Trouble ejecting USB Thumbdrive

I'm having a issue ejecting a USB thumbdrive (Namely a SanDisk Cruzer... I'm not sure if other thumbdrives have the same problem or not.)
When I try to eject the drive, it says the drive is in use. I try a second time (right away, with out clicking anything else), and it works! All my programs are off, and nothing (AFAIK) is using it.
This used to never happen when I had Leopard installed. Then I downgraded to Tiger, and the issue started, and then I upgraded (a clean install, not exactly a update) and the issue is still there.
I have iBook G4, with 1.25 GB ram.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

You can learn what's "using" a file on your thumb drive with a command in the Terminal utility. Supposing your thumb drive volume name is "George", launch the Terminal utility, drag the Terminal window to be rather wide, and enter this command, followed by a "return":
sudo lsof | grep George
(Spaces doubled for readibility. That's a lower-case letter "L" in the second "word" of the command. That's a "shift-backslash" after "lsof". Case is critical.)
You'll be prompted for your administrative password. In the output the first "word" on a line (ignoring line wrapping) will be the name of the process that has the file open. The last thing on the line will be the file that's open.

  • USB Thumbdrive causes "Mass Storage Device Not Responding"...

Everytime I connect a thumbdrive to my MBP, I cannot eject it. I always get the "disk in use" message.
When I go into Activity Monitor, I see "Mass Storage Device Not Responding" and it's eating up a lot of system resources.
After a short period of time, the fan will come on full blast, and stay on until I force the program to quit.
The only way I can eject the thumbdrive is to force quit through Activity Monitor.
I've tried multiple thumbdrives on every USB port and I get the same result.

  • How to boot from Windows 7 installer USB-thumbdrive?

I have created a Windows 7 installer USB-thumbdrive from .ISO image using Boot Camp Assistant.
What I can't figure out how to make my Mac Mini boot from USB to start the Windows 7 installer. The USB-thumbdrive does not show up in the boot menu when pressing ALT during startup (I'm using generic PC keyboard) nor is it available for selection in System Settings --> System --> Startup Disk.
My computer is early 2009 Mac Mini, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.4.

    Anyone?
Additional question: is a 2009 Mac Mini able to boot from USB to begin with?
The situation has become particular annoying, because my Mac Mini's optical drive appears to be damaged and therefor I'm not able to boot from any kind of Windows install DVD.

    depending on OS version -
I haven't been running vold on the Solaris 10 machines I'm playing with - and on them, I simply plug in the memory stick into either the onboard USB 1.1 connection, or into my Adaptec USB 2.0 interface
once connected, you should be able to "rmformat -l" to see the devices have changed -
from my own experience, I've only been able to see/use fat32 formatted drives with the mount -F pcfs (mountable rw or ro) commands, and ntfs formatted drives with mount_ntfs (mountable ro, downloadable from web), but you can still mount the drive on your sparc/x86 machine and put ufs/zfs/vxfs on it - and since it's removable format media, you will only really be able to use the "whole" drive versus laying down your own vtoc on the disk (unless somebody knows how to get around that one) - regards - jeff

  • 10.5.6 update...can't see iPod or usb thumbdrives

I recently upgraded my desktop and laptop to Leopard (from a DVD install disc). After the upgrade, software update on the iMac showed several update for the OS. I allowed software update to install them. BIG MISTAKE. Now my iMac no longer allows me to sync my iPod. It is as if I am not even connecting it. Nothing, nada no response at all. My usb thumbdrive (PNY Attache), which worked fine prior to software update, upon plugging it in flashes several times and then simple goes dead. It seems to make no difference which usb port the iPod or usb drive are plugged into. They both work fine on the iBook which is 10.5 but has not had the software update run on it yet! (like I really would run it on this after the problems on the iMac!)
I wonder if software update does a combo update or regular update. I have download both from apple's website but wanted to see what other though before trying to run the combo update.

    Hello, heatsiphonman,
I am having the exact same issue with my 5G iPod. I tried a clean restart (with no memory of open windows), and all the other suggestions via the support website and it's still a no-go. Not sure where to go from here. It seems like it may be a Lion issue or a combination of Lion and iTunes 10.5. I may take it in to an Apple store and see if I can get it to sync there. Meanwhile, I'll keep a close eye on this topic to see if anyone else might be having this issue.
    Mike.

  • Re-install from USB thumbdrive (purchased - no app store)

Does anyone know how to re-intall lion after i've formated my harddrive in Disk Utility IF i purchased my OSX at the apple store via a USB thumbdrive and not over the app store? I can't get passed that point.

    Hi ..
Yes, installing the OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo) will reinstall the App Store for you.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed.
If that didn't help, some third party apps like Little Snitch can prevent the Sign In window from appearing >  Mac App Store: Sign in sheet does not appear, or does not accept typed text

  • IPod Shuffle 4G no Sync-Problem: Ejects USB device

    Hello,
i got an iPod Shuffle (4. Gen) with some strange behavior.
I connect it to my laptop or pc (Windows 7) and then i try to sync music with iTunes.
It syncs about 30-150 songs and then i hear the "Eject-Sound" of usb devices
from Windows and i got an Error message from iTunes that "not all objects could
be transferred to the iPod. The iPod itself then is not listed in iTunes anymore.
If I then plug out the iPod and want to listen to the music which it should have been
transferred to the iPod it says: "Please use iTunes to sync music to this iPod"
Plugging it in again theres the windows dialog if i want to "check and repair this device"
Starting iTunes it says that all the space is free on the iPod.
Somethimes I hear the sound from windows for the eject usb media permanent
and cant copy anything to the ipod. I also tried "restore ipod" via iTunes several times
but without success, problems exists further.
I think, that perhaps the flash memory of the iPod is defective or something which
has to do with the transfer process.
I got another iPod (4. Gen) which works without any problems, with the same cable.
So it must be something wrong with this iPod.
The iPod is like 10 months old and in warranty.
Should i send it in to Apple? I think this is a hardware problem....
    with kind regards

You've ruled out a bad cable, a bad USB port on computer, and a software problem on the computer, because your other shuffle works fine.  And a Restore does not help.  That pretty much says the cause is a hardware problem on the shuffle.
So, if it's under warranty, definitely have it checked by a tech before the year is up.  If you have an Apple Store nearby, you can do so at the store's Genius Bar.  You can make a reservation at the store's web page (not required but it may save you waiting time)

what trouble are you having? if after it says sync complete, and then you click on the eject arrow next to xxxx's ipod and it still says Do not Disconnect after ten minutes?  I just pull the cable. you can shut down the computer first if you want. never done any damage so far.

  • Ejecting USB drives - very slow

Since updating to Yosemite, my brand new iMacs (work machines) are all noticeably much slower ejecting USB flash drives. Really slow. These are new, top spec iMacs with clean installs and pretty empty harddrives.
    Anyone else noticing this?

I was using my girlfriends USB 128MB stick last night, with no red light showing (well, not that I noticed), then when i dragged it to the ejector/recycle bin, the red light came on constantly (I presumed to tell me that it was ready to remove). I waited 5 seconds to see if it would go out but didn't.

  • Photosmart 7525 now errors when insert USB thumbdrive (error B8BD3348)

I have been using a USB thumbdrive to scan documents then move to my computer to save (I prefer this over emailing documents, routed through the internet, for security). I have done this for months with the same printer, flash drive and laptop.Recently, I inserted the thumbdrive, the screen flashes blue with a code I think is B8BD3348 (it flashes bright so the video on my phone gets overwhelmed and blurs, and it is gone in under 2 seconds) then the screen goes black with "Printer Error: There is a problem with the printer. Turn the printer off then on." and all the lights (power, network, home, back, cancel and help) start flashing.I can reset (if I take out the USB, otherwise when it restarts it does the same thing). And the USB thumbdrive can still be read by the computer, and I have scanned the thumbdrive (TrendMicro) and found no issues.

Hello , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! I see you are having USB issues.  I would love to try and help you, but I do need a little information first. I am linking a few HP Support documents below that will show you how to find your product number. Also, please include which operating system you are using. Also, if you're using Windows, please include whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Which Windows operating system am I running?

  • Instant Client on a USB thumbdrive

Can you install and run the client from a USB thumbdrive? I want to be able to access my oracle from my home computer at work.

You can run Instant Client from any device.
You will have to find a way to add the directory that contains Instant Client to the PATH environment variable.
If you need sqlnet.ora or tnsnames.ora or ldap.ora, you must also set TNS_ADMIN.
Make sure that there is no firewall or proxy server between client and server.
    Yours,

  • USB thumbdrive won't eject

I formatted a USB thumbrdive as Extended + Journaled, GUID  partition. Actually I did it on 2 different thumbdrives to see if the problem would repeat and it's the same on both. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the small Boot partition off my machine onto this thumbdrive, and it completes successfully. Problem is, it won't eject - I drag it to the trash, I right-click and choose Eject, and nothing happens - it just sits there on my desktop (but is no longer visible to Disk Utility). Before I pull it out physically, I was curious if anyone knew why it won't just eject like all others do?

    Problem resolved itself.

  • Issues with Sandisk U3 2GB USB Thumbdrive

My MBP has 2 USB slots, when i plug in my U3 into any of the slots, the drive is recognised by MBP. But if i were to transfer files (usually happens to large files such as those 50MB and above) from U3 to MBP, the transfer status just hang and i cannot eject the drive. So must force it to quite by manually unplugging the U3.
Then i would normally plug it in again for few times and i can transfer the files. This does not happend when transfer frm MBP to U3. And this does not happen to other my other Sandisk Cruzer 1GB thumbdrive.
From what i observed if i plug in the drive long enough (let say 5 min) then only initiate file transfer from U3 to MBP, usually it will not fail.
BTW, using the same U3 on Windows does not give any issue. And i've formatted my U3 a few times as FAT32 format.
