Torch 9800 screen very faint

Hi,
My wife's Torch 9800 started playing up yesterday, upon sliding the screen up it would stay blank (although it's actually on just very very faint) until you slid it down again slightly at whcih point it would work as normal. It's gone downhill since then and now just stays faint no matter what you do with the slider.
Any ideas would be welcome.

Hello bristep123,
Welcome to the forums.
In this case we can try to reload the software on the BlackBerry® smartphone to make sure it is running the latest version and there are no issues with the OS.
Here is how to backup your BlackBerry smartphone http://bbry.lv/oPVWXc
Once you have backed up your BlackBerry smartphone please follow the link below to complete a clean reload of the BlackBerry smartphone software.
Link: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB03621
Once completed test it and proceed with a selective restore, here is how to restore http://bbry.lv/qgQxLo
If doing the above does not correct your issues then you will want to contact your wireless service provider or point of sale for options as it would appear to be a hardware issue.
Hope this helps. Have a good day.

  • Torch 9800 touch screen only works when slid open.

Hello everyone, this is my 1st post but I've been lurking the forum for some time. I'm running a Torch 9800 on AT&T right now on v6.0.0.600
This is what's happened with my phone: as the subject notes, my touch screen only seems to work when I slide open the phone.
What I've tried so far that doesn't work: rolling back software, rolling the software forward again, hard resets, soft resets, adjusting intervals for the touch screen.
The weird part is that I saw an older thread that had the exact opposite problem(touch screen only worked when the phone was slid closed). I have a level/ruler app for my phone and it's showing that the phone knows when it's tilted/angle/orientation. I've also closed the phone, opened it slightly (about the width of my thumb) and it stays horizontally oriented + I'm able to use the touch keyboard that way.
Anybody have a suggestion as to what I can try next to fix this? I haven't gone so far as to just go and get a 9810 yet, but i'm considering it.

    Thanks for the post.
Has it in anyway fallen or pressed hard at any point? It could be the belt, which would just need you to go with it to a certified repair center and get it secured.

  • My blackberry torch 9800 fell and now the screen is black.

My blackberry torch 9800 fell and now the screen is black.  It fell again and came back on, now the screen turned red, then it went black and it is not coming on at all.  please help!

    Hey mirs81,
From your description the BlackBerry smartphone was damaged when it was dropped, I would suggest contacting your point of sale for warranty and repair options.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
    Thanks.

  • Torch 9800 touch screen

I have been rebuilding/refurbishing a Torch 9800 and have replaced the LCD, Main Ribbon Flex and touchscreen among other parts. Only the right half of the touchscreen reacts to touch. The left half is non re-active. Any fix?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I just talked to a friend who repairs BlackBerrys.  He says you likely damaged the ribbon that connects the LCD to the main board.  He said he did the same thing once himself.
Post back with how you fare on this.  I'm curious, is it possible to take out the wobble in the display when touch typing with the device closed?  I've never had mine apart but have been considering it to do something about the rattle when I type.

  • I need help with my Blackberry Torch 9800 media card....

I've had my Blackberry Torch 9800 for almost a year now and I haven't faced a problem like this one before, One day, Out of nowhere, My blackberry started acting up, the lock button wouldn't work, the touch screen and keypad wouldn't work, I wasn't able to access anything. Then the batteries drained out all of a sudden, so I went home and charged it and I thought that there was something wrong with the battery, but then when it turned on again, it had erased all my media! All my photos, videos and music, and every time I finish charging my phone a prompt would pop up and say that my media card isn't formatted! So I wanted to know if there's anyway to fix this?! The bigger problem is that the rest of my data was on my laptop and it's hard disk crashed.....So now I have nowhere to go to to retrieve my files Is there any solution to this? It's really doing my head in! Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
While rare, spontaneous wiping and rebooting do happen on BBs. You, sadly, are the very unlucky one to also have your backups on your laptop wiped out by it's failure. Very bad luck indeed...hopefully you were backing up your laptop somewhere.
As with all restores, there must be a source...your BB will never be that source as it has no "deleted items" nor "recycle bin" from which to do so. Rather, an external backup source is required. Given your laptop situation, the only other source I can think of is if you had activated the FREE (with a proper BIS plan) BB Protect, and had been backing up your data "to the cloud"...if so, then that will be an available source for restore.
Sadly, if you have no source from which to restore, then that's the end of that hope...
In any event -- first, we need to make sure that you BB is actually OK...and that will require some work on your part. Here's what I recommend...
At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try this procedure to perhaps narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:
KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

  • Camera - Torch 9800 - Unable to capture the image

    Hey everyone!
Had a torch 9800 for 18 months now and always been working fine... until today.
I went to use the camera and it all seemed to open up fine but instead of seeing what the lens sees the screen was black. The centre focus [ ] was there and I could zoom back and forth just a black screen.
When I click for a photo I get a message " Unable to capture the image "
I have searched the web and found nothing conclusive. Battery pulls, a full wipe and installation of the o/s have made no difference to it's lack of function.
Does anyone out there have a suggestion?

I am having the exact same issue.  I also tried rebooting, taking out the battery and sim card and cleaning out the back, alas no difference.

  • AW version 4.3.0.26 installation story on a Torch 9800

This story began when I received a message that AW version 4.3.0.26 was available. I have a Torch 9800 with software version 6.0.0.706 and for the last 2 years every time I tried to install a new version of AW I ran into icon issues, either by clicking the AW icon it did not open the AW start up page or the icon could not be found. So I was curious what happen this time.
After I downloaded the new version and clicked the AW icon the app did not open. I checked the 'Application Management 'info and alas: AW was installed but already running showing CPU time had accumulated, i.e. AW was stuck in a loop.
I then tried to recover by pulling the battery a few times and uninstall/reinstall the AW software but to no avail. (This often is a quick fix but mostly not for a Torch 9800).
The only way I knew how to solve this issue was to wipe the phone but with an 'auto restore' feature for my current data. While this method wipes one's phone, i.e. it removes first all current device information and applications it is smart enough to reload all your device info and all apps including the paid apps later automatically.
I call this method 'auto restore'. A classic wipe leaves your phone with no data as suggested in other threads but then one has to reload  the backup data file  by hand to restore stuff but it does not restore your apps automatically and is quite cumbersome.
     Here are my initial conditions:
I have the newest DTM (Desktop Manger Software) installed, e.g. version 7.1.0.41
I have a copy of my current device software on my (Windows XP) PC
I made a backup file of my current data and apps
I had previously installed a valid ID
I installed the newest AW version, e.g. 4.3.0.26 (but with issues)
    Here are my actions:
    1) I selected 'Update' on DTM under 'Device' on the main DTM screen getting this message:
An updated BlackBerry Desktop Software component must be installed before you can continue.
    2) I selected 'Install'
    Windows Installer Window popped up.
Please wait while Windows configures BlackBerry Device Software Updater.
Existing BlackBerry software has been detected on your computer and must be closed before proceeding. Disconnect your device and click OK to close the applications. Otherwise click Cancel to stop the installation.
    3) I disconnect my phone and clicked OK.
DTM shut down and then restarted after the BlackBerry Desktop Software component installation was complete.
    4) I reconnected my phone and selected again 'Update' on DTM under 'Device' on the main DTM screen getting this message:
There are no BlackBerry Device Software updates available.
    5) I unchecked 'Keep me subscribed to email notifications' and selected 'View other versions'. I then selected 'Install' using the currently installed version with the default check mark.
DTM checked again for updates but now I got an 'Update Option' box with 2 default check marks:
    6) I unchecked 'Keep me subscribed to email notifications' and then clicked 'Install update'.
    7) After the 'auto restore' installation was complete I disconnected my phone and followed all prompts. (Make sure you can receive and send emails before you continue).
I then looked for the AW icon but this time it was not there!!! Normally this 'auto restore' resolved the 'non responsive click issue' but today it did not.
    8) I decided to delete the just installed AW version and then reinstalled it. Alas, finally the AW icon appeared and now it was responsive.
I followed the phone's prompts, installed my ID and then initialized my paid apps. It is important to do it in this order (install the ID first) or the paid apps will not work properly.
This 'Update' path method  which leads later to the 'auto restore' resolved my issues and all was good again.
Note: If you have a large music library on your phone as I have make sure it has stopped loading all files before you try to start your ID installation or you get some 'unwanted' messages.
While KB29422  suggests to install App World 4.0.0.55 to avoid the 'no show icon issue' I found that the 'auto restore’ method was always a good work around for either issue to have the latest AW version on my phone.
So this is my today's story which I wanted to share with the community. It might give you some new ideas to try out. I you liked it click either the 'thumb up' or ‘Like button' in the thread. Thx.

  • BLACKBERRY TORCH 9800

Hello everyone. A few days ago the screen of my blackberry torch 9800 stopped working, if i switch on my phone the keyboard and the red light on the too of the screen work, but the screen stays black. I would like to know if somebody else had this problem and if i have to change the entire screen to solve it or there's something else i can do. Thanks

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness shows up, the first thing to try is a proper reboot:
With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Failing that, I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.
If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may indeed have a hardware problem...for which no amount of OS or Software level "fixes" can be of any use.
Nevertheless, you may want to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.

  • TORCH 9800 " How to stop the DATA Wiping due to Problems with Password Input "

    PHONE  TYPE:
    Torch 9800 (1256)
    PROBLEM:
On Friday, April 5th ... after several attempts of inputting my screen password I was constantly told by the 9800  that the wrong password was being attempted; which I know I did input the right PW . [ I believe that one key pertaining to the PW string is faulty and therefore not accepting the right character ] . When I had suffered prior password issues after several attempts the 9800 indicated on the screen that I would be locked out for 15 minutes until I could attempt again. This time after attempting what I believe was 9 times I suffered a  "OMG"  (Oh My God) situation where-in I believe the screen indicated to me that information would be erased; at that point I saw a progressive bar appear on the screen with the word "WIPING"  and I immediately opened the back of the phone and removed the battery to stop the wipe at 40%.
One hour+ later I inserted the battery back into the 9800 and once again the data wipe bar appeared on the screen and I pulled the battery to halt the wipe at 20%.
I went to the Blackberry Official web site and sought out any solutions to stopping the data wipe in the Torch 9800 manuals and other service areas and there was no mention of the data wipe. I sought out other web sites for solutions and there was none... I also referenced   a number of Black Berry forums and found that there where mentions of the same issue I was experiencing BUT no solutions.
I then pulled my sim card and inserted it into another Torch 9800  I maintain as a backup and when I went to my Mac Book Pro to connect the alternate 9800  and transfer data to it from the Blackbery desktop manager I was told their was a system failure. I attempted several times to in the dialogue box to copy data and settings from another device and again a system failure appeared. I again went to BB Torch Forums and found out that there have been a number of issues with Apple Macs and back up and transfers of data to Torch 9800 .
On Saturday I contacted Telstra Mobile Technical support and was connected to a Black Berry technical solution specialist who after referring to their BB manual and speaking to colleagues informed me that they saw NO work around solution.
I am therefore appealing to Blackberry wisemen & women to inform me if there is a solution to either obtain my backup data from my Mac and or to halt the Torch 9800 from wiping out my data if I have been able to pull the battery from the device. I have been user of Blackberry devices from the pagers of 1999 and have owned and operated over 14 BBs since along with my wife who is now on her first.
I am looking forward to your reply.

Sorry to hear that you're experincing such issues !
    canadagoose wrote:

But this situation happens when you enter wrong password for your BlackBerry ID , but not with device password that a user set in his device :
    KB24157 : BlackBerry ID lockout behaviour .
As you're an old user as you mentioned in your post , I think you will agree that BlackBerry are the most secure devices available , if we enter wrong password to many times ( By default 10 times ) then it will initiate a wipe process , which you cannot stop my any mean.
Sorry to say but there is no way or any workaround available to stop a device wipe after it is initiated .
Reading your backup issue , have you ever done a full backup or a custom backup which atleast include your address book ! If you have it then after a wipe you can restore it from those backup files.

  • Used torch 9800 or bold 9700/9780

So I can get a torch 9800 for $115 (It's used but mint condition). Or I can get a 9780 (its hard to find one for around 100 - 120 (used). Or I can get a 9700 for ($80)
I don't really use games, or apps which is why I'm getting a blackberry not an iPhone. I heard the torch has worse voice quality and stuff... And I kind of want to get a 9360 curve since I can get OS 7, but will not being able to get new OS affect me with the torch or bolds?
I also hear the keyboard isn't as good on the torch?

Of the choices offered, I would go with the Curve 9360 for the simple reason that it has OS 7.  As for the voice quality, I've yet to encounter a BlackBerry model with poor voice quality.  As for the keyboard, I only have experience with Bold and Torch keyboards (not the Curve) and both are very good.  The best physical keyboard, and many will agree with me, is on the Bold 9900 with OS 7 but that is not one of your choices.
Keep in mind that whether you get an OS 6 phone or an OS 7 phone, BB10 phones are just around the corner and they promise to be quite spectacular so you might not require the most up to date OS at this point.
    I hope that helps you.

  • How do I re-install the operating system on my BlackBerry Torch 9800 - I am sure it is hacked.

    Greetings,
Can someone point me to instructions on how to re-install the operating system on a BlackBerry Torch 9800 and then upgrade it to the latest release?
I have done this several times in the past, due to recurring hacking, but have lost the instructions.
Thank you very much for your help.
    Regards,
    Jean-Pierre
P.S. I would preffer a releas of the OS without any pre-install applicaitons such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn,
and above all, Whastapp. Thank you.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):
    1) Make sure you have a current and complete backup of your BB...you can find complete instructions via the link in my auto-sig below.
    2) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
    3) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
    http://us.blackberry.com/software/desktop.html
    4) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:

It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
    5) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
6a) For changing your installed BB OS level (upgrade or downgrade), you can launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC.
6b) Or, for reloading your currently installed BB OS level as well as for changing it, bypass the Desktop Software and use LOADER.EXE directly, by proceeding to step 2 in this process:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC.
If, during the processes of 6a or 6b, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:
