Transferring files from Mac to shared drive shows different sizes?

I'm currently using a router with DD-WRT to share out media files in my house.  However, it requires NTFS or EXT2/3 which is more difficult to format and will not recognize native formats beyond that.  The current external drive is NTFS.
The interesting thing is that many files that I've transferred below 4GB's appear fine when streaming them.  However, files that I've transferred above 4GB's seem to either get compressed or truncated in some way.
Anyone know what's going on?

Why does the flash drive need to be formatted NTFS?
If you have no valid reason for it to be formatted NTFS then reformating might be a simpier solution.

  • Trouble in transferring files from Mac to flash drive

I can transfer files from my flash drive to my Mac but am having trouble transferring files from the Mac to the flash drive.  I also tried to install the NTSF 3G software as recommended by some people. However, it did not work either. The flash drive could not be mounted after I installed the NTSF software so I ended up uninstalling it. Please help! Thanks.

  • Transferring Files from Mac G3 IDE Drive to 10.6GHz Mac Mini

In attempting to transfer about 3GB of old files from a G3 Tower running OS 8.5, I purchased a hard disk case with an external USB cable and internal 40 pin connector for the IDE drive. After removing the drive from the G3 and installing in the new case, it powers up and runs iin a seemingly normal way; however, my Mac mini, running OS 10.4.11 fails to mount it. When I open the System Profiler, it appears that the computer recognizes the drive; however, none of the utilities, including "Disk Utility" and "Migration Assistant," will mount or recognize the external IDE HD. Is the problem a missing driver or other OSX software, or am I simply trying to accomplish the impossible with this gambit? Thanks to anyone who can point me toward a solution.

Thanks. My typo: that was supposed to be "1.6GHz Mini." As suggested, I attempted to network (ethernet) the G3 to my PowerBook Pro laptop (OS 10.5.8)(see separate post), and the network recognizes the two computers, but I'm not able to establish a connection and thereby share files, What am I missing? Again, thanks!

Firefox 2 versions use the file bookmarks.html to store the bookmarks.

  • I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.

For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC

  • Needed some help transferring files from Mac to external hard drive

Hey guys, I just needed some urgent help.
My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified".
So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?
    Please help!
    Cheers
    Sam

The Windows drive is probably formatted NTFS which is not natively writable
by the Mac. It should be formatted as FAT32 to be usable on both.

  • Transferring Files from Mac HD to Bootcamp

How do I transfer large files, up to 30gb from my Mac HD to my windows portion on bootcamp?

It is slow read/write to/from the same hard drive but doable.
So you tried and failed or didn't even try?
Apple added ability to Boot Camp to read HFS from Windows.
Mac OS can write to a FAT formatted Windows.
I would have opted for NTFS, for Windows 7, and to use an external drive for sharing files.
There are better commercial products to read/write NTFS and HFS for both.

  • Transferring files from Mac OS 9.2.2 to external hardrive, then to new iMac

Please bear with my lack of computer vernacular, I have loads of graphics and photos on Zip disk storage. I want to buy a new computer, however I can not figure out if I should buy a external hard disk first, store all my zip files onto this external hard drive, will I be able to access this external hard drive with a new iMac? The serial ports I believe they are called, are not the same on my older Mac OS 9.2.2 as the newer Macs. I guess this is my question not to be redundant, how can I get all my files from my zip disks, so I can now save them on CD's or DVD's, from a newer version of Mac?

Then email me. I have plenty of resources for you in your own back yard.
The best solution will be for you to set up a LAN or local area network with ethernet. The best web page to date is this one:

  • Transferring files from mac to mac on snow leopard

I have a white macbook with snow leopard, i have purchased a new aluminum macbook with leopard. upgraded the new one to snow leopard and now want to transfer files (music, photos, settings, apps etc) from mac to mac.
I was using migrant assistant, after completion it it transferred a small portion of photos about 10%, and thats it. I was using an ethernet cable to connect them together. none of my settings or documents transferred either. Is this the only way to complete this transfer and if so, has anyone got any tips or had this problem?
Otherwise I'm looking at using a memory stick and doing it the long way.
    thanks

    greetings gary !
you could connect your Macs by firewire cable and start up the white MB in target disk mode. this will probably be the fastest way.
as for your music, suggest you drag & drop your entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) to the proper location on the alu Mac (replacing the iTunes folder in that location - which, i assume, is void of content at the moment). launch iTunes and you should find everything as you were used to on the white MB.
alternatively, if you have a suitably sized iPod, you could use that. click here for instructions.
for everything else, check this user tip about where important data is stored (one correction to this link:
ical data is stored in ~/library/calendars).

  • How to move files from mac to external drive

I need to free up storage on my macbook pro, I bought an external drive and have copied the files over.  Then in finder after transfer I moved the files to trash off of my MacBook.  However, when I check the storage it still shows the same amount of storage space taken up.  What are the steps after transferring files to external drive to clear storage on harddisk?

Slightly surprised this has been asked several times before - "More Like This" on the right.

  • How do I transfers files from an external hard drive to my to mac?

I recently had my seagate hard drive replaced as it was faulty. Before I gave it in to be replaced, I made sure I backed up all my files and what not to an external hard drive. Now I have my iMac back I need to transfer all my files back onto my new hard drive. The problem is I have no idea how to do it!! :(
If anyone out there can give a step by step guide as to how I can transfer it all it would be much appreciated!
    Cat :)

So before you had the drive replace you attached the Toshiba and had TM do a backup.
How are you looking at the TM backup on the Tosihba now? Are you using FInder ro th eTM interface. If you are using Finder try the TM interface.

  • Transfer files from Mac formatted external drive to PC formatted drive

i need to transfer quicktime files (that were captured from video with FCP) to a PC formatted external drive (for editing them in after effects on a PC). the files can be transfered by burning them on a DVD, but that will take a very long time and waste many DVDs because i have 60 GB of material... can this be done (without having to purchase expensive software)?

    thanx tom,
first of, i like that you made the link appear as one word. how did you do that? it's really cool!
i downloaded the program, but i'm not sure how to use it... reading the guide just made me more confused... if i understand correctly, it will automatically reformat ALL my files to NTFS-3G ones, which are not as stable... i'm a little scared to install it... though i may have totally misunderstood what it says. i see mostly black when i try to read these kind of things...
anyone out there have experience with this program?

  • Transfer files from mac to company drives via VPN?

I have several files that I design/update on my mac which I want to write to a company network drive.
On my PC I go through the installed VPN (I have host address, passwords etc). I am new to mac's and wondered if a similar method is available?
Any step by step instructions would be very much appreciated.
    Al
    iMac 2006   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

It depends on the VPN system being used by the office.
If it uses PPTP or L2TP, just open /Application/Utilities/Internet Connect and create a new VPN connection profile.
Fill in the blanks and click connect. With luck you'll be connected to the office network via VPN and can do whatever you would normally do while in the office.
If the office VPN uses IPSec as its VPN protocol, or doesn't work with the built-in client then you may need to install a separate VPN client. You should be able to get this from the network administrators, or you can try one of the third-party clients such as VPNTracker or DigiTunnel.

  • HT201250 Transferring files from a Seagate external drive

I have a seagate external backup drive (from my PC)
There are some files I want to transfer to my new IMac, before using this external drive as the normal back-up, with Time Machine.
But how do I first transfer over these data files?

Open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Select your external drive on the left then under the Erase tab select MS-DOS(FAT) as your volume format. Keep in mind that re-formatting your drive will erase all of the data so make sure you have it all backed up on your computer before you re-format.

Are you replacing your PC with the iMac or are you still going to use both computers?
