Wireless Access Outside the US

Hi. I am a US resident traveling to the UK with my PowerBook G4. It is equipped with an airport card for wireless access. Stupid question, but will I be able to connect wirelessly (i.e. with no special adapters, etc.) in any UK hotspot, just as I would in the US?
Tiffany

Doing the same with a MacBook, and also curious about any special network settings or anything I should be aware of in order to pick up internet access while in England.
Still working out the details so I am not sure if wired access will be provided, or if I will need to look for a hotspot or two in the area.

  • Windows laptops wireless access to the Internet and not to any of my files?

TC late 2008. I want to give Windows laptops wireless access to the Internet and not to any of my files? I have tried to locate "Guest" accounts in my Airport Utility with no luck and I do not understand my options. Example: Could I add a Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway router before or after my TC and not have a security problem?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Guest networking requires a "simultaneous dual-band" AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule. Those weren't introduced until 2009.
Are the files you want to protect on your Time Capsule or on your Mac? You can protect files on your Time Capsule with a password. In AirPort Utility look at the Disks panel, File Sharing tab.

  • Struts Portlet does not show images when it is accessed outside the domain

    Hi all,
I am using Oracle 10.1.2. I have created a Struts portlet. When I view the struts portlet from my office domain (University domain) it works well and shows the images properly. However, if I try to access the same page containing the struts portlet from some other domain (my home), I cannot see the images and CSS associated with the page. This might be a firewall issue. Is there any way out?
    Best regards,
    Omer

    I fixed the problem.  (YAY!)
It was the way I embedded the files -- the Dreamweaver default does not work properly so I used the embed from this generator: http://www.bobbyvandersluis.com/swfobject/generator/index.html#alternativeContentHelp which now lets my navbar and swfobjects load properly.  I also made sure that my slideshow (loader.swf) was set with wmode = opaque while the navbar is set to wmode = transparent.  The div for the nav bar has z-index set to 5 while the div for the slideshow has z-index set to 1.  Both have absolute positioning.  I hope this helps anyone in the future that has trouble with overlaying flash (.swf) files.
Thanks for your reply and trying to help me solve this issue!

  • IPhone SDK: access outside the sandbox?

In reading the docs for the iPhone SDK the sandbox aspect makes it sound like it will be impossible to create utilities that manipulate the system, other apps files, etc. Has anyone gotten a better read on this?
For example if you wanted to build something that would crawl the filesystem (e.g. a backup tool), how would you do it?

I don't know about the file system... but you can access pictures from the photos and addresses from the address book (music?) so some sort of rudimentary backup could happen... but then, if you can only backup to the same hard drive you are using it's not much use.

  • No wireless access with Windows XP Pro (SP2) on Macbook Pro

    Hello,
Just installed Windows XP Pro (SP2) on my new Macbook Pro using Bootcamp Beta. The installation has gone fine with the exception of wireless access to the internet through my Airport home network.
I've tried all the other configuraton wizards on XP...no joy.
The three other macs in the house (2 wireless, 1 ethernet) and one Windows laptop (wireless) are all fine and dandy.
Any suggestions on what to do?
    Thanks

    Right Click on My Computer
    Select Manage
    Click on Device Manager
Make sure that your Ethernet Adapters are working properly
If there is an red X or a yellow ! next to any ethernet adapter then try to reinstall the drivers.
(you can reinstall the drivers via the installation cd or double click on the hardware device under device manager. there should be a reinstall drivers button in there. point it to the CD that you burned from bootcamp)
(there will be a couple of devices that are not working properly.)

  • How to set-up Guest Client Wireless Access "PIN" with Restricted Access ???

This is my first time, and, I am not familiar with the rules.
Is it possible for someone to answer a slightly different question...
I just bought a TC and hooked it up to my cable modem. I have 3 computers that I want to configure, with the following requirements: WPA/WPA2 security all around, only the 3 computers I have to be allowed use of the TC, and, no listing of the network should appear on remote computers (i.e., a "closed network"). With these basic needs, the three computers I want to be in this network are listed below --- subject to the following ACCESS limitations:
    1. A G4 iMAC (10.5.5), wired to the TC via an Ethernet cable: FULL ACCESS; i.e., shared file access, TM back-ups, HP printer access, internet access;
    2. A MacBook (10.5.5), airport wireless access to the TC: FULL ACCESS, as the iMAC.
    3. A (new generation) PC laptop: VERY LIMITED access --- access only to the internet, so that the TC looks only like a "wireless router." Internet access available at any time of the day or week. It would be good if this client did not have to use any of my passwords, just a "PIN." Also, I do NOT want this PC client to see my printer, and, also, to NOT see my TC base station and NOT have access to my TC/TM disks. To set this up, I entered the PC laptop name and the "MAC" address using the Airport Utility. Then, I selected the "PIN" choice for access, so that this client need not have to ever use or know of any of my passwords. After I selected the "PIN" option, the utility asked me to enter the PC client's PIN. How do I obtain the PC's PIN? This is very confusing to me, so, I apologize to you all (I'm very new at this).
Hopefully, this TC-only network concern is within the guidelines to be answered.
    Thanks,
    David.

    Dear Smokerz,
Well, this is where I'm confused. I did use the Airport Utility. I went to the place where it asks for the PIN number. So, I made up an 8-digit number and entered it. I assumed that after I entered the number, it would prompt me to do something with the PC. But, the "Continue" button did not become highlighted. Hence, my confusion. Can you please be more specific as to exactly what I should do using the Airport Utility? The detailed instructions are vague to me, unfortunately.
Also, with respect to the PC Laptop: I only want it to have access to the internet via the TC (so that the TC acts as a wireless router). And, I want to set up restrictions for limited use of the PC: NO ACCESS to the HP printer, and NO ACCESS to the TM/TC (other than as a wireless router). As before, can you please be more specific as to exactly what I should do using the Airport Utility?
I must be missing a trivial menu item, so, again, I apologize.
    Thank you,
    David.

  • Can I set up wireless internet and a wireless printer at the same time?

I have an AirPort Express configured already which allows wireless access to the internet (as it is connected to my broadband router) but can I also configure it to allow wireless printer sharing at the same time?
I would appreciate an answer on this as I have been unable to determine it so far.
    Many thanks

The Express has a single Ethernet port, whereas, the Extreme has four would be one of most distinguishing feature differences. Obviously size differences would be #1. (ref: Identifying AirPort Hardware)
When connected directly another router, you have (effectively) two routers in series. In this configuration, the AirPort Express would need to be reconfigured as a bridge. This will allow the broadband router to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all the wired/wireless clients connected to either router.

  • Wireless Access to iMac DVD Drive from MacBook Air

Help please? Could access the IMac drive and DVDs from my MacBook Air until recently. Drive is no longer accessible. Have also lost ability to print remotely to printer attached to iMac (have tried re-setting permissions etc). Can also no longer access the HD on the iMac using wireless access from the MacBook Air. Also have a Mac Book (one of my offspring's) which has same problems. Tried re-pairing with Bluetooth etc. and checking sharing in sys prefs, but to no avail. Anyone got any ideas?!? Probably something dead simple, but I've been trying to get it going for so long - I give up!

Thank you. This one has very mixed feedback, that's why i thought i will ask. Have you used or heard about Asus BW-12D1S-U External Blu-ray Writer - Black? I am tempted to buy this one

  • Can i get wireless access with a 10.4.11

Can I get wireless access on the internet with a Dual core intel processor 10.4.11

If it has an Airport card fitted, yes.
It's very likely it already has, but to be certain, go to the Apple menu > "about this Mac" > More info
Under Network in the left pane you'll see Airport' select that and it'll tell you what card is fitted (if any).
You should also have in the menu bar on the right a pie-slice type symbol; click that and you'll get the option to switch on airport if it's present.
You'll need to set it up in Network Preferences to connect to your wi-fi router.

  • Set up time capsule as wireless access point

I am trying to set up my old apple time capsule as a wireless access point for my girlfriend. She is at college and the university does not permit routers, so I am trying to set the time capsule up so that is just takes the hardwired internet and allows wireless access to the internet so she can use her iPad and MacBook Air on the wireless instead of having to use a gigabit adapter to use the ethernet. The time capsule has the newest firmware and she is running mavericks which has the newest airport utility software. However I am not sure what settings to use to make this work. I am fairly intelligent when it comes to computers however I am not very skilled in networking. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you in advance!

How old is the Time Capsule? Running what firmware?
You have a problem.. If you cannot use the TC in router mode, then you are going to have to use it in bridge.. and it then depends on if the Uni system will hand out mulitple IP addresses. .which I doubt. In the end you might be stuck.. and it is not possible really with any system..
Bridge normally requires that the TC take an IP address and then clients connecting to the TC wireless will also get IP addresses.. but if the uni system only hands out one address then the TC has already captured it and there are no more available.. but try that method first.. as it is the easiest.
If it fails there is a more complicated method.. where we can give the TC a separate static IP in a different IP range and the wireless will still be bridged.. so the MBA or the ipad can use the wireless.. but only one can ever be online at a time.
The only way around this is to use the TC as a router contra the rules in the uni.. although I would suggest the uni only cares if you break their system. Most people don't.. but I am unsure what happens if you do.
Ask their IT people how to use a wireless only device like ipad, when they only provide ethernet. You might find there already is a wireless internet system as well.

  • WRT600N - Lost Wireless Access

I tried a search and found nothing similar.  1st, everything had been working well, then, for some reason, I lost wireless access to the internet.  I can still access my local network wirelessly (printer and a couple of other local items) but no internet.  I can access the internet normally using a wired connection into the router (plus all the local items).  I have check all my sttings and have "booted" everything a handfull of times.
    Any suggestions?
    Jim

As you have mentioned in your post, you are able to go online when you hardwire your computers to the router, but you are not able to go online wirelessly through router. Here are some settings which you can changed on your router, and i believe that this might solve your problem and you will be able to go online wirelessly..
This if for 5GHz Wireless Settings :
Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network.Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to159 and Standard Channel to 161-5.805GHz...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
This is for 2.4GHz Wireless Settings :
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
Note : Before you connect to your wireless network, remove all the prefered network list from your computers and after this you can try connecting to your wireless network.

  • How can I not allow wireless access when extending a network?

I have two Airport Extremes, one extends the network of the other. How can I not allow wireless access on the remote Extreme when extending a network? I could do it with Airport Utility 5.6, but not with version 6 on Mavericks.

Correct. Use another Mac or even a PC running Airport Utility 5.x.  Once you have the extending Extreme configured the way you want, Mavericks will not change the setting on the extending Extreme.

  • Wireless access point advice for SMB (5 users)

I have a small site, 12 employees, five of whom will need wireless access to the LAN.
This site has an 877 (not 877W) and so I need a wireless access point.
I've been looking at the Cisco Aironet 1130AG. Can anyone make a recommendation, something that will be the same or similar to configure as wireless services on the 800 series wireless routers.
There is no domain or radius server, so any user authentication will need to be handled by the AP.
Any useful information would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gareth

You're on the right track. The 1131AG is a great platform for small offices. It has built in antennas and is not offensive looking when mounted to the ceiling. Running a single 1131AG would allow you to run RADIUS locally on the AP so you could still use EAP security types such as EAP-FAST with WPA2.
Once you go to deploy, there are plenty of us here on the forum that can help if you run into config gotchas.
Of course I'll include the standard disclaimer that your coverage might vary based on the building construction, so you could need multiple APs to cover enough area. If certain coverage is absolutely mandatory, you should consider a site-survey beforehand.

  • Is it possible to remove the iphone history of wireless access points to which you've connected?

So.... I work in a place where there is a lot of security and snooping.  There are folks specifically assigned to track down phones in unauthorized places.  Their enthusiasm is sometimes annoying.
I leave my phone in a locker outside of the restricted area.  However, I recently overheard some of the "snoops" discussing a phone that they had found.  They were discussing a specific wireless access point that was in that phone's history, that caused some discussion.  Although the phone was located in the locker area, they had apparently discovered it and examined it.
    It was my phone.
One obvious course of action is to make sure the phone is always turned off (which I will do), but they have now identified my phone by the APs to which I connect, and I'd like to erase that history.
    Is it possible?
    Thank you.

ok so heres what i have done so far i installed windows server 2012 essential on a computer followed the wizard to add a couple of users and gave them anywhere access followed the wizard and ran the anywhere access to completion setup the ports 80 and 443
on router manually to forward to my router ip 10.0.1.20
my server is still on dynamic ip
then i go to a windows 7 ultimate computer whent to the connect url downloaded the connect tool ran to completion and restarted the computer so far everything working inside my lan i can connect to the server see shared files and open the dash management
now i go outside connect to a wired or wireless network of a friend and try to connect to http://xxxxxxx.remotewebaccess.com
but am unsuccessfull then i check on my network adapter page and see that there is a new adapter that is called as my remotewebaccess.com so i click on it and try to connect but still fails........
please help what am i doing wrong?
i checked everywhere and cant find a solution.
    Thank you

It is probably better to assign a static IP to your server, but OTH it may not change.  But you really hate to go off on vacation and have the ip change and everything break.
Now you said you forwarded ports 80 and 443 to your router, I bet you meant your server?
Do www.whatismyip.com and from outside ping xxxx.remotewebaccess.com and make sure they are true same ip
From a PC or the server on your network go to grc.com and do shields up and make sure it reports 80 and 443 as open
