Transactional Replication - SQL Server 2012
Newbie to Replication.
Configured transactional replication on a database and everything run's fine, but out of all the tables one of the table with couple of columns as VARCHAR(MAX) and with about 3 million records takes 80% of replication duration.
on bit of research and recommendations, I did configured the server with following
EXEC sp_configure 'max text repl size', -1 ;
but still the table take around 80% of the replication time.
Can someone point me to other areas / best practices / articles to improve Replication performance?

You need to determine why it is taking so long to replicate.
If it during snapshot application? If so use the initialize from backup option. Is it after the snapshot has been deployed?
Then you need to use tracer tokens to see if it is the log reader agent or the distribution agent. There is not a lot you can do with the log reader agent and it is not normally the bottleneck. It is likely with the distribution agent.
If so, I would first try to factor out the network. Replicate this table locally and see if you still have the same latency. if you don't it is the network and you need to try to minimize the network impact. Use a pull subscription and use a WAN accelerator.
These will have more impact than setting the network packet size.

SQL Server 2012 Transactional Replication with updateable subscriptioins
Hi All,
It is heard that Transactional Replication with Updateable Subscriptions
is
deprecated in SQL 2012 so it is not possible to configure through the wizards but
we can still configure it by using T-SQL Script. Would you please share that script if possible to configure the same in SQL Server 2012. Thank You.
Regards,
Kalyan

SQL Server Compact 3.5 Merge Replication With SQL Server 2012 - Causing IIS App Pool to Crash
Hi, I may be the only person in the world doing this but I wanted to give this information to anyone else who may follow this path in the future, and hopefully avoid a headache, or at least a paid support call to Microsoft.
My original scenario was we had a SQL Server 2008 Server using Merge Replication through and IIS (web server) to several Windows Mobile 6 devices. This has worked fairly well for a few years.
Recently we upgraded our SQL server to version 2012 SP 1. After moving the database over to the new server, and re-setting the merge replication stuff, we couldn't get merge replication to work on the Windows Mobile 6 handheld devices. The replication
would appear to start, and then we would get a message saying that the device could not get to the web site. The message on the handheld device was this:
"The IIS service is not available."
After doing some more research, we found that the start of the replication process was causing the Thread Pool that was running the SQLCESA35.dll to crash.
The SQLCESALOG.txt file had this information:
Date Time == SQLCESA Version ==> 3.5.8088.0
Date Time Hr=80004005 ERR:Couldn't find existing RSCB 1
After 2 days of trying to figure out the issue on our own, we gave in and called for paid Microsoft support. They eventually found a known issue where a cumulative update was able to fix the problem.
We installed the update on the IIS server and everything ran smoothly again.
FIX: Merge replication fails when you use SQL Server Compact to perform a merge replication that synchronizes changes with a publisher in SQL Server 2012

Seth O'NealHi sonealtx,
Glad to hear that the issue is resolved. Thanks for your sharing, other community members could benefit from your solution.

Unable to add replication feature in sql server 2012 web edition
Hi All,
We are using SQL Server 2012, Web edition and when it was installed replication is not an added feature so I tried to add this feature but getting below error.
Error: There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer.
Description: The version of SQL Server instance MSSQLSERVER does not match the version expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product version is 11.1.3000.0, and the expected SQL Server version is 11.0.2100.60
And also please let me know how to identify the default file location of the setup file 'setup.exe' for SQL Server 2012 (Webedition, 64bit) Grateful to your time and support.
I'm using "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache\KB2777772\QFE\setup.exe" to add replication feature, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thank You.
Regards,
Kalyan
----Learners Curiosity Never Ends----It looks like you are trying to add Replication Components, however, you are using the Cumulative update package 5 setup, which is wrong.
Note that you will not find the setup file for SQL Server on your file system, it will be on your installation media.
To install SQL Server Replication Components, locate your installation media and run Setup.exe. Select the add features to an existing instance option, select your instance, and add replication components.

SQL Server 2012 Web synchronization option for SQL Server Merge Replication
I have 2 servers for this:
1. WIndows Server 2008 with SQL SERVER 2012
2. Windows Web SErver 2008 With IIS 7 - and SQL Client Conectivity Tools installed
https://192.168.100.8/sqlreplication/replisapi.dll?diag i have the next results:
Class Initialization test:
Class Status
ErrorCode
replisapi.dll classes SUCCESS 0x0
CLSID_SQLReplErrors FAILED 0x80040154
replrec.dll classes FAILED 0x80040154
msxml6.dll classes SUCCESS 0x0
Where replrec.dll is supposed to be? On the WebServer or Database Server? And if the answer is on the Webserver, how can i install it?
Thank you,
biionutHi biionut,
Did you install SQL Server 2012 Replication Components on the IIS server? The steps to install replication components are covered in
How to: Install SQL Server Replication Components.
Also, is your IIS server running 64-bit Windows? If so you will need to allow 32-bit applications to run on the IIS server:
cscript %SystemDrive%\inetpub\AdminScripts\adsutil.vbs set w3svc/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

All I want to know is if Distributed Transaction Coordinator services of the application role are required by SQL Server 2012 for clustering and support of SharePoint 2013.
I have been planning and deploying my companies first Windows Server 2012/SQL Server 2012 Always On cluster and Always On Availability Groups Multi-Subnet cluster and instances for SharePoint 2013, and I will be brutally honest, the documentation on either
the MSDN and TechNet leave alot to be desired. Continually finding links in the documentation will take me from a Windows 2012 reference to a page talking about Windows Server 2008 or R2, The differences of which there are so many when it comes to configurations,
settings, roles, services when working with SQL Server 2012. I have been confused, frustrated, screaming mad, with all the misdirection in this documentation. The documentation takes me windows 2008 R2 which is different than 2012!
Tired and trying to pick myself up off the floor!
Greg
GmanIn general, DTC is not required for SQL 2012. But, since you are asking specifically about SharePoint, it would be better to ask in a SharePoint forum. They would be more likely to know those situations where FTC might be needed by SharePoint.

Transaction Log Truncate not working on Sql Server 2012 High Availability Groups
Hi Everyone
Firstly I have tried to search the forum for similar issues but can't seem to find any that match our situation.
We have a SQL Server 2012 High Availability Group with 2 Nodes
Node 1 = Primary
Node 2 = Secondary
Backup Schedule as follows
Full Database Backup @ 00:00
Transaction Log Backup every 30 minutes from 00:30:00 till 23:59:59.
These backups are run by Maintenance Jobs, but we have also tried doing direct backups in SSMS using Backup Database and Backup Log commands.
Before we configured the High Availability group the transaction log backups worked fine.
After we configured the High Availability group we performed a Full Backup and the T-Log schedule did the T-Log backup. The 1st T-log backup truncated the log (Used space Decreased) as expected.
However subsequent T-Log backups do not truncate the T-Log.
This happens both in our acceptance and Live environments. This also happens when running the backups as a Backup operator and sysadmin, this does not seem to be a permissions issue at all.
We have tried running the Backup on the Primary and Secondary Replica.
What about High Availability groups could stop Transaction Log Backups from not truncating the log?
Thanks
JamesHi Sean
Thank you for your reply, please see the output of the sys.databases query below, and some others which you may find usefull.

This KB article was issued as fix for known Issue as per below link.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2793634
Now I assume you are getting this error because downloaded file seems corrupt to me.Can you download again and copy it to local disk and start running from there.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=36215
Also make sure your installer is not corrupt. If you find it corrupt please download it from below link and install after that run the setup again

I ran SQL Server 2012 express setup as user with administrator privileges and still it's failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication".
Any and every ideas on how to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.Three weeks passed and I am yet to find a fix for the the failed installation of the database engine on sql server 2012 express installation. I have tried various work-around including uninstalling, deleting all the directory paths, and reinstallation. Still
not able to successfully install sql server 2012 express.
I will greatly appreciate any and every contribution towards resolving this issue. Thanks in advance.

I have an Script mostly that is generated by SSMS which works with-out issue on SQL Server 2008, but when I attempt to run it on a new fresh install of SQL Server 2012 I get an Msg 8631. Internal error: Server stack limit has been reached. Please look for
potentially deep nesting in your query, and try to simplify it.
The script itself doesn't seem to be all that deep or nested. The script is large 2600 lines and when I remove the bulk of the 2600 lines, it does run on SQL Server 2012. I'm just really baffled why something that SQL Server generated with very
few additions/changes AND that WORKS without issue in SQL Server 2008 R2 would suddenly be invalid in SQL Server 2012
I need to know why my script which is working great on our current SQL Server 2008 R2 servers suddenly fails and won't run on an new SQL Server 2012 server. This script is used to create 'bulk' Replications on a large number of DBs saving a tremendous
amount of our time doing it the manual way.
Below is an 'condensed' version of the script which fails. I have removed around 2550 lines of specific sp_addarticle statements which are mostly just copy and pasted from what SQL Management Studio 'scripted' for me went I when through the Replication
Wizard and told it to save to script.

I was running SQL Server 2012 in Win 7 64 bit OS. Some how I found SQLSERVER server is not running and I was not able to run the service. Then I tried to unisntall and install again. And I found that some of the SQL Server
features got failed, like: Reporting Services - Native, Database Engine Services, Data Quality Services, Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search and SQL Server Replication. I checked the Summary.txt
file from location C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log. It thsi logs referes to another log file location like:

Please advice. I searched many places and did not get actual solution that will resolve my case.
Nusrat AkhterHi Nusrat Akhter,
According to your description, when installing the first install failed, and it looks like the instance did not uninstall completely. To solve the issue I recommend you changed the instance name in re-installing SQL Server, and check if it can work fine.
There is a similar issue that the SQL engine will not start, and there is no method of uninstalling either it, or any of the components etc. You can review the following post.

Could not connect to SQL Server 2012 Remotely
Hello,
I have a situation as follows:
The Server
SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition installed on Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition
Active Directory is installed on the same server as well
Remote Access Role added and configured to connect VPN
DNS Role added
Windows Firewall is disabled
The Server is connected to the internet
SQL Server Service & SQL Browser both are running under domain accounts
SQL Server allows remote connections
The Router
The router that connects the server to the Internet is configured to:
Enable VPN Tunnels Protocols (PPTP, L2TP and IPSec)
Forwarding > Virtual Servers (all requests on TCP and UDP on all ports to the server local IP)
The Client
PC running Windows 7 SP1 with SQL Server 2012 Express
Joined AD on the server
Connected to the internet
VPN Connected to the Server
Can Remote Desktop the Server
Can ping the server host name
Can nslookup the server host name
The Problem
If Both the Server and the Client are connected in the same Local Area Network, Client can connect to the SQL Serve
Once the Client is placed in different location connected to the Interent, VPN connected as described above, I could not connect to the Server using:
Windows Authentication Domain Users or
SQL Server users
and the error message is:
Cannot connect to SERVER\SQLINSTANCE.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider:
SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

Hello Hilary,
I have been working on a small replication test.
On the Publisher, things went smooth and the Snapshot Agent was able to work and produce a snapshot written in a shared folder located on the Publisher
On the Subscriber, as I am testing from SQL Server Express, I had run the following command:
replmerg.exe -Publisher [SERVER\SQLInstance] -PublisherDB [dbRepl] -PublisherSecurityMode 0 -PublisherLogin rplMergeAgent -PublisherPassword p@ssw0rd -Publication [TEST Publication] -Distributor [SERVER\SQLInstance] -DistributorSecurityMode 0 -DistributorLogin
rplMergeAgent -DistributorPassword p@ssw0rd -Subscriber [SUBSCRIBER\SQLInstance] -SubscriberSecurityMode 0 -SubscriberLogin rplMergeAgent -SubscriberPassword p@ssw0rd -SubscriberDB [dbRepl] -SubscriptionType 1 -OutputVerboseLevel 2 -Output C:\TEMP\mergeagent.log
Where
SERVER
Publisher and Distributor
dbRepl
Database to replicate
Merge Agent
rplMergeAgent
Subscriber
SUBSCRIBER
dbRepl
Subscriber Database
Merge Agent
rplMergeAgent
Password
p@ssw0rd
rplMergeAgent
SQL Login defined in both Publisher and Subscriber with same password
Granted the following at Publisher:
Login to Publication Database (dbRepl)
Login to Distribution Database (distribution)
Member of PAL
Granted the following at Subscriber:
db_owner fixed database role in Subscription database (dbRepl)
I couldn't grant rplMergeAgent Read Permission on SnapshotFolder as it is only a SQL Login.
When I ran the above command line, I received the following error:
Message: The schema script 'Person_2.sch' could not be propagated to the subscriber.
I am pasting below the whole log file written by the above command:

SQL Server 2012 SP2 Cumulative Update 5
We are starting to take a look at Cumulative update 5 for SQL Server 2012 SP2. The Installation was going smooth until the very in, where it sat on trying to start MSSQLServer for several minutes and finally timed out. Why does Cumulative
patch 5 says it failed to start the service when the server is already running? Version number changed, and everthing looks ok, except for the error message in the log file.
Is this a valid installation or do I need to try again?
Thanks.
DJThanks for the reply. The ErrorLog is too large to post in 1 reply. Will post multiple times.
Version of the SQL Server shows 11.0.5582.0

Unable to install SQL Server 2012 Developer
I have a problem with installing SQL Server 2012 (no matter which edition I choose). Installation usually runs well, but near the end shows up an error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Setup
The following error has occurred:
Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes.
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&ProdVer=11.0.3128.0&EvtType=0xD15B4EB2%25400x4BDAF9BA%25401306%254026
BUTTONS:
OK
The help link points to not-existing article on MSDN page. After I click OK button, the installation reaches it's end and shows up another, which tells, that Database Engine Services, Reporting Services - Native, Data Quality Services, Full-Text and Semantic
Extractions for Search and SQL Server Replication failed to install.
After that I am able to start, for example SQL Management Studio, but cannot connect to database. Also services of SQL Server (Server, Server Agent, Full-text Filter, Reporting Services) are stopped and I am not able to start them manually (any try throws an
error: "The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details").
I tried complete reinstalling of SQL Server, cleaning registry entries, different editions of that software - none method helped. Also, I tried the .iso images of installation media on other computers - it worked well and installed without any errors. My OS
is Windows 8.1 x64.Hello,
Please uninstall SQL server completely from add remove program.Make sure you uninstall it completely
Now right click on Setup.exe file which is there in SQL Server installable and select run as administrator to start installation.
On page where you are asked to provide startup account for SQL Server service select NT Authority\System or Local System account.
This issue is basically after installation SQL Server is not able to bring online database services using account which you selected .Local system account will allow it to come online
After installation change startup account to domain account with least privilege
Hope this helps
