Totally deleting an Oracle Database

Hi
I have an Oracle 9i (9.2.0.1.0) database engine installed at my desktop for tests. Amongst those tests, I created several databases that I now want to fully delete since I do not need them anymore. What is the best way to do it?
Thanks in advance
André

The DBCA (DataBase Creation Assitant) has an option to entirely drop a database. It will (or should) also delete any Windows services associated with it.

  • Fast delete in Oracle database

    Hi experts,
Is there any way to fast delete records in the table with the condition? We can do the truncate statement this is the fastest way to remove all records in table, but for my case is need to keep records with do not match with conditions. There are over 40 million records in this table.
    My database version is 10g.
    Thanks in advance.

About 17 million records should be still in the table after the delete completes.one possible alternative to move the rows that should remain into a new table.
Then do a couple of quick table RENAME so that remaining rows end up in old table name.
Lastly TRUNCATE & DROP table with all 40 million rows.
or just bite the bullet & DELETE the 23 million rows.

  • Installation error message for Oracle Database software for version 10g

Would someone be able to advise why I keep getting the following error message whilst installing Oracle trial Database software for version 10g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition? Link listed below : -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
    Error message "Cannot create directory"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp"
Below is the 12 steps that I go through, please advise what I'm doing wrong : -
    1. (Operations) default is Create a database
    2. (Database templetes) default is general purpose
    3. (Database Identification) projemp.local for Global database name & projemp for SID
    4. (Management options) default is "Configure the database with Enterprise manager, also the options button has been clicked for "Use database control for database management"
    5. (Database Credentials) the options button has been clicked for "Use the same password for all accounts" so I've set up a new password, was that correct?
    6. (Storage options) the options button is clicked for "File System - use the file system for database storage.
    7. (Database file locations) the options button is clicked for "Use database file locations for template" Is this option correct? Other options are Use common location for all database files or use Oracle-managed files?
    8. (Recovery configuration) the options button is clicked for "Specify flash recovery area
    9. (Database content) nothing has been selected, the only option is "Sample schemas" should that be clicked?
    10. (Initialization parameters) the options button is clicked for "Typical- allocate memory as a % of the total physical memory
    11. (Database storage) no options available
    12. (Creation options) the options button has been selected for "Create Database"
    Click finish
I then get a screen stating General purpose, click OK then I get the following error message as stated at the start of this e-mail ""Cannot create directory"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp".

    >
I've gone through my courses instructions as listed above (1-12) and end up with the following error message"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp".What course?
    >
I've removed the software from my computer using control panel, programs & features then uninstall once but the other five times the software hasn't been listed. Whilst the Oracle was on my task bar I was able to install using Start > Programs > Oracle - HOME-NAME > Database Administration > Database Configuration Assistant. No you didn't. Database Configuration Assistant does not remove software. It can remove a database. As I mentioned before, there is a difference between the software and the objects that software manages. Deleting an Excel spreadsheet is not the same as deleting Microsoft Office. Deleting an Oracle database with Database configuration assistant is not the same as removing the Oracle software.
    >
Now that oracle is not on my task bar I've unzipped the link below, clicked on db, Disk1, setup, changed the Database password (is that correct?) install and I get the following error message "Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed<<<<<
Problem: The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.
    Recommendation: Oracle supports installations on systems with DHCP-assigned IP addresses;
However, before you can do this, you must configure the Microsoft LoopBack Adaptor to be the primary network adapter on the system. See the installation Guide for more details on installing the software on systems configured with DHCP."
So what did you do with the above error message? Did you follow up on what it said? Did you read the very fine Installation Guide that comes with the software? Did you read the section on networking considerations where it discussed DHCP assigned addresses and installing the loopback adapter?
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
Ok, that link takes us to the download page, which does not shed any light at all on your problems
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit operating system, and my computer is saying I have 142 GB free space.
If you read the installation manual that came with the downloaded software, you'd have seen in the prerequisites that Home editions of Windows are NOT listed as supported platforms, whereas Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions specifically ARE listed as supportd.
    Hope this is some help.And
I'm not to clever on computers so would you be able to advise how I get to the command window to issue the SET command please?
Also I've no idea what OS user I am, I'm taking an on-line Oracle course and been advised to install "Oracle Database software for version 10g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition"
How do I find out if I'm part of an Administrator, ORA_DBA group ?
Can you walk me through how to create the directory from command line please?Ok, given the above statements from you, I'm not even sure where to begin. I don't want to be cruel, but this self-admitted lack of even the most rudimentary knowledge by someone attempting to learn about Oracle is truly astounding. What course are you taking? Why are you taking this course?

  • Delete old records in oracle database using jobs

    Hi,
will it be possible to delete old records in oracle database using jobs
need to delete old records on weekly basis and rebuild my index.
    Thanks!

933633, While it is possible to do a great deal with the dbms_scheduler your shop should have a scheduler like CA Unicenter that is used to run the application job schedules. Purge jobs should probably be part of the normal application schedule rather than contained in the database, if your shop has a scheduler in use.
As far as rebuilding the indexes after the purge keep in mind that freshly rebuilt indexes often have to split when inserts are performed due to the fact the compacted index blocks do not have room to hold the newly inserted keys in the appropriate locations. So just because you purge weekly does not automatically mean the indexes should be rebuilt weekly. You need to look at the index key DML pattern and at the total percentage of the index that is held by deleted rows.

  • How to setup oracle database to archivelog mode and auto delete ?

    Oracle 11g R2
    - How to setup database to archive log mode and have oracle only save 24 hours of archive logs
and delete the rest. So at any given time I will have only 24 hours of archive log and not more.
So only 1 day of archive logs.
    - Let me know the database parameters I need to setup to accomplish this.
    - I don't want to use the RMAN
    - I am not setting up the database to archive log mode for recovery purpose. I am setting up archive log mode
so we can use the log miner tool to dig up achives to see log activity for any performance & tuning.

    Thanks everyone for there responses.
I need to rephrase and explain everyone as what I wanted to do exactly. This might help everyone understand and suggest me.
We have oracle database 11g r2. Its a test database. Nothing is critical. We use EXPDP utility to backup the entire database every night. Which is enough for us to recover incase something happens. Even if we loose some data. That's fine.
We are testing our web application on this oracle test database for performance & tuning.
One thing we have noticed is that the redo logs are switching very frequently. 50MB each log file and there are 5 logs. each log switches every 40 seconds. So we wanted to see what is getting written in this redo logs. We wanted to use the LOG MINER tool in OEM to read the logs. It needed our database to be setup in archive log mode. So the log miner can read the archive logs and show us the sql's within the archive logs.
Now when we setup the archive log mode on our database. By default the archive logs destination was set to flash recovery area ( may be oracle default archive log location is flash recovery area folder).
We have setup the db_recovery_file_dest_size to 100GB. Now within 2 days we have filled up the flash recovery area folder. Database was frozen. Then we realized that its because oracle couldn't write archive logs. Because it reached the 100GB. Then we physically deleted files in the flash recovery area folder. Thinking it would help us start the frozen oracle database. But it didn't . The we realized that we are doing something wrong. As Oracle does not know that at OS level we deleted the files. Then temporarily we changed the db_recovery_file_dest_size to 130GB and were able to start the oracle database. Later we turned OFF the archive log mode.
Being a rookie DBA we would have not read something properly.
    Finally:
We wanted to know how to always keep only 1 day of archive logs (only for our performance tuning ) and not more than that. All we need this 1 day of archive logs is to use the log miner to read them. Backup is NOT our priority here. Only be able to read the archive logs from LOG MINER is PRIORITY.
Correct me if I am wrong.Okay, so its making much more sense now, thanks for explaining your requirement.
Database won't honor anything that you would do over the o/s without telling it. Your deletion of the archive log from the o/s location is NOT updated in the control file of the database and that's why, even when you had deleted the entire 100GB , from the db perspective, the space was still marked as used. This is the same which would happen even if you would increase the space from 100gb to whatever size as well. To delete the space, you would need to update the database's control file and that you can do from RMAN using its two commands , crosscheck backup following with deleted expired backup . The first command would find that which database backup files are NOT on the o/s which are shown in the control file and would mark all of them as expired. The second command would simply delete those expired files. This would update the control file and you would have your 100gb or whatever space, given back to you.
To keep the archive logs of just one day, set up that Retention Policy for RMAN to either number of copies using the Redundancy option(default and set to 1) or Recovery Window. I believe for you Redundancy would be a suitable choice but you can have a read and play around with it. Setting it up would mark the files as Obsoleted and finally, you can write a small RMAN script to delete those obsoleted files.
Now, what I don't understand is that why you want to keep on generating the archive logs just for the log miner? If you would have generated them once and figure out the reason for extensive redo generation(did you try increasing the redo log file size, 50mb seems to be smallish) , I don't think that there is any reason to keep on generating the archive logs still .
And last part, for your question asked about that whether we can use RMAN to put the db in the archive log and is it a backup tool, yes and yes.

  • Delete Oracle database software

    Hi people,
I´ve uninstalled a central instance, now I want to uninstall  the database software, but in the installation guide in chapter 6 (Additional information) It says the next:
The Oracle software is installed on all hosts where an SAP instance is running, for example, on a central instance host, database host, or dialog inst ance host. Do not delete t he Oracle database software, if another SAP inst ance is running on the same host.
But the uninstalled instance was in the oracle home --> oracleCH1102 and the other instance that is up and running is in another oracle home --> oraclePES102.  I have to follow the guide or can uninstall the oracle database software because in your oracle home there aren´t any instance up and running?
    More thanks

    hi,
make a backup for your oracle central directory before any detachment.
if your oracle version is 11g, you can no longer launch OUI to detach oracle home. please have a look on Note 1525025 - Oracle 11.2.0: Oracle Software Deinstallation.
    Cheers,
    Thanks,

it does not have. i guess a dependencies should not cause the problem because other jobs that does have dependencies can be deleted. it is only the oracle database job that can't be deleted. thanks.

  • Db-cascade-delete for other databases than Oracle?

I have two entity beans with a one to many relationship. The database designers have implemented a cascading delete between the two tables for the entity beans. How should the deployment descriptors be written for this to work properly? From what I understand I will need to use the <cascade-delete /> tag in ejb-jar.xml and <db-cascade-delete /> in weblogic-cmp-jar.xml. However this document http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/ejb/entity.html states that <db-cascade-delete /> only works for Oracle, and I'm using DB2. Does this mean that I have to remove the cascading delete in the database and only enable it in ejb-jar.xml, or will <db-cascade-delete /> work for other databases than Oracle?
    /Björn

To get the certified answer I'd ask a tech support rep. Unofficially, if DB2 supports cascade delete then I would expect that the EJB container will work with that. There are issues surrounding certification of features against specific databases and I'm not up on all of these so I'd check with support.

  • Delete oracle database

how to delete oracle database from OEM?
    regards
    wire

You can't delete the database from OEM.
You can do it either manually or using DBCA (database configuration assistant) utility supplied by oracle.
I believe 10g has drop database command.

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying. My database instance named HRCS90 is going to be backed up. My backup directory is /backup_Database_Instance_HRCS90.

  • Backup Oracle Database whilst online

Guys looking for some help, I have an Oracle database that must run 24hours a day but I need to be able to back this database up daily, from what I understand I have to make the database run in archive log mode to be able to perform a hot backup.
I have found out that currently my database is in noarchive log mode
Can someone help me with the commands to put the database is achivelog mode
Then can you help me with the command to backup the database using RMAN I have read some documentation do I need to just issue the backup database command or do I need to backup the archive logs files as well ?

Do you want to teach me lesson ? I'm working with Oracle database since 1988, and I'm using RMAN since version 8.0 (15 years ago, or so).
And please read the link I posted above.
    1) ... At lease two redo logs destination is recommended so that one redolog destination is keep working while other is filled up or vice versa.
And you think I don't know that ? And that's not multiplexing.
    2) Catalog database is optional but it is recommended.
It's absolutely not needed, and I consider it just and overhead (another database to manage and to synchronize).
    3) You need to setup archivelog retention policy so that it cleans up from LOG destination after certain period of time.
You use DELETE INPUT option in your script, but it looks like you don't know what it means.
Please follow oracle documentation for best practice .
Again, are you teaching me lesson ? Oracle documentation is my bible.
Backup is very important for a DBA so you need to set up precisely so that you can recover the database during disaster
Backup is very important for a DBA ? What a news !! About disaster recovery, at your #1 you said "redo logs are very important to restore database" : or we mean something different for "disaster recovery", or you are totally wrong.

  • Newbie Trying to restore Oracle database. please help

    Hi All,
I am a newbie who is trying to restore Oracle database, I currently use RMAN to backup the database, but the database needs to be restored onto a test server, I'm not quite sure of what I need to do or where I need to start here.
    I currently backup the following
    SPfile
    ControlFile
    Datafile
    Archive Log
If someone can point me in the right direction or maybe a link to a website, I would be very grateful.
    Thanks.

  • Resetting the Oracle database

    Hi
I want to Reset oracle database enterprise edition 10.2 installed on my machine. It had a product installed previously on it. I have deleted the tablespaces along with their datafiles used by that product. Product had some users as well. Apart from dropping tablespaces what else should i do in order to make the database to resemble a fresh installation of oracle 10.2 on any system?

If that is true, the simplest way is to ignore the current database and create a new one from scratch using DBCA.
Note that this does NOT mean a reinstall - Oracle keps the software separate from the database, and yuo can have any number of databases running from one ORACLE_HOME. (ORACLE_HOME is the basis of the software install.)
Since you don't mention operating system, I will assume Windows. (Most people who use only Windows seem to assume that other OSs do not exist, or seem to believe that other OSs are just a copy of Windows, and therefore don't bother telling us any important details about the OS. ;-))
On Windows, to run DBCA for 10gR2, follow the instructions in the documentation at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14196/install003.htm
(On Linux or Unix, set your ORACLE_HOME by running oraenv for the current SID, then enter dbca and you will be able to follow the DBCA instruction in either the above manual or in the Linux/Unix counterpart.)
By the way, DBCA can also be used to wipe out the current DB, including reset the Windows registry so the defunct DB Service does not fire up. Only challenge is that older versions of DBCA did not clean up the disk space used for tablespaces.
