Toplink Vs. JPA (Am I doing it right...)

Hi All,
I am fairly new to Java & JSF and have a question regarding Toplink and JPA.
Recently I attended an oracle training and the instructor said that JPA was the way to go, it's "Faster, simpler and more efficient"
After my class I had an Oracle consultant help with our project and he suggested Toplik, come to find out only because he didn't know JPA...
Also I ahve a need to access my Classes from my backing beans and when the Oracle consultant showed me how to do it he said that he didn't even know how to do it but had a snippet of code which worked... (Great value for money from Oracle lol)
Anyway here is what I am doing now, any opinions on weather this is right / the best way would be great. I am not doubting the work done by the consultant, but I would really like to understand and know that this is the right/best way to do things.
Thanks in Advance
I have a SQL Table (MenuItems)
I use the Toplink Jave Objects From Tables wizard to generate my MenuItem Class and add a bunch of Toplink Queries
I then create a JavaServiceFacade which encompases all my Toplink queries as methods
Now I craete a data control from my Java Service Facade
I register my DataControl in the Databindings.cpx
<dc id="MenuItemPublicFacadeDataControl path="com.gilead.gnet.model.MenuItemPublicFacadeDataControl"/>
Now this is that part that the Oracle guy said he didn't know but had a snippet
FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
ValueBinding vb = fc.getApplication().createValueBinding("#{data}");
BindingContext bctx = (BindingContext)vb.getValue(fc);
DCDataControl dc = bctx.findDataControl("MenuItemPublicFacadeDataControl");
MenuItemPublicFacade facade = (MenuItemPublicFacade)dc.getDataProvider();
return facade.findParentMenuItems();
Now I can build my menu from the list of menu Items.
Thanks again
Jeremy

  • Crucial question about Toplink Essentials JPA in OC4J 10.1.3.3

    Hi all!
    I'm developing an EJB 3.0 service which will be deployed to an OracleAS 10.1.3.3 and even after I've read lots of docs and articles, I still got an unanswered question:
    I know JPA leaves concurrent data access to the application's responsibility (or the vendor implementation's), that Oracle explicitly recommends using @Version to enable JPA's standard optimistic locking and also that Toplink Essentials JPA is OC4J's default persistence provider for EJB 3.0 modules. Considering this last important fact, what will be the default locking mode assumed by Toplink Essentials if I don't use @Version?
    Looking at Toplink Essentials JPA extensions doc preview for OC4J 11g (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/toplink/jpa/resources/toplink-jpa-extensions.html), I found that I can use @OptimisticLocking to define the locking policy when defining an entity and use a lock type that doesn't require me to define a @Version field. But that annotation doesn't exist in version 10.1.3.3. Is there another way to define locking policy and type (on global or per entity basis) in version 10.1.3.3?
    Any help will be really welcome!
    TIA,
    Eduardo.

    Quoting Mr. Doug Clarke:
    "Eduardo,
    The only way to ensure that concurrent writers to the database don't overwrite one another is to either lock optimistically or pessimistically (i.e.: SELECT ... FOR UPDATE). Both of these approaches are supported by Oracle TopLink as well as TopLink Essentials. If neither is used then no locking is applied and the last writer will succeed leaving the database in a potentially corrupted state. Also note that minimal writes are used so each thread only updates the columns it changes so the resulting state of the database could be a combination of the two concurrent writes. Users of JPA are strongly recommended to use optimistic locking to ensure concurrent writing scenarios do not produce unexpected result in their database.
    Our JPA implementation in 10.1.3.3 is TopLink Essentials which is the Open Source references implementation of JPA derived from Oracle TopLink developed in GlassFish. This edition of TopLink only has support for JPA's @Version annotation as you noted. This approach does require a dedicated column in the database table for comparison on write to detect changes made since this thread's version of the original data was read.
    In Oracle TopLink 11g we have implemented JPA 1.0 in our product. This means that full capabilities of TopLink are available through JPA along with some custom annotations to assist in configuring them. This includes the additional optimistic locking policies provided for schemas where adding version columns is not possible. These capabilities are not included in TopLink Essentials. Customers can access these capabilities in the 11gR1 technology previews as well as in the new Eclipse Persistence Services Project "EclipseLink" which is the full functionality of Oracle TopLink developed as an open source solution. Oracle TopLink 11g and its distribution of EclipseLink are not yet available in a supported release."

  • Need Toplink essentials JPA book

    Hi
    Right now i am using Toplink essentials JPA in my project. can u suggest a tutorial for it to refer. pls send me that link also.
    Thank you

    As far as a book goes I would recommend Pro EJB 3: Java Persistence.

  • RealPlayer says I Need to Open a Port For Chat to Work, Am I doing it Right

    I have live feeds for CBS's Big Brother. I'm trying to get on their Chat and I get a Java IOException error, cannot connect to server, etc.
    RealPlayer is insisting I have to open port 21 and/or 6667 in my router (AEBS).
    I entered 21, 6667 in all 4 port fields. Under Private IP address, I put my computer's number. Under "service". I didn't touch that.
    Am I doing this right? Cuz it's still not working for me. I know other Leopard users are able to get into this chat and I think it has something to do with my AEBS. I even loaded the developer version of the latest Java to no avail.
    Suggestions?

    Your firewall is off. That's good for now. Make sure that you Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol in Internet/Internet Connections/NAT tab. Also, do you have a static IP on your machine? Or are you getting your IP via DHCP. This info is in the OS System preferences/Network/Advanced? tab. Then click on the TCP/IP settings.To get the ports forwarded correctly you'll need to set a static IP (manual) on your machine. But you'd think in all their wisdom that Real would have NAT enabled chat. Meaning, you should get out with DHCP and NAT enabled. No forwards needed.
    Setting a static IP on your machine is relatively easy but affects other things on your network and you have to do a bit of planning to set it up.
    In a nutshell:
    Set up an IP address on your machine outside the scope of IP's being distributed by your router.
    Map a port that resolves to that specific port.
    I think you did it right above but didn't possibly have a static ip to resolve to.
    Hopefully I am not confusing you with all this.

  • How to use (toplink essentials)JPA with EJB 2.1 spec in oc4j 10.1.3.2

    I have an application that uses EJB 2.1 spec with SLSB (no entity beans) and uses DAO pattern with hibernate2 for persistence. I want to replace hibernate with toplink-essentials (JPA). I cannot upgrade the EJB spec version as we use some thirdparty beans. The application uses DAO pattern so I should be able to hook in a new toplink DAO impl. What I am struggling with is how do I get hold of the EntityManagerFactory in my EJB 2.1 SLSB. Also I need CMT with XA transactions as our application interacts with jms and database using MDBs and SLSBs.
    Prantor

    You should be able to use Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory(<your-persistence-unit-name>, properties), and create your EntityManager from that.
    To have TopLink integrated with JTA, in your persistence.xml (or properties) you need to use a JTA DataSource, and set the ServerPlatform for your JEE server.

    Why does the Right-click -> "t" delete a bookmark on the bookmark toolbar, when Right-click -> "t" opens a new tab elsewhere in Firefox. The bookmark toolbar use Right-click -> "w" to open in a new tab. Please change this to "t" to... I keep deleting all my bookmark because you don't make the commands consistent!

    If you have accidentally removed bookmarks then use "Organize > Undo" in the bookmarks manager (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) to get them back.<br />
    The Organize button is the first of the three buttons on the toolbar in the Library (Bookmarks Manager).<br />
    That only works if you haven't closed Firefox.

    I have another kind of problem with Firefox

    While I was browsing the internet suddenly nothing would happen when I clicked a link. Upon closing and opening firefox and trying to load a web page it said "the proxy server is refusing connection. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections."
    I did manage to fix the problem by changing the proxy settings from manual to auto-detect but what disturbs me is how those settings could be changed without me doing so right in the middle of using the internet. I dont know if its a bug or a security issue but I thought I would let you guys know.

    I am trying to send photos to the cloud from my phone to my iPad but they are not appearing in the stream. I have read the instructions and I think I am doing it right or am I missing a part of the process?

    HI,
    Have you done this before ? And if so, is photo stream turned on on your iphone and ipad. and as Alfred DeRose pointed out they must both on the same icloud account.
    If you're new to this, you might want to do some research. Photo stream is different from camera roll and albums. Many have been on this sight looking for their photos stored in icloud after restore, etc. and they're not there. Also, after thirty days icloud deletes your photos from photo stream.
    So if you're not aware, you might want to google your question. We're using the camera connection kit soon and I am learning about it. From all I've read, I'm also not the biggest icloud fan. I use dropbox. We plan to put photos taken on ipad with a camera/iphones into albums on the ipad. We'll keep all on the sd card until (and after) they can be uploaded to a computer.
    An example of an article we can learn from -
    http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/how-to-understand-and-work-with-your-iclo ud-photo-stream
    Hope this helps.

  • Today I tried to update to IOS 8 on my ipad 4. I thought I was doing everything right. I did it through itunes. I backed up before starting. It now is frozen. itunes says it's in recovery mode.get error 3014. HELP!

    Today I tried to update to IOS 8 on my ipad 4. I thought I was doing everything right. I did it through itunes.  I updated iTunes to 11.4.  I backed up before starting. It now is frozen. itunes says it's in recovery mode. The only options it gives me is to Restore so I say ok... after a few seconds  I get get error 3014.  It says this ipad can not be restored.  It has a button to click for more info which leads me to this page:  Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"
    Please help, I have a back up I just can't get to it.  Why did this happen!!!
    HELP!

    I have since tried a few more things... suggestions found online...
    I tried using another computer, same house same internet link though... it downloaded the update again, took about an hour & a half but as soon as it finished it said it could not restore because "device could not be found".  I unplugged my ipad then plugged it back in so it would "see"  it but it just went right back to the "ipad in recovery mode needs to be restored"... then the same error 3014.
    I don't know if the computer can sense the ipad or what's going on.  On the screen when it wants to do the restore it has an icon of an ipad & it says "Serial Number: n/a
    The next thing I tried...  was right clicking iTunes & choosing "Run as Administrator".  It started another hour & a half download of the update... but then when it was done it went right back to the error 3014.
    Is there nothing that can help?!?

  • Does Firefox has this option (which I may not know) to click on my bookmark, link, etc. where to open a new tab without doing this right-click, it is aggravating?

    Hello, I would like to use Firefox as my default browser, but the reason I still use the old Netscape Navigator is that that clicking on my bookmarks Firefox is not opening new tab. Does Firefox has this option (which I may not know) to click on my bookmark, link, etc. where to open a new tab without doing this right-click, it is aggravating?

    Install the addon
    Open Bookmarks in New Tab 0.1.2010043001.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-bookmarks-in-new-tab/
    Restart on installation.

    everything should be on your computer.
    If you do as you should and make sure that everything is on your computer, then you should lose nothing.

  • Can someone please verify if I'm doing this right?

    OBJECTIVE:
    Write a program that asks a user to enter in one input, either "true" or "false". Simulate the NOT gate in this program. After the user has entered in an input, ask them if they would like to continue or not; continue the program if they reply 'y' and stop if they reply 'n'.
    I think this program is pretty easy, but I am not sure if I am doing it right. My understanding of the NOT gate is that if someone enters in something, it must be the opposite. So since the user is only being asked one question, and to only answer "true" or "false", the answer would be opposite to what they input right? Below is the source code of my program for the above objective, please check to see if it is right :).
    // The "Chap3Program12" class.
    import java.awt.*;
    import hsa.Console;
    public class Chap3Program12
        static Console c;           // The output console
        public static void main (String [] args)
            c = new Console ();
            String input;
            char response;
            do
                c.println ("Please enter either 'true' or 'false'");
                input = c.readString ();
                c.println ();
                if (!(input.equals ("true")))
                    c.println ("You have entered " + input + ".  The result is true.");
                else
                    c.println ("You have entered " + input + ".  The result is false.");
                c.println ();
                c.println ("Do you wish to stop y/n?");
                c.println ();
                response = c.readChar ();
            while (response != 'y');
            c.println ();
            c.println ("This program has terminated.  Have a nice day!");
        } // main method
    } // Chap3Program12 class

    Sorry, I didnt post that properly, let me repost it.
    I compiled it and it works, but Im not sure if i am using my NOT gate properly, and if my program is satisfying the Objective.
    if (!(input.equals ("true")))
    c.println ("You have entered " + input + ".  The result is true.");
    else
    c.println ("You have entered " + input + ".  The result is false.");
    }If not true = false, then that means my if statement is wrong? My if statement says: If input is NOT equal to true, then the result is true. Shouldn't the result be false then? If not false = true, then that means my statement after else needs to be changed, because if not false = true, the result should be true, not false?
