Top menu bar not permanently visible. HELP

a friend borrowed my laptop and when it got back to me, the top menu bar is invisible whenever i'm browsing or opening application. it only appears if i move my mouse over to the top... i want it to be permanently visible all the time so i don't have to move my mouse over all the time. HELP! thanks.

Your friend must have installed some third-party hack to make that happen.
There appears to be a lot of Google hits on the subject.

  • Menu bar not appears in some applications.

    Hi, all!
I have a strange problem and really need help:
top menu bar not appears, when i start some applications.
For example, Numbers, keynote, quicktime and, in the end, Finder!
Problem solves when i replace the .app file of the application with the file from another computer, but it appears again with another application. No errors, no messages, just no menu bar in the top.
I don't know why it happens and don't know how to diagnose this problem.

Sometimes something as simple as restarting the computer will resolve system quirks. If that does not work, boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.

Ive bought Apple TV and upgrade my macbook air Os X ver 10.8.2 but i could not see the airplay on the top menu bar . please help! thank you.

The ability to use AirPlay is BOTH an OS requirement(Mountain Lion) AND has hardware requirements.  You need to check and see if your 2010 Air will support Airplay.

  • Please Help SL - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing

Please Help. Snow Leopard - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing.
Basically, I have been using snow leopard for about 1-2 weeks now without any problems, apart from the strange trackpad expose glitch, but I can live with that. But a new problem has arisen that I CANNOT live with. Basically I plugged in my MiniDisplay > VGA adaptor and a Wacom internet tablet for the first time. And when it booted up rather than just the usual spinning gear, their was a progress bar as-well. Then it booted into Safe Mode.?
Everything was fine in safe mode apart from spotlight didn't work properly so I rebooted and this time it loaded normally. EXCEPT about 5 minutes after I logged on the top menu bar started to flash on and off about ever 1-2 seconds and virtually every single application would quit unexpectedly before even loading. I haven't really looked into it apart from a quick search on google which doesn't seem to bring up anything similar, but atm I am having to use my bootcamp partition with windows installed (shock horror :D) just so I can browse the internet.
    Additional details -
I have tried resetting PRAM + NVRAM with no joy
While logging on (before it crashes), menu items (e.g. Airport, Battery Indicator, Facebook Notifier) all load up on the far right BEFORE the clock, which never happened before the problem, don't know if this will help isolate the problem, but its worth mentioning..
Don't really want to go down the fresh install route if possible, as I did this with leopard about 2 months before Snow Leopard was released

I noticed it some weeks after installing Snow Leopard, and didn't think much about it since I have a Wacom mouse, and the Wacom driver often has some little peculiarities at startup with the Mac OS--sometimes everything is perfectly ordinary, there will be an OS update and a little oddness shows up, the driver eventually gets updated and the oddness disappears until some other OS update, and so on. I just figured that was what it was until my brother asked about the missing the menu bar after startup, which reappears with a click. He doesn't use a Wacom mouse, but he does have some other 3rd party mouse. I don't know whether 3rd party mouse drivers are at fault or not. But it is not a problem with the SystemUIServer.....the entire menu bar is missing, not just a goof-up on the Spotlight end, where SystemUIServer is in charge of things. Since simply clicking the mouse brings the menu bar up I've never even bothered to check the logs to see if anything is noted there.

  • Firefox 4: the drop down menus in the top menu bar will not appear in Google pages.

Firefox 4: the drop down menus in the top menu bar will not appear in Google pages. For example, when I click "more" it is like clicking a dead link. Nothing happens. When I click the "tools" icon or my email address to log out, same thing.

Could you do the following please.
In the location bar at the top, type '''about:config''' and hit Enter
In the filter at the top, copy/paste the following setting:
    '''browser.urlbar.maxRichResults'''
If the figure on the right is a single number, or a minus figure i.e. '''-1''', right click it, choose '''Modify''', remove the current setting and replace it with the figure "'''12'''".
Then close Firefox and restart it again.
I went to Google Maps, but as you can see from the screenshot, directions appear to be working.

  • Sync Icon On my Top Menu Bar Suddenly Appearing !

    Hi,
After 3 weeks of Lion, Icloud and Ios 5 Update, I notice the sync Icon on my Top Menu Bar. On clicking it it shows me SYNC NOW option.
What is this for ? It was never there earlier and I have not changed a single setting & not done any recent updates either. Why is this suddenly appearing. On  Googling for the same it shows only how to remove it by Option Dragging it off... But does not say how to get it back. Do i need this ?
The only change I Notice  just yesterday when I saw this Sync Symbol, is that on adding or deleting Calendar events on my Iphone, I would have to launch iCal on my Imac Earlier to see the updates. But now even though iCal is off (QUIT), it automatically launches and updates the entry. This is great but I only want to know how is this all happening automatically since just yesterday.
On my other User profiles it is not hapening automatically and the sync icon is not visible !
    Please help.
    thanks
    cyrus !

you can remove the sync icon by holding down the command key and then drag the sync icon from your menu bar

  • Top Menu Bar

    Hi,
I need to know if you can move or make the top menu bar disapear - I have a program that opens up and the top part of the program is hidden underneath it and I can't move the window to get to the programs controls.
    Thanks for the help.
    John

    Hi thehbull1,
I don't know what application you talking about, but did you try to trash the preferences of that application.
After you did it will be open normally.
Also you can try to drag the application window smaller an drag it by holding the mouse button down until the menu is visible again.
But I would try the first option first.
    Good luck ...

  • Top Menu Bar Freezing

Hey, I just noticed this today, I'm not sure how long it's been going on though. On my Powerbook G4, certain top menu bar items, all that have to do with OS X, including the TIME, SPOTLIGHT, AIRPORT MONITOR, as well as SOUND CONTROL freeze temporarily. Thus, the time freezes and does not display the correct time. Instead it displays the time at which the freeze occured. When you mouseover any of these items, the rainbow wheel appears. Has anyone had this problem? Possible fix? Thanks a lot!

Hi, Spencer and Inspired, et.al. —
Edit: Inspired's post appeared while I was editing what's below. We clearly agree on potential solutions. Since I've listed a few additional suggestions, I'll post this as a complement to Inspired's excellent response . . .
Some background and a few ideas for you to try —
The items on the right side of the menu bar are called "menu extras," and are managed by a process named SystemUIServer. When the behavior you've described is occurring, you may want to open Activity Monitor and check whether SystemUIServer is "hanging." If so, this may be a temporary situation. Your logs may provide an indication of what's causing the problem (I'd check system.log and console.log first). Please post back if you'd like help doing this.
From various readers' reports and solutions, this kind of problem can be caused by a number of things — including Spotlight activity, corrupted .plist files, incompatible 3rd-party "menu extras," etc.
For now, you may want to try these ideas (one at a time):
      (1) Check that it's not simply an issue with Spotlight activity &/or indexing. If it is, waiting a little should do the trick.
      (2) Locate these two files, move them to the trash, and restart:
         ~/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
         ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ com.apple.systemuiserver.xxxxxxxxxxxx.plist.
After restarting, these preference files will be regenerated. But please note that you may have to reset all of your preferences involving menu extras — or launch them from the "Menu Extras" folder, as described above.
      (3) Identify any 3rd-party "menu extras" you have installed, and disable them — then check to see the impact of this change. If you have unsanity's Application Enhancer system (APE) installed, you may have to use its preference panel and uninstall it.
      (4) Try locating and re-enabling menu extras — either from their respective System Preferences or (not all have prefs) from their path: Go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras. All of the menu extras are located here. (SystemUIServer is also located in the CoreServices folder.) Double-click to re-enable any of the menu extras that are currently disabled. Note that, if you make a mistake, you can click on any menu extra and ⌘-drag it to a diffferent location or off the menu bar entirely. You may want to restart (some would say to also repair permissions) after doing this — but I can't confirm this is necessary.
      (5) In several situations (that I mention only as a ~"last resort"), users have used Pacifist to extract a "fresh" copy of SystemUIserver from their Install Disc or, e.g., from the 10.4.3 Combo Update Package and replacing the existing copy of SystemUIServer. Note that there are supporting files — so please post back to discuss this if you eventually decide it's warranted.
I hope one of these solutions that have worked for others is helpful.
Please feel free to post back and discuss things further . . .
    Good luck!

  • Spinning ball pops up every time and the top menu bar keeps flashing

The problem started today, for no apparent reason. I was working with some programs open (not many) when my screen froze. Nothing worked, so I closed the laptop to see if it would return to the home page (where you type the password) soon after I heard the 'apple sound'. The computer was restarted, when opened, there was a gray folder with an white question mark flashing in the center of the screen. I restarted the computer again.
From this time he began to have symptoms that persist until now:
    • Every time I do some action on any application the spinning beach ball appears and for a few seconds the program is locked.
    • The top menu bar - where the icons are located ( bluetooth, dropbox, battery, spotlight, etc.) flashes every 40 seconds.
I use this computer for work and thus can hardly surf the internet.
I hope someone can help me finding a solution to this.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 top Menu bar?

    Hi everyone,
I have just bought Photoshop Elements 8 after using PSE5 for about 18 months or so.  I am having difficulty in reading the top menu bar where the black text is shown against a very dark grey (dark sea grey in model aeroplane terms). Can any one tell me if it is possible to change the colour/shade of this top menu bar to some more easily visible combination, say something like PSE5, with which I had no problems?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Dr. How.

Unfortunately, your only options are that, or the white on black (preferences>general), which is actually less awful for most people (a bit more contrast), but still  not good.

Top menu bar is missing after upgrading to yosemite

The Library file  has been hidden for some time now. So not surprised you are confused upgrading from Snow leopard.
The easiest way to view this folder is to use the Go menu and press the alt key. This exposes the folder in the list.
    Hope this helps.

When I click iphoto it hops and the top menu bar comes up but that is it no files and albums come up it just has my front page pic

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
