Trans avi file to mac

how to transfer an avi file to a mac

Hi Crystal.
If you've put divx on your mac, you MAY have the right codecs installed. However, just to be on the safe side, I'd install perian ( http://www.perian.org ) which covers most xvid / divx / ac3 codecs
So, once you have the codecs installed, play the movie in quicktime. If you can get this far, great.
Buy quicktime pro, which I still believe is a bargain for what you get. This will then enable you to EXPORT the movie as a quicktime movie, which you can use in imovie, etc for burning to dvd. You can also use quicktime for converting into mp4 / quicktime for ipods
This is the route I use.... exporting via quicktime isn't quick but it works.
Regards,
Paul
PS: Just tested this method using a windows media file. Worked fine (apart from the flip4mac codec announcing itself on the finished movie!)

  • Playing embedded AVI files on Mac

I know there are players and codecs out there to play avi files on a Mac. But those are all stand alone players (I believe...like VLC).
I have the updated version of quicktime and I believe all the codecs to play avi files, but I was wondering if there is anything else out there that will play avi files that are embedded in to a basic HTML page? When I load certain pages, all I get is the QUICKTIME "Q" with a question mark in the middle.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

to be able to see videos of all the formats you don't have to, but in order to export movies from one file type to the other I think you do. You can export them without getting the full version but it has a very large watermark on the videos saying "Made with Flip4Mac" or something like that.
but for normal usage as a way to watch movies with quicktime, no you don't have to upgrade.

  • Avi File question

I have some Avi video files that I am trying to put on a DVD to be played in player. I have been using FFMPEGX to convert the files to DV, then putting them into iDVD and burning a disk. The whole process, particularly the rendering in iDVD takes a LONG time for each file (about 1 hour of video); any have a suggestion for a quicker method?

The problem is, AVI is not a 'FILE' - it's a file wrapper that can contain content encoded with quite a number of possible CODECs (many Windows only) and not all AVI files are Mac usable. I assume you've already tried the AVI files you have in iDVD.
iDVD '08 MIGHT be more 'accepting' of your AVI files, but I wouldn't count on it.
I use VisualHub to convert my problem AVI files from a small camcorder that records to SD media.. but if you are happy with ffMPEGx keeping using it (both programs are related but I just like the VisualHub user interface better).

  • How can i export a 24bit avi file from photoshop for mac?

how can i export a 24bit avi file from photoshop for mac? i have a client that specificly needs the files to be avi and in 24bit what are the settings that i need to use to export the video using photoshop on a mac?

    Hello,
To make a 24-bit AVI file in Photoshop, go to File>Export>Render Video. Then, under File Options, choose AVI from the Quicktime Export drop-down menu. Click the Settings button. Click the Settings button in the AVI Settings window. Change Compression to None, and then choose "Millions of Colors" from the Depth drop-down under Compression.
The Millions of Colors option is for 24-bit video (8-bit R+G+B channels, 8x3=24). Millions of Colors+ is for 32-bit video (24-bit video plus an 8-bit alpha channel).

  • Error -36 when trying to copy AVI files from External Drive to Mac

    Hi
Hoping for some help with a problem I appreciate others have faced.
I bought a new video camera recently and have just tried to copy the AVI files from the first few videos to my mac but am getting the error code 36 that states the files cannot be read or written.
The format of the camera is MS-DOS (FAT 32) but when I tried changing it to MAC OS Extended it did something to the camera so the mac could then not recognise it when I tried to re-connect it via the USB port.
I've been able to copy the files onto my friends Windows laptop no problem so don't believe them to be corrupt.
Have also tried the dot_clean fix but this didn't work.
Could there be another reason for the error? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I hear 3rd Party, or HW Raid 0/1/5/10 are OK, but 6 months is the absolute most I got out of my many screaming RAID setups before they completely lost it!
Bummer. I'm not really doing this for speed though, just for total storage volume and constant, worry-free, no-brainer back-up. I guess RIAD in general is something I need to study up on. Would a simple mirror of one 500GB drive to another (back-up) - and do that twice - be a better, more reliable way to go?
I've used Tri-Backup3/4 for years for Backups, it's fast, automatic, reliable, works in the background if you wish...
Back-up software always seemed to have some kind of a hiccup to it, but I'll certainly look into Tri-Backup3/4. I used to Retrospect years ago, a rather fussy thing if I recall.
Now, on the Safe Mode boot - not a success BUT a different result!
I got the -36 again, but this time it was the external drive FILE that errored, not the OS-resident drive.
In other words, pre-Safe Mode the error said "...because some data in "ZillaHAL" could not be read or written." (ZillaHAL is my OS-X drive).
In Safe, it read, "...because some data in "WinXP Pro.vmem" could not be read or written."
"WinXP Pro.vmem" is the virtual machine file - which basically is a simple Mac volume (folder) containing all of the files to run my XP virtual machine.
Also, this time, a file* did manage to remain on the external drive whereas before, after the error, no file at all remained.
    * a generic icon appears, but it shows a size of 16+GBs. The actual file is 18.13GB - I did manage to shrink it down the other day (from it's previous 25GB).
Well, that's it for now. I'll be away for three days, so don't mind me if I cannot reply back for a spell.
    Thanks BD,

  • How do I export wmv and avi files from media encoder on a mac in CC2014

How do I export wmv and avi files from media encoder on a mac in CC2014?

    Nonsense.
Apple Compressor has been doing wmf exports for a decade. I have the Quicktime export components from Telestream and they appear as presets in Compressor. They should be available in Media Encoder or they should be importable. Adove apparently refuses to see them. Still trying to figure that out.

  • Mac to PC .avi file question

I'd like to transfer .avi files from my mac to my hard drive and put them on a PC but it doesnt seem to work. Assume its a conversiuon issue?

  • Mac OS error 824 with AVI File

Hello, all. So I've done a few searches on this subject, which should be near and dear to your hearts. It concerns a difficulty that I'm having with playing several AVI video files back on Quicktime, and since I plan to use iMovie to edit them, I need to rectify this asap.
Now as you can see from the message topic, I'm being told this is due to an "error 824," and I can't for the life of me find out online what this is. But I do know that my roommate, who also uses Mac, can play the same files on his computer using Quicktime, and I can also play them back on VLC on my computer as well, so I know it's not a hardware problem. I have also removed the XVid codecs from the library folder, and all that's done is ruined my ability to play back other AVI files that need it. (BTW, the files in question use the DVSD codec, as they were shot on a Panasonic camera.)
So does anyone know what's needed here? Let me know. Thanks!

It could be a problem in the new Quick Time (QT). My Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOVs but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and added time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVIs had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than MOV. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. I sure hope Apple is also aware.

How import AVI files to my I Mac for editing in Final Cut?

You first convert them to ProRes with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP, then import the ProRes files into FCP.  FCP doesn't work with the AVI container...footage must be Quicktime, and must be in a codec FCP works with.

AVI is a legacy file container originated by Microsoft back in 1992 and which has not been officially supported for more than a decade. Like the container, many of the codecs commonly used to create AVI content are also "legacy" compression formats most often supported on PC/Windows platforms. In fact, some codecs have never been transcoded for Mac use. Of those that have, many never made the transition to Mac OS X or the transition to Intel-based platforms. Those codecs that are still supported on the Mac can normally be found in the free Perian codec component package available as an online download. While some common AVI compression formats may be supported by the QT X Player app, QT 7 currently provides a more compatible AVI playback environment for most "legacy" compression formats. If the codec(s) used in your AVI files are not supported by the Perian package for QT use, you can try the VLC media player which may still support more esoteric compression formats. If  VLC does not support the files, the normal approach is to discover which specific audio and/or video codecs were used to create the file and perform an Internet search to see if a compatible Mac component is available for download.

  • Troubles playing certain AVI files on Intel Mac

I have an Archos 604 WiFi and previously an Archos AV500. On my old PPC machines, the AVI files created by the Archos played just fine in Quicktime. However, I recently upgraded to all Intel-based Macs and I can no longer play the files. Here's the info for one of the files I can't play:
    Type: AVI
    Duration: 47'00"
    Video: [MPG4], Resolution: 640x480
    Bitrate: 1516kb/s, 29FPS
    Audio: [ADPCM], 257kb/s, 32000Hz, Stereo
I have the latest Divx 6 and Flip4Mac codecs installed. The only thing I don't have is 3ivx which doesn't have an Intel version available currently.
When I attempted to play one of these files, the video seems OK, but the audio is nothing but a little static for the first few seconds and then nothing is audible.
I also have the latest MPlayer 2 and VLC and I'm not getting any better results with those players.
Any idea what codec for Quicktime I can try? I haven't tried Perian yet, but it's on my To-Do list for tonight. If there's nothing I can use until 3ivx 5.0 is released, is there an easy Windows application I can run in Parallels to reencode the audio to MP3 or AAC or something else that'll work with Qt/Divx/Flip4Mac?
    Thanks

After installing Perian, VLC all of the sudden started playing one of the files corrected while the remainder still had no sound. MPlayer2 worked better but still didn't play everything. Not sure why those 2 apps would work better after installing a QT plugin, though???

  • Playing AVI files on a Mac

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question. I have a bunch of AVI files that I want to play. They open in Quicktime which says necessary software is missing. Is there some plug in I need to view AVI in Quicktime, or are there other players I can download for the Mac to watch AVI files?

    Hi Norm!
Try VLC from <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/>. It's the Swiss army knife of video players and comes in both Mac and Windows flavors.
    Hope this helps! bill

Most info on AVI for Mac is for playback, and editing is a different ballgame. Still, this ARTICLE might be useful.
