Trouble from our Lab Machines

We are now getting close with everything ... we have the correct authentication working for our admins, faculty, and students. There are a few problems with logging in on our lab machines. The thing that concerns me the most is the following error we get on Safari on the Mac:
"There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer. The required file was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed."
iTunes then opens, but does not open iTunes U. What file is trying to be updated? FireFox does not open iTunes U as well.

It maybe easier to test Firefox on the Mac.
Are you using Workgroup Manager on these lab machines?

  • Trouble with restoring an iPhoto library from a time machine backup.

I'm having trouble restoring my iPhoto library from a time machine backup.
I have created a new library in my pictures file.
When I try to restore the library the restore process is trying to copy it to an external drive that no longer exists - it failed and I had to have it recovered and all the recovery (including backups) data is now on a different external hard drive.
iPhoto had been using that old external drive location to start. iPhoto is now pointed to the newly created iPhoto library in my pictures file on my MacBook Air.
Is there a way to have the restoration process point to that new iPhoto library that is now empty and not to the old external drive?

You might try this with the restored library:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Photoshop CS5 keeps crashing on one machine in our lab

Photoshop CS5 keeps crashing on one machine in our lab.
There are no message as to why its crashing, it just tells us and offers to shut it down.
What logs would I be looking at -= What are they called and where are they?
We're running Photoshop CS5 with all patches as part of the master suite.
The PC is running Win 7 with SP1 and all patches.
    Thanks
    Shel

Click Start and type event log into the search box.  When View Event Logs comes up, click it.
Navigate to Windows Logs - Application.  Look for red error messages corresponding to times when Photoshop crashes.  Look specifically for Faulting Module indications.
Good general advice is to go to the web site of the maker of the video card in that machine and download/install their latest update for the specific hardware and operating system.

  • I have an iPad 2.  I cannot get it to print from our Hp photosmart 6525 printer.  Both Hp and apple say these machines can use AirPrint.  Can anyone help

I have an iPad 2 and cannot get it to print from our p photosmart 6525 printer.  Does anyone know how to get the AirPrint to work between these two machines?

    Hi,
As soon as the devices connected to your network the printer should appear as AirPrint.
You may ensure it is connected by clicking the wireless icon on the printer screen to locate its IP, then type the IP into Safari and check if you can access the printer homepage from your iPad.
If the printer conncted but still not being detected as AirPrint, ensure you have the latest firmware for your printer:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03312867&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en &product=5271613&tmp_track_link=ot_search
If the printer still not being dedected I would rather suspect the network as AirPrint uses Apple Bonjour and therefore require your network to support multicasting to operate..
You may test it by temporary setting direct connection using Wireless Direct, if the printer being detected without using the router please clarify your router brand and model to better understand your router capabiities.
The steps to enable Wireless Direct can be found listed below:

  • Lenovo W530/W540 Getting Destination host Unreachable from our Firewall

    Hey Everyone!
I'm having some bizarre issues with all of my Lenovo W530/W540's.  I'm not sure when the issue started, the first time it was reported to me was around March, and it has been persistant since the issue was discovered.  The issue is that, quite frequently, our Lenovo W530/W540's will get Destiantion Host Unreachable if I run a continuous ping (ping -t ...) to anything outside our firewall.
I have run a ping to things inside our firewall (other computers/servers, etc.) and they will return good ping until the cows come home.
However, if I try to ping anything outside our firewall (google.com, google DNS 8.8.8.8, yahoo.com, etc.) about every 30 seconds (every 30-35 returns) it starts returning Destitnation Host Unreachable from our Firewall.  This will last for around 10-25 returns, and then traffic goes back to normal.
We are a majority Apple Shop, and when I attempt to ping from any Apple on the network, it get fine returns consistently.  I also tried pinging from the few non-Lenovo Windows Machines we have as well (my personal machine which is self-built Windows rig, a couple of windows test machines, and a Windows 2008 Server we have) and they also have consistently good returns as well.
It is ONLY the Lenovo's that have this problem.  To compound things, they have no issue when they are connected to a different network other than the company network.  This ONLY happens when they try to interact with traffic going THROUGH our Firewall on our company network.  It happens regardless of whether they hardwired or wireless.  Also, during the Destination Host Unreachable moments, Windows does not detect a disruption, it keeps registering good connection.  I do not know how often Windows checks for connection, but these Destination Host Unreachable moments are so quick, I'm fairly certain that Windows can't even detect them.
Our Firewall is a Linux CentOS server that is running Shorewall Firewall Software.  The Destination Host Unreachable notice is coming from our Firewall directly, not from our ISP, so for some reason, the Lenovo is having a problem talking to our FW.
We currently only have 3 of these machines in circulation, but its having a pretty big impact on those with the machines, as going to a website is even a chore, as they often get "Page Not Found"  and other errors when they try to load a website.
I'm a bit stumped, I've never seen a machine act this way where it only has problems on a particular network; usually its a global issue it has with everything.  Any and all help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Chris

DNS is set to be automatic, though I did try setting  a permenent DNS server in the IPv4 settings to our local DNS server AND Google DNS, and the issue still occurred.
The 2 Conflicting firewalls could be it, so I tested that.  I logged into the Local Administrator account on the machine so I could temporarily disable the firewall.  I disabled it, pinged out, and I still get Destination host unreachable, though weirdly, it seems to happen less than when on the other account (only about every 50-60 pings do I get Destination host Unreachable).

  • I am unable to restore my backups from my Time Machine

MacBook Pro – My reformatted system that won't restore from my time machine - HELP PLEASE
I loaded Lion when it first came     out and all my troubles started. (It was the same on my 24” iMac).     Mail particularly hardly worked on either machine after loading up     Lion but that's another story and I wish I had never upgraded to      Lion.
I am now in China and took my     MacBook Pro with me
To avoid mail problems I     eventually used web-mail as all I saw was the coloured spinning     wheel all day long otherwise
Gradually the machine got slower     and slower and I saw that coloured wheel more and more
Eventually a message came up to     say my Bootable Drive was almost full.
I checked and it wasn't full of MY     documents.  I see on this forum it's an Apple problem - reformatting and restoring user files will not help the problem
On 1st November I did a     Time Machine backup that completed OK
Since then I had removed ALL     documents safely to my Sony Vaio that we bought instead of another     Apple Mac.
Despite removing ALL documents and      emptying the trash for two users the HDD continued to fill up     rapidly
I decided to do one more last     backup on Time Machine so I could reformat the system – This     backup never completed
I had to reformat the system as it     was totally not useable by now
I had expected to put a Snow     Leopard DVD in and restore my system without any problem - I have done this before on my iMac
I was unable to point the restore     to my time machine as it has a WD lock partition and Apple restores     don't recognise the drive may be locked!
No problem I thought, as I will do     it later through the tools utility called Migration Assistant
I have tried several times with     Leopard and Snow Leopard but cannot get the utility to work, as it     is obviously picking up the corrupt “LAST” backup (This is a shortcut to the 6th November uncompleted backup
I tried to move the 1st November one to the last and move the other out as “”Corrupt”,     but we are not allowed to change time machine files.  Brilliant idea     but Apple stopped it!
So, I loaded Snow Leopard and got     it to see my Time Machine Files and restored first the Applications     – No problem
Then Library – This failed as     “You haven't permission” - What!  Why?  This is MY Laptop and MY     files.  Apple have to sort out this permission problem.  I have had     it three and a half years and it has driven me mad.  It's a flawed     way of working in my opinion.  It took me three years to empty the     trash because of it.
I then tried to restore the "System" folder which also has a library folder and that failed the same  - Why     doesn't Time Machine restore what it's told to?  Is it because I     called the MacBook Pro  something different?  It saw the backup     files OK and gave me the option of the previous MacBook or my iMac     that I also had on the same drive. I chose the MacBook but it would     NOT restore the system.
    Conclusion
So, I am stuck in China without my     MacBook Pro and unable to restore my system and unable to retrieve     the 1st November backup which was taken properly.
This means that I cannot run any     programmes and do any work
I have wasted two weeks altogether     on all the combined problems and without a usable system
Any ideas how to restore back to     the 1st November please?  Thanks in advance!

    UpdateAfter Advice from Apple
    RESTOREPROBLEMS
I spoke from China on the1st December to a very helpful Senior Apple Technical person.  He gave me my guidelines for a successful restore and we hung up.
Unfortunately, the backup hadn't enough space, so I repartitioned the hard drive and THEN followed his instructions.
At 6 am there was amessage to say it had restored OK (See screen-shot to say it wassuccessful) and so, I pressed OK to restart the MacBook Pro.
All I got was the same as before - a grey spinning wheel.
To cut a very long storyshort, I wasted the whole day trying to make a backup work to no avail. I came to the conclusion that this is yet another example of Lion not working, as I have never had this problem with Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I then got a screen shot of a message never seen before and that may help Apple ….
So, I sent them that screen-shot. Restarting did nothing of course.
    Timeto stop the nonsense!
To cut my losses of many days wasted time over the last 5 weeks, I gave up trying to restore and as I have all the data safely tucked away on an external drive, Irebuilt the MacBook Pro with just Leopard.
I then put all theApplications back on one by one and it runs perfectly. Luckily I also had these with me in China!
Ablisteringly quick system on the old Leopard
In fact, Pages and AdobeCS4 are how they were when we purchased the machine 3.5 years ago -Blisteringly quick.
I have a mega large Pages Newsletter about China that I think was over 20 Mb before I shrank it, as it had many photos. This brought the MacBook running Lion to it's knees. On my rebuilt MacBook Pro running Leopard, it ran blisteringly quickly, even before shrinking it.
I managed to finish thenewsletter that I had started on the 21st October and we bulk emailedit out as a PDF 1st December from my MacBook Pro running Leopard.
In fact, the machine isrunning so well, that I think I will stick with Leopard.
    LION
I always suspected the problem with Lion was it was constantly doing SAVES all the time that were in the foreground and not the background that I was unable to type in productively. My own opinion is that the developers had been trying to be TOO clever with Lion and for a busy person like me it crippled my productivity that went down by 50% and then eventually to ZERO %.
    CONCLUSION
I would like to thank the Apple Technical person for his efforts on my behalf and felt that he should receive this update to close the case.
I stated that hopefully he can pass my observations to the LION TEAM Management or to whoever in Apple needs to see this feedback. The dozen or so problems with Lion have already caused us to go and buy a Sony Vaio instead of another MacBook Pro.
This anti-Apple attitude is by a person that for over 3 years was utterly and completely soldon Apple. No more, as Lion killed all my enthusiasm for Apple. My colleague as well. I asked the Apple Technical person to PLEASE pass this on!  Whether he passed the report on I will never know!

  • How to refresh XML file  from my client machine

    Hai All
I have temp.XML and temp.XSL template in our server machine.
when i give a print from client machine first time it gives the record, and next time it did not get refresh.Always it shows the previous records in the browser. But when i go into the server machine and click on temp.xml,it shows the current record(correct records)
How to refresh XML file  from my client machine?

You never delete a Time Machine backup by dragging it to the Trash. You are supposed to use the TM application to manage the backups. What you will need to do now is to simply erase the drive using Disk Utility.

  • HT1199 I needed to restore my Imac (lion) from a Time Machine backup on a peripheral HD.  Everything woirked fine except none of my Pictures showed up and my TM backups were all erased.  Any way to recover??

I need to perform a complete restore of my IMac from a stand-alone HD Time Machine backup.  The restore was to the internal HD in the IMac.  The IMac is a new Intel i5 unit running Lion.  The restore went fine except none of my picture files appeared.  My external HD is partioned into a Time Machine Back Up and a Stoarge partion.  All the TM back ups prior to the restore are gone and the external storage was wiped clean.  3000 photos from our African Safaris are gone.  Any ideas on if they can be recovered from either the external storage drive or the internal HD?
Where did the older TM BUs go?
    Thanks for any advise

    Hello:
I don't know what you did, but there must have been some option to clear the external HD.  To my knowledge, restoring from a Time Machine backup will NOT clear the external HD.
Since I was not there, I really cannot speculate on what happened:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4927
In any event, there are third party tools that will attempt to recover data from erased drives (the erase normally deletes pointers, not the actual data).

  • Moving files from a Time Machine backup manually vs restoring from a Time Machine backup

I have read several articles saying that contemporary Macs and OSs are built such that they clean themselves up - defragmentation, general sweeping, etc. I was told by the Genius, however, that there are many little files that are left lying around after installs, uninstalls, file making, and file deletion that will gum up the works. He recommended that I set up my computer as though it's brand new and manually transfer files over from my Time Machine backup folder on my ExtHD.
Because I couldn't find a discussion of this specific topic online, I thought I'd bring it to the community myself. Is there an advantage to setting up the computer from scratch and manually moving the files (provided I use Migration Assistant for applications)?
For background:  My Mac was running slowly, and after doing some research and talking to a "Genius", I thought it would be wise to reformat my HD and restore my system. Aside from sluggish performance, I was experiencing strange symptoms - like free disk space remaining the same even after deleting huge files, permissions errors, etc. I tried doing a permissions repair (a process I'd been told to do before when experiencing issues, even though I never knew what that really did), and read that I should verify my disk as well. Disk Utility told me that I had to reboot from the repair disk to perform the necessary repairs. The repair disk Disk Utility told me that my disk had some major issues and needed to be reformatted and restored.
HOURS LATER: I am back up and running now and Disk Utility is showing the appropriate amount of free disk space.

    Let's start with some basics.
Check under the Apple in the Menu bar About this Mac > More Info
How much Memory do you have installed?
What size is our hard drive and how much free space?
You'll find the term Genius does not necessarily mean they are expert. Even on this forum, you'll find varying difference of opinions and levels of expertise.
I have read several articles saying that contemporary Macs and OSs are built such that they clean themselves up - defragmentation, general sweeping, etc.
This is true. Apps like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, Washing Machine or anything like these apps might appear to be helpful, can do too more harm than good. As a result of the 'cleanup' it can leave your Mac non-functional Mac. The forums are full of users with computers that no longer work correctly after running these so call 'cleaners'
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4171
Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you > Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2319
I was told by the Genius, however, that there are many little files that are left lying around after installs, uninstalls, file making, and file deletion that will gum up the works.
I'm going to disagree here. Get rid of the installer from downloads after installing. After removing an app, most of the little files do no harm and take up very little space. However some applications mostly crapware/cleaners will leave files that continue to run silently in the background takeing up resources.
Don't install stuff you don't really need. There is no magic bullet to clean up your messes.

  • Adobe products BANNED from our studio

I run a digital lab and full wet darkroom facility.
Over the years, I have spent a lot of money on Adobe products. I used to promote Adobe products in workshops.
Adobe has descended to such low depths in terms of horrific customer relations, complete indifference and faulty software. Adobe products are now banned from our studio in that we are not making any further investment and looking for alternative image editing. (We are phasing out Photoshop.)
It's truly a shame that Adobe is slowly, but surely destroying its customer base.

    Thanks for your reply.
So, where does one post a thread about Adobe going from incompetent to utterly sinister? I'll be specific. I'm not so worried about the fact that Bridge crashes about two to three times per session. It's become an expectation. However, when "sales" gives completely erroneous information about upgrading, Adobe takes the money, then - after dedicating significant time to downloading and configuring - you find out that you've either been lied to or the person was just totally incompetent, or simply didn't care.
This is a problem that is pervasive is many - or most - large companies. There is complete mismanagement and lack of regard for customers. In the past three years, every transaction with Adobe has been nothing short of traumatic and time consuming. It has revolved around licensing and product performance issues every time.
I appreciate your comments about dealing with customer service. I've been down that road. However, in running a business, I have 24 hours in my day. I do not have time to be feuding with some poor, scared being in some far off developing country who has been trained as an unforgiving automaton.
Customer trauma and product abandonment are clearly just part of the Adobe cost equation. Steve Jobs is right. Adobe is lazy.
I used to teach and promote Acrobat for paperless solutions. Now, when someone asks, they are directed to other PDF producers. There is no way I will invest another penny in software by Adobe.

  • RoboHelp 9: Latest WebHelp not working from our product

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but my help files aren't working properly. I've made edits to them since last year, but when I open the help files from our product, I see last year's help files... not the current ones. Is there anything you can think of that would cause this issue?
Basically, I'm having trouble with the deployment of the help files. They don't appear to be available in the deployment package. What can I do to confirm that they are present (and correct) in the deployment package?

Yes to both questions. I am wondering if I gave the right files to the developers, though. Is there a particular file type that needs to be there: .chm for example? I'm not sure if the issue is on my end, or the developer's.
