Trouble with JTextArea & JPassword field

What I want to do, is have a simple text box, where a user can put text, and store this text in a String field.
For the password, I just want to let the user have a password field, have it come up as '****' and again store the password in a String field.
Right now, to do this I have:
for the text area:
JTextArea textArea = new JTextArea ("Hello ",8,40);
getContentPane().add(textArea);
textArea.setLineWrap(true);
comment = textArea.paramString();
but I get the 2 errors:
paramString() has protected access in javax.swing.JPasswordField
password = pass.paramString();
and
cannot resolve symbol
symbol : method getContentPane ()
For the password one, I have:
String password;
JPasswordField pass = new JPasswordField("Please enter your password: ");
pass.setEchoChar('*');
password = pass.paramString();
and I get the error:
paramString() has protected access in javax.swing.JTextArea
     comment = textArea.paramString();
Could someone help me as to how I get around these errors or another suggestion as to what I could use?
Thank you very much,
nickeeboo.

I have no idea why you're trying to mess with paramString(). A friendly word of advice: don't. Please take some time to look up the protected keyword (in relation to fields) and I think the reason for your errors will dawn on you.
There are far simpler ways of doing what you want, as you will see.
To get the text from a JTextArea, use
textArea.getText()To get the password from a JPasswordField, use
password.getPassword()

  • Trouble with PDF fonts - fields only

    We're having trouble with our PDFs once the data is merged into the PDF template. All of the merged data appears cut in half in the form fields so only the top half of the letters are shown; the rest of the document is fine. We think this could be due to a font issue, but loading different fonts haven't seemed to make any difference. Could this be caused by anything besides the fonts?
    Thanks!

    Pdf is designed for presenting information graphically to reduce the file size. This reduction is achieved by making it an uneditable - something that comes in handy if you don't want people to alter your content.
    You can (using a pdf writter) create pdf forms where information can be added in to a text field or box. However if you want to edit the content from a pdf file then you could select the text and copy and paste it in to a document like Pages or Word and then re-export when you're finished.
    But I'm affraid you can't edit pdf as such - this is the case on Macs and PCs. If you need to edit documents on different platforms then you'll need to find a common editor. There's Office for Mac (student teacher versions) or you could try OpenOffice Org - it's free, works on both Macs and PCs, and will convert most Word documents provided there's not too many tables or a complex layout format.
    Hope this helps

  • Trouble with Visible/Invisible Fields on PDF Form

    I created a fillable, calculating pdf form in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, but ran into some issues, so I'm taking a stab at LiveCycle that I've never used before today.  By reviewing sample template forms, I'm able to pick up the tricks of the trade, but I'm struggling with one particular field.  I got it to calculate and the amount shows in the subtotal, but I don't know why I can't get the field itself to show the amount calculated.
    FS1 is a numeric field where a customer puts square footage.
    Based on the square footage a calculation occurs.  Here is the statement:
    topmostSubform.Page1.Total[1]::calculate - (FormCalc, client)
         Total[1] = 208.75
    elseif (FS1 > 3600) then
         Total[1] = 154.30
    elseif (FS1 > 2000) then
         Total[1] - 136.15
    elseif (FS1 > 0) then
         Total[1] = 99.85
    endif
    When I put in 5000 in the FS1 field, 154.30 is added to the subtotal, but no amount shows in Total[1] field.
    Working with properties in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 was easy, LiveCycle takes a little more getting used to, so any help is appreciated.
    Thank you.
    if (FS1 > 7200) then

    You may have just pasted your code in a funny way but I noticed your 'if' statement is underneath the rest of your message. Assuming it is in the correct place and you change "Total[1] - 136.15" to "Total[1] = 136.15" it should work. Also just to let you know that in formcalc you can use the "$" to reference the field you are in (so you could use $ instead of Total[1] in your formula).

  • Trouble with mapping CMR field using Sun One Studio

    I am having trouble adding a cmr between 2 entity beans. It is a simple one to one relationship, navigatable in only one direction. In the database I have a foreign key defined between the two tables that store the data for the beans.
    I add the relation by selecting the 2 beans and define it as one directional, one to one , with the name "bb". I then map the relationship field via the properties/As Sun One tab. I use the foreign key defined in the database. All seems to be well.
    Using Sun One AppServer 7 and Studio 4
    Upon deploying the application I receive:
    CMP Mapping Error in bean Sites:: Warning: The field bb is not mapped.
    Set the column mapping for the field.

    The CMR/CMP mappings is very instable.
    Sunone Studio 5 has a lot of bugs when mapping CMP/CMR but i never saw this one, try to upgrade.
    Please vote for this bug. It's killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Trouble with prasing password field text as string

    Hi,
    I am using the newest SDK and having trouble prasing the text in password field as string instead of object.
    I tried to use toString method but it ended up display the address instead....
    How should I do it?...

    DarrylBurke wrote:
    I would think you'd get the text as a String from a JPassword Component.Um, JPasswordField#getText() is deprecated for security reasons, and it is recommended to use getPassword(), which returns a char[]
    dbGood catch Darryl, I didn't go back and check; which I should have. Sorry for the misleading information then. My thoughts were that the getText() would most likely be done like this:
    char[] text = myPwdField.getText().toCharArray();
    ... but, as I said, I did not go back and look. Sorry.

  • Trouble with dynamically filling fields

    I have a large form that contains over 50 pages. The first page is a flowable user input form.
    There are several fields which are common with other fields in the various underlying hidden pages. When a user selects an account type from a dropdown list, the appropriate account opening checklist appears as page 2.
    The user then selects various checkboxes which then makes the appropriate additional pages visible. Thes additional pages contain fields that should autopopulate based on the data entered in page 1 input form.
    The fields that are globally bound are fine. The problem is fields where I need to script to autopopulate. For example, there is a ACH authorization distribution section with 2 checkboxes (one for Checking one for Savings) and one Account number field. The page for ACH data, shows the ABA and Bank Name fine since those are globally bound, but the account number is 2 separate fields that I need to script in order to fill in but it is not working correctly.
    I think it is the event I have used but I'm not sure which event is best to place the script in. I started in the initialize event of that page but that doesnt work. If I click the checking/savings checkbox again after the ach page is visible, the field populates.
    How do I get the field to be prefilled as soon as it becomes visible?
    I am very new to scripting and LC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    If you are new to scripting I might suggest using the Action Builder. It is a set of prebuilt actions that do not require scripting. If you are using Windows go to the toolbar at the top, go to Tools and select Action Builder. From there you set a condition and a result. From the condition select what field is going to hold the value you want to be copied and select "is not empty" from the first drop down box. Then in the result section select "set value of field" and then select the field that you want the data copied to. In the result section you will then select from the drop down box what you want the value to be and you select "to the value of field" and select your 1st field. This will mirror 2 fields or even multiple fields from 1 box without global binding. What is nice about the Action Builder is if you go to the Script box at the top you can see Livecycle will populate the actual code on the correct show event. This way you can start to see how the code works and build from there.

  • I'm having trouble with a Text Field and a Time Format

    I have created a form.
    There are many text fields for clients to fill out.
    One Field have been formatted to enter a time. Ex. 6:00pm.
    This works great unless it's a 12:00am time then the field reads 00:00am
    I would rather it read 12:00 am.
    How can I do this?

    Maybe you should put the time format in 24hour instead.

    Ahh! sorry for such a dumb Question! i realize the fault!..
    its been too long i have been away from programming! :-D
    thanks
    You made a scroll pane and put the text area inside
    it. So far so good. But then you screwed up by adding
    the text area directly to the panel, instead of
    adding the scroll pane to the panel.

  • Trouble with 3rd party VST installs for Garageband, can't find instruments

    Hi,
    I am having trouble with Audio Units for Garageband when installing 3rd party software, VSTs, loops, instruments. I have more issues with Logic Pro. I am hoping that it is the same underlying issue and that I am just missing something. I have the manuals (not great for troubleshooting). I am confused with some installs use User Library and others use the Computer Library. I do go to the mfgs sites for updates. The installs sometimes work as standalones but I don't see ALL of the components of the software in say Garageband or Logic. Mostly, I am missing the "instruments" and "loops" that I want to access within the DAW. Some examples:
    • Here is some of the software I am talking about:  East West sample libraries (Play and Native Instruments); Vienna Symphonic librarires; Sylenth1 (just last night); Sample Tank 2 and Total Workstation 2 from IK Multimedia and others.
    • In GB I see the Audio Units for Vienna, Play, Sylenth, some of the IK Multimedia but NOT any instruments when I go to the "Sound Generator" -- I seem to be missing the instruments and loops. I see less AUs in Logic Pro. Some of these are VST instruments.
    • Can I just drag-drop samples to the library folders to fix this?
    • The plug-ins do not seem to work (though Sylenth1 worked for a single sound). When there is a standalone app (as in Sample Tank), I finally got the "sounds" to be reinstalled and loaded, those sounds/samples don't show up in any DAW.
    • When and if the sounds/loops/samples show up in GB's "Instruments" section will I be able to tell that they belong to that particular software or library?
    Thanks in advance.
    John

    Found the answer myself, it was simple:
    • Select the Track
    • Show the Instrument (info area)
    • Click on Edit
    • Click on the "Sound Generator" pop up field.
    • At the bottom of the pop-up list, select from the Audio Units that you have installed. This is where you see "Sample Tank 2, Vienna Instruments..."
    • NEXT -- IMPORTANT:   CLICK ON THE PICTURE next to the Sound Generator pop-up field.The AU unit loads up, the interface pops up, you load up the instruments in this AU Unit. You do NOT see the sounds from the AU unit in the normal Apple instrument list.
    This was not intuitive but once you know it, fairly simple.
    Still, the devil is in the details -- more questions on the way.

  • Trouble with 3 ATV to connect to iTunes in one WiFi / LAN

    Hi community,
    I've trouble with my ATVs in my network. I have 1 3Gen. ATV connected via LAN to iTunes on iMac and 2 2Gen. ATVs via WiFi. The problem I am facing is, if I am connected with two of them to my iTunes Library the third can't even the others ( which have been conneted) are off. If I restart iTunes, I can connect again two of them and the third (doesn't matter which one) cannot. So I can circle arround which one gets connected but it is not very satisfying.
    My network is setup on two Airport express and a TC 2Gen to cover the whole house. As I stated above, the ATV 3Gen is connected via Lan, and the other two via WLAN?
    Any idea what I've made wrong, or what to do to find the problem?
    Thanks in advance

    Until the MacBook Air was released and supported in 10.5, the Mac did not consider USB to be a valid Networking Protocol. So set the Mac with USB solutions aside.
    To connect computer-to-computer, you typically need to be using an Ethernet crossover cable. Assigning the same address to two Ethernet devices is never the solution -- it gives a Network Conflict, just as you said.
    If your Windows box has some mechanism for Sharing its WiFi connection over Ethernet, you would have to follow its rules. Whether that means Manually assigning an Ethernet Address in the same range or the PC will provide the Address, I do not know.
    Best success may be running an Ethernet cable to your Wired/Wireless Base Station, or using a "gaming adapter" (Ethernet-to-Wireless no drivers required) connected to the Mac's Ethernet port to give it WiFi access. What is your Base Station {Cable, DSL, FIOS, Other} ? Ethernet cables can be up to 100 meters (an American Football Field). Often the Base Station can be moved closer for more convenience.

  • The trouble with 'expression' -- how to edit that

    I just walked to the corner bodega ( even though its korean sooo bodega is misleading ).. to get some beer...
    ITS BEER THIRTY -- yipee !
    and on way back down the block where I live ( which is suburban ) some boy kid on a bike was riding and playing with a girl kid ( probably was his slightly older sister - these kids probably around 12 years old ) in front of a rental property with some spanish americans hanging out in their cemented yard on hammocks near bar b q...with their own kids...(they have planted another hopeful "veg garden" around the perimeter of their so called yard...tomato plants etc )...so anyway, the picture here is a "neighborhood" of sorts with a somewhat lower middle class family atmosphere in a fairly lower class area on the verge of becoming middle class ( with God's help ).
    And anyway, I passed by the boy kid on the bike and smiled at him cause he seemed to be a decent kid having fun with his friend ( they were sorta laughing about something and having fun before I showed up as the big "adult" and looked at me ). His smile back was like sunshine and true and he immediately recognized he could keep having fun with his friend and I wasn't a "threat" , but instead some sorta "neighbor".  She did the same more or less ( I think she had some devious design re: the game they were playing ... like " OK, you think you're so great on that bike, try to CHASE me ! " or something like that....kid stuff... and fun thank God.  This neighborhood has it's share of bad things going on in the streets at times.  And that leads to my focus on " The trouble with expression".
    A lot of people, like me for example, can't express themselves well in some ways. I didn't say , " Hi there kids !  What's new ? " when I met them on the way back from the bodega.  I didn't stop and ask what the heck they were laughing about.  Nor did I speak to the spanish people adjacent to the kids ...in their "yard" ...with the bar b q and hammock and obvious friday afternoon socializing they were into....
    We in nyc area are typically a mixed bag of races... I'm white, kids were african amer ( black but more like brownish if you ask me ), spanish people like mexicans IMO... who cares.  This is suburbia so you can imagine how more mixed it is in the city.
    Anyway, the reason I don't express myself so well in situations like that ( spontaneously on the street ) is cause I used to stutter real bad as a kid.. couldnt talk... so I clamed up. All my life I've been fighting that disability ( and other "challenges" re: learning, reading , writing, asthma , etc ) in terms of the "repercusions".  Kids like me make fun of me cause I stutter...I can't fight back verbally and lash out physically... become a "maniac".  Get kicked out of city schools etc...  Trouble maker.  Can't express myself, fight back with words....when kids are mean to me. After a while they dont matter much as if they are mean I just keep quiet and keep mouth shut and start "thinking" instead... how to keep on top of this person and not let things get crazy... meet the challenge.
    Turns out I'm not stupid and at some point my being " quiet" becomes a positive thing.. peers start asking my advice.. I'm suddenly a " deep thinker" in their eyes.  I go from being disabled ( stupid ) to being " a deep thinker" about the age of puberty... when nobody knows what they are doing anymore.
    I start thinking about expressing myself some other way than talking.. like maybe draw pictures... paint stuff, do things to have fun with people that doesnt put me in the " limelight".. where I have to talk etc.  More success follows this tendency to socialize and express myself... and I discover that chics like the strong silent type.
    ( I have been into gymnastics thru my fathers infactuation with it since age 2 -- which I think eventually ( inadvertantly ) " cured me " of many of my learning disabilities etc --  (talk to an OT about this and modern child development stuff to know what I mean here )
    Meanwhile I am very fond of dogs as my family has dogs one after the other and I am one of their best friends. I find I can communicate with dogs better than I can communicate with people sometimes.  This seems to be a problem in some cases with some people, but for me it never got crazy... where I " loved dogs " more than I " love people ".  I have never loved any dog more than any person and shudder when I think of those who do.  Those people who do have more problems than I ever had to deal with.
    And now, after all these years ( I am now 60 ), working on movies and tv stuff etc as a crew person with some college fine art schooling ( eventual photo major ) to get me started, I got into this " editing " stuff... A program I can actually " use " on my mousey computer introduces me to a more " final product " than I ever had access to before.
    BUT I don't shoot motion pic stuff, cant afford that - and never could before basically, and now I think about the triple threats and future of movies and tv as a business... as well as the tools ( in this case the editing programs in conjunction with the cameras ( arri, panavision etc ) ) and the desire to express something ...
    This has to be ( if you want an audience ) ... " tell a story ".  You could just put a camera on a rocket ( strap it to the rocket ) and shoot the takeoff etc and show that.. but you need a V.O. saying " well, I just shot off a rocket and this is what it looked like"...to bring the experience to the audience... or else IMO there is no story.
    Which leads to what's going on now in the world of reality tv, episodic tv , some big movies, etc.  Telling a story is more than showing you stuff that you just wouldnt have seen if you hadn't been there yourself. Telling a story is more like saying something that bridges the gap between your own experience of life and its challenges ( of being part of your neighborhood and making sense of your own childhood and being an adult now maybe ).. and what others also have gone through to get to the same conclusions....
    This is the object of " expression" IMO, whether you can talk about it, draw pictures about it, or make music about it...
    And the editing program is a tool to help do that.. it is not the end all or purpose of life or the " personal crusade" in the long run.
    It's one reason scary snakes often shock people out of their desire for comfort and predictable living... makes you think about that one serpent in the garden of eden you create for yourself .... and IMO who cares what editing program you use to write that and shoot it ??

    Steve Grisetti, the MOD of the Premiere Elements forum and co-founder of a video/photo/editing Web site, Muvipix, did a nice article, "Don't just make a movie - tell a story." His audience was more consumer video editors, than the folk that we see around here, but his points were well-made, and were embraced by many in the Muvipix community.
    I think that too many, forget that concept - and I am talking Hollywood and NYC here. It's almost as if, when the story breaks down, they instinctively know to throw in a car chase, or big explosion.
    I know that I cite it too often around The Lounge, but that was what I enjoyed most about the LOR trilogy. It told a story. Now, though I had some exposure to the story, when much younger, I have to admit that I never read Tolkien, though almost everyone, that I knew, was busy with every book. Still, I only knew some of the high points, and not much more. However, almost immediately, I was drawn into the story, and only wished that I did not have to wait so long between episodes. The FX were cool, and I am a technoid sort, but it was the story that hooked me. I had read several articles on the FX production, so WAS looking for some of that, but what I wanted was the story. This is one that I will buy the BD "Director's Cut" of, and do a marathon. I have seen each segment, maybe three times, but never back to back to back. I still need to fill in a few blanks, and an entire day of viewing should do that - no phone, no visitors, nothing but LOR.
    As far as human communications, I can talk, even more than I write here, but only concerning things that I care about. I am horrible at "small talk," and would rather addrss an auditorium of 10,000, on something that matters to me, than talk about the weather to a single person at a fund raiser. Not that long ago, I was seated next to a potential donor at a charity dinner. I was rather dreading it, and when she mentioned that she did not drink (what, no wine?), I was worried. At some point, early in the evening, the subject turned to politics. Now, I usually am very quiet on my feelings, as they are not exaclty politically correct, and worry about hurting feelings, or making a scene. I fielded a question on Senatorial candidates, and just decided to answer from my heart. Her eyes lit up, and I did not notice that the event had ended. Her husband was standing, as was my wife, and we were talking politics, talk-radio, FoxNews, Senator John Kyl, Will Rogers and much more. I found that we were kindred spirits. Finally, our spouses pulled us apart, and we departed. We continued that conversation at 2 - 3 more events during "the season." One day, my wife informed me that she had just given $10M to the foundation - the largest single gift ever. At least she wasn't a screaming liberal, as I would surely have really messed up the deal... However, had it all been small talk, I would have found a reason to excuse myself and hide in the bar for a few hours.
    Also, the way that our society has developed, I will smile, nod, and say "hello" to strangers on the street, but always leave it at that. I am sure that many walk past and think "he wasn't all that friendly." They are probably right, but at least I was pleasant to them and did not rob them! Heck, I will usually tell telemarketers, "No, but thank you for your generous offer on that time-share... "

  • I am currently having trouble with an attached PDF fill-able form created in Acrobat being non savable in Reader

    Hello, I was wondering if you would be able to help me out?
    I am having trouble with my attached PDF fill-able form, I am creating a form that has a limit of one page so in order for more room in a certain field I have added a Hyperlink to an additional fill-able(secondary) form within the Parent document (primary fill-able form. The secondary form is inserted as an attachment into the Primary form. My problem is when I open this document up in Adobe Reader, the Primary fill-able form is savable but the attached Secondary form for which the hyperlink leads to is non-savable and is a must print only. Is there a way to make the Secondary form savable as well within the same document? or is there another way I could execute what it is I am trying to achieve?
    Trying to save other as extended reader has not worked, also if I save the attachment file as an extended reader first I am unable to attach a return hyperlink back to the Parent document,
    Help would be greatly appreciated please and thank you!

    I can't say for certain without looking at the actual PDF but it does appear that they created one large text box over multiple lines. For a fillable form it may have been smarter to remove the lines and create a box with smaller text that supports multiple lines.
    At any rate, nothing you can do about it with the free Reader (and depending on the security, maybe nothing with Acrobat either.)

    Here is the code, thought I had put it in the first time, guess not heh. Anyway, I converted the arrayList(accountList) to a String so that I could see the that element I am trying to index is in there, which it is. I also checked the file that i'm populating the arrayList from and it also has the element in it.
    public static void getAccountNumbers() {
              accountList = LoadStoreAccounts.readCollectionObject();
              accountInfo = accountList.toString();
              JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, accountInfo);
              acctNumIndex = accountList.indexOf(accountNumber);
              acctIndex = String.valueOf(acctNumIndex);
              JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Index of accountNumber    is: " + acctIndex);

  • Trouble with first progråµ

    I'm having trouble with my simple calculator, which is similar to the calculator in "cocoa programming for dummies".
    http://public.me.com/schoolkid144
    its firstproject.zip
    The trouble is that when I get the value of the two text fields, it always returns 0 even when the value of both text fields is 1.

    Hi S-T Programmer, and welcome to the Dev Forums!
    The connections between the FuseBox outlets and the three text fields just need to be reversed in Interface Builder. An IBOutlet instance variable is associated with an Interface Builder object by Ctrl-Dragging from the object which owns the variable to the object the variable wants to reference. For example, to connect the FuseBox ivar named answerField to the text field which is to display the answer, Ctrl-Click on the FuseBox icon in the xib window then drag to the desired text field object. The text field object may either be found as an icon in the xib (Document) window, or as the full-scale drawing of the object in the IB Editor window (where you lay out the view). When you release the mouse at the end of the drag, a black list of all the FuseBox class outlets will pop up. Select the outlet you meant to connect (in this case answerField), and the connection will be made.
    The problem with giving IB instructions in the forum is that a picture is worth a thousand words, and this post is on the wrong side of that equation. So I'm hoping you'll be able to see enough of the picture from all these words. There are two other ways of making IB connections that are harder to use, but easier to explain:
    1) If you Ctrl-Click (without dragging) on any icon in the xib window, a floating, black panel will pop up showing every possible connection to that object. To make the same connection discussed above from the answerField outlet to the right-hand text field, Ctrl-Click on the FuseBox icon and find answerField in Outlet list. You can now drag directly from the connector symbol to the desired text field. This time there's no popup when you release the mouse because IB already knows which outlet is to be connected. After the connection is made, you can Ctrl-Click on the text field icon and see its connection panel. You'll know the connection is going in the right direction when the connection to the text field is listed under +Referencing Outlets+ and the connection back at the FuseBox object is listed under Outlets.
    The floating, black connection panels are especially useful for deleting connections. Since your project currently has three backwards connections, you can use these panels to delete those by clicking on the 'X' which is visible on each connection line.
    2) There's also a tab in the Inspector window for making connections. Select one of the objects you want to connect and select Tools>Connections Inspector from the top menu if you have trouble finding the tab. You can make connections in this window if you want, but you can also use the Connections Inspector to view the connections previously made by dragging.
    This topic is covered in more detail (including some screen shots! yay!!) under Creating and Managing Outlet and Action Connections in the +Interface Builder User Guide+.
    I think your connection between the Calculate button and the FuseBox was correct. This post has gotten so long I can't remember if I had to reverse that one too, but I don't think I did. Anyway you'll be able to check for yourself now that you know what to look for, right? The connection between an object's Sent Action and an IBAction method goes in the direction opposite to an IBOutlet connection. Thus to connect the Calculate button you need to drag from the button to the FuseBox.

    _Action to_ the FuseBox
    Hope that helps!
