Trouble enabling Palm OS Sync'ing in iSync 2.2

I have a user with an iMac G5 running OS X 10.4.6, iSync 2.2, and Palm Desktop 4.2.1 rev D. (All the latest and greatest). Right now his Treo syncs through Palm Desktop fine to his Palm database, but we'd like to switch him over to sync to Address Book and iCal. In the old days of iSync 1.x I knew how to do this by installing Apple's "iSync Palm Conduit 1.2", but nowadays I understand with iSync 2.x you need to run the "Devices > Enable Palm OS Syncing..." menu command first which patches the conduits correctly.
The problem is, when I try that I get an error saying that Palm Desktop isn't installed properly. I know that it is, and just to be sure I reinstalled it. I also opened up the permissions fully by issuing a "sudo chmod -R a=rw+X /Applications/Palm" command in Terminal.
One thought I have is that this user is a Standard user. Do you need to run the "Enable Palm OS Syncing..." command as an administrator, since there may be application support pieces installed elsewhere? Has anyone else had issues getting this to work?
Your help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It is a permissions problem, but not in the location you imagine. The issue is primarily with the permissions settings here:
Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:Palm HotSync
This issue occurs most commonly because a user has chosen to perform an archive and install of Mac OS X. Here are the appropriate Terminal entries to correct it:
• sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Applications/Palm
• sudo chmod -R 775 /Applications/Palm
• sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ HotSync/
• sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ HotSync/
• sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ Desktop/
• sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ Desktop/
Running those commands should resolve the issue.

  • HotSync Palm works, can't use iSync

We can sync our old Palm m505 using HotSync 3.2.1 to Palm Desktop 4.2.1 with no problems.
My daughter wants to sync instead with iCal, though.
When we launch iSync 2.4 and select Devices, Enable Palm OS Syncing..., click Continue, it says the HotSync software is not properly insatlled or it has never been opened.
We open HotSync Manager and try again, no luck.
The first time we tried, we were apparently using an older version of HotSync, but downloading and installing a newer version didn't help, we're getting the same error.
We'll try renaming the Palm account so there are no spaces and see if that helps, but I'm not holding my breath and am hoping someone here can suggest something.
    TIA

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This, or a slight variant of the message you report, is the most common issue encountered with synchronizing a Palm device under OS X. It usually occurs as a result of a user electing to install Mac OS X using the archive and install option.
Here are two methods you can use to correct the problem:
Take a look at the permissions of the folders listed below by selecting each folder, one at a time, and—either using the I key sequence or the Get Info option in the File menu of the Finder—opening the information box for the folder. Your permissions for the folders listed below should appear as described below the pathname to that folder:
    For the Macintosh HD:Applications:Palm folder:
    Ownership & Permissions
    You can: Read & Write
    Details
    Owner: <shortusername>
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: admin
    Access: Read & Write
    Others: Read only
For the Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:Palm Desktop folder:
    Ownership & Permissions
    You can: Read & Write
    Details
    Owner: <shortusername>
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: admin
    Access: Read & Write
    Others: Read only
For the Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:Palm HotSync folder:
    Ownership & Permissions
    You can: Read & Write
    Details
    Owner: <shortusername>
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: admin
    Access: Read & Write
    Others: Read only
You can either reset those values manually, then restart and recheck them to be sure that they are set correctly or use the Terminal application by typing these strings listed below this example—substituting your short user name—as shown below:
    sample: "sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Applications/Palm"
    actual: "sudo chown -R michaellafferty:admin /Applications/Palm"
…where michaellafferty is the <shortusername> in my case. Be sure to pay attention to the spaces in each string, and the direction of the / or \ forward and back slash characters.
Here are the appropriate Terminal entries. Each is is shown bulleted below, but actually begins with the term sudo:
    • sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Applications/Palm
NOTE: at this point, you'll be asked to enter your login password
    • sudo chmod -R 775 /Applications/Palm
    • sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ HotSync/
    • sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ HotSync/
    • sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ Desktop/
    • sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ Desktop/
Again, pay particular attention to the spaces and to the \ characters, as both are critical to the syntax of these commands. Remember to place your actual shortusername in the string where the <shortusername> placeholder is shown, as in the sample above. Do not include the < and > characters around your actual shortusername.
As a Palm user, don't elect to archive and install Mac OS X unless there is no other method to do so which insures that your applications and data are preserved.

  • No enable palm option / no sync / no joy / no phone completion / no holiday

Hi. After reviewing all the advise found here, I repeatedly fixed permissions, updated to Palm Desktop rev D, reinstalled combined Mac OS 10.4.7, but still iSync does not see my Palm (105) anymore. There is no "enable palm" item in iSync menu and "Add Device" does not respond when I click it.
The Palm conduit is however installed in the conduits folder (and I have disabled all the wouldbe conflicting conduits). If I run hotsync, it hangs on the iSync conduit.
The motorola phone icon is not displayed in the iSync window now - just "motorola..." and it does not expand to offer any other options, though it is paired and theoretically syncing, but calender dates at least are not completed...
    What else to try!?
I did previously have the phone and palm all syncing beautifully untill I erased the hard drive, reinstalled everything from scratch and thus complicated my life dramatically.
    Help!

  • Sync'ing a Palm Zire 72 with Windows 7 (Home Premium 64)

Ok I am probably a dinasour but have relied on my Zire 72 for years for all the contacts and calendar items I don't want to keep on my phone but now cannot get it to sync with Windows 7.  I never used Vista, migrated straight from XP to Windows 7 but have read all the threads on Vista and hot sync'ing.  I know I apprently can't use the direct USB cables as there are no 64 bit drivers from palm for this so I purchased the recommended USB-1510 IRDa adaptor.  Even though Cables Direct does not seem to have Windows 7 drivers, Windows 7 appeared to recognize and accept the Vista 64 drivers and the adaptor seems to be recognized.  I am using Hotsync 4.1.0 and Palm Desktop 4.1.4.  Have tried everything, soft resets of the Palm, reboots of both the computer and palm, reinstallation of the software, etc and cannot get these to sync.  I either get the message that the connection cannot be established or once or twice that the port was being used by another process.
Does anyone have any suggestions before I competely give up.  Many thanks!
    Post relates to: Zire 72

I have hotSync Manager 6.0.1 and while the Zire 72 will NOT sync over the USB cable it will sync over a Bluetooth connection. You need to have a Bluetooth interface either built into the computer or a Bluetooth USB plug in device. Then you have to set up the channel by making both devices visible to other devices once they recognize each other you have to follow the dircetions in Windows 7 for making it a trusted device. After they are trusted devices they will sync over Bluetooth which is slower that using a straigth USB cable but it works.
This is also the way you can sync a Palm LifeDrive and HP Ipaq with SW on Windows 7. Yes I have all three and this was the easiest way so  I could make them sync up suing the same interface. The Lifedrive and HP Ipaq can also sync over WIFI but this was easier for me since all the devices use the same interface, i.e. no remembering special setups.
I am running WIn 7 Home Premium and I am using Palm Desktop Application 4.1.4 for all Palm syncs. I have 2 Zire 72 Palms and 1 Life drive. They all come up in that Palm Desktop Application allwoing me to copy things from one to the other.

  • ISync / Palm AddressBook sync problem

Supposedly I should be able to set up iSync so that iCal syncs with Palm DateBook but the Palm Desktop AddressBook continues to sync with the Addressbook on my handheld. Following the directions in the support document below to I have set up iSync to sync iCal with the Palm Datebook, but have disabled syncing of Contacts (=Mac Address Book) because I prefer the the Palm Desktop AddressBook software.
"iSync: How to use with Palm Desktop"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93166
Since I have unchecked "Contacts" in the iSync setup there should be no conflict with the Palm AddressBook conduit. However, when I follow the directions in the above document, iSync reports a conflict and disables the Palm AddressBook conduit.
How can I sync iCal to my handheld, but continue to sync the Palm Desktop AddressBook?
    Thanks,

With the release of Mac OS X 10.4 and iSync 2, this additional, undocumented step became necessary:
You must toss the com.apple.isync.plist file from your users Preferences folder after unchecking either the Contacts or Calendars option in the device pane in iSync and restoring the appropriate Palm conduits to the active Conduits folder.

  • Having trouble sync'ing. Receiving Overcapacity error on my 64GB iPhone 5. Backed up and restored but still having sync issues.

I have an iPHone 5 64GB with iTunes 11 installed on an 2 yr old HP laptop running Windows 7. I am having sync'ing issues. I am receiving an overcapacity error I have not seen before even though I can manually remove audiobooks I have previously loaded to get the overcapacity down below the available 64GB limit. I have removed most of them now and can get the sync to begin. Not sure if it will actually complete. But now I do not have but a relatively few audio books loaded. I have backed up and restored to see it that helps but am still getting the same overcapacity error. Seems whatever I had included was doubled in an "other" category. Also, in the recent upgrade to iTunes, it takes forever to sync when I change content. Sync'ing takes a lot longer than before. Has anyone else experienced similar performance issues.

Lawrence Finch has previously provided the following helpful info...
"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
Text messages   (*** this can take up a lot of space)
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
If you have a lot of text messages stored, that can make "Other" very large.  Another problem area is corrupted files.  When app and data files become corrupted, they may end up in "Other".  To fix that, perform a restore from a recent backup.  That prevents corrupt files from showing up.

  • Overclocking & Vertical sync'ing issue's

O.K. This post is strictly for braging rights.  I have reached 295mhz FSB with 1.7 voltage at a 5:4 ratio.  I must have had issue's before with vertical sync being disabled.  With memory running further than 220 mhz I would get serious fragmentation with Open GL mostly, but for some reason when vertical sync is enabled, the frag.'s only appear in UI's of Open GL games...  the rest of the game is fine (which I can live with).  Of course your limiting FPS with vertical sync enabled, but really is it all just an illusion past 30 fps anyway?  I can't run this board past 295mhz fsb, but still not bad an OC at all, at least by my standards.
I am finally satisfied with this boards overclocking abilities, but I do think this issue will also result from D.O.T. and should be addressed in a bios fix, or at least a mention in the motherboard manual.  The threshold for my ram is about 220 with minor artifacts and changing RAM and video cards still had same sync'ing issue's.  Relaxing timings and up'ing voltages had no effect also.  Performance mode becomes disabled at 5:4 so that wasn't a cause either.  Hope this helps.

Whooops... Ain't it getting steaming and stuffy with 295FSB folding for hours...   Give your CPU a beer for the hard work...

  • Best phone for Sync-ing with iCal?

I'm due to upgrade my mobile and wondered which is the best available handset for Sync-ing with a mac. At present I have the Sony Ericson K750i which was working fine up until I upgraded to Tiger.
    Any ideas?

Has anybody had any experience syncing the Motorola
    KRZR with iCal?
I own a Motorola KRZR K1m (Sprint), which is supposedly supported by iSync 2.4. This seems to be a troublesome phone in regard to compatibility with iSync. If you read the iSync discussions, you will see many problems. Those that do get iSync to accept the KRZR as "supported" seem to still have problems with iCal in particular. Evidently, there are some system hacks available to force the sync to work with iCal. If you are not comfortable with getting inside files and re-writing code, then you may not be a happy camper.
Naturally, if you have access to a Windows machine, you will have no problem. (... Getting ready to duck, since that last statement will draw out all the Apple apologists and Apple-employee-wannabes ...)
Personally, I have had no success getting iSync to recognize my KRZR at all. While I can transfer files via bluetooth, the iSync issues make me wish I had some other phone. In fact, the iSync/KRZR issues are probably going to lead me to change to another (known to be supported) phone. Since I'm stuck with Sprint, that won't be easy.
    Good luck!

68575B46-9075-11DB-8B94-000D933084AA:ABPerson represents a single record in the Address Book on your Macintosh desktop or portable computer.
That records is corrupted or incomplete, and the errors further up the list point to three electronic mail identifiers which cannot be properly handled. The first and third contain duplicated field data: the second contains no data. The first electronic mail records is labeled Home, and each of the others is labeled work.
The easiest way to handle this is to launch the Address Book, locate the record identified by the electronic mail address, create a new record and enter the correct and and complete information for that individual, then delete the original, troublesome records. Then synchronize as you typically would, and the deletions and additions you've made will propagate throughout your framework.
With the Missing Sync for Palm OS, you can simply and shorten this process by temporarily creating and using a conduit profile containing only the Mark/Space Contacts conduit, leaving all others in this profile inactive.

  • ICloud Library stopped sync'ing

I have Photos.app and iCloud Library on two computers, sync'ing with an iPhone 6. Everything was working perfectly for a week - any changes on one device showed up on the others very quickly. Then suddenly my main computer stopped receiving updates. Newly shot photos show up on my laptop and at icloud.com, but never appear on my main machine. Photos on the main machine says "Last updated Monday" (it's now Friday).
I've tried restarting, and tried pausing and resuming sync in the prefs, but nothing seems to get it going again. All machines are on the same wifi network, the phone is fully charged, all updates are applied.
    Ideas?

Solved! But it wasn't pretty. In case it's helpful to others, here's how I solved it:
I finally got desperate and in the preferences, disabled iCloud Photo Library, then after a few minutes, re-enabled it. When I re-enabled it, it said I had 86 "referenced files" that it needed permission to access. After some Googling, I realized that referenced files are files that don't live within the Photos library folder, but that are linked to. It then told me to find these referenced files and pull down File | Consolidate to bring them into the Photos library. It did not tell me *how* to find them, but I got creative and made a Smart Album of all images with type "referenced."
The smart album revealed the problem images, but when I selected some and pulled down File | Consolidate, Photos said it needed permission and told me to navigate to ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2012 and put up a file navigation dialog. So the "referenced" files were still in iPhoto! Huh? My other 20,000 images had migrated over just fine.  No idea why this was. But here's where the 2nd problem began. I *could not* navigate to that folder, since "iPhoto Library" does not appear in the Finder as a folder. So the dialog was telling me to do something  impossible.
After puzzling on this for a while, I realized that the problem could be solved by deleting the references to external files from Photos and re-importing them manually. I launched iPhoto and manually found all 86 images (they were from three  albums and fortunately I'm good about titling and labeling, so was able to find them easily. I then exported them from iPhoto as full res originals, deleted the references in Photos, and imported the old problem images as if they were new.
Photos then churned against iCloud overnight. By morning, it had become unstuck, and the photos I've shot over the past week are now present.
So the problem was not the new photos, but some old photos that for some reason had not migrated over from iPhoto properly. And Photos was recommending a fix that was impossible to achieve the way it was instructing me to. What a mess.

  • Bluetooth Sync'ing with Prius Issues

    Ok so here we go.
Back in 2006 I bought a Prius. A couple of months later got a 700P. I had a heck of a time getting it to sync with my car. I remember reading here about a patch for the phone itself to resolve it. I downloaded the patch and all was well and sync'ing.
Then came the computer crash of 2008. Not to mention my phone was stolen.
So with the aid of the phone insurance I have a new phone, and also got a new computer. Now I cannot find that patch information anywhere!
    Any suggestions?
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)

Ok found the solution and will post it here if anyone else has the same issue.
When you use the interface on your Prius to set up a new device, then you open your palm to sync it will ask for the car's password. When you input it, the device will show up but the car still won't recognize it. It will stay on the screen saying "input the security code".
So once you put in the code in on your phone, make a phone call. That seems to sync it up with the car.
    Hope this helps others!

  • IPod Touch 5.1.1 no longer sync'ing w/ iTunes 11.1.3(8). . . .Bad Battery ???

Three day ago my iPod began acting up in a major way.  The battery charging symbol within the battery indicator is no longer showing the iPod being charged when plug in to my MacBook Pro 5.1 via one of my two USB ports.  A new Apple iPod cable was purchased thinking it was a bad wire or pin not making the proper contact with this device.  The same conditions are happening with this new cable.  I have several other peripheral devices and those devices are working and are connecting to my MBP's USB port without any issues.  I have noticed for the past six months my iPod Touch 3rd Gen has been showing signs in needing longer charging times and seems to drain quicker than it used too.  The iPod for the past two nights have been charging for more than eight-hours each night and is sporadic as if it deciding "I'm I fully or 30% charged?" Although subtle, It seems to jump within the sliding battery scale when the device is powered off for a while.  Sometime showing 80% charged when used for a few hours to 30% charged when used for ten minutes.  My iPod is now over three-years old and I think it is time for a new battery!
But, in all honesty, not sync'ing with iTunes is it more than just have a new battery professionally installed? Or are there other electronical problems/components going bad with these devices?  What else can be wrong other than a new battery or will a new battery fix all what is mentioned above? Please be very honest and technical if needed, Thanks!
