Troublie with File Sharing and Other Activities between two Macs

Here's my situation. I have two Macs... a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro, both running OS X 10.5.7. They connect to the Internet wirelessly through an Apple Airport Extreme (N) Base Station. But I also have them connected to each other via Ethernet. AppleTalk is turned on, only on the Ethernet connection.
My problem is that I want to curtail all computer-to-computer communications (file sharing, Airfoil speaker connections for playing iTunes, Chronosync file synchronization, etc.) so that they ONLY occur over the Ethernet connection.
I have both computers setup so that "Ethernet" is first in the sort order for network connections. File Sharing is turned on on both computers.
But... I can tell that, sometimes, the connection between the two computers is occurring over the WiFi instead of through the Ethernet (for instance, I disconnect from the WiFi on the Mac Pro and the music playing through AirFoil stops... or Chronosync can't connect to the laptop to perform a sync).
Am I just up a creek? Or is there some way to ensure that the two computers only "see" each other over the Ethernet connection and not over the shared WiFi? I know that, with "N" speeds on the Airport Extreme (and with N-capable cards in both computers), the "speed" thing isn't that big of a deal. But when running a Chronosync synchronization where several GBs of shared files are being synched, it still puts a crimp in Internet browsing speeds, etc., if that data is going over the WiFi instead of the Ethernet.
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm not certain of this but whilst you're waiting for a more informed response here goes. OSX uses something called the "default route" which prefers the one with internet access over the order of networks you set in preferences, therefore, the default route isn't necessarily the fastest route. Without editing configuration files or using hardware or software to hard code routing routines, you'll need to switch off Airport and hence the default route will become the network created automatically by your ethernet connected Macs. Apple Talk isn't necessary.

  • Trouble with File Sharing

    Hi,
In April I upgraded my old Core Duo MBP to a shiny new Core i7 MBP. From the get go I have had problems on and off with Apple File Sharing and Screen Sharing over my network. I have a Mac Mini hooked into my entertainment center used as a HTPC and I generally had controlled it via the laptop screen sharing over the network.
When I received the i7 I began to notice issues, the machines would randomly not connect. The Mini would still show up in the sidebar of finder windows, but would hang on "Connecting..." for a minute or so and then report "Connection Failed." Attempting to share the screen would give the same result, telling me to check both my network connection as well as the sharing settings on the Mini. I know the Mini is configured correctly, as I can have my old Core Duo laptop right next to the i7 and it will connect perfectly.
system.log reports this if that helps"

("Sven" being the name of the i7 laptop)
I have also noticed that nether the Mini nor the Core Duo laptop can connect back to the i7, even though I have verified the settings in the i7 as having both File Sharing and Screen sharing on. Rebooting the i7 does not seem to help, however seemingly at random it will start working again at a later time. Sometimes it works flawlessly and others it does not. Earlier today I was having no problem watching a DVD on the Mini, I left and closed the i7's lid putting it to sleep, to come back later to it being unable to connect.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
(Afterthought: I am still using 10.6.3 on the laptops because I also use them with Steam for gaming and according to Steam they at this time do not recommend upgrading due to some problem with the graphics cards and 10.6.4?)

Update: It also appears that the computer no longer wants to recognize the printer that connects to my WiFi network either (I printed several pages just earlier today, now it keeps telling me there is a communication error with the printer). Internet still works fine, but it seems any form of communication with other devices via my home network is off limits.

  • Need help with File Sharing and iPHOTO Library sharing........

I recently upgraded my imac and my macbook pro to Mavericks.
    I have some problems now.
Previously using iPHOTO when running I was able to see the other computers iphoto library on the left side bar.  I was able then to access the other computers iphoto library.  This is no longer showing the other computers library from either computer.
When I try to access the other computers files using file sharing I get a message that permisions are missing.
It then asks if I want to fix permisions ,  I say yes....it will run for an hour and do nothing...I need to force quit.
I really dont want to use the cloud to do this sharing....why should I upload into the internet when I have the computers on same network.
Is there any place I can go to find how this is now done?  Before I didnt need to look up a thing....was just intuitive .  Now Im running into walls every way I try to share the iphoto libraries across computers.

The iPhoto sharing that was in the previous version doesn't seem to exist. There is now iCloud Photo Sharing.

I don't know about the file sharing issue.

  • Sharing external FireWire drive between two Mac Pros

I know that sharing an external FireWire drive between two machines (i.e. both connected at the same time) is a very bad things as both will assume that they have exclusive write access to the drive and quite quickly write over what the other machine has just written.
Would it be possible though to mount the drive as read-only on the first machine and in read-write mode on the second? Would this preserve integrity as the second machine would in fact have exclusive write access or would other problems arise?
Thanks for any responses to a stupid question!
    Peter

Mmm, Connect the drive to the private secure network Mac. Connect the two Macs by FireWire and create a network over the firewire connection, configure it to use class C addresses, ie. 169.x.x.x manually and then share the firewire drive to the other Mac (also on a class C network address over firewire).
Both macs will still have their own ethernet network addresses and each network will not be visible from the "other" network (unless you choose to share your internet connection over firewire).
The only caveat here is that the firewire drive will be visible to every other Mac on the secure network that you allow to connect to it (which is why I chose that one, rather than the public Mac). Or can you restrict sharing to only one network ..... didn't think so.

  • Can I Share/Sync my iCal (and Address Book) between two Macs?

I have my Address book and iCal on a MacBook.
I also have a MacMini on my desktop.
Is there some way that I import the MacBook Addresses and iCal into the Mini - AND synchronize them so that when one is changed, the other also changes?
Does this require a .Mac account or is there some way to do it just across my network?
    Thanks,
    --PS

You might be interested in Address Book Server (http://www.addressbookserver.com). It allows you to sync either the entire Address Book or selected groups between several macs on the same network or over the internet.

  • Troubles with File sharing on Mac Mini Server

    Hi
Experience crash behavior of 10.6 server on my Mac Mini with DataBox connected containing all kind of data, except the system software which is installed on the internal hard drive. All my shared volumes, about 10, generating more or less regular (about every 30 minutes) the server preferences to crash.
The two entries in the console log are always to same for all shared volumes I have:
19.02.10 00:07:18 Server Preferences53715 XSActionManager: Removing queued action (Zugriffsrechte lesen) due to coalescing (readSettingspath/Volumes/DataBox 2/Dumy)
19.02.10 00:07:18 Server Preferences53715 The shared folder 'Dumy' has custom file system ACLs which cannot be displayed. Editing the permissions may replace any custom ACLs.
Once a day, the console log shows for all services running on the server:
19.02.10 05:37:17 Server Preferences53715 Error: The server 'Dumy.com' reported an error while processing a command of type: 'readSettings' in plug-in: 'servermgr_accounts'. Error: Error Domain=XSActionErrorDomain Code=408 UserInfo=0x107e2c650 "A network error occurred"
Did anybody have a good idea how to overcome this and how to decode the "UserInfo=0x107e2c650"
    Thanks for taking care.

If I understand your question correctly, is there a reason you've replaced the integrated MySQL within Mac OS X Server with a second MySQL database implementation? (That's almost inherently going to get tangled; you'll need to shut off the default implementation.)
Or is this a Perl module you've loaded and that is now tipping over? If you haven't replaced MySQL here, then have you started MySQL and run some tests with the database itself? This to make sure MySQL is operational, and that the problem you're working on is in the Perl pieces and not in the MySQL layer?

  • Dates of file creation and other activities

I purchased my computer in early February of 2006 with system 10.4 installed. I set the date and time using preferences. Since that time all my file creation dates seen in Finder window "Preview" are given as 2006/01/05 (international standard format). However if I hit the "More info" button the correct dates are given on the detail panel and also the correct times of the occurrences.
ITunes shows the dates of last playing in the incorrect way also on its index page.
Where does the incorrect date originate and how can I get it to agree with the date set on the computer?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you're using some flavor of Windows, then the attached VI can grab the file creation date, along with some other usful file info. All the info is returned as strings so it's easy to use as you need.
This is saved in ver 6.0.2, but it upgrades OK.

  • File sharing doesn't work between two computers

I have a Macbook Air bought late 2009 (I'll call it MBA 1). OS 10.6.0.
I have a new Macbook Air bought a few days ago (I'll call it MBA 2). OS 10.6.4.
I have been attempting to share files from the two computers.
I was able to move files from MBA 1 to MBA 2 without too much fuss. I could do it both ways: by finding "Shared" in Finder and then accessing the files or I could go to "Go" and "Connect to Server". I was able to add the username of the MBA 2 to the list of users in the Sharing pane of the MBA 1.
So going from MBA 1 ---> MBA 2 is fine.
However going from MBA 2 ----> MBA 1 doesn't work.
    1) The finder in the MBA 1 doesn't show "Shared".
    2) I can't add user to the Sharing pane of the MBA 2.
The problem could be that the two usernames of the MBA 1 and the MBA 2 are very similar.
    Username of MBA 1: jk
    Username of MBA 2: J K
I tested this theory out by adding a username I just made up called "Jack" and it added the username fine to the list of users.
But it's too late to change the username of the computers now.
    What can I do?

    I got it to work.
What I did was on MBA 2, I went to "Go" and "Connect to server". Then I selected the MBA 1 to connect to.
As soon as I did that, "Shared" appeared in Finder with the MBA 2's name on it.
After connecting which took a long time, the folders to be shared showed up in the Finder window.
I don't know why trying to connect to MBA 2's server didn't work in MBA 1. I went to "Go" and "Connect to server" many times on the MBA 1 but it didn't work.

  • Sharing a hard drive between two Macs with Time Machine

can I use the same hard drive to back up two different Macs with Time machine? I'm ok with hot swapping the cables.

Yes, but TM, Leopard and external drives are not OK with hot-swapping. Never unplug a drive without properly ejecting it first.
Each computer will have it's own backup folder on the drive and each computer will recognize its own backup folder. There is no limit other than HD space on how many computers can be backed up on an external drive.

  • ITunes locks up when Home Sharing is turned on between two macs

Ok normally On these discussions people ask a question hoping for the answer to fix their problem. Well I'm going to post a question and give the answer all in one post since I figured out.
When I would open up iTunes on my second mac hoping to share or import some music itunes would lock up that computer. When Home Sharing was turned off on both computers iTunes would work fine on either machine. This really baffled me until I remembered I recently change my Apple ID password. While I had changed it on one computer I hadn't changed it on the other. When I changed the password on both machines vola, Home Sharing worked without locking up the computer.

the computers firewall needs to be set not to block it
the wifi router needs to allow the ports required for the various apple services
you can find out which ports here

  • Sharing imovie 08 projects between two macs

Hi, can anyone advise what is the best way to see an imovie created in imovie 08 on my iMac on my MacBookPro. It seems weird that I can't share my movies on my two computers, only on ipods or on a tv

I believe there is a way. I came across it some time ago but forgot to bookmark the instructions and of course I can't find it anywhere now I need it!!! I want to use it to back up my finished projects but still have the option to edit if I want in future.
I know this doesn't help but I remember there being an option to export project and all raw footage to take with you.
Hopefully someone will tell us the answer.

  • Sharing the same data on two macs

Hello, I have two Macs and would like to keep the same data on each laptop. I don't think iSync is the tool for the job. Can anybody out there advise of an easy affordable method of ensuring both my machines are sharing the same data; itunes, photo's, files, etc.
    Many thanks.

  • Any issues with file sharing between Windows and latest Mac client?

We're running Lync 2013. My Windows client is 15.0.4551.1005. Mac client is version 14.0.8.
I open a conversation with a coworker on his Mac. I then try to share a png file. He clicks accept but then my client says the attempt timed out, and his client says that I canceled the file transfer. The coworker then boots the Mac into Windows and we try
again, and the file share works fine. When I jump on my Mac, I can send files to his Mac without issue. When he tries to send from his Mac to my PC it fails, but when he tries to send from Windows on his Mac to my PC, it works.
I can't find anything specific in the logs that would indicate a firewall issue. Is there a bug with file sharing between the Mac and PC clients?
    Thanks,
    Matt

No, There isn't a bug with file sharing between Mac and Pc client.

  • Windows 8.1 ICS with file sharing between computers

Can someone help me get ICS working with file sharing between two computers (directly connected), without enabling file sharing on the internet network (on a public untrusted network)?  Is this possible?  I have set up ICS between two Windows 8.1
machines, but i can only get file sharing to work in one direction (from machine B to machine A)... UNLESS I turn on file sharing/discovery with the entire network from machine A (which i do not want to do).  I am not sure this exact question has been
asked, so my apologies if it has.
    Here is my configuration.
Machine A: win 8.1 (up to date), two NICs:  a wireless card (connected to internet) and a gigabit NIC (connected to machine B)
Machine B: win 8.1 (up to date), one NIC, a gigabit card connected to machine A
    What i did:
On Machine A:  I enabled ICS on machine A's wireless card, which automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.137.1 to the second NIC
On Machine B:DHCP was enabled so it automatically got an ip address (192.168.137.62), internet sharing works fine (i can open a browser, get email, etc.)
On Machine B: I enabled "Find devices and content" on the network device
On Machine A: Going into "view network settings" it lists my wireless network and the gigabit NIC.  The wireless under 'Wi-Fi' says 'Connected', and i can click on this and I have the option to turn on "Find devices and content".
On the wifi connection, i leave 'Find devices and content' turned OFF (so i don't discover computers on the wireless network, which is a public network).  My gigabit NIC shows up as "unidentified network"/"Limited".
When i click on the gigabit NIC, it does NOT give me an option to turn on "Find devices and content", it just shows some properties of the NIC (manufacturer, description, driver, mac address) and button that says "Copy".  On
the gigabit connection's properties (which is listed as "unidentified network/limited"), the option for 'Find devices and content' is missing.
On Machine A: I open a file browser and type '\\192.168.137.62' and it works correctly, i can see the computer and move files around.
On Machine B: It doesn't work.  I open a file browser and type in "\\192.168.137.1", and nothing happens.
If i enable 'Find devices and content' on machine A's wifi connection, everything works, but now everyone on the public network can see my computer.
Question:  How can i enable file sharing between machine A and machine B ONLY?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

The whole point of public networks is that they are unsafe, so file sharing is not permitted for your protection.
If you have a network which you know is safe, the way to get file sharing working is to change your security policy so that it is set to private, not public. You do this from the local security policy (on the ICS computer).

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege
