Trackpad sluggish until key pressed

This has been happening intermittently, but when it does, it is very consistent.
The effect is that after the macbook has been idle for a while (5 minutes or so, not having gone to sleep or anything like that, just idle) when I try to use the trackpad the pointer will only move, very slowly, a few pixels instead of what would normally be from one end of the screen to the other. As soon as I press any key, things go back to normal. Let it idle again, the same behavior reappears.
As I said, this does not happens after rebooting, but seems to happen all the time once it starts.
Any ideas?

Hello
Maybe it sounds stupid now but it is not easy to understand what happen exactly.
> Left to do it's own thing, the screen goes blank and nothing happens.
Does all this happen after recovery image installation and first start after successfully recovery installation? Or preinstalled OS is already configured and ready for first start?
>.. and the system begins to boot from the HDD
Can you see anything n the screen when this happen?
> it proceeds to boot successfully and the laptop works normally (bar the flat battery).
After reading this sentence I presume OS boots OK and you can use your notebook. Can you confirm this?
When you restart OS does the same happen again and again?
Have you tried to reinstall recovery image again?

  • How do you clear the buffer of excess key presses, in Java?

    Right now, in the game I am working on, if the user presses a key multiple times the actions will be performed as many times as it registers, even though I disallow key presses during the time that the action is taking place.
    For example, a move of 1 space can be carried out with a key press. While the character is moving, key presses are not allowed. However, if you just press the key 5 or 25 times, the character will just keep moving, once he's done with the first one.
    What I need to do is clear the buffer of key presses after an action has taken place, so that the excess keys are not registered. I know the commands to do so in C++, but not in Java.

    Well, I think you've got what I was saying backwards, or I'm not understanding what you are asking correctly.
    it is suppposed to return if isMoving is true, not false. If isMoving is true, it means that the moving animation, and actions are taking place, Which is a process that take about a second, for the player to move one space.
    Here's the code where I process the keypresses
    private void processKey(KeyEvent e) {
        if (isMoving) {return;}
        int keyCode = e.getKeyCode();
        if (!isPaused && !gameOver) {
            isMoving = true;
          if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_UP) {
            player.move(player.NE);
          else if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) {
            player.move(player.SW);
          else if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_LEFT) {
            player.move(player.NW);
          else if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_RIGHT) {
            player.move(player.SE);
            isMoving = false;
    }And in case I need to clear up what I want to happen, and the results I'm seeing. The player, in this case, moves one space in a direction, with a single press of an arrow key. That functionality is working fine, as intended. However, I don't want you to press the key twice quickly and move two spaces. I don't want you to hold down an arrow key and move continually.
    That part of the functionality is what is not working.
    As I understand my code, pressing the key once should set isMoving to true and, therefore further presses shouldn't register until isMoving is false again, which shouldn't happen until the player moves have finished.
    But, the way that it is working now is that if I press the key 2, 3 or 20 times, as soon as one move is finished another begins. Are the key presses just sitting in the buffer somewhere waiting for isMoving to become false again? And if so, is there a function I can call to clear that buffer after a move is finished?

  • "Enter Passcode" screen not showing the dots for key press

    I've a passcode that is 6 characters long. When I slide to unlock my phone , the "Enter Passcode" screen comes up as normal, but sometimes when I try to enter my passcode in the white box, though the key press turns blue under my finger tips as normal but nothing (no black dots) is entered into the white box. Whenever this happens I'm not able to unlock my phone with the passcode and I've to power off and power on the phone to detect the passcode.
    Not sure anyone else having the same problem as mine. If anyone encountered the same problem and know how to fix it, please help me.
    Thanks!

    I have two iPhone 4S both with iOs7 and simple passcode. One had the dots, the other didn't. I went through changing settings on the one without dots to match the settings to the one with dots one at a time until they came on.
    For me the exact change was turning on the Auto Brightness setting.
    Settings > Wallpapers and Brightness > Auto-Brightness
    Perhaps it's the same bug for complex passcodes? Worth a try.

  • Key press detection when application is running in the background

    Is it possible to detect any key presses when the application is in the background?

    The key-related, pointer-related, and paint() methods will only be called while the Canvas is actually visible on the output device. These methods will therefore only be called on this Canvas object only after a call to showNotify() and before a call to hideNotify(). After hideNotify() has been called, none of the key, pointer, and paint methods will be called until after a subsequent call to showNotify() has returned. A call to a run() method resulting from callSerially() may occur irrespective of calls to showNotify() and hideNotify().
    The showNotify() method is called prior to the Canvas actually being made visible on the display, and the hideNotify() method is called after the Canvas has been removed from the display. The visibility state of a Canvas (or any other Displayable object) may be queried through the use of the Displayable.isShown() method. The change in visibility state of a Canvas may be caused by the application management software moving MIDlets between foreground and background states, or by the system obscuring the Canvas with system screens. Thus, the calls to showNotify() and hideNotify() are not under the control of the MIDlet and may occur fairly frequently. Application developers are encouraged to perform expensive setup and teardown tasks outside the showNotify() and hideNotify() methods in order to make them as lightweight as possible.
    The above answer you might have found in the JAVADOC, if you would have gone through the description of the Canvas class.
    Don't forget your DUKES as I had to search the JAVADOC for giving you the exact answer, which you should have done that yourself only!!!

  • How to detect any key pressed for program running in the background?

    Hi All,
    is it possible to detect when any key is pressed if a java program is not in the focus? For example, when I have a console based program I can write something like:
    System.in.read();
    and wait until any key is pressed. However, if I move the mouse away from the console and make any other window active, the console program "doesn't hear" anything. Ok, it's clear, of course, but how is it possible to make the program detect any keys pressed even if it's running in the background?
    Thanks a lot for any hints!

    There are very few legitimate problem domains that would require what you are asking about. There are illegitimate ones though. And the legitimate ones would generally require someone with quite a bit of programming experience and would also be required (the fact that java can't do it would not get rid of the requirement.)

  • Simultaneous ASDW key press undetected

    Hi guys, I'm currently developing a game that uses ASDW buttons for its movement system
    During one of my testing session, i realized that if i press 2 buttons simultaneously, (ex: A and S), both events would be dispatched one after the other (just like what i assume they would do)
    But if i press 3 buttons simultaneously, (ex: A, S and D), the last keypress (D) will go undetected
    Only after i release one of the keys (either A or S) will the last keypress be detected
    From what i read here ==> http://blog.nobien.net/2008/05/12/more-than-two-simultaneous-key-presses-and-keyboardevent key_down-woes/
    It is said that the problem might had been caused by a hardware issue
    From what i read at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_%28computing%29
    [quote]
    Some low-quality keyboards suffer problems with rollover (that is, when multiple keys are pressed in  quick succession); some types of keyboard circuitry will register a  maximum number of keys at one time. This is undesirable for games (designed for multiple keypresses, e.g. casting a spell while holding  down keys to run) and undesirable for extremely fast typing (hitting new  keys before the fingers can release previous keys). A common side  effect of this shortcoming is called "phantom key blocking": on some  keyboards, pressing three keys simultaneously sometimes resulted in a  4th keypress being registered.
    Modern keyboards prevent this from happening by blocking the 3rd key  in certain key combinations, but while this prevents phantom input, it  also means that when two keys are depressed simultaneously, many of the  other keys on the keyboard will not respond until one of the two  depressed keys is lifted. With better keyboards designs, this seldom  happens in office programs, but it remains a problem in games even on  expensive keyboards, due to wildly different and/or configurable  key/command layouts in different games.
    [/quote]
    Question
    - What causes this problem is it a hardware issue or a language/flash player problem?
    Because i might be wrong, but i think i've played several non-flash games before that possess the ability to address multiple keypress at the same time
    - Can this problem be fixed?
    Code
    package
            import flash.display.Sprite;
            import flash.events.KeyboardEvent;
            public class Keyboard extends Sprite
                     public function Keyboard()
                            this.stage.addEventListener("keyDown", showKey);
                    public function showKey(event:KeyboardEvent)
                            trace(event.keyCode);
    Any help regarding the matter is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance~

    The problem comes from the way in which the signal for the pressed keys moves from your keyboard to your computer. The signal is only 8-bit, and there are limits to how the signal can be changed to represent more than one key being pressed in combination.
    Long story short, the guys who designed the origional keyboards made a descision to support all two key combinations, and then selected as many three key combinations as they could support with the hardware. This meant that some combinations had to be left out, and they had to make a descision about which ones were more important.
    It just happens to be that they chose not to support three key combinations which involve the up arrow key. I do not think there is any solution to this problem…
    If you're playing games, why not just remap the keys in the game's settings?

  • No long key press on bluetooth keyboard?

    I'm wondering if this is a limitation of the actual keyboard itself, iOS or even the app I'm using.  Where if you press a key on the keyboard and hold it, the iPad sends that key over and over until release.  Unlike the normal behavior of the key action 'OnDown' remaining active it simply resends the key.
    I am using the ZaggMate and Splashtop to remote into my computer a play a game.  For this game, in order to move, you need to use the arrow keys.  Since holding the key fires multiple 'OnDown' and 'OnUp' events, the movement is not fluid, more like stop, go/stop, go.
    Is there a way to work around this/where is this key press event actually getting mixed up?

    We had a couple 911 calls our first couple days with our uc540. What came up with was that our old phone system buttons had a different feel. With these cisco phones, if you press the button all the way down in a quick press, the nunbers never double for us. You can hold down forever and never get a duplicate. But if you press slowly or don't press the button all the way, I can get double numbers when pressing. I think that there's a point in the actuation that the button can float between on and off and that can give you double numbers (I think in the gaming community that this is called "spamming" the button). Our old system took less pressure to press the button all the way down and as soon as we told everyone to press harder we haven't had a accidental 911.
    If you push a button half way down and shake it left to right you can see a good example of how to spam the button. Yeah, that isn't how a person dials, but the first few days we got double-numbers just with people making calls. We have a few spa and a few 7900 series and we had issues on both but more on the spa phones.
    One specific person had the most trouble and this person doesn't have the most stable hands... She wasn't calling 911, but she just couldn't dial the right number because they'd get an unintentional double digit in the middle of their dialing. She really has to press every number deliberately to make calls--I wish I had a better solution for her because it makes here feel dumb.

  • ActiveX is stealing my key presses?

    Hi all,
    I have a fairly simple front panel with a handful of LabVIEW controls and an ActiveX container. In the ActiveX container is the Adobe Reader plugin.
    My vi works, but exhibits an odd behaviour that I presume is focus related. Once the ActiveX control is programmatically told to open and display a pdf file, it seems to steal the focus - permanently. If I select my LV string control, I can select any text in it, but key presses are all still sent to the Adobe Reader ActiveX control. If I click a few check boxes, then the string control again, it still doesn't accept my keyboard presses. The only way I've found to stop all this is to press tab, as this causes LabVIEW to move the focus away to the next control in the tab sequence. After that, all is ok until the next pdf file is read into the ActiveX control, and then I'm back at square one.
    Now I don't want to be telling my customers, "that's alright mate, just make sure you press the tab key after every pdf you generate and you'll be just fine."
    I've tried programmatically moving the focus away from the ActiveX control, and setting "SkipTabbing" to true, but this doesn't work.
    Anyone know how I can prevent this darned ActiveX control from permanently stealing my focus?

    Unfortunately I don't have a good solution, but I can sympathize - I've had the same problem.
    Hi nathand, thanks for the sympathy
    I've tried a few things, including navigating away from and straight back to the tab panel which houses the control to attempt to change the control focus. I've even tried simulating the keyboard TAB key press, which actually works - but only once for some annoyingly unfathomable reason! A second call to the ActiveX AdobeReader control makes it the focus again, but this time permanently. I've even tried putting the ActiveX control into a subvi that's hosted within a subpanel - no difference.
    Ultimately, like yourself, I've had to settle for a separate window, which I've called a Preview Window. Of course, putting my large ActiveX container in a separate subvi has left a dirty big empty space on my main vi front panel
    I'm tempted to try to hide all borders around the preview window, and programmatically control its location such that it sits perfectly over the empty space within my main front panel. Of course, this means monitoring main panel window resizes and movements to maintain the correct relative locations, but it's do-able...
    I've got a new problem now - I thought about using Invoke to Get the Front Panel Image, then place this into a picture control. However, it seems the AdobeReaderActiveX control evades the LabVIEW Front Panel Image method, revealing nothing but the blank front panel colour behind the container. I can't seem to find a way around this either!

  • Last key pressed repeats infinitely

    Sometimes while I am typing, one of the keys I type starts repeating itself infinitely (even though I am not pressing the key down). This can happen in any application and with any key. It also sometimes happens when I use hotkeys. For example, when I use Command-b to bold highlighted text, occasionally the command repeats infinitely and the highlighted text blinks bold-regular-bold-regular-etc. The repetition does not stop until I press another key on the keyboard, and then I have to go back and delete all of the repeated letters which have appeared on the screen (or undo whatever havoc a repeated hotkey command has wrought). What is causing this problem and how can I fix it?
    Thanks!

    Check the keyboard settings in System Preference. Your keyboard may have dirt or crumbs stuck underneath the keyboard. A can of compressed air should blow it all out or run a vacuum hose across the keys to suck it out.
    If computer is still under warranty, contact Apple if the above does not resolve the issue.
    Out of warranty, Do-It-Yourself Laptop Repair will show & tell you how to clean your keyboard.

  • Increment once per key press

    I'm trying to find the 'proper' method to do this basic concept of incrementing a value (in this example) once per key press:
    Is there a more efficient (using less cpu and/or less code) way to do this?
    I am also curious why you can't add shift registers to the case structure.

    I think I get it.  Is this what you described (Pic Below)?
    I first thought the loop would be running continuously, but after putting on an indicator I see it does nothing until the case inside is finished.
    Glad to see you figured it out.  Slight edits I recommend:
    1) Make a case in your event structure for the Stop:Value Change and put the stop terminal inside of that case.  You will then wire the value of the stop button (or a true constant) from that event case to the loop conditional terminal.  This will allow you to stop your loop immediately instead of being forced to wait for another event (or possibly 2) before actually stopping.
    2) I would use a shift register for the value.  This way other cases can affect/read the value without the use of a local variable.  Be sure to wire the value through all of the other cases.

  • Pm-suspend only after key press

    Hi!
    I'm running current Arch with 2.6.27 stock kernel on my Acer Aspire 5520 notebook. If I do "pm-suspend" the screen gets black and only the cursor is blinking at the top line. But the notbook only turns off if i press a key on the keyboard a few times (think about how long I tried to figure this out)!
    Also if I "poweroff" the normal poweroff sequence is shown on console until the last line states "Power down". It remains like this until I press a key on the keyboard. Then I can see a line stating "Power down" for a fraction of a second before power finally turns off.
    I think this is quite weird! Has someone experienced something similar? Or does someone even have a fix for it? Because it's quite annoying!

    PS: I'm not sure if it might help if I post a log file of some kind. If you know which one might help, please let me know!

    Hi,
    I have an Aspire 5520 too, running 2.6.28.1 and 2.6.29-rc3 and having the same issue: suspend to ram needs one or more keypress to power down.
    Adding "clocksource=jiffies" to the kernel parameter list resolves this issue, but who wants to use jiffies as clocksource.
    Tried tsc as clocksource too, but it seemingly doesn't work correctly with cpufreq (sleep 10 waits up to 20+ seconds when the CPU is running at 800MHz).

    Yikes, you've got that bit of code backward, there partner.
    You use Integer.parseInt to parse a String into an int, not the other way around.
    If you want to change an int to a String, do
    String s = String.valueOf(i)or you can use the various formatters out there.

    This is only supported with the "meta" keys (Control, Shift and Alt). Look at the KeyEvent for the methods to determine which meta key was pressed in combination with the other key.
