Good Morning,
I bought a new laptop and would like to get some opinions on the best way to copy my Itunes software/Library from my home PC to my laptop. One of my main questions are, should I down load the Itunes software to my lap top prior to trying to copy or moving the Itunes library or just copy the whole software file including the library all at one time. Thanks in advance for ya"lls suggestions.

The music and picture sync is one way - computer to iphone. the only exception is itunes purchases. the iphone is not a backup/storage device.
it has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy of your old computer to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases
Your synced pics will be deleted. They are reduced in resolution when synced to iphone. you can e-mail them to yourself, but they will never be of the original resolution again.
Also, if you sync contacts and calendars to a blank computer, then they will be erased as well. Another reason that backups are critical.
You can enter one uniques contact and calendar entry in the new computer. When you first sync you should get the option to merge the data.
After all of this make a backup and maintain it always.
If you do as Eric suggests you may lose everything. So be careful. If you just sync to the new computer, everything will be erased and replaced with content from the new computer.

Yes you can. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. These are two possible approaches that should work to move the existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.

As i remember it Apple's answer is not insane.
Music sync'd to an iPod using iTunes doesnt show up as files (they're 'invisible'). As I remember it is only files that you hand copy to the mounted hard disk that do show up.
If that's true then to see no music files after an iTunes sync is normal. Problem is the usual utilities wont allow you to transfer the 'invisible' music up onto your new PC.
1/ Make sure music is transferred in 'hard disk mode' and if it doesnt then show up then it isnt copied.
2/ Use one of the un-usual utilities which circumvent Apple's attempt to prevent copying of music from iPod to a computer. E.g. http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/

Hi,
Since my old laptop crashed, I have made its HD into an external drive till I can transfer contents.
However, I do not know how to go about iPhone syncing and saving info without losing data/information on my iPhone. As my iPhone also needs to be backed up!!
So where do I find the backup files for iTunes/iPhone on my old laptop (windows PC) hard drive?? So that I can transfer it to the new laptop (hopefully this should work??)

Easyesd way:
Copy the whole iTunes folder from your backup disk to the new Mac, replacing the existing iTunes folder in the folder "Music"
On your backup disk the folder should be in "Music" or, if that was a Windows machine, in "My Music"

There are a few things you could do, from networking the two computers, using an external hard drive or even using your iPod to make the move. Have a look at this User Tip: Migrating iTunes for Windows to a new PC
If you can network the computers there is also this one: Copying songs over a network to use with iTunes for Windows
To use your iPod on two computers without accidentally erasing it, change it to manual update on your old computer before connecting it to the new one. Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have loaded iTunes on your new computer and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync:

Another way to load iTunes on your new PC is to copy the songs directly from the iPod. There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

I click on the folder, because i do not have a "choose" button. Nothing happens, it just opens the file. Well, I would skip the Firewire since it isn't essential. Connect the backup drive to your new Retina when it arrives, but before you turn it on for the first time. When you then turn it on you will begin in the Setup Assistant where you will have an opportunity to restore your files from a backup drive or another computer. Select the appropriate option. You can then restore (migrate) your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Once that is completed when the computer restarts you will be all set up in your old Home folder.
Note that you will be transferring files over a USB connection. Depending upon how much data you are transferring this may take a very long time, so be patient. A USB drive's typical transfer rate is about 12 GBs/hour.

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista. The computer screen went totally blank, but the computer turns on and works. We just cannot see anything on the screen. On the old computer, I had Itunes, 2 Iphones 3G and Ipod classic and ipod nano-5th generation. We bought a new Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7. Is there any way for me to transfer my itunes files (music/apps/etc) from the old computer to the new computer even though I cannot see the screen on the old computer? Please help!! Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!

You should probably hook up a monitor to your old computer, borrow one if necessary. By default, whatever you do on your laptop should be duplicated on the monitor you plug in so you can see what you're doing.
