at server side.

  • Too many symbols...

I am using Workshop C++ V5.0 to compile a shared object consisting of a number of object files, all of them compiled with -KPIC in the following manner:
    CC -o foo.o -c -G -O -instance=global -KPIC -I/whatever foo.cpp
When I try to link these, I get the following error Message:
ld: fatal: too many symbols require 'small' PIC references:
have 3155, maximum 2048 -- recompile some modules -K PIC.
I found some messages regarding this problem in this forum, and in fact it does link without any problem when I drop that -O parameter. But I think this is not acceptable. There has to be another solution. Any ideas?
PS: I applied a number of patches, but maybe I have overlooked one?!?

The problem was fixed when I removed the optimization option -O.

  • Authenticator Problem: ProtocolException: Server redirected too many times

My program needs to login to a certain website, and I'm using Authenticator to do this. If I supply valid credentials this works fine. However, my program needs to handle the case of the user entering invalid credentials. The site responds to invalid logins by redirecting to itself. If I type the URL into a browser, I get a login prompt, and if I enter an invalid login, it just reloads the page and gives me a new login prompt.
Since java automatically tries to login to every page with the given authenticator, it gets stuck in a loop. Login, redirected to same site, login again, etc. until this exception is thrown:
java.net.ProtocolException: Server redirected too many times (20)
What's the best way to handle this? I've tried adding HttpURLConnection.setFollowRedirects(false); but it doesn't seem to work (it still redirects).

The URL I'm connecting to is http://webservices.schedulesdirect.tmsdatadirect.com/schedulesdirect/tvlistings/xtvdService
Here is my code. Right now it's set to assume an incorrect login if there was a redirect. It works, but it's not ideal imo.

  • "Bad Data, too many results for shortname"

Every 10 minutes since October 13 the wikid error log has recorded the following error message:
*"Bad Data, too many results for shortname: username"*, always naming the same user, who is not actually doing anything.
Coinciding with that message at the same time every 10 minutes, the system log records 13 or 14 of the following:
*"Python\[15645\]: ••• -\[NSAutoreleasePool release]: This pool has already been released, do not drain it (double release)."*
15645 is a process owned by _teamserver, which would appear to confirm the connection between the python and wikid error messages.
Last clue: The messages (I have determined in hindsight) started while I was setting up the server to do vacation messages. The user named in the "Bad data" messages was the user who wanted to (and did) set up a vacation message at that time. They worked, too.
Anyone have any ideas about what is going on and how to fix it? BTW, google does not find even one page where this "Bad data" error message is mentioned.

Thanks for your response. To answer your questions:
+Are you using AD for your directory?+ No. OD master only.
+Are there users with duplicate shortnames in your directory system?+ No, and to double check, I searched with WGM and only the one came up.
+As a bit of background, the wiki server keeps an private index of user and group information so we can track user preferences, and the "Bad Data, too many results for shortname: username" error is triggered when we do a lookup in that index for a particular user and we (unexpectedly) hit duplicate entries. Are you seeing an issue with using the software, or just an annoying log message?+ It's hard to say (for me) what might be related. The directory or wiki related issues with the server include:
    • A memory issue with slapd that eventually causes it to crash. (preceded by lots of "bdbdbcache: db_open(+various: sn, displayname, givenname, mail, maybe others+) failed: Cannot allocate memory (12)" and "logging region out of memory" and "index_param failed" errors.
    • The wiki is slow, despite very light use.
    • Wake from sleep (network clients with authentication required) can be very slow. Several minutes even.
Any suggestions you may have would be appreciated.

  • My ipod 5th gen has too many GB on the other, and now the rest of my apps and music won't download. What do I do?

so I went to sync my ipod, and the computer says i have too many GB of space being used on my ipod for "other". I checked yesterday and there wasn't nearly that much space being used. What happened, and can i fix it? Thanks!

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:
How do I get rid of "other" storage: Apple Support Communities
Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • Anyone know how to remove a pesky "Authentication Required" box?

I visited (shame on me!!) a tasteful but adult-oriented art photo site and by mistake clicked on a content link which required a "member subscription" to view. My system attempted to use iTunes to open the file, and it threw an "Authentication Required" nag box on the screen. The box continues, "To access this site, you need to log in to area 'Members_Only' on _____________.com. Your password will be sent in the clear.", followed by fill-in boxes for the Name and Password.
Now, I have never gone back to that site, yet almost each time I launch iTunes, I get this box, and I actually have to cancel out of it about 15 times in rapid succession before it will disappear from the screen and let the iTunes application display my music browser. Is there a preference cache file that I can trash to get rid of this, without losing any other valuable settings, like my iTunes online store registration info?

It sounds like iTunes is still trying to access or download something form that site. Let iTunes finish opening. click cancel on the dialog and check the iTunes library, podcasts and other folders.playlists for the unwanted content. Delete it when you find it.

  • How do I get rid of "Authentication Required" all the time?

In Firefox ONLY at certain sites (perhaps Google sites) a dialog box pops up and at the top it says, "Authentication Required" and I can type in any of my Google log-ins and click OK and it goes away FOR A TIME. It keeps popping up as I am browsing. There is usually a line pertaining to mail delivery. I can't seem to capture the dialog box in order to send it to you. Now that I would like to show you what it says I can't make it appear.

There is no "switch" to turn off Private Browsing. A "hack" was posted in this forum for Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 versions a number of times, but Firefox 4.0 has that file that needs to be hacked is inside the omni.jar file which makes accessing the file that controls PB a lot more difficult. Plus, the hack will probably be gone the next time Firefox is updated with a new omni.jar file.

  • Too many partitions in my W530?

This may look like a silly question and I fully admit that it might be it... But I have been unable to find a way to get rid of some apparently unuseful partitions in my SSD. I am attaching two images (see below) for clarity.
In image 1, I can see only two partitions, C: and Q: and there are also listed three other "Devices with Removable Storage": the DVD RW drive (D: ), the Removable Disk (F: ) and the Removable Disk (G: ). I tried to get rid of these last two (F: and G: ) but could not figure out how to achieve it. Not that their presence is a problem, just for cleaning purposes, as I do not see any need for them to be listed there. I don't even fathom what they may actually represent.
In image 2, taken from the Acronis True Image backup app, besides the same C: and Q: partitions, I also see a System_drv and an unamed partition that are not listed in the Windows-7 figure. The Unamed Partition, by the way, is always empty but I was discouraged in the past to just get rid of it. I wonder if I should, having received conflicting advice on whether or not to do it.
My question is: How can I eliminate the Removable Disks F: and G: as shown in the Windows figure and would it be a good idea to get rid of the Unamed partition as shown in the Acronis figure.
All help will be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Moderator note: images totalling more than 50k converted to links per forum rules:  Lenovo Community Participation Rules

If you were to install Win7 from scratch on a brand new empty drive (spinner or SSD, doesn't matter) and not change anything from the standard default installation options, you'd get TWO partitions:
    (1) un-lettered "system reserved" 100MB, where Boot Manager (and boot menu, presented if you were to install a second or subsequent bootable OS after installing Win7 as the first bootable OS) is placed.  This is also marked as the ACTIVE partition, so that the BIOS goes here to start the actual boot process.
    (2) C-partition for the rest of the drive.  This is where Windows itself gets installed, as a "system" drive.
In the case of Lenovo-provided machines, they have installed additional recovery tools, which are placed into that small un-lettered partition normally referred to as "system reserved" and only 100MB.  Lenovo has enlarged the partition from the standard 100MB to about 1.5GB, but it's functionally identical in purpose.  Also, it's been labeled "SYSTEM_DRV", rather than "System Reserved", but this is of no relevance.
And Lenovo's also added that additional Q-partition, which is where the "data" for system recovery is placed, in the event you needed to or wanted to restore your machine to initial factory state, exactly as it looked when it first came out of the box.
So... what's critical here is that standard Windows7 requires the TWO partitions: (1) ACTIVE partition, where Boot Manager and boot menu lives and where the BIOS goes to start the boot process on what is configured as the first hard drive in the boot sequence, and (2) C-partition because that is specified as the one-and-only bootable OS partition according to the default one-OS boot menu built by the Win7 installer and subsequently examined by Boot Manager at boot time.  Since by default there is only one bootable OS you will not be presented with the boot menu, but instead Boot Manager will simply use that one-and-only OS and start it.  If you had two or more bootable OS's, you'd get a boot list presented onscreen by Boot Manager, and you'd need to select which one to boot from within say 10 seconds else the default OS would automatically be booted.
Any "system image" backup requires BOTH of the above partitions to be checked, since [at least theoretically] BOTH of them need to be backed up and/or restored in tandem should you need to recover from a disaster.  By backing and restoring BOTH, you guarantee a 100% working operating environment should you need to recover from a disaster.
Now the Q partition can be deleted (and its space re-allocated to either expand C, or perhaps in conjunction with shrinking the generally much too large C can be used to allocate one or more additional "data" partitions D, E, etc.) if you will NEVER need to or want to recover back to Lenovo's "factory-provided" out-of-the-box system setup.  This could be the case if you use an alternative method for disaster recovery, such as using Macrium Reflect to take regular periodic (say once a week) "system image" backups, say to an external USB 3.0 drive.
So you could use Macrium Reflect to take an initial "system image" backup, which would effectively be your equivalent of the Lenovo-provided Q partition content, although you wouldn't need Q if you had to restore the Macrium "system image" backup.  And then you'd just establish a weekly regime of further "system image" backups using Macrium, as your ongoing regular protection from a loss of Windows integrity which required some kind of restore to a prior working system.  In this case it would be no older than last week's backup.
If you needed more current protection, just take more frequent "system image" backups (if you only have a C partition), or add a second backup tool like NovaBACKUP to take monthly/daily "data" backups (also to the external USB 3.0 drive).
==> You don't have "too many partitions".  But the above description explains why you have what you have, and confirms that you can blow away Q if you have an alternative and superior backup/recovery method (such as Macrium Reflect) in case of a disaster.
