Troubleshooting kernel panics

I'm trying to come up with as many solutions as possible for troubleshooting kernel panics. Let me know what I'm missing!
Troubleshooting Kernel Panics in Mac OS X:
Kernel Panics in Mac OS X can be caused by many things, including:
Bad RAM
Outdated software, firmware, utilities anddrivers
Third party peripherals
Bad permissions
File system errors
In case of panics, first do some basic troubleshooting andisolation to hardware or software.
1)     Start in safe mode.
2)     Run Apple Hardware
3)     Make sure you have sufficient Ram and disk space
4)     Run Disk and Permissions repair
5)     Check kernel core dumps (advanced)
6)     Boot to install disk.
7)     Create bootable partition on external drive, install OS X and attempt to boot. If unable to boot, likely hardware.
Once you have isolated the issue to a software or hardwareissue, continue the appropriate troubleshooting:
Software Troubleshooting:
1)     Disable startup items and isolate if panicresolved
2)     Attempt to isolate to specific third-partysoftware
3)     Perform an archive and install of the OS
4)     Boot to clean install
5)     Run Software update
6)     Reinstall Third-party software
Hardware troubleshooting:
1)     Remove all peripherals and restart. Addperipherals one at a time, restarting after each until kernel panic occurs. Ifnone:
2)     Repeat with third-party RAM and hardware (if youdo not have the originally installed RAM, boot from external drive. If panicdoes not occur, RAM may need to be replaced).
If none of these steps fix the issue, service may be needed.

Kernel Panics in Mac OS X can be caused by many things, including:
Bad RAM
Yes.
Outdated software
If you mean applications and libraries, no.
firmware
Perhaps.
utilities
No.
drivers
Yes.
Third party peripherals
Some.
Bad permissions
No, with one exception: the launchd executable.
File system errors
Yes.
The first and usually the most helpful troubleshooting step is to analyze the panic log.

  • Need help troubleshooting Kernel panics

    Hi,
I have had two Kernel Panics in two days just now, and another one a few weeks ago. The logs don't help me as I am not familiar with the wording on the Mac side, and I cannot submit the error reports to Apple as it fails, probably because I run 10.5.8 and Apple discontinued suppoort for Leopard or something like that. I would need help trying to figure out from the error message whether it is likely hardware, software, network, etc.

Some additional information which might help:
MacBook,  2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM
The last two kernel panics happened just as I hit "send" in Thunderbird, so it may be related. I fail to understand how such a simple command would crash a computer though.

  • [SOLVED] Troubleshooting kernel panics since 3.4

All kernel versions since 3.4 have been absolutely unstable on my machine. A panic might happen right during bootup, or if it boots up, there will be random segfaults all over the place, followed by a panic no later than 20 minutes or so from bootup. I have been forced to use kernel 3.3.7-1-ck, which runs perfectly fine. I haven't done any particularly rigorous diagnostics of the problem because watching the system fail repeatedly is not very fun when I can just revert to a working setup. However, these are the observations I've come up with over the months:
    - a typical panic dump looks like this (although the "spurious ACK" like is new - in the few other screenshots I've got there is nothing prior to the hardware errors, or the first line is no longer on screen);
    - it happens with the same symptoms on LiveCDs - I've tried Arch 2012.10.06, Ubuntu 12.10 and Mint 14.1 disks, all panicking during bootup or shortly afterwards (Arch 2010.05 loads fine);
    - I've run Memtest overnight since the problems started and it came up clean;
    - as mentioned, kernel 3.3.7 works fine, as does Windows 7 that I double-boot with;
    - it is not GPU related - I previously had other problems with Radeon HD4850 and suspected it might be involved here, but the problem persists after a recent upgrade to GTX 650Ti;
    - going by my pacman.log, I've definitely tried using (and then reverted to 3.3.7) kernels 3.4.2-1, 3.4.3-1, 3.4.4-2, 3.5.2-1, 3.6.3-1, 3.7.1-3, 3.7.4-1 from repo-ck, as well as other versions from core repo that I can't reliably keep track of;
    - system info:
    Motherboard: Asus P5Q-E
    CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8400
    RAM: 5GB in 3 sticks (2+2+1)
GPU: GTX 650Ti (Radeon HD4850 until a few weeks ago)
Storage: 2 SATA HDDs, 1 SATA SSD
    IDE optical drive
    Sound card: Creatve Audigy LS
External devices: PS/2 keyboard, USB mouse, USB Wacom Bamboo tablet, USB external HDD
Any suggestions how to further investigate and/or solve this problem are welcome. I'll be happy to provide any other information that might be useful.
EDIT: blacklisting acpi-cpufreq module did the trick.

@the sad clown: all hardware that is normally connected to the PC is listed in the first post. Keyboard and mouse are both very generic and unremarkable, and disconnecting the tablet and external HDD has no effect.

First of all, it appears that 3.7.4 doesn't recognize CPU frequency right, showing 670 MHz instead of 3 GHz. Also, 3.7.4 has a "dtherm" flag instead of "dts". No idea what to make of it.
@mich41: thanks for the suggestion. I may try that later, when I have a bigger block of time to spare.

  • End All Kernel Panic Troubleshooting List

I have been tasked to put together an end all list to troubleshooting Kernel Panics. Please take a look at this list to verify if I missed any steps you would try.
I understand that there will be specific fixes to specific causes, and not all of these would be used in any one situation. Also not yet listed in specific or correct order that troubleshooting should be done.
Some list instructions on how to do the needed troubleshooting, some do not. This would be user specific, dependent on computer knowledge so I did not get into that yet.
    - Was a change just made, added ram, HD, card of any kind, software installed? Remove/uninstall and reboot.
    - Verify cables, connections and their proper installation and ensure that they are working properly.
    - Restart your computer.
    - Make sure that sufficient RAM and hard disk space is available for proper functioning of Mac.
    - Remove all peripherals down to monitor, keyboard and mouse.
    - Run Software Update.
    - System Scan with Tech Tool Deluxe.
    - Clean Cashes.
    - An incompatible login item could cause this symptom.
    - Selecting the "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications" option in Network preferences can sometimes cause this issue.
    - open-source tool 'Rember'.
    - Reset certain privileges.
    - Remove fonts folder (10.3.9 and earlier).
    - Uninstall Any KEXTs To check the KEXTs that are running on your system currently, type this command in Terminal (Applications >> Terminal) and hit enter:sudo kextstat.
    - If particular app, delete Plists.
    - Verify & Repair Permissions.
    - App specific: Delete and reinstall app.
    - Apple Hardware Test.
    - Run FSCK Start up holding command and 's' to boot in single user mode. Type the following exactly as this with the spaces fsck -fy and then press the return key reset-nvram then press return, set-defaults then press return, reset-all then press return.
    - Start computer by pressing power button then holding down the Shift key.
    - Hold down the X key and choose Apple menu > Restart. This may force the computer to start up using your Mac OS X system. If the computer starts up, release the X key. Choose Apple menu> System Preferences, and then click Startup Disk. Make sure that the disk containing Mac OS X is selected.
    - Restart and immediately hold down the Option key. When icons start to appear in the center of the screen, release the Option key. Select the disk that contains Mac OS X, and then click the forward arrow to continue starting up.
    - Boot from the Install DVD. Restart holding down the C, does it boot?
    - Reset PRAM. Start computer by pressing power button and hold down Command Option P and R buttons at same time and hold until you have heard the start chimes 3 times, then release all buttons and let it boot up.
    - Hardware Test. Use the DVD that came with computer and press the power button and immediately insert the DVD and once it goes in hold the D key down. When it boots up hit return and then select which Hardware test you want to run, probably a good idea to do the extended test even though it may take an hour to an hour and a half to run through.
    - Reinstall Mac OS.
    - Erase and Install Mac OS X.
    - Contact Apple Inc.

Why not instead visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Additionally Apple provides a number of articles about kernel panics:
About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages
    Kernel Panics on Startup
Mac OS X- "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts
Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic
Technical Note TN2063- Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
Tutorial - Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panic
    What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X)
You are just reinventing the wheel which is not really a good use of the forum.

  • Kernel panic problem, nothing will fix it

I've had about a dozen issues today with that gray screen telling me I need to restart my computer. I researched it and found out it's a kernel panic.
I called Apple Support and I was instructed to verify my hard drive and then fix it via Utilities after starting up from the OS disc. That didn't work.
I called back and another person told me to delete items in my startupitems folder under System. She also said if that didn't do the trick, which it didn't, I would have to Archive Install from the disc.
I Archive Installed and it took a while. The minute it was done and I was logging into my computer the kernel screen came back.
I have NO idea what to do. I can't even sign into my computer and have had troubles turning it on.
I bought the iBook G4 OS version 10.4.7 back in December; and I've never had problems with it.
What should I do? What can I do? There are files on there I need for school and work. Is there any way I can retrieve those then completely erase the OS and reinstall it?
If I can't figure something out I'm taking it to the Apple Store tomorrow. I've got extended Apple Care, so I shouldn't have to pay anything out of pocket, right?
    Thanks for any help.

When you reinstalled the system did you reformat the drive and write zeroes to it also?
Troubleshooting kernel panics is quite difficult. Most times they are hardware related. I would suggest you follow the steps in the following FAQ. Follow them in order and don't skip any.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
This is a roadmap that helps eliminate causes in a systematic manner. It is a time consuming process but a very thorough one.

  • Kernel Panic every time I put MB to sleep...

    Hello all,
I have a consistent kernel panic upon putting my computer to sleep. It doesn't matter if I do it through the Apple menu or by closing the machine. It's consistently telling me that it's the "kernel_task" is related to the panic.
    This is what I've tried:
    1. Uninstalled (manually) all the software I had recently installed (Concentrate, Evernote, growl. Removed logs and other traces they can leave, which is no small task to figure out in the case of Evernote!).
    3. Repaired disk permissions
    4. Reset SMC
    5. Deleted and reset the Energy Management preferences
My next thought was reinstalling SL but thought I'd see if you guys had any thoughts first.

So, it appears that your problem began relatively recently. I know that Growl has been a problem for others. Given that your problem began relatively recently, then reinstalling by erase and install could be a good alternative. Be sure you are well backed up. And, I would not be inclined to migrate my apps.

  • Kernel Panic iMac

Hey all, thanks in advance for being here. I've recently installed my Samsung 840 Evo on my iMac 21,5 " Late 2009 and then upgraded my RAM (Crucial one) from 4 GB to 8 GB (Crucial CT2C2G3S1067MCEU). I've started having problems since here, when my iMac goes standby, it suddently restart, giving me that error. What can it be?

    Hi, Robato.
    1. You already had another topic open here concerning your ongoing kernel panic problems. No need to start a second topic.
    2. The 0x600 (Alignment) panic is another issue related to memory access, indicating potential RAM, processor, programming, or other hardware errors. There's nothing particular in the Backtrace of each panic log to led more clues. See point 6 below.
    3. I recognize from your other topic that 20 loops of the AHT did not return a problem. I've seen it take as many as 40 loops some time, but 20 is a pretty good test if you looped the Extended Test.
    4. The log snippet you posted may not be relevant, especially since it happened 20 minutes before the panic.4.1. The first message
    Apr 15 19:31:17 My-Computer kernel[0]: hfs_relocate: didn't move into metadata zone
appears to deal with a problem encountered while attempting to perform Adaptive Hot File Clustering. Basically, Mac OS X attempts to automatically defragment small files (under 20MB) that are highly fragmented. The attempt failed because new allocation blocks could not be acquired, implying your disk may be getting near full. If your hard disk is nearing full, panics may result: see my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ.
A relatively recent listing of the source code from which that message is generated can be found here.
    4.2. The second message
    Apr 15 19:32:13 My-Computer kernel[0]: disk1: alignment error.
may not be referring to your startup disk, but a CD or DVD you had attempted to mount, or an external hard drive. Normally, references to your startup disk will be something like disk0s3, not disk1.
You can see the device number for each of your mounted volumes by issuing the
    df -a
command in Terminal.5. You wrote: "Verification of the HD with Disk Utility does not reveal any problem."If you're performing Live Verification, i.e. running Disk Utility > Verify Disk while started up from your startup disk, instead startup from your Tiger Install DVD and run Disk Utility from there, per my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
    6. None of my earlier advice has changed: you need to work through the troubleshooting steps "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. The FAQ is a roadmap, so follow the steps in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein. The other FAQs I've cited above in this post are some of the steps in the process of troubleshooting kernel panics.
Unfortunately, there's no magic bullet for the set of panic logs you've posted.
    Good luck!

  • I am getting these kernel panics

Out of nowhere. Just doing nothing, my MacBook now crashes and I have to hard reset it.
I enclosed the crash report, because I can't find the problem.
Also, I tried to wake the MacBook Pro the other time and it was just dead. After starting it up, the time was reset to 2001.

    Hi eww,
Thanks, but as it said, "If you have performed all of the troubleshooting steps specified above in the Troubleshooting kernel panics section of this FAQ, and the source of the kernel panics remains unidentified, then you can post recent panic logs to the appropriate forum on the Apple® Discussions for analysis"
So here I am again. I don't know how to read the above kernel panic report to see where the problem is.

  • Yep, Kernel Panic

started having issues a while back with the QuickTime update and went downhill since then. I have read and done all the X Lab stuff (quite helpful) including zeroed out data and reinstalled.
    How it happens usually:
I can be doing any activity and then I start to see artifacts on the screen (type discoloration, type running together, dotted lines across the whole screen, etc) it gets worse and worse until freeze and my favorite kernel panic window.
When I restart using command S and try a fsck -fy - it fails.
here are the last 3 logs- help please!

Hi, skoobs. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. Assuming you have done everything in my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ, including the first two steps in "If all else fails..." then you may want to have the machine serviced. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, I'd recommend taking it there. You may wish to call ahead to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.
    2. You wrote: "When I restart using command S and try a fsck -fy - it fails."Not good. The hard drive may be irrevocably corrupted or failing. Check the SMART diagnostics using Step 1 of my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. However, if you've followed my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ as you stated, you should have already done that.
    3. Your panic logs notes:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000A8E00): Uncorrectable machine check
An "uncorrectable machine check" panic generally indicates a RAM problem, low-level programming error, or other hardware issue such as a defective processor, logic board problem, or failing hard drive.
It can indicate a failing CPU, CPU 0 in this case, since the panics appear to keep occurring on the same processor. Rare, but it can happen.
    4. Other than taking another, thorough pass through the steps in my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ, from what you describe I suspect the machine needs to be serviced.
There are no magic bullets in troubleshooting kernel panics. Intermittent panics are even more difficult to troubleshoot since there's often no repeatable pattern to reproducing them.
    Good luck!

My iMac at work experiences kernel panics every so often when I'm not doing anything intensive. Usually happens once or twice a month. Here's the log, wondering if anyone has any details on what may fix it.

There are a couple of things to look at, first what is this com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver , that is where the KP seems to be starting so that may be a problem. Also check your RAM, KP's can be difficult to track down but frequent causes are related to RAM. These can be:
Failed RAM (yes it can fail)
    Incorrect RAM
Unseatted RAM, this needs to be removed and reseated.
I would also take a look at the Xlab's article on troubleshooting Kernel Panics.

  • Kernel Panic! not enough free disk space?

I was using my ibook earlier in the day and, after looking at the clock, hurridly closed it, dropped it on the bed (not from too high, something i do regularly) and ran out. Hours later, i came back and opened my computer to check my email and, alas, found a kernel panic alert box. I decided to do as it said and restart my computer. I did, but as soon as the finder had loaded, the screen darkened and the box appeared again. ANnoyed, I hit the power button, waited, and turned on the ibook again, this time holding the the keys necessary to restart the PRAM. No matter, it didn't work. I started looking it up in the support forums and, after being directed here realized that my KP problems were probably from the dangerously low HD space. I have been running anywhere between 2 gigs and 400 mbs the last few weeks, something i didn't see as a problem considering the big external drive I have, but there seems to not be enough space to boot my computer. Until i get home in a week (where my boot disks are) is there anything I can do to stop the panic?

When is the computer panicking? Does it boot up completely and then panic or does it panic during the startup cycle? If the latter where in the startup cycle does the panic occur?
Running so low on disk space can be extremely hazardous, particularly if the OS requires additional directory space in which case the directory can become corrupted beyond repair.
You can try starting up in single-user mode (restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until the computer boots to a black screen with white type) and attempt to repair the hard drive. At the prompt enter the following pressing return at the end of the command line:
    # /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a message after the repair that the Filesystem is OK, then re-run fsck -yf until you get an OK message. If you have to repeat fsck more than seven times and still do not get a Filesystem OK message, then the drive is not repairable with fsck. If you do get a Filesystem OK message then at the next prompt:
    # reboot

  • Kernel panics, apps won't launch

I am having terrible problems with Jaguar (10.2.8). I want to upgrade ot Tiger, but am asvised to make sure i have a healthy system to start with befor doing an archive and install. So I have been trying to resolve the following:
    1. I have a lot of kernel panics.
    2. None of the Apple utilities will launch, including Printer Setup Utility, Mail, Safari, Sherlock, Quicktime Player, System Preferences, Calculator,or TextEdit. iLife and other applications do launch.
I have tried everything I could find to clean this up:
I have run Disk utility and Disk First Aid, DiskWarrior, Yasu, MacJanitor. All disk permissions and directories now come up clean. The problems remain. Help!

For more info on troubleshooting kernel panics check on the FAQ at The XLab FAQs.
Open your Console app (Utilities folder), click on the Logs icon in the toolbar, locate the panic.log file in the sidebar list. Post the most recent panic log entries. If they all look the same, just post the last two.
Panics are most frequently caused by hardware problems - incompatible third-party hardware, bad RAM, corrupted hard drive. Since you have used Disk Warrior and Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and found no problems (BTW, did you check the SMART status displayed by Disk Utility?) then you may have other hardware related problems or a corrupted operating system.
If you want to solve the problem quickly then simply erase the hard drive and reinstall OS X from scratch. If the panic problems persist, then you very likely have a hardware problem to contend with.

  • Kext causing kernel panic? Need help troubleshooting, please.

    Hello all,
I'm a new face here and have been fortunate enough to never really need support, however at this point, I'm completely lost. First of all I want to apologize if my English is bad, Swedish is my native language.
    My specs:
    MBP 5,1 (late 2008) 15.4"
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,53 GHz
    Memory: Apple native 4GB
    Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B05
System Version: Mac OS X 10.7.2 (11C74) Lion
    Kernel Version: Darwin 11.2.0
    SATA HDD: ST9250410AS Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 250GB
I have a very annoying problem that I dont know how to solve. When I try to boot my MBP normally I get kernel panic before getting to the login-screen. The kernel panic occurs 1-2 minutes into loading while the gray Apple-logo still is on screen.
Booting in safe mode works just fine (wifi, wired network and other critical os x functions works - While gfx-, audio-, spotlight-, etc. kexts are disabled). This problem occurred a few months ago while using the MBP normally (e.g. browsing the web). Since then I have done the following troubleshooting:
    1. Switched to other HDD:s with both Snow Leopard-/Lion set-ups (fresh installs, same kernel panic)
    2. Tried to reinstall from USB (same kernel panic)
    3. Zapped PRAM
My thoughts: Some non-essential component in my MBP is malfunctioning, but since it works just fine in safe boot mode I figure that if I disable/remove the right kext(s) it should boot up fine in normal mode as well? (without the functionality of the component(s) that is disabled)
Im having a hard time to localize the origin of the error since I dont have any experience of interpreting Mac kernel logs.
Maybe you guys have any answers? Ill be eternally thankful for any thought, advice och help I can get!
I have recorded logs from two different crashes:
    Kernel panic #1

Thank you for your quick reply!
However I cant manage to find the panic logs in the library/logs/ or any of its directorys. Ive looked for this logs before and my guess is that they dont get created if the panic occurs during boot.

  • Recurring Kernel Panic... troubleshoot not helping

My Computer is a mid 2009 Macbook Pro.
    running OS X 10.7.5
I looked through the questions eariler this week, because i had no clue what was happening to my computer. by looking through these posts i found it was a Kernel Panic... i have NO idea what that means...
but i looked through the steppes to figure out why/what is causing it and ran the troubleshoot viariation for finding an issue with the software, because it mainly seemed to happen when i was using Firefox in combination with Minecraft, however i couldnt get the problem to start after a few tests i determined that it was mainly because of the requirements Minecraft was putting on my system.
so i said fine, no more minecraft. well it seemed to fix it for a few days however here we are again... the issue is back. and worse. now it seems to happen a consistant 20-40 minutes after i reboot my computer and get it running again... every time.
my system of course asks to send a report after it happens each time and i do... but i'm not really sure that actually DOES anything... seeing as i've been reporting it and jack-**** has come back to me on it.
    other info about my Mac:
the harddrive was failing shortly before it was supposed to go out of warranty, but i caught it in time and it was replaced last summer for free. the battery was failing as well and was also replaced. both of these changes was done in the Macbook store in Northbrook, Illinois.
I recently (pretty much a week before this all started happening) upgraded my RAM from 4gigs to 8 because i'll be running AUTOCAD when i get back to school in 4 days. and 4 clearly would not have worked for that software.  believe me i am thinking this does have something to do with my computer having issues because my father made the change instead of letting a Macbook proffessional do it for us...
my computer most likely is OUT OF WARRANTY unless the store put it back under after replacing the HD and battery this summer.
so i'll post the report details below and hopefully someone here can help me figure out whats really going on. I need my computer up and running fast before school starts because i'll be working 3shows and taking 18 credits of courses, not to mention  i'll be running CAD constantly once classes begin. so if you can help PLEASE do
