Top Causing Terminal Gridlock
1. When 'top' is run in Terminal I get a long display of all the processes, plus the summation outline at the top of that. However, the window always keeps the summary in view on the top, and displays as many of the processes as will fit on the window as you expand it vertically.
2. What that has meant every time I've tried is that I can't get all of the processes displayed; it's as though 'top' is being held as incomplete. The scroll bar does not work. I can't get back to the command line/entry prompt, it won't accept any commands and, really, all I can do is close the window or quit the app altogether.
3. Is this just a glitch in the system or is there something else I should be doing to make this work correctly? TIA for any inputs/assistance.
Well I just cranked up top to give it a try and the only interactive command I can find that works (despite reading the man output a couple of times) is the "q" command which does perform the quit.
When top is in refresh mode it is only meant to display and refresh the number of processes that will fit on the screen.
If you just want to see the full list you can use the top -l1 command ie. log all the output one time.

Leopard causes Terminal to load on startup - Please help!
Hello all,
I just registered with the forum here hoping someone could help me figure out what is going on with my MacBook Pro after I installed Leopard. After the machine has started up the Terminal app will open a window with the following text in it:
Last login: Sat Oct 27 21:02:27 on console
MacBook-Pro:~ Drew$ /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SyncServicesUI.framework/Versions/A/SyncServi cesUI ; exit;
-bash: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SyncServicesUI.framework/Versions/A/SyncServi cesUI: cannot execute binary file
logout
[Process completed]
Also, there is a TextEdit window open with the header "HP Communications" but nothing is in it.
Neither of these things happened prior to the install while running 10.4 Does anyone have any suggestions that could help. I can close them after startup but it is an issue I want to correct.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!I'm also using a MacBook Pro, and when I startup Leopard, the Terminal application loads with the following window:
Last login: Tue Oct 30 08:19:58 on console
/Library/StartupItems/HP\ Trap\ Monitor/HP\ Trap\ Monitor ; exit;
You have new mail.
(my user name is here)ls-computer:~ (my name is here)$ /Library/StartupItems/HP\ Trap\ Monitor/HP\ Trap\ Monitor ; exit;
/Library/StartupItems/HP Trap Monitor/HP Trap Monitor: line 47: $1: unbound variable
logout

I have no idea what is causing this, and I would like help also. I'll keep looking. Good luck. -
We have several 2008R2 Terminal Servers with roughly 40 users working on each of them. Everytime a user logs on or off with printer redirection enabled in his RDP client (we use the Easy print feature), all other users experience a freeze of
10 seconds on that server. Needless to say, this behaviour of the server is not acceptable. We searched all of Google and implemented and tested every proposed solution, including the registry additions to the lanman part but all with no effect. Can anyone
provide us with a possible solution? It would be immensely appreciated!Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
Once user is successfully log on, can able to print the document easily?
Which version of client OS & RDP using for your environment?
Initially I would like you to try installing latest RDP 8.1 if you are using Windows 7 and if using Windows XP then please use RDP 7. In addition check .Net Framework 3.5 or higher installed. Apart as Bruno suggested, please check the latest driver installed
on RDS server. Also check the Event log for any information. For more detail, refer below article.

What causes Terminal beep delay?
Sometimes in the Terminal, when I hit backspace when nothing is typed, it takes a second before it beeps. I know this is a weird question, but what determines when it does? Is there any pattern?
Hi-
I think it's just a matter of the Mac needing to load the beep sound and set up the audio hardware to make it beep. I bet if start paying attention, you'll find that the delay is the first time it beeps after you start Terminal, or after it's been sitting without activity for a long time.

Terminal hang on opening second tab
hi,
I hope this is the right forum.
Since I upgraded to 10.5, my Terminal keeps crashing as I open a second tab or a new window. This doesn't always happen, but when it happens, this behaviour will continue until I reboot OS X. Then it may be gone for a while or, if I'm unlucky, not.
As a power-terminal-user, this is very disturbing. It even happens with non-OsX-Terminals like iTerm or Terminator. On opening a second terminal window, there is no response from the window and according to top the terminal application I opened the second tab in has an average CPU usage of 99%.
There is no .profile or something, I tried it with bash and zsh as a standard shell, there's no difference.
Please, is there a solution?I am having this problem too, but only if I run a certain program that leaves a lot of hanging processes around. Other symptoms I noticed:
* Many processes owned by root called "login". I see that there is one even when it's working normally, but I was getting something like 10.
* Typing common commands ("ps") in an existing terminal window caused some sort of kernel-level loop that could not be killed.
Even reboot hung, so I have been forced to power-down, twice so far. -
I use always open Terminal with some scripts running in parallel, and specific command history what I need frequently, for that it has great tab functionality. I really like that I can rename them to my processes.
But it has appeared several times that after some time - I assume after standby cycles, or dock/undock tab row on top of Terminal just disappears. I can still select next/previous tab using menu or shortcuts, and open new tabs, but the tab bar is gone. Tab bar is ok on new Terminal window, but this looses my state (long-running processes, history, folders) from the other Terminal window.
It seems to be just a bug in the latest Lion, should I post it to bug system?You can drag a tab off of the Terminal.app session to create a separate window, if that's what is happening to you marauder37. Dragging the tabs on the windows back to the tab bar on one Terminal.app window works to restore those, though merging the tabs into a window is easier. But if the tab bar is disappearing entirely (as the OP describes), then AFAIK there's something odd going on with the settings, the groups, etc. Certainly worth a try to get the tabs back, but it still seems like there's a bug here.

Since the title more or less holds the whole issue I'll leave it at that. Could I have set something to cause Terminal to keep opening? If so, can it be unset? If not, how do I know what to type to move from having downloaded the application to getting it to run? The recent problem has be Adobe Digital Editions, yes all this just to try to read an e-book. It would have been easier to have paid and got it straight to the kindle. Thanks.

TOP 10 things you should AVOID in a OLTP DB
So, what do you think?

This post is serious, please give you're expert opinion.
Cheers! And enjoy.This post is serious, please give you're expert opinion.OK, here are mine:
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_worst_practices.htm
Inadequate Indexing - One of the top causes of excessive I/O during SQL execution is missing indexes, especially function-based indexes, and failure to tune the instance according to the SQL load is a major worst practice. It's no coincidence that the Oracle 10g SQLAccess advisor recommends missing indexes.
Poor optimization of initialization parameters - The worst Oracle practice of all is undertaking to tune your SQL before these global parameters have been optimized to the workload.
Poor Schema Statistics Management - The Oracle worst practice (before 10g automatic statistics collection) was to re-analyze the schema on a schedule, forgetting that the purpose of re-analyzing schema statistics is to change your production execution plans. This worst practice has become so commonplace that it has been dubbed the "Monday Morning Suprise". Shops with strict production change control procedures forget that analyzing the production schema can effect the execution of thousands of SQL statements.
Poor change control testing - This is the worst of the worst practices, where an Oracle shop relies on a "test case proof" to preview how a database change will effect production behavior.
No performance tracking - With STATSPACK (free) and AWR in Oracle10g, there is no excuse for not tracking your database performance. STATSPACK and AWR provide a great historical performance record and set the foundation for DBA predictive modeling.

How can I get rid of this command in Terminal?
Few days ago, I was trying to install Mysql database on leopard. When I was following the instruction to install it, I accidentally typed echo 'setenv PATH /usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH' instead of echo 'export PATH=/usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH' in terminal. Right now, whenever I start Terminal, I will get this message:
Last login: Fri Jan 11 01:22:57 on console
-bash: setenv: command not found
Is there a way I can get rid of the ~bash: setenv: command not found comment? I really hope someone can help me. Thank you!!!Where did you type it? If you typed it while editing your .bashrc, remove that line from your .bashrc. If you typed it while editing your .profile, remove that line from your .profile. If you typed it while editing /etc/bashrc remove that line from /etc/bashrc. You get the idea.
Your post makes it very unclear what you actually did to create the problem, so it is hard to tell you how to solve it. In particular, typing
echo 'setenv PATH /usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH'
would cause Terminal to spew
setenv PATH /usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH
immediately and only once. Without any error messages. Ever. So that's not what you did. -
Placing ScrollBar Back On Top Of The JScrollPane
Hi....
Just a tiny problem......I have a problem placing the scrollbar back on top of the JScrollPane after few sentences of words are placed into the JTextArea at once. The JTextArea is within the JScrollPane.
Does anyone has any idea on how I can position the scrollbar back on top of the JScrollPane after the words are placed into the JTextArea.....???
BritneyJust some additional comments for anyone who is searching for this solution in the future (as I was today)...
Neither of these two lines of code did anything by itself. The scrollbar was left at the bottom of the text area.
myScrollPane.getVerticalScrollBar().setValue(0);
myScrollPane.scrollRectToVisible(new Rectangle(0,0,1,1));This line by itself basically worked - the scroll pane was reset to the top so that you could see the top line of text. However, if I had previously scrolled down, the scroll bar was not reset all the way to the top (it was just a tad below the top).
myTextArea.setCaretPosition(0);To get the scroll pane AND scroll bar to reset to the top, I used BOTH of the following lines of code. This is definitely the best solution I have found:
myTextArea.setCaretPosition(0);
myScrollPane.getVerticalScrollBar().setValue(0);Something else I had tried in the past was this:
SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
myScrollPane.getViewport().setViewPosition(new Point(0, 0));
});This worked in that it reset the scroll pane to the top, but you could see it scroll down to the bottom as text was added, and THEN it reset to the top, causing a "flashing" effect.
Hope this helps anyone struggling with this issue in the future.

After enabling root user terminal won't do anything at all.
I enabled the root user with Directory Utility. this all workedfine untill I opened up terminal and found that it would not do anything. it will not even loar the usual fields showing where the curent directory is or what user i'm loged in as ect. nothing seems to working and I can type but it will not execute commands. What can i do to fix this?
Besides answering X423424X's questons, it would be helpful if you would actually post any errors you are seeing in the terminal (Copy and Paste would be good). As it is now we have to guess.
Also as X423424X says, enabling root in and of itself would not cause Terminal problems. -
Is there a way to place the Dock on the top?
Hi there,
Back in the days of 10.4, "defaults write com.apple.Dock orientation top" (in Terminal) or Onyx for that matter, were able to place the Dock on the top. Is there a way to accomplish this in Snow Leopard? Because of my workstyle, the Dock gets in the way quite frequently. Besides, I use 3rd party app launchers.
Many thanks for your feedback and have a good one,
JacoboDon't know of a way to get the Dock on the top.
But, to keep it out of the way but available, in the Dock prefs pane in System Preferences you can set it to "automatically hide and show". Choosing that setting means the Dock will normally be hidden; to gain access to it, all you need do is brush the bottom of the screen (or the side you have Doc set to) with the cursor, and it will appear, staying visible only until you move the cursor away.
You can also use the keyboard combo Command-Option-D to invoke/revoke Dock Hiding, which in effect means you can use that keyboard command to toggle the Dock's visibility. -
[SOLVED] Guake terminal GTK3
Hi,
Could someone help me with a PKGBUILD for the GTK3 branch of the Guake drop down terminal?
It can be found on: https://github.com/Guake/guake/tree/gtk3
As a template I've used the AUR "guake-git" PKGBUILD. I also adjusted the dependancies, but I'm not sure about the build options.
pkgname=guake-gtk3

My problem is basically that Firefox is deadly slow and unusable because of its slowness. It takes about 5 minutes (I haven't timed it) to bring up a window after I click on the Firefox icon in the dock. It beachballs for a while after the window comes up, and then for about five minutes after I click on the "new tab" button next to the current tab, directly above the address bar.
When I went to get the Troubleshooting Information, it didn't take too long. I was able to click on the Help menu, ask for troubleshooting, wait (a while), and then once the page loaded, I was able to copy the information and scroll around the troubleshooting page without difficulty. Other than that, I haven't had the patience to get to any websites. I'm sending this request from inside Safari.
I used Firefox 24 without any problem. I was unable to automatically upgrade to Firefox 25, so I downloaded it, deleted the old application, and went on my way. I started having this problem, so I took some steps based on the Knowledge Base (not listed in the order I tried them in):
I reset Firefox
I reinstalled Firefox (deleted the old application from the applications folder and dragged in the application from the mounted .dmg again)
I deleted the profile folder
I restarted my computer
I confirmed that I'm not running antivirus software
I verified and repaired my disk with Disk Utility, which showed no errors
I ran Rember (one pass), which showed no errors
I started Firefox in Safe Mode
I have twice now gotten the red bar that says, "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem." I am not running antivirus. I tried renaming places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old (there was no places.sqlite-journal), which prevented the red bar from coming up the next time I started Firefox, but two or three Firefox force-quits and relaunches later, it's back again.
Right now I'm looking at 'top' in Terminal, and here's Firefox:
PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #WQ #POR #MREG RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VPRVT VSIZE PGRP PPID STATE UID
454 firefox 0.0 00:02.80 25 2 183 534 64M 47M 102M 120M 2894M 454 144 sleeping 1049
Could it be a plugin? I'm not sure where to get this information.
I can post logs from Rember and Disk Utility if that would help.
I am also currently trying to load about:crashes, but right now Firefox is trying to load "https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional?blahblahblah" and there is a little thing that says "Looking up support.cdn.mozilla.net..." at the bottom of the window, so I'm waiting for it to give up on that. To give you an idea of how long it's taking, it already was trying to reach this URL when I started writing this.
Thanks in advance!Here is the new troubleshooting information, if it helps.

Laptop-mode draws more power than no laptop-mode
Hey all,
I finally took the plunge and installed laptop-mode-tools. I edited the main configuration file to my liking and enabled those extra powersaving features I need. The other ones I have disabled. However, when I enable laptop-mode my battery is drained faster than without! I am pretty sure this is not what it should do
I'm clueless as for where to look though, because I didn't change any critical setting (AFAIK) and I didn't enable any 'extra' features: i just enabled those found in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d that I need and disabled those that I don't need. Can you help me pin-point which feature of laptop-mode-tools draws more power out of my battery?
Here's the list of features I have enabled:
auto-hibernate.conf
dpms-standby.conf
ethernet.conf
intel-hda-powersave.conf
intel-sata-powermgmt.conf
lcd-brightness.conf
nmi-watchdog.conf
runtime-pm.conf
sched-mc-power-savings.conf
sched-smt-power-savings.conf
terminal-blanking.conf
usb-autosuspend.conf
wireless-power.conf
Those that I have disabled:
ac97-powersave.conf
battery-level-polling.conf
bluetooth.conf
configuration-file-control.conf
cpufreq.conf
eee-superhe.conf
exec-commands.conf
hal-polling.conf
start-stop-programs.conf
video-out.conf
wireless-ipw-power.conf
wireless-iwl-poweac97-powersave.conf
battery-level-polling.conf
bluetooth.conf
configuration-file-control.conf
cpufreq.conf
eee-superhe.conf
exec-commands.conf
hal-polling.conf
start-stop-programs.conf
video-out.conf
wireless-ipw-power.conf
wireless-iwl-power.confr.conf
Thanks in advance!
PS: if you need any files, please tell me. As I said I am clueless what could cause this, so I could give you a list of all the laptop-mode files I have edited but I don't think this would help anything.
EDIT: I have disabled the cpufreq one because I use cpupower and have that setup without any laptop-mode-tools interference. I use the on-demand governor all the time. An extra question: do I need those sched-{mc,smt} features in laptop-mode, if I have configured those in cpupower as well? For now I left them in, but I was gonna figure this one out still.
Last edited by Unia (2012-04-20 17:55:51)Finally had the time to do some testing with powertop. The highest result I get are these:
Top causes for wakeups:
35,8% (309,7) [Rescheduling interrupts] <kernel IPI>
28,8% (248,8) PS/2 toetsenbord/muis/touchpad interrupt
The first I have also without laptop-mode, the second I don't have. However, it does seem to drain a little slower now. Anyway, any hints to persue to get those wakeups down?
PS: powertop also suggested this:
Suggestion: Enable the CONFIG_INOTIFY kernel configuration option.
This option allows programs to wait for changes in files and directories
instead of having to poll for these change
Does the Arch kernel have that by default or do I have to build my own kernel for this?
