Trouble with WRT54G2 Router DHCP

Thank you in advance for your help with this problem.
Setup:
I have four machines attached to a WRT54G2 router, which is serviced by a cable modem:
1) WinXP Sp2 - Wired and Wireless connection
2) Linksys Vonage VoIP adapter - Wired
3) iPhone - Wireless4) HP Printer - Wireless
I've had the WRT54G2 for about 3 months without any problems. Recently, my router is having problems assigning IP addresses. Every 10-12 hours, both connections on my XP machine will loose connectivity to the Internet, while the other machines will remain connected to the router and the Internet. For example, I've spoken on the VoIP phone and listened to streaming Internet audio on the iPhone while troubleshooting the IP address problem.
When I run ipconfig, it appears that the XP machine will look to renew its IP address and bypass the Router's DCHP service, receiving an IP from the ISP for the landline, but with incomplete information, leaving the machine unable to connect to the Internet. See the copied ipconfig text below. Rebooting the router fixes the problem, but I'd like to find a software setting on the router that will prevent this from happening and return it to normal DCHP operation.
The router is running under factory settings, except for my custom SSID and passwords.
I've tried cloning the MAC address, but when I do the ISP does not recognize the clone and does not assign an IP to the router.
I'd appreciate any advice from the experts on this forum.
Thank you,

All-
Thank you for your advice so far. I have reset the router to factory defaults and restored my security settings (new SSID, admin password and WPA security), but ran into the same problem both last night and this morning.
I believe the problem lies with how XP communicates with the DHCP server. When the problem occurred,  I attempted to connect a  second XP laptop to the router's wireless connection and found that both my primary XP machine and the second laptop had the same problem: the XP machines were bypassing my router and receiving IP address directly from my ISP. Below is a copy of ipconfig both with the problem, and after I rebooted the router.
Note that I've hard coded the DNS servers directly into my machine. Also, cloning my machine's address into the router doesn't work... it won't recieve an IP from the modem.

  • Trouble with WRT54G2

I bought a Linksys WRT54G2 Router in April 2010 (this year) from Newegg.com. It have been acting weird for a long time now and will disconnect me from the internet every so often. So I decided that would go and see if there were any firmware updates and see if that would fix the problem so I found a the firmware for it Ver.1.5.01 Build 13. I had a build that was a little lower, Build 10 I think. Anyway, I went ahead with the firmware upgrade. I left for 10 minutes. Came back. Not done. Left. Come back an hour later. Still not done. Left. checked it in the morning and it was still not done so I turned it off and rebooted it and now nothing works. I can ping the gateway but it will go throught a cycle of responding and not responding nor can I connect to the web interface. I now fear the worst. Is there anything that I can do ? Can i get it replaced?

If you are able to ping the router IP address then your computer is communicating with the router.
Unplug the power to the router and plug it back in. see if you can open the setup page of the router.
If it does not work then I think you can try to reset the router and reconfigure it.
Connect the computer to Ethernet port 1 on the router and modem to the Internet port on the router.
Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for a minute. Power cycle the router.
Try to ping the IP address of the router. Open the setup page of the router and reconfigure it manually.
While upgrading the firmware on your router, your computer should be connected to the router with the Ethernet cable.

  • Trouble with port forwarding, DHCP, VUZE, and downloading speed.

I am using Vuze to download things. I have a slow download speed and yellow smiley face, indicating a NAT problem. I think I need to implement a port forwarding, but that requires a static IP address. My router and security is set up such that I CANNOT connect to the internet using a manual configuration--DHCP only. However, I always have the same IP address. This is because the wireless router--a Motorola SB900--will only recognize approved computers designated by the IP address.
Can anyone advise on what to do next?

you are dealing with two networks. There is a network between your computer and your router. There is a second network between your router and your ISP.
Port-forwarding is from your router to your computer.

However, I always have the same IP address. This is because the wireless router--a Motorola SB900--will only recognize approved computers designated by the IP address.

You need to set Port-forwarding between your computer and your router. You will need a fixed IP address on a your Computer. There is to ways of doing this. You can set up a static IP address on your computer. A hack would be to add 10 or 20 to your IP address that your router gives out. For example if your router gives out 192.168.1.10 you of would add 10 to the ten giving 192.168.1.20. you need to make the addition to the right most number of which in the example is ten.
The section way is . . . You can have your router a signed a fixed address based on your MAC address. ( Each Internet device has a fixed address that is called the MAC address. This is a different address than your IP address. the MAC address is assigned in the factory. )
Another hack would be to Port-forward to the number your router assigned at random. If your Computer is the only computer on the router, the number should always be the same. It is a hack because this is not guaranteed.

  • Problem loading certain pages with WRT54G2 router

I recently had to password protect my wireless network (I live in the middle of nowhere and we got new neighbors who decided to leech off my internet), and since then have had trouble loading a handful of websites that I had previously been able to access. The websites also do not load on my mother's computer (same network) or on my phone (unless I use my cellular network and not my home's wifi). I have updated my router's firmware and reset it, but this has not fixed the issue. Could anyone help me with this?

Make sure the internet thru the router is working. What you can do is hardwired the pc to the router and check if you can open a website then access the router's interface again and double check the wireless settings, personalize if possible the SSID and the wireless channel (3,6,9,11), also for the wireless security use wpa2 personal/ TKIP. If internet wired to the router is not working, connect the pc straight to the modem for isolation.

  • For all those who have trouble with their router. STICCY THIS!

    1.) Clicc HERE
    (ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/)
and download the file named "tftp.exe".
2.) Clicc HERE and download YOUR, AND I REPEAT YOUR AND I MUST REPEAT AGAIN, YOUR ROUTER'S LATEST FIRMWARE. Please for the love a God, Allah, Jah, or whoever you look up to. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE RIGHT FIRMWARE. If you don't know what version or model router you have, look at your router's home page or you can actually look at your router with your eye. Voila! You now know your router's model/version. Download the lastest firmware for your router.
    -----------------------**IMPORTANT**------------------------------------------------*************-------------------------
It is strongly suggested that you remove all connections from your router except the one for the computer you are using! Not removing the other connections from the router can cause a corrupted firmware, and the dreaded flashing diag light.
3.) Double clicc on/open up the TFTP.exe file. Enter your password (admin if you haven't changed it), use the browse feature to find the (latest)firmware you just downloaded. Then, click on "upgrade". You should see a progress bar, then the message that you have successfully upgraded your router.

I have a WRT54G ver.6. It works perfectly with a windowns PC but not for my Mac. I have high signal but no internet. Do you know if this model is not compatible with Macs? thank you Simone

  • Need Help: Trouble with Wireless Router Connection on MBP

Hi all.  I just bought a MacBook Pro (my first Mac ever) and love, love, love it.  However, one glitch is driving me crazy.  I do *NOT* have an airport but I connect to my cable modem through my netgear wireless router.  When my MacBook Pro goes into sleep mode, I lose the connection to the wireless router.  I have to go unplug the router to reboot it for the MBP to see it again.  I think it has something to do with how it is assigning the IP address.  Has anyone else seen this issue?  Know how to solve it?  Thanks so much.

  • Trouble with a Linkysys Wireless-N Router WRT-160W After a black out

So like the subject says I am having trouble with the router. Last night there was a major storm in my town and the power and cable were out for hours. When it came back (it was only for about twenty minutes) the network was there but I was not able to connect to it from any of my computers. The desktop however that was hardlined to it works fine on the internet. I've tried restarting the modem the computers, and the router, pushing the reset buttons, even holding the reset button to the point it made the router act like its being used for the first time and creating a new network but I still can't connect to it. I only bot this router a couple of months ago so I'd hate to have to buy a new one.
    Any help would be appreciate.
    Thanks.

Are you using Cable connection or DSL connection ?
If you are using cable connection then follow this link and if you are using DSL connection then follow this link to configure your router. This should fix the issue for you.

  • Trouble with Exported .pdf Files

I created three 20"x30" one-page documents (with iPhoto-sourced images) which saved as 24.7 MB, 19.4 MB, and 10.7 MB files, respectively. I needed to send JPEG files to my service provider for high-resolution prints. Since Pages '08 doesn't have a JPEG-export option, I exported each of them as .pdf files. My plan was to open the .pdf files in Photoshop and save them down as .jpg files. The same path had worked fine with a fourth Pages '08 layout of a 2.25"x3.75" document. With the three 20"x30" files, however, I ran into trouble.
My laptop didn't have enough memory to open the exported .pdf files in Photoshop Elements without suffering some image gray-out. I didn't think that was a problem until we discovered that my service provider couldn't open the files at all (running the current Photoshop on a souped-up system). Arghhh.
I switched to a service provider who can print straight from the .pdf files, but that also brought trouble. Though I could open the files easily in Acrobat 5.0, and they looked great, the service provider (running the current full version of Acrobat) could not open them; all he got was what looked like a blank page.
I don't think the trouble is related to file size, as the business-card document which sailed through without trouble saved as an 11.2 MB Pages file.
Could it be sheet size? That's the only thing I can figure. And why would the files open in Acrobat 5.0 without trouble, but not in the current Acrobat (or Acrobat Professional, which we also tried)?
I ended up "printing" the Pages files as "Save PDF to iPhoto," then exporting the iPhoto image as a maximum-resolution JPEG. The only trouble with that route was that the best I could get was a 200 dpi. When I went through Photoshop (instead of iPhoto) with the business card file, I ended up with a 300 dpi file.
Am I missing something obvious here? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I don't know if this is the correct answer, but you can open a PDF in Preview and save the document as a JPEG and JPEG-2000. I know that Leopard will also have some neat functionality about this as well. You might also want to look at printing as a postscript file rather than a PDF and then open in Photoshop. I talked with a FEDEX/Kinkos employee yesterday about my book at he stated that Macs use 1.5 while Adobe's Acrobat is 1.7. Leopard should also fix this, but it may not help right now.

  • Trouble with my UPnP option

I am using a WRT54G wireless router.  The games I play are suddenly haveing trouble with my router, saying my NAT is restricted, and that I should enable my UPnP option in the administration tab of my router controls.  I got on fine, went to the tab, found the option, and it WAS already enabled.  So I disabled it, saved the changes, and enabled it agian, then saved the changes.  It is still giving me the same messages, and same trouble.  Anyone out there have a suggestion?

    Who is your ISP...?
Have you opened ports for the game on router...?
Which game you are trying to play..?
Are you playing the game on PC or on any Gamin Console..?

  • Problems With Linux Router

I have a RaspberryPi and I want to turn it into a router just for the hell of it. I've attempted this multiple times but always get stuck and say "screw it" since my roommates would bitch at me because they can't get on the internet. Now I live by myself and want to get it to work.
I've followed the Router page in the wiki but I only have internet access from the Pi itself. I had a few problems but I think I fixed them. My main problem now is that DHCP doesn't offer IP addresses. During bootup Arch tells me that it failed to start my private interface (eth0), while looking at the journal it says this because the interface is already up (don't know why) and it doesn't get an ip address. I would like to assign it a static address of 192.168.1.1 but I'm not sure how to do so.
If I set a static address for eth0 (my internal interface) and try to get an IP address from another computer it doesn't offer me one. If I set a static address on the other PC, I can ping the Pi from the PC and vice versa so I know that's good, but if I try to ping an external IP from the PC (such as Google's DNS server 8.8.8.8 which responds to pings) it gives me "destination host unreachable", yet I can ping it just fine from the Pi.
I'm using a Cisco E3200 router with Tomate by Shibby as a switch and WAP with the routing/DHCP/DNS features turned off. I don't believe that the E3200 is the problem.
Any suggestions on why this isn't working?

Thanks for the info, but I need to get DHCP working since I'm going to have a few other devices on the network that won't have static address (phones, tablets, friend's devices, etc...).

I was going to say that too, but I didn't want to poke the bear. My problems aren't really architecture dependent, they're just general networking problems.

  • Serious troubles with my WRT110 router

Hello! This problem all started when I upgraded the machine I'm typing this on to Windows 7 Ultimate.  No matter what I did, it would not connect to the existing network. I finally found a way to get it to connect by entering the router's PIN number, but it effectively created an entirely new network. My problem lies here. I can create new open networks just fine, but if I try to create an encrypted network it will not work -- the computer won't even detect the router. I need an encrypted network because I'm required by law to have one in my line of work, and I have no idea how to set it up. The network is comprised of this machine I'm using, a Macbook, and a TiVo DVR, as well as my laptop which is in for repairs. I might also add that I'm having trouble with the software that came with the router. Ideally, I'd have a secure network with an easily memorable password so other machines can join. I have spent many hours on this and I'm truly at a loss, and some step by step instructions would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    ~Eric
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. You should always access the web interface through a wired connection. Through a wireless link you may accidentally configure the router of your neighbor. And of course you should also never make changes on the wireless settings through a wireless link. Thus, always use a wired connection only for this purpose.
    2. It does not affect your network as it is. It only changes the router configuration. If you change the wireless configuration of the router it will, of course, affect all existing wireless links to the router (if any).
    3. You should not choose a "easily memorable password". That's always a bad idea. The wireless passphrase is usually only entered once on each wireless device to establish the connection to the router. The wireless device usually remembers the passphrase. Thus it is better to choose a very strong passphrase, e.g. a random generated longer passphrase. That is much more secure.

  • Problem with Linksys Router Model WRT110 Not Assigning IPs With DHCP?

    Hello,
I recently purchased this router (WRT110) to take the place of my old Belkin that was continually dropping connections (which was a real pain when trying to download stuff off the Internet).
However, I cannot get this router to assign IPs to wired or wireless computers. I spent around 2 hours talking to Linksys support technicians (two total) before they finally told me the router was defective.
So, I went back to the store and got an exchange. But, it's the same story with this router, the connections can't get past the "acquiring network address" stage in the connection process.
I would like to think that this has more to do with my ISP than the router, but if I set up a static IP on the wired computer I can connect to the Internet and the router through its default gateway. Setting up a static IP on the wireless computer doesn't seem to work, however. If the ISP was a problem, wouldn't the router not detect the Internet connection at all?
DHCP is definitely enabled on the router also.
My ISP is a small town owned company. I have a wireless broadband connection, which works similarly to satellite, only the connection is broadcast via a tower and is received with an outside antenna.
I still need to contact them about this, but I figured it could hurt to ask here and see some of your suggestions.
    Thank you!
    ~RJG

UPDATE: I contacted my ISP today and the technician I spoke with said he didn't know of any problems any routers would have with their wireless broadband. I tend to agree with him, as I've configured two routers previously using my connection and I've never had any difficulty until now. He suggested changing the ethernet cable and releasing/renewing my IP address, both of which I did but I continued to have the same issues.
But, after doing some more research I found some settings that actually allowed my wireless computer to connect. There was a post in these forums referring to modifying the MTU, changing it from Auto to Manual and changing the value to 1458 actually seemed to work, as well as strengthening the connection by changing the beacon interval. Anyway, I can connect wirelessly now.
Also, I connected my Linux computer (Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron) to the router and was able to connect instantly, no problems whatsoever. So, out of my three computers, two are connecting, but my wired Windows computer is still having issues. However, if I set a static IP for that computer, I can connect fine.
I'm thinking maybe there is something wrong with the NIC card in that computer, but how would one test something like that?
It doesn't make sense to me, I would really appreciate any input. Thank you!

  • Trouble with D-Link DI-524 wireless router

i have connected successfully to the internet with this router, but then when i turn my computer off, my airport card turns off and i cannot turn it back on , it is grayed out in the system preferences. i connect through verizon dsl. sometimes when i turn my computer on, the airport icon is on, sometimes it is off. i can't figure out how to turn it on consistently. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Phish, I must first declare I do not have that router. However, I've checked the on line specs of that router, and can tell you that you won't have any problem using it with your iBook.
Now, to get more specific, this router claims to be 802.11g standard compliant, the same standard the iBook uses. It is WEP and WPA compliant, both of wich work well with the iBook, however, the WPA is way more secure than WEP, and also is simpler to set (you don't need to guess any hexadecimal code, choose between several passphrases nor enter any special $ign before the password) on Macs.
Now, do not be fooled on thinking that you must install the ".exe" setup program on your ibook to make it work with your router. You mentioned you are already using the router, so you should only need to open the iBook, and, if your network is open (which I DO NOT RECOMMEND) your precious little white laptop will ask you if you want to connect to your network, that simple!
If you have WEP/WPA and the SSID broadcast on, then you'll need to enter the password, if you are not broadcasting the SSID (an even more secure setting), you'll need to enter the name of the network and the password. Unless you are filtering the MAC numbers to connect the network, you won't need to change ANYTHING to let your iBook to surf wirelessly.
There is also a way to configure the wireless network with your ibook, (with any browser) but I pressume you won't need it, as you already have the network installed.
Good luck and congratulations on your new acquisition!

  • Trouble with D-Link Router

I have been having all kinds of issues with a D-Link WIFI router in my house. I am having to reset it on a regular basis. But the funny thing is that my mom who uses Leopard is not having a problem in the world with it. The problems I am having is that I am unable to get a connection after a period of time (sometimes a day or two of usage).
The funny thing about all this is that at home in my house I use a D-Link router (another type) and have used the Apple airport base station and have had no problems at all. Why I am having problems with this router is beyond me. Our WiFI network is insecure (its okay as we live in the sticks). I am clueless. My only guess is a incompatibility between Snow Leopard and this particular D-Link router.

Then I obviously misunderstood your first post:

So, at this point, I'm confused as to whether you have a problem (or not); if so, you'd need to share some info about the model and whether it is "g" or "n" rated. If you're not having a problem, I don't understand your post.
