Trouble with external FW HDD of 300gig with intel iMac - same HDD ok viaUSB

every five minutes it stop functioning and finder hang. same drive connected to a G5 no trouble, and this same drive connected to th eintel iMac via USB no trouble.

I have just done a quick test for you converting the TS files from a DVD.
1. Drag the files onto Streamclip.
2. Go to File>Export to QuickTime.
3. In the window that appears change the Compression setting to "Apple DV-PAL", the Quality slider to 100% and ensure that the Frame Size has "DV-PAL" selected.
4. Try it with the Deinterlace box selected or not. If you select it the conversion will take longer and I cannot see any advantage in the clip I have converted.
You may need to experiment to find the best settings for your needs but the above will give you something to get started.

  • Performance and instability trouble with intel iMac after 10.4.8

    Hi all,
I have a 20" intel (Core Duo) iMac. Everything was super fast and nice since I bought it last February.
I recently "software updated" to 10.4.8 and since then it seems slower, groggy, and Safari crashes regularly.
Is this a known issue or is it just me? Is there anyway to uninstall 10.4.8? Or, can anyone recommend a utility to help diagnose the problem?
    boxlight

    Hi boxlight,
No, you are not the first to mention the issues you are now experiencing with the 10.4.8 update...
Here's what I would try: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateintel.html - you can run the Combo Update and see if that "fixes" any issues. There have been posts re: using the Combo Update which ended up fixing some software glitches...
You can also go here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html#Anchor-Manually-49575 - I use the Terminal method to run the Maintenance Scripts and my Mac runs better than new...
    Good luck, Rick

  • Trouble with intel iMacs and OD binding

When setting up 12 of our new iMacs at school this fall, I've run into a problem. Once bound to our OD server, the machines will hang intermittently during boot (before a login screen).
In this lab we have 16 eMacs running 10.4.7, and now 12 intel iMacs running 10.4.7. The OD server is 10.4.7 server.
All machines were first bound to our school's AD server and tested. All logged in for two days of students.
Then today the OD server was finally up and running for mcx settings. The 16 eMacs were added without problem. The iMacs were added, but now if they are restarted they often hang. Rebooting them may fix it. Sometimes they need to be rebooted several times.
Once an intel iMac makes it to the log in screen they act as they should. They authenticate first to AD, then get whatever mcx settings they need from the OD.
Tried: clearing out all bindings and caches and starting fresh.
Note: The OD master is not bound to the AD, The OD server's kerberos record is disabled as outlined in this help article (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300765)
    Any help?

You don't really need the old OS 9 printer utility - other than to know how many prints your printer has made. It prints fine in OS X at it's best resolution.
I am using this printer everyday w/ an intel iMac.
Of course ... you need to connect your 16/600 to your network through an ethernet hub.
In System Preferences - Network - make AppleTalk active.
Then go to the Print & Fax preferences and set up new printer.
The 16/600 will show up there.

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

I am feeling so ripped off right now. I have wanted a Mac for years and believed the hype about it's stability and I have had more trouble with this Imac 2011 than I have ever had with a pc. It locks up with several software products from APP store. I have already had to have a technician to look at it and really couldn't figure out what the deal was.  I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software. This machine is only 4 weeks old and I am using 37 g on a 1 T hard drive. There is no reason for it to be locking up. Also, when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that. I successfully used the help program on my pc lots of times. I did not need a $2000. plus machine to just get email. I just wanted to unload on somebody that might understand my pain and after checking out this site...I think there is a few of you out there.

I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software.
The apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are written by third party developers, not Apple. If you have problems  with those apps you need to visit the support area for their websites. Launch the App Store, locate the app name. You should see a support link.
when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.helpviewer.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. Restart your Mac, try the Help menu.
If you need help finding that file, hold down the Finder icon in the Dock then click: New Finder Window. From the menu bar top of your screen click: Go > Go to Folder. Type this in exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist    That will take you right to that file.
(.plist) files stores information about a particular app or in this case, the Help viewer. Often times deleting the .plist file resolves the issue.
It's fine to "unload"... we understand that you expect your iMac to be stable but there are times when things go awry. That's why we have these forums so that you can you get help.

  • Hi, having trouble with my iMac on startup. Background screen appears, but no icons,

Having trouble with my iMac- on startup, the background screen appears, but no icons. The spinning beach ball appears for quite a long while, then when the icons finally come up, when I open a finder window, the only icons to appear are the Network and Macintosh HD icons. I've tried to repair disk permissions: this came up with heaps of errors, which it then fixed, but the original problem remains.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
    thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Same problem(s) in safe mode?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Wifi trouble with new iMac

I recently got a new iMac (27") and I am having an ongoing problem with wifi connection. It should be noted that other Apple devices -- iPad, iPhone, MacPro laptop, and Apple TV -- do not seem to have any trouble.  Nor did my old Mac Pro.  But the iMac connection keeps dropping. I have researched this issue in the Apple Support Forum and followed much of the advice, e.g. establishing a new connection identity, adjusting the DNS.  While these solutions seemed to work for a while it wasn't long before the problem returned. I have rebooted both the computer and the modem numerous times  (it is a DSL connection, BTW).  Those actions also seem to help for a while but sometimes they don't help at all.
Since I transferred data from my old Mac Pro I have wondered if I have a preference or permissions issue. I know how to delete preferences when software acts up and that has sometimes been very helpful. But I don't know how to accomplish a similiar fix with the wifi.
Software is up-to-date and I have not encountered any other problems with the iMac.
    Thanks.
    Alice

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Y50-70 trouble with intel drivers

Hi, I'm having a problem installing some of the intel drivers on my Y50-70, I had some trouble with my OS and decided to downgrade to windows 7 which ended up needing the Partition type change which wiped the disk, so here I am.I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, I've installed most of the drivers but there are 2 that just aren't working, the only driver I have actively not installed is the webcam driver, because I'm paranoid The drivers that aren't working:Intel Management Engine Interface Driver 9.5.15.1 730-"The setup program failed to install one or more device drivers. Setup will exit."andIntel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows 10.18.10 .3574/6. 16.0.3137- "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software"In my Device manager my current display adapter is listed as:Standard VGA Graphics adapterand I have a few items with yellow alerts, these are:3D Video ControllerEthernet ControllerPCI DevicePCI Simple Communications ControllerAny ideas as to why I can't install either of the Intel drivers? This is driving me nuts, any help will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the bunched text, apparently the spaces I used made the post complain about invalid HTML, today is not my day.

If you don't need the Management Engine, don't bother installing the drivers for it. Disable it in BIOS too.
As for the integrated graphics driver, you need to unpack it, then manually install it using Have Disk from Device Manager.

  • External 1080p LCD Monitor with Intel iMac

I have a 17" Intel iMAC. I would like to connect it to a new 40" 1080p LCD Monitor/TV. With the mini-DVI cable, and DVI to HDMI cable, will I be able to view 1920X1080 resolution on the external monitor? Will I be able to use both mirror and extended display modes? I am aware the internal graphic card can support up to 1920X1200 resolution.
    Thanks.
iMAC Intel Dual Core   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to the discussions!
You should be able to see it in the full 1920 x 1080 resolution. You can use either mirrored or extended desktop, but not both at the same time. It is an "either/or" proposition.
Does this new display have a DVI port? I would use that if possible. I understand that HDMI is digital, but you will not get a better picture by using it over standard DVI. HDMI is DVI plus audio.

  • Complicated Issues With Intel iMac

    So here we go:
Recently, after updating my QuickTime I restarted my iMac to a continuous "setup assistant" loop which from further research I came to find out that I wasn't the only one with this issue. So my solution to that was to go to the Apple Store and get an erase and install because I couldn't boot from my disk when the computer would start up.
Currently, my computer is hit or miss on startup. Sometimes it goes into the system like butter and times like today my computer LITERALLY takes 10-15 minutes to load fully. Upon load the computer functions at a fine speed but I don't understand why it would take this long to load the system. I do have an external HDD to use with Time Machine and often thought that that would be the problem on startup (getting confused about the startup disk or something) so I typically unplug it before startup and it still takes 10-15 minutes to reach my desktop. In addition, after the erase and install it never goes to the loading Leopard screen with the blue bar that goes around the screen right before you get to your desktop image.
Several things about this made me feel like resetting the PRAM was a good idea, however, whenever I restart the computer hold down OptionCTRL+PR it's like my computer ignores that. I do it right when the computer turns on and before the gray screen like the document says and the computer just skips it altogether and goes to the apple with the loading wheel. I have no clue what's wrong with my computer and wish it would function like the day before I updated QuickTime!
    Any help?

Use the Command key, not the Control key to reset PRAM (Cmd-Opt-P-R).
That said, it appears you have no data on the new iMac to save, so why not proceed with a clean installation? Turn off your iMac, take the gray Installation DVD that came with your iMac and insert it in the DVD slot on the right side of your display case. Hold down the C key while pressing the power button, and let it startup from the DVD. Select English as your language, then select the Erase and Install option, and let the default configuration setup proceed. After about 45 minutes (unless you elected to let it install all the available foreign languages (Options button during setup phase)), it will finish and reboot your Mac.
After restart, answer the questions so it can setup your user account and connect you to the Internet for registration and software updates. You may want to proceed with the Install Bundled Software package on the Installation DVD at this point to get the iLife '08 suite installed, as well.
It would probably be wise to use Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) to erase your Time Machine external FireWire HD so it can start with a clean drive, as well. You don't want to save the damaged stuff that's surely on that drive if you used it for Time Machine previously. Then, go into System Preferences/Time Machine and select the erased FireWire drive to use it.

  • HP Color LaserJet Problems with intel iMac

Can anyone give me advice on the following:-
When I try to print from my wife's new intel iMac 20" to our HP Color LaserJet 2550L, it doesn't work and print center gives me the following error message ... "The process "hppostprocessing" terminated unexpectedly on signal 5" .
The printer is connected directly to the iMac via USB. It's not on a network.
I ran the HP Color LaserJet installer from the original CD that came with the printer and when that didn't work I downloaded another (latest) Color LaserJet installer (dated 2004) from the HP website. Still getting the same error message from PrintCenter.
When I look at the HP installer log, it appears that the installer tried several times without success to install plugins into the PPD folder (HD->Library->Printers->PPD).
After trying installation and checking out my PPD folder (above) there is nothing in it.
This printer has been (still) working fine with our older 20inch iMac.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Same happened with my photosnart. Here is part of the email from HP
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand from your email that you are not able to print to your
photosmart 1218 printer from your new imac.
I believe you are correct when you mention the glitch between the new
    Intel processor in the iMac.
I have checked the Apple website and noted the pre-installed printer
drivers that ship with this operating system, do NOT include drivers for
the Photosmart 1218 printer. There are Gimp print drivers available for
the Photosmart P1000 printer. They may work, but provide only basic
printer functionality. (see the Apple document listed below).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303057#hpdrivers
I understand that our engineers are investigating the driver issue with
the Intel-based Macs, however, I cannot provide you with an expected
date of resolution. Your printer was manufactured in 2000, and the most
recent drivers are from Aug 2005. These drivers were created before the
    Intel based macs were available.

  • Dual networks, express and extreme problem with Intel iMac accessing both

I have two airport networks setup to two different ISP's. One is setup using two Airport Expresses with a printer hung off one. The other is setup with an Airport Extreme with two USB disks.
I have a G4 iBook 14" laptop and a MacPro 17" Intel laptop that see and can bee switched between both networks utilizing Internet Connect. They are running OS X 10.4.11.
The other system is an Intel iMac 20" (late 2006) running OS X 10.5.1. The only wireless network it sees is the Airport Extreme. This is frustrating because I want to be able to switch to the Express network to print and cannot get the iMac to recognize the network. Before upgrading to 10.5.1, I could, on occasion, see the other network, now I can not.
Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to fix it? I believe it is operating in 802.11n, but have no way to verify this.

I miss posted this in windows. I reposted this in the Airport Extreme.
