Traveling Abroad w/ Droid Incredible

I have heard conflicting accounts about using the HTC Incredible wifi while traveling overseas.
Some people say if you find a wifi hotspot, you can connect to the internet.  Keeping the phone in airplane mode (not making phone calls or using SMS).
Others say you will be charged for using wifi services regardless.
Any solid advice?
Thanks!

We went on a cruise in December and I did just what you wanted to do too.
Left the phone in airplane mode once we left Miami but on the islands that had free wifi, there's no charge by Verizon. Also used the GPS for geocaching and geotaging pictures too.

  • Android 2.2 Reverts to Default email settings when roaming - Droid Incredible

When traveling with my Droid Incredible and want to send an email the phone often will lose my SMTP settings. At the same time it reverts to default settings for send / receive which means it will delete messages from POP server! Is there a roaming setting somewhere on this?

In order to better troubleshoot, we need additional information. Can you please advise what E-mail provider you are using? Can you advise where and when this has happened most recently? If the issue persists, please contact us while you are in the area affected, as we would need to determine what network you are accessing at the time, along with additional information. You can feel free to call us from a secondary phone at 800/922-0204 or DM me with a secondary contact number (other than your wireless device) so that we can conduct additional troubleshooting.

  • Using Droid Incredible internationally

I know there are a lot of different posts regarding using the HTC Droid Incredible in international CDMA locations. I am travelling to Israel which is a CDMA country. I plan on using my phone for wifi and GPS only (i have cached google maps around the area that I will be staying).  I do NOT plan on making any phone calls whatsoever.  I have been told to put the phone in airplane mode and then enable wifi. But I have also seen on this board people who have said that even in airplane mode, some apps (news, weather, etc.) will sneak data via autosync updatingand you will be charged the roaming data rate. Again, this is even when the phone is in airplane mode.
I have seen posts where it says for added protection you should go to settings ---> accounts & sync; and then disable "background data" to prevent this. But someone said they were told that android based phones just ignore this setting and still sync data even when the box is unchecked and in airplane mode (???). And also someone posted that even if you select "Deny data roaming access" that it still ignores this selection and does data roaming anyways.
Is there any surefire way to make sure that data is sent and received ONLY when connected to wifi and at no other time??

    Hello ucsdjosh!
Israel sounds like a great place to visit!  I would like to assist you with options for restricting network data while traveling abroad.
There are a few settings you can change to avoid data roaming charges while in Israel.  First, I would disable Data and Data Roaming in the Settings menu.  You can also enable Airplane Mode in order to turn off any network voice and data connections, while still having access to connect via Wi-Fi.  This will ensure you do not incur any voice or data roaming charges while traveling abroad.
I trust I have answered your questions, and have addressed your concerns.  I hope you enjoy your trip to Israel as well.

  • Droid Incredible 4g lte global services not working in UK

Purchased global plan for travel in UK, got here, no service.  I contacted support and after nearly an hour with two different people, they've started a problem ticket.  I can get a list of network operators on GSM/  dual, but cannot connect.  I have tried GSM only as well.  It does not seem that I have the very latest software update, but when I check via WiFi for new updates, there aren't any.  Does anyone have any clues about how to get this thing to work?

The DROID Incredible 4G LTE should already be running either Android 4.0+ for its operations system. Which means you can disable many of the pre-installed applications. Go to settings > Apps > slide to the All view. Disable each application individually. You might have to uninstall any updates before the disable button is available.
The DROID Eris is only three years old. It was released in November 2009. 12 minus 9 equals 3.
Also you should be aware, you posted your message on the Verizon Wireless Community. This is a peer to peer forum where customers can give suggestions and advice to other customers with their questions and issues.
If you need immediate assistance call customer service at *611 from your phone or 1-800-922-0204 from another phone. You can also use the "Contact Us" link at the top of the website. However the response from that avenue might also be delayed due to the holidays.

  • Motorola Droid X or HTC Droid Incredible or Samsung Fascinate or Wait?

    Hey Guys,
Im currently an At&t customer and I absolutely hate my service. I went with it for the At&t Unity Family Plans and Rollover, but have since found it sucks. I currently use a Blackjack II. Anyways, my contract just ended and Im looking at buying a new phone soon. I am only considering Verizon due to the reputed network reliability.
At this point I have several options in front of me, and I want you guys opinions on what you think is a good phone for me? I generally consume a few GB of data per month, send 2500 texts or so, and talk a little as well. My primary uses are gaming, multimedia, texting, and web browsing. Size isn't an issue, however I do a LOT of multitasking.
Please tell me which of the following is the best phone for me in your opinion?
    Motorola Droid X
    HTC Droid Incredible
    Samsung Fascinate
In addition, after doing so, do you think its worth it to buy now? Or should I wait a few more months and get the rumoured LTE phones or iPhone thats coming to Verizon in late 2010/early 2011.

I want to point out it is not my intention to ruffle any feathers. I used to considered myself a loyal Verizon customer, but maybe after nine years with any carrier you have seen too much of the true nature of the way they conduct business. In Verizon's case it is my opinion in the last three years particularly they have gone over the line in terms of unfair restrictions and misleading terms and pricing. This has been born out in succesful lawsuits ( http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/ny_verizon.html )
( http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=10975100 ) there are more, but you get the idea.
Wicked One regarding Sprint and Verizon Upgrades, I am not sure about that but here is what I understand:
First Off ETF for Sprint is $200 for Verizon it's $350
"Verizon Wireless came under FCC scrutiny in early December after it doubled its ETF for netbooks, smartphones and some feature phones. No official action has been taken on the matter."

    RE: Phone Upgrades
As far as I know Verizon does not offer anything at one year, whereas Sprint does. The catch is what the new phone you are buying will cost you at one year into your two year contract. With Verizon my understanding is at 1 year into your 2 year contract, you pay a $20 upgrade fee and then you can get the new phone you want at a 1 year contract price. So if you were upgrading to a Droid Incredible today under these circumstances you would pay $20 + $269 ($369 - $100 rebate) or $280. With Sprint in the case of the EVO or any other plan where you pay more than $65 month you get the two year price after one year so you would be paying $200.
I wish I could say Verizon is the best, but I have found them to be more focused on pinching money out of our pockets, via weazle marketing gimicks, like "Unlimited" plans that are NOT unlimited, or convincing you that you get more when you actually get less or get a paragraph of restrictions in the small print. Verizon has the best coverage, but that does not balance out any more with me. Most of the time, except when I am traveling in rural areas, I think the other cariers will offer similiar service. I am very close to conducting a personal 30 day test.

  • Firefox constantly crashes on my htc droid incredible

i have an HTC Droid Incredible and have been using firefox for a while. all of a sudden, when i try to use firefox on my phone, it opens for a few seconds then the screen turns white then takes me to a page that says FireFox has crashed and allows me to restart or close the program. Regardless of closing or restarting, the it always crashes. I've unistalled and reinstalled FireFox to see if that would fix it but it doesn't. My other internet browser works fine. Does anyone have any advise on how to fix this?

    Have you rebooted the phone?

  • How to create unique notification sounds for email on Droid Incredible 4G LTE

I have three separate email accounts pushed to my Droid Incredible 4G LTE.  I can't for the life of me figure out how to set up unique notification sounds for each email account.  It was a snap to do on my old Blackberry.
Same question for flagging individuals within my contact list.  (E.g., if my wife calls it makes one sound, if a client calls it makes a different sound.)
Does anyone know how to do this, or, as they say, is there an app for that???
    Thanks in advance!

I don't think you can on the email but got to each contact and edit them for different sounds, I'm not sure if it works on that new phone that way but as they don't have a dedicated room yet for it you had nowhere else to ask htc has good forums also

  • How can I get music I purchased though Amazon on my Android device(droid incredible) to my IPad 2 without using a computer?

I just got an iPad 2 a couple months ago, and I'm very eager to get my music collection purchased from Amazon to my device. I have had to get a replacement droid incredible and lost my login information for both my email and my amazon account. I have the music files stored on the SD card on my phone. I have the basic iPad 2, 16 GB, wifi, no 3G. I got an iPad to essentially replace my computer since it can't hold a charge anymore. I am almost due for an update with Verizon, so I would like to get an IPhone. However if I can't transfer my 100s of dollars worth of music, I'll have to suck it up and stick with android and be unable to have more than the 3 songs I have on my iPad.
If any one can help It would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds as if you have a computer but it won't hold a charge. Does it not work if it's plugged in at home? If so, you can simply transfer the music to your computer at home. You can either do this by connecting your Incredible to the computer and dragging the music from the SD card to iTunes or, you can contact Amazon and get your password reset and just download the music.

  • How to properly update iTunes content while traveling abroad?

Spent some time searching and found a number of threads covering T&Cs and whys and wherefores of US Citizens on extended overseas travel trying to update or purchase iTunes content. There's a lot of 'why not' but not much 'how to'.
I'm seeking the Apple-approved solution for those of us with US based iTunes accounts who are traveling or deployed overseas or take extended temporary jobs abroad. How can we legally, properly, update our podcast subscriptions, apps for iPhones, or purchase content?
Do we have to simply change the country setting at the bottom of the iTunes Store window, so we are interacting with whatever the local Store is and the content will live happily in iTunes no matter which Store it was purchased from?
Do we have to set up a new account with local credit card in every land we are assigned?
There has to be a way, it seems illogical that you can't update podcasts or apps while traveling. There's got to be an Apple-approved method for this!
If anyone knows the answer or a link to the answer or something near to it, please provide the info. The T&C are clear enough in regards to "purchases" and using the US store only from in the US, but doesn't answer the 'how-to' for customers traveling abroad who are not spending any money by getting new podcast episodes or free app updates.
So again, no need to rehash the T&C, just seeking the 'proper' way to update things if away for a while. I'll be stupefied if I hear that the official Apple answer is the iPhone content is frozen in place until I get back in US territory.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply, Chris.
After posting the message, I changed my iTunes Store to India (where there may be work opportunities) and there were only Apps and iTunes U content tabs, and the T&C were similar-can only shop at the store where you are connecting from. So unless the store looks different when logging in while physically in India, there wouldn't be a way to update podcasts.
I am concerned about an important distinction, though, which is 'what will work' vs. 'what is T&C compliant'...

  • When I plug my Droid Incredible 2 into a car charger the phone is now permanently in"Car Mode" and won't get out. I heard that Droid will fix this, but it hasn't happened.  Does anyone know how to fix i

I have a Droid Incredible 2 phone.  I bought  car charger and ever since I have used it, the phone thinks it is in "car mode" even when the phone is in my home, my purse,...I sets to speaker and I can not hear the phone ring.  It freezes on "car mode".  I heard that Droid is supposed to be fixing the problem, but nothing has happened yet.  Is anyone else having this problem, and does anyone at Verizon know when/if this will be fixed.  If not, I expect a new phone from Verizon.

there are two ways, usually if u restart the phone it will reset, but the other is going to your system and shut it off manually...

  • I will be travelling abroad but use time machine and modem at home. Do I need to leave these switched on while away for iCloud to work?

I will be travelling abroad but use time machine and modem at home. Do I need to leave these switched on while away for iCloud to work?

No. iCloud has nothing to do with Time Machine on your computer, and as long as your computer has synched all desired content and settings to iCloud, not only does the modem not need to be switched on, your computer doesn't need to be on either.
    Regards.

  • Droid Incredible 2 won't turn on or charge.

I have had this problem before, right after I got the DINC2. Yesterday, I wanted to take out my memory card to save pictures on my computer via a usb card reader. I turned my phone off by pressing the power button and selecting power off. I removed my battery, and then removed the memory card. After transferring my pictures, I placed the memory card back in the DINC2, and placed the battery and cover back on the device. I pushed the power button, and NOTHING. The phone won't turn on. I plugged it in to the charger, and the amber light won't even come on. I thought it might be the charger, so I used the USB cord attached to the computer, and still no charging light. I have removed the battery overnight, and just let it set. When I reinstalled the battery this morning, still nothing. The charging light does not come on, and I can't power up the device.
I had this problem before. I had let the battery run down to nothing and the device powered itself off. Same scenario, the charge light would not come on when plugged into the charger, and I couldn't power up the device. I left the battery out overnight, and the next morning the device still wouldn't power on. I placed the phone in my car, and plugged in my car charger. After a few minutes, the amber light came on, and I was able to power up the device. This, however, did not work this time. Nothing I try helps.
Is this a common problem? How should I go about getting this resolved?
      Thanks,
      Brian

    Hi Brian,
It must be frustrating not being able to power your phone on. I checked my resources and this is not noted as a known issue with the Droid Incredible 2. Since you are not able to power on the phone, there is nothing we can troubleshoot by phone. I recommend to bring your device to a Verizon Wireless store for a hands on evaluation. You can find a Verizon Wireless store near you by entering your ZIP code at vzw.com/storelocator online.
