Trying to choose a method for wireless access (non-Safari question)

This isn't a Safari question, but I think plenty of Safari users would hopefully know an answer to it....and I'm not sure where else to ask:
I'd like to be able to access Wi-Fi when I'm travelling-- which isn't very often, so I'm not keen on spending $1000+ on a laptop if all I'm using it for is to surf the net and check email.
I'm thinking a PSP or similar gaming device would be a solution.....and entertain me as well. What other non-laptop products would give me Wi-Fi access?
Thanks for any help!

You want a PDA or perhaps a cellphone. I don't see any Apple connection. You'd probably be better off searching Google.

  • Trying to upgrade Thinkpad X20 for wireless capability - HELP!

Hi, guys...I have an "old" IBM Thinkpad X20 that I'm trying to get a Wireless connection for.  I currently have Qwest Internet with my regular PC, and their Modem comes with a wireless attachment.  The USB-plugin wireless connector does work...I tried it on another PC I own.  I don't believe there's anything to load (drivers, etc)...just plug the USB Device in and that's all it takes.
I thought that until I decided to try it on the Thinkpad.  It seems to know the device is hooked up...but there's no recognition that's it's a wireless connector.  I'm missing something...and I think it might be that I need an IBM ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wireless LAN PCI Express Mini Card...or something like that?  Right now, the only thing on the laptop is a 3Com 10/100 mini PCI Ethernet Adapter.
I'm dumb as a stump when it comes to laptops...any help you can throw my way would be appreciated!  And right now the OS is Windows 2000, but I'll probably try upgrading that at a later date...
    Thanks!!!!!
    Spaz23

    > The Modem is an Actiontec M1000 (through Qwest), and the Wireless Adapter is the W1000 (plugs in to the top of the Modem).
It looks to me like the M1000 doesn't have native wireless capability and that the W1000 plugs into the modem in order to provide it as an access point. However your X20 doesn't have a built-inWiFi adapter. You will need to get one, either that plugs into a USB port or into a PCMCIA port. These are available inexpensively at computer stores or on eBay. Older is better to ensure that they should come with a Win2k driver. (The reason your other notebook works with WiFi is probably because newer notebooks almost always come with built-in WiFi support.)
I found the following links on Quest's website that contain lots of information on how to configure your modem and wireless adapters.

  • Need a good NAS drive for wireless access to my multi-media

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I have a large collection of music, video and photo files that I want to get off my laptop and onto a network drive that can be accessed wirelessly by other macs, and my xbox. Streaming ability and speed are the main priorities. Any help and suggestions for a good setup would be appreciated!
My current network setup is as follows:
    • Airport Extreme Base station directly connected to a cable modem
    • Network extended by another AEBS w/ a network printer connected via USB
    • Network extended by an Airport Express w/ a Skype phone connected via ethernet

Thanks, but it doesn't work. The device gets an IP just fine but it does not do any DHCP relaying. Even when I manually set my laptop to a LAN IP and connect it to a wired port it is unable to get to the internet. The documentation doesn't mention much about setting up a DHCP relay. Any additional help would be much appreciated.

  • Trying to update payment method for VDS

I'm hoping someone here can help.   I have kept my verizon.net email by signing up for the Verizon Domain Service last year.   Since then the credit card I used to sign up has been cancelled (thank you hackers), and now  I'm getting e-mails saying the Payment method is invalid.   Makes sense.   However when I use the link provided in the e-mail, it takes me to the manage my payment methods, but it says I have no payment methods, and does not give me a method to add a new payment method... I have gone round and round with Verizon, and nobody can seem to help.  I've spent hours on the phone with them.  I don't want to lose my verizon.net email.  Please help....   ThanksJoe

OK - I'm getting closer to resolution of my problem associated with credit card info updating to retain my email address (keepmyemail.com) after switching phone providers. FYI: back in Oct 2014 - I opted to "keepmyemail.com" - then my credit card info changed in Feb 2015 - and then Verizon sent me an email stating that my credit card info had changed and provided directions on how to update my credit card info. When I attempted to "Manage" the info - I received  this message: "You currently don't have any payment methods to update at this time". I swear I conversed with every department within Verizon several times spending many hours on the subject.  In my opinion there is little if any communications between departments. I also sent detailed emails to both support and billing @domains.verizon.net - to no avail. I also tried their "phone tree" (automated operator) associated with "your domain services" {edited for privacy} - which is  worthless. When you get to option # 5 associated with payment and renewal - you are told to "call customer service" who doesn't know how to deal with it. Finally, I found someone at their e-center (web-support) who knew this problem exists within Verizon. She told me they had a rash of similar problems in summer 2014 on into fall and that not so many problems were happening now. Their phone number is {edited for privacy}. I was told they can fix this problem - but takes several days - and they will get back to me. The reason this problems exists is due to some processing/programming problem Verizon has yet to fix. Somehow your account gets closed and crap begins to happen. Unless Verizon gets to the root cause of the problem - every time your credit card info needs to be updated - you may encounter a problem as I did along with many others. Verizon need to pin point and correct their programming problem, fix their phone tree associated with "your domain services", and educate their customer service department and their web-support department re said subject.

  • Open Authentication for Wireless Access

    Hello,
The standalone implementation of an existing wireless network is configured as Open Authentication with a TKIP Cipher. The client key management is set to WPA PSK.
What exacly is the authentication for? I see that MAC and EAP are available options. Would these options be used to block or authorize the actual wireless devices that connect to the AP?
The next thing I see is Client Authenticated Key management and I am using WPA PSK. What exactly happens once I enter thsi PSK from the client? Is it only used to encrypt the data?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
Using WPA we can configure  either Enterprise or pre shared key.. Enterprise comprises of EAP and pre shared key is just the PSK..
if we are using EAP then auth will be done by the RADIUS and the encryotion will still be TKIP.. now coming back to PSK, this is shared key which will authenticate the users locally...
EAP is more secured auth compared to PSK..
Now regarding the "auth open" line.. see there are 2 kinds of auth in 802.11.. here while using wireless we need to auth twice, dot11 authentication and followed by the psk or EAP auth.. the auth open statement will force us to get the dot11 auth successful and then we move towards needed auth like PSK or EAP.. and another is Shared auth is very similar to WEP using open auth!!
in the nut shel we have 3 kinds of auth..
    1> open - Dot11 auth
2> Shared - Nothing but WEP
    3> 802.1X suite - EAP
again, the below link may give you some insights as well!!

  • Am trying to download Calibre software for EBook management. Safari says can't download file. Why? How to fix?

I am trying to download E-Book management software (Calibre) on to my IPAD but Safari says download failed as Safari cannot download this file. Why is this.  I would have thought this was a fairly straight forward procedure?

If you are talking about Calibre, there is no iOS version.  There's an OSX version for Mac computers which are not the same as iPads.  Any and all software that can run on the iPad can only be installed from the App Store.
You cannot download anything thorugh Safari and try to install it, it just doesn't work that way.
Addiionally as has been already been pointed out Calibre installs on your Computer, not the iPad. You manage ebooks on the Computer.

  • What's an effective method for getting replies to your questions?

Hey guys so hopefully I get a response to this cause recently this has been bugging me a lot.
I've been making topics on here over a period of about a year or so and almost none of them i've been getting replies and I know most of these questions are problems that i Know professionals like yourselves can answer. So my question is what am I doing wrong? Is it that no one knows? Am I too vague or too specific? Is it cause I made it confusing? Let me know if you can. Thanks a lot!!
If you want a sample of what I mean, here's a couple links if you need one to give me a good answer:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2451877&tstart=0

In your sample post you write:
it says "Attempting to copy the disk "Ipod" failed. You do not have the privilages to make the chanages."
Then right behind it it says "The ipod cannot by synced. You do not have enough privilages for this opperation"
Now i've read up on this already on many sites...
Potential respondents are more likely to also read up on the problem if you quote the error messages accurately — then they can do a quick copy & paste into Google. But with "privileges" misspelt twice and "be", "changes" and "operation" all misspelt, potential respondents have to do a lot of editing before looking up those error messages. Note that in Compose mode you can click on this symbol to activate the spell checker:
You also write "Ipod/ipod" instead of "iPod". You may not think this makes much difference, but Apple apparently does as they consistently refer to their product as "iPod".

    So where's the +*other link*+ of the +"couple links"?!+
Your +Public Profile+ indicates you're using Mac OS X (10.6.2) — is that true? (The current version is 10.6.3.)

  • Wireless Access Outside the US

Hi. I am a US resident traveling to the UK with my PowerBook G4. It is equipped with an airport card for wireless access. Stupid question, but will I be able to connect wirelessly (i.e. with no special adapters, etc.) in any UK hotspot, just as I would in the US?
    Tiffany

Doing the same with a MacBook, and also curious about any special network settings or anything I should be aware of in order to pick up internet access while in England.
Still working out the details so I am not sure if wired access will be provided, or if I will need to look for a hotspot or two in the area.

  • Wireless Access Points - Time Capsule and Netgear

Ok...Netgear support site was completely useless so I am hoping that someone over here can help me out. I think what I am trying to do is relatively simple but for 3 days now I have gotten no-joy.
Here is my current configuration: Westell DSL Modem (wireless disabled) --wired-- Netgear WNR834B (SSID 1, operating b/g mode) --wired-- Time Capsule (SSID 2, operating n mode, connection sharing Off Bridge mode). All other devices are hanging off wirelessly to one of the two routers.
What I am trying to do is add a wireless Access Point (Netgear WN802T) to the picture. I need better coverage on the other side of the house and don't want to run wires. The WNR834B is WDS compatible but I can't figure out how to put it into repeater mode or bridge mode. So I thought my next best bet (before going out and buying even more hardware) would be to try and extend the TIme Capsule network. I have been unsuccessful so far (SSIDs are the same, channels are the same, WEP set because I read somewhere that WPA was not supported in repeater/bridge mode). Is it even possible to use a Netgear Access Point with the Time Capsule (I would think it would work, but I just can't get it to).
I can get the WN802T to be seen in my network, but I can not get it to carry the internet connection.
Any advice or steps would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any/all help

    friars, welcome to the discussions!
Sorry, but the possibility of extending the wireless network created by the Time Capsule with a device from another manufacturer is almost zero. Based on information from other top users, the only Netgear model that is shown as WDS compatible with an Apple base station is a model WGR614 v6.
Take a look at an Apple AirPort Express to "extend" the network created by the Time Capsule. While the Express will also do WDS, the bandwidth on your network will be cut by 50% with the addition of just one WDS device. The "extend" feature on the Express does not impose this type of penalty and it is fully WPA/WPA2 capable as well, much more secure than WEP.
For about the same money as an Express, you might also consider ethernet power line adapters. Almost as good as having a direct ethernet connection. Available from Netgear, Linksys, and others.

    Hi PaulEich,
    Welcome to the HP forums!!
I see from your post that you have a Photosmart B109n that you need to connect wirelessly to your Mac that is running 10.9. I will absolutely do my best to assist you with this!
I believe the reason the software is failing is because it's not intended to be used with the 10.9 operating system. At this time HP does not have full feature software released, you would have to install it via the Apple Updates. Which leads to the next issue, how to connect the printer to your wireless network. To do this, we will have to connect the Mac to the printer to get things setup properly
Please follow this post I did, that has worked for others, to get the printer connected to your wireless network. To restore the network defaults on your printer, please press the Setup option, then Network, then Restore network defaults, followed by Yes. Then to print off the Network Configuration page on your printer please follow the steps below:
On the control panel, touch the button ( ) next to Scan . The Wireless/Scan menu displays.
Touch the button next to Wireless Menu .
Touch the button next to Wireless Settings .
Touch the button next to Print Network Configuration Page .
Touch OK . The Network Configuration Page prints.
Let me know how this goes for you!!
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post resolved your issue, as it will help others find the solution faster
Click the “Kudos Thumbs Up" on the right to say “Thanks” for helping!

  • Universal Entity EJB find/select method for single db table

    Hi there.
I'm quite new in bea spheres and my question reflects my small knowledge:
Is there any way to perform "universal" sql query on single database table via find/select methods? This means, that I would like to pass whole WHERE clause to these methods, not just some fields values.
    What do I mean?
Normally we define find/select method that looks like this one:
SELECT OBJECT(o) FROM Cities AS o WHERE population>=?1 AND state=?2
We call this a method this way:
    finder1 (1000000, 'France')
Method returns collection with objects holding data about cities in France with more than 1000000 inhabitans..
But, I want to define method, that could be called this way:
    finder1 ("o.population>=1000000 AND o.state='France'")
This method should be able to perform any query on 'Cities' database table.
I tried with defining find method for following query:
SELECT OBJECT(o) FROM Cities AS o WHERE ?1
but it does not work, of course.
Is there possibility to define method that could be called this way?
    I use Bea Weblogic Workshop 8.1 SP3

    Hi,
The 'Dynamic Query' feature of WebLogic 8.1's EJB container can help you here. This feature enables you to execute complete EJB QL queries that are constructed on the fly. Check the WebLogic 8.1 documentation for more details.

  • Firmware update won't work after you've tried the Narf/Blanka method?

Many ppl have reported that their Firmware update won't work after they've tried the Narf/Blanka method for Dualbooting Windows. [For some reason, it doesn't).
Formatting the startup, reinstall etc WILL work ... because of what our friend says here : http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2076211#2076211
Fortunately, it isn't necessary To Reformat etc... (at least for the firmware update) Apparently, as long you boot from a different Disk to the one you've 'messed with' - such as , say, an external FW Drive, the Firmware updater works.
Had the same problems, same reasons on a 20". Booting from external FW Drive made it happen for me.
May someone be helped by this e-missive....

Sorry: the above is (partly) wrong ... - it'll get you past the firmware update but won't get you past the Boot Camp Assistant ... - it wants to see a single partition No matter what ...
[Just for that, I'm gonna see if I can mess with the 'can't do this on an external drive' requirement ... by moving an external to internal then back out again grin)
    best of luck...
