Trackpad woes. [Solved]

Hello,
After setting up my Xorg and installing the proprietary ATI drivers, I have come to realize my laptop trackpad does not function at all.  I have a USB mouse that when plugged in works fine, however for some reason or another the trackpad doesn't do anything, and I am at a loss as to why.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • USB Auto-mounting Woes [SOLVED]

    Hi,
    I've been trying to get my USB sticks to auto-mount and grant all users permission to mount/unmount them.
    To achieve that I initially added the following to my sudoers using visudo:
    %wheel ALL=NOPASSWD: /bin/mount
    %wheel ALL=NOPASSWD: /bin/umount
    That however didn't solve my inability to (un)mount drives in PCMan FM.. so I headed towards the wiki. The wiki stated the following:
    You can easily automount and eject removable devices with the combination of pmount, udisks2 and spacefm. Note you have to run spacefm in daemon mode with spacefm -d & in your startup scripts, ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession, to get automounting.
    I wasn't too fussed about having to use spacefm and everything seemed to work just fine.. until I tried format a USB stick using gparted. Gparted fails because because seemingly half way through the formatting procedure the drive is mounted (my suspicion is that it's spacefm).
    mkdosfs: /dev/sdb1 contains a mounted file system.
    If i unmount and format manually using the CLI it works just fine.. but I quite like gparted
    I tried removing
    spacefm -d
    from my .xinitrc and that actually stops openbox from starting up. Uninstalling (and later re-installing when it didn't help) pmount didn't help either, spacefm just auto-mounts in a strange 'run' way..
    So now I'm stuck, anyone experienced similar issues with gparted and spacefm?

  • Trackpad woes

    I need some help. The trackpad on my Macbook isn't working properly. I can't drag and drop, and in order to highlight text I need to use the shift key to do so.

    I'm having the exact same problem!
    Dragging is extremely difficult on my trackpad.
    I've had this macbook for 3 years now (I don't know if that's any consolation).
    If anyone has any help or suggestions we'd greatly appreciate it!

  • More Wireless Woes [solved]

    There's a lot on these fora about wireless, but I haven't been able to figure this out.  So forgive me if someone else has solved this problem elsewhere, but I didn't recognize it when I saw it, I guess.
    I have a Broadcom BCM4306 wireless adapter.  I followed the instructions here, http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless , for the bcm43xx module, which I've added to /etc/rc.conf, and it shows up in lsmod.  Then, I set up rc.conf as follows:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth1="dhcp"
    eth0="dhcp"
    wlan_eth0="eth0 essid [networkid] key [likei'mgoingtotypeithere]"
    WLAN_INTERFACES=(eth0)
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0 eth1)
    The wireless adapter shows up as eth0 because the rc.conf module list runs before udev gets the wired NIC going, so wireless is always eth0.
    Unfortunately, nothing has worked yet.  Most of the time, iwconfig doesn't show an essid.  It usually picks up the wireless key, and sometimes shows the right essid if I give it the key first (by iwconfig eth0 key xxxxx then iwconfig eth0 essid xxxxxx).  Here is a typical iwconfig output:
    eth0 IEEE 802.11b/g ESSID:"" Nickname:"Broadcom 4306"
    Mode:Managed Frequency=2.437 GHz Access Point: Invalid
    Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
    RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Encryption key:xxxx-xxxx-xx Security mode:open
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    Doing iwconfig eth0 power on gives this error:
    Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2D) :
    GET failed on device eth0 ; Operation not supported.
    ifconfig shows eth0 having a valid MAC address (00:0D:0B:CF:EB:0F), which I guess is relevant.
    This is my first adventure in the land of Linux wireless.  Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks,
    John

    I'm using a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop with an internal Dell wlan mini pci card (Truemobile 1390) that uses the Broadcom 4311 chipset.  I've tried to get this card working in half a dozen different Linux distros with the native Linux driver bcm43xx that's provided as a kernel module plus the firmware cutter software bcm43xx-fwcutter.  I've had no luck with this.  However, I've had good luck using a Windows driver running via ndiswrapper.  You may want to try that route.  For me it works well for 128-bit WEP encryption.  I haven't tried WPA encryption as yet; it may work for that too.
    Here's what you'd have to do.
    1. Connect your machine to WAN through the wired ethernet interface that almost certainly will be supported by Arch.
    2. Get the Windows driver for your wireless card, e.g. from the support CD that came with your card (it would be in the WinXP directory) or from the web if you don't have the CD.  To find it on the web, search  http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/medi … x.php/List  for BCM4306 or for the pciid of your card, or go to the card manufacturer's website.  The Windows driver consists of two files with extensions .inf and .sys.  Perhaps the widely available standard driver bcmwl5.inf & bcmwl5.sys that I use for the BCM4311 would be appropriate for your card.  Put the driver folder on your Desktop.
    3. Install ndiswrapper-1.26-1 and ndiswrapper-utils-1.26-1 by running
    # pacman -Sy ndiswrapper
    4. Bring down the wired ethernet interface eth0:
    # ifconfig eth0 down
    5. Navigate to the folder on your Desktop that holds the Windows driver files and run
    # ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf    (or whatever the name is of the .inf driver file)
    6. To check whether the driver has been installed (it should be in /etc/ndiswrapper/bcmwl5, some two dozen files)
    # ndiswrapper -l
    If all is well, this should say: "driver installed; hardware present"
    7. To insert the ndiswrapper kernel module run
    # modprobe ndiswrapper
    The LED for your card should come on.
    8. To check whether the kernel module is running run
    # lsmod | grep ndiswrapper
    9. To bring up the wireless interface wlan0 run
    # iwconfig wlan0 essid name_of_your_wireless_access_point channel number_of_your_channel
        key your_WEP_key_in_hexadecimal open
    10. To get an IP address via DHCP run
    # dhcpcd wlan0
    11. To set up a route to the internet gateway run
    # route add default gw 192.168.0.1    (substitute you gateway's IP address here)
    12. To check the connection run
    # ifconfig   (do you have an IP address?)
    # iwconfig   (does everything look all right?)
    # ping google.com   (can you connect to Google?)
    You should have a connection now.
    To make this setup permanent and initialize the wireless interface on bootup, edit the following two files.
    /etc/conf.d/wireless
    wlan_wlan0="wlan0 essid name_of_your_wireless_access_point channel number_of_your_channel
        key your_WEP_key_in_hexadecimal open"
    WLAN_INTERFACES=(wlan0)
    /etc/rc.conf
    MODULES=(ndiswrapper)
    HOSTNAME="your_hostname"
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo wlan0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"         (substitute you gateway's IP address here)
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    Then run # /etc/rc.d/network restart or reboot.  You should be all set.  If you use the wired interface too (which should be eth0), you can add that later.

    modem related. problem solved.

    Thank you, Chuckk48 and Mornsgrans, for your suggestions regarding using Windows XP.
    I tested how Linux Puppy Wary would work on my A21m and found that there were no apparent hardware conflicts.  My Thinkpad buttons worked, I could connect to the internet using my dial-up modem, and I could configure it to print documents to my HP laserjet printer.  However, I found that the Sea Monkey web browser was not useful for me.  I then tried Linux Mint 11 Katya LXDE (32-bit) to see if it could be viable for me using Firefox as a web browser.  This version of Linux wouldn’t load because of some conflict or potential corruption of something on my computer.  Overall, based upon what I have discovered about Linux during these forays, I have determined that Linux is not the solution to prolonging the useful life of my A21m.
    So, as time permits, I will explore other Windows solutions (like XP) and/or other uses for my A21m.  For the immediate future, I will try keep it going as long as I can with antivirus and firewall software products that can still be used with Windows 2K.(if they exist).

  • Wacom and trackpad woes in Lion

    A few wierd thing have happend since getting my new MBP running Lion.
    I have been using 2 fairly old Wacom Pen Tablets model CTE-630BT connected via Bluetooth both at work and at home.  With my old MBP running 10.6.8 I would boot up and the Wacoms would connect fine along with my BT keyboard and BT trackpad
    With Lion I freqently have to re-pair the Wacom to the MBP even though it apperas in the BT menu.  Instead of having a connect option in the menu it has "open mouse prefrences".
    So the issues are.
    1. Having to re-pair the Wacom each time I boot up
    2. When the Wacom is working the Trackpad has no Click function (even on the MBP the trackpad wont click when the Wacom is on)
    3. The computer always asks for permission to connect the trackpad via BT . is this correct?
    Sorry its a bit of a meesy post but any advice welcome. Thanks Phil

    Phil-
    Have you updated the Wacom software to the latest version?
    I would also delete the current Bluetooth Wacom setup in the Buetooth Preference Pane in System Preferences. If you need to update the Wacom software- do that. Restart and then re-create the Buetooth connection to your MPB.

  • Dvdauthor and NTSC widescreen woes [SOLVED]

    I've been trying like crazy for days to get dvdauthor to behave. What I'm doing is authoring a video that is 720x480 NTSC widescreen. It plays fine in Mplayer and FFplay, as well as will play in DVD players. The trouble is that dvdauthor isn't fitting the video to the screen; It's making it huge and cropping the ends. The relevant line in the XML file is this:
    <video format="ntsc" aspect="16:9" resolution="720x480" widescreen="nopanscan"> </video>
    dvdauthor is showing the correct information upon completion:
    INFO: Generating VTS with the following video attributes:
    INFO: MPEG version: mpeg2
    INFO: TV standard: ntsc
    INFO: Aspect ratio: 16:9
    INFO: Resolution: 720x480
    INFO: Audio ch 0 format: ac3/6ch, 48khz drc
    The nopanscan option is supposed to fit the video on screen, right?
    By the way, all of the DVD authoring tools that I've tried suffer from the same problem. Not to mention that they all suck for various reasons (particularly devede) and I'd rather do it myself from the command line. Any ideas?
    Last edited by skottish (2008-07-28 23:46:03)

    Nevermind. It turns out the dvdauthor didn't like the video. When I stripped the secondary audio track from the file with FFmpeg, I used this command:
    ffmpeg -map 0:0 -map 0:2 -i fountain.mpg -vcodec copy -acodec copy -g 12 -target dvd -aspect 16:9 THE_FOUNTAIN_01_01.vob
    This doesn't creat a NTSC compliant file. This one works though. Notice that target changed to '-ntsc-dvd':
    ffmpeg -map 0:0 -map 0:2 -i fountain.mpg -vcodec copy -acodec copy -g 12 -target ntsc-dvd -aspect 16:9 THE_FOUNTAIN_01_01.vob
    Groovy.

  • My trackpad does not work properly

    The trackpad on my macbook pro is not working properly.  Sometimes it right clicks by itself or if won't move around properly.  How can I fix this?

    Check the Apple support page in this link:

    Sometimes a through cleaning of the trackpad will solve those issues.

  • U400 Touchpad Updates

    Note: Please go down to dngnuyen's reply for a link to the latest driver. The one currently on Lenovo's driver site for the U400 is outdated. I have not marked this as a solution yet, as I have yet to test it thoroughly and still believe that it can improve.
    This is more of an inquiry than a troubleshooting issue.
    I must say that the touchpad performs terribly even with the latest update, which is a real shame because it's a beautiful machine otherwise. I have installed the latest drivers and tweaked with the settings as much as possible, still it underperforms.
    Issues:
    -The palm sensitivity is very pronounced. If you reduce the touch sensitivity to help this problem then you create a new one through a lack of sensitivity when using it to navigate the cursor.
    -Gestures are inconsistent. Scrolling and zooming is painful. I'm not trying to compare these to Macbook gestures but they are very hard to use properly and consistency.
    As for the other gimmicks, three and four finger swipes, these are not a big deal, however, it would be nice to be able to customize this huge touchpad with some more features.
    So what I would really like to know is if owners of this model can expect further updates/improvements to this hardware?
    If not I will be returning it since I paid a slight premium for these features and I can get more out of smaller and more consistent trackpads.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    dnguyen...you are the man.  I dont know how we missed that.  This new driver works a lot better.  I think the main difference is you can turn the sensitivity down and still make contact without having to jam your finger down on the pad.  This in turn allows for way better palm sensitivity avoidance.  Now for to them to allow a setting for two finger scrolling speed and I will be 100% happy.  Also does anyone know of any apps that allow for two finger right clicking like what you can do for a Mac?  I know there is the program two-finger-scroll but that is only for synaptic trackpads

  • [SOLVED]MacBook Air (3,2) keyboard and trackpad stop responding int...

    Hey guys, I've now got arch running on my air perfectly I think, except for a random loss of trackpad and keyboard input. It happens even with a usb keyboard. I'm not sure if the whole laptop is freezing or only the inputs stop functioning, I believe it is the latter because things that blink or move onscreen like the cursor keep blinking. It happens both in X and out. I have no idea where to start for diagnosing.
    My current kernel line is this:
    options "ro root=LABEL=arch arch noapic irqpoll acpi=force noefi"
    I'm using nouveau but it also happens using fbdev. I can't get nvidia to work, it just blacks out the screen when starting X.
    Any hints are welcome
    EDIT: It just happened again, this time just after I clicked on a tab in firefox. I hit refresh, so the spinning circle came up on the tab, and the windows partially reloaded, then the mouse pointer stopped responding. The loading circle then stayed spinning indefinitely with the page failing to load any further.
    Further information:
    I removed noapic, irqpoll, arch (is that even a valid kernel option?) and noefi from the kernel line for this boot so that all that was left was acpi=force and it still booted happily. I'm not sure if I need any of those, I can't remember why I added them, probably to fix this keyboard issue. I'm booting through rEFInd so maybe I shouldn't have that noefi entry anyway.

    Solved, I removed all boot options and I'm guessing one of them was causing it.

    My macbook pro 13.3 inch i7 late 2011 edition has previously encountered unresponsive trackpad and keyboard. To solve that, I used to open the back cover and then close it. It has been working fine since that. Yesterday, same thing happened, this time I noticed that bluetooth icon is showing a cross sign across it and keyboard and trackpad were unesponsive. After some time , everything worked fine and bluetooth sign was back to normal. Then , suddenly it went back to the problem. I shut it down by holding the power button. When I booted it again, I could not login because keyboard and trackpad were not working. I attached a HP mouse it didnt work. I opened the back cover disconnected the battery and then connected it again, didnt worked. Since then , I have tried many things and nothing has solved the problem.

    @sanjampet
    As you suggested I reset the smc, in the first boot nothing worked. In the second boot, it all worked like a charm. I thought that my problem is resolved now. To test it, I shut it down properly. Next morning, I powered it on, all things i.e, keyboard, trackpad, bluetooth etc. worked and I thought that problem has been solved. When I was just going to visit apple forum to reply you,  the same problem reappeared. A sawtooth cross over bluetooth icon, keyboard not working, trackpad not working,no usb mouse working which worked well when it was fine. I reset smc so many times again and again but same problem continued. Isn't it a problem of the firmware?
    Next time when it will work, I will update its firmware.
    My macbook was bought in dec2011 so no warranty now.

  • Cursor arrow gone from solid black to having white lines go through it and trackpad is not working properly in mail and adobe acrobat - anyone know how this could have happened and how to solve it?

    Can anyone help me?  Concerned that I may have some kind of malware.  My cursor arrow and trackpad are behaving strangely,  The cursor used to be a solid black arrow but now seems to have horizontal white lines running through it.  The trackpad does not function normally either.  For example, when I use my trackpad to scroll up and down in mail  it sometimes works and sometimes does not.  In adobe acrobat it sometimes does not work.  In facebook, the cursor does not line up behind the menu keys as it should.
    Any one know how this might have happened and how I can stop it?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My cd drive suddenly couldn't insert disk after I've reject disk out. And my trackpad suddenly couldn't corner click. How am I able to solve this problem ?

    Hi.
    I need help. I've been using MacBook aluminum 13" for awhile and everything works perfectly. But just recently my disk couldn't be insert after I reject a DVD out. And my trackpad couldn't be coner click but the sensibility tap is all working?
    How could I solve this issue? And am I able to solve it myself or do I have to sent it to repair at Mac centre in singapore and how much would it cost?
    Regards,
    Jacob

    Try SMC reset, followed by NVRAM reset.
    Note there are two different procedures for SMC depending on whether or not you can remove the battery yourself.
    SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
