Trying to help a buddy with iMessages--Phone vs pad/mac

I've got a friend who I've brought into the Apple world. He has an iMac running Mavericks, and an iPhone 5c and an iPad. He has the iMessages app on all three, but he's only getting iMessages on his phone. They do not show up on either his iPad or iMac. I was with him today with my MacBook Pro, iPad and iPhone 4S. We compared settings on everything and all we could see that was different is that while all of his list his email addresses, nowhere does it list his phone number as being in the mix, where as on all of my items my cell phone number is listed. But where we could see where he could add an email address to where he received messages, we didn't see where he could add in his cell phone number.
Anyone have any idea what we can do to get messages sent to him to show up on both his iPad and Mac?

Hi,
The Process should be like this:-
On th Mac add the Apple ID.
If an iPhone is already using it's iPhone Number you can message the iPhone Number as a test.
Next you can test from the iPhone (sending as it's iPhone Number) to the Apple ID.
Now you add the Apple ID to the iPhone.
At this point the iPhone should show iMessages sent to it's Number and sync versions of Messages sent to the Apple ID.
If you now restart the Mac version you should get pop ups saying what the iPhone is using regarding the Apple ID and the iPhone Number.
Accepting these adds them to the mac iMessages pane settings - the iPhone Number appears in the Receive At options and a drop down appears to change the Send From choice.
The iPad should also see pop ups and it needs to accept them.
I personally have seen the iPhone have the iPhone Number unticked (not in use) despite it being a greyed out option.
This means it only "sees" the Apple ID iMessages.
If this has happened remove the Apple ID on th iPhone.
Place the iPhone in Airplane mode (it insures a break with the servers)
On taking it out of Airplane Mode check the Messages app is On and the iPhone Number is verifying the number.
When it is done send s test iMessages to the Apple ID (Mac).
Then ad the Apple ID and restart the Mac version to speed up getting the Pop ups.
Accept the Pop ups.

HT1752 I am trying to help my Mom over the phone to open her CD tray on a PPC G-4 iMac - "Desk Lamp" style. F12 is not working.

I am trying to assist my mother on the other side of the country. She has the 'Desk Lamp' G-4 and cannot get the CD tray open. I tried several things over the phone beginning with F-12. Nothing is in the tray and nothing is working to open it. Any suggestions?

Help old lady with installing phone - BT freestyle...

I live in Germany and bought my 93 year old Auntie a BT freestyle 750 phone with a base, answerphone and 2 extra handsets. She is having trouble setting it up. She has asked a couple of people to help her, but they haven't managed to do it for her. How much would it cost for BT to come out and set it up for her. She is suffering hearing loss but won't admit it :-( so it is useless to ask her to speak to BT over the phone. My Auntie is a BT customer.

I suspect the solution to the problem is probably to get your Auntie something a bit less techie: eg a BT big button 100 and use 1571 instead of an answering machine facility.
You dont say whether she is a hearing aid user (who actually uses it).

HT4910 My iphone says it hasn't been backed up to the cloud since 4/23/12. I've tried again to back up with the phone connected to computer and still nothing. I cannot revert back to computer as it defaults to backing up to the cloud.

Trying to help a coach with an iMovie

I got this from a school I help support:
working on a highlight film for his basketball players. He makes
one every year. He always starts it on his iMac. Now he is trying to
move the file to a comptuer that will burn it to a DVD. We have target
disked his imac to his laptop and to the desktop computer, but when it
comes over, there are clips that are all black and won't play. They are
fine on the imac but not in the copied file.
I have checked the permissions on the moved file, but can't seem to figure
out why the file won't work.

It depends on what you mean by "sync the iPad with the iPhone". Technically, you can't sync the devices like you would sync with a computer anyway, so you can't think that way. You can keep the two devices in sync, but if you want two devices with identical content on them, you have to restore one device from the backup of the other device for starters.
After that, you would have to download the same apps on the one device that you have on the other device, download all of the same songs, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and so on. The you would have have iCloud enabled on both devices in order to keep app data in sync, if the apps work with iCloud. So enable iCloud on bit devices and go to Settings>iCloud and turn on all of the items in there...mail, notes, reminders, Safari, calendar, photo stream, contacts, documents and data, etc.
You would also have to turn on automatic downloads in Settings> iTunes & App Store>Automatic Downloads> on for songs, apps and books so that whatever you download on one device downloads to the other device.
If you have any apps that do not work with iCloud for the purposes of syncing app data, it will be impossible to keep the two devices identical total in content.

Help! Problem with old phone's data to new phone.

My 4S got stolen, so I got a new one.
I initally selected the "start new iPhone" option, it copied all the apps, but no previous messages. When I realized that, I restored the new phone and then selected to restore the back up from the old phone. Now, the messages are up but I have no apps.
And I don't see the usual iPhone iTunes startup where you should see the tabs. It still shows the "Set Up Your iPhone" option.
What am I doing wrong and what should I do?

Did you use Apple's migration tool? It misses a lot of support files, especially in the Application Support directories.
You'll have to copy those files manually, or reinstall the app.

My buddy tried to help me install windows 8 on my new mac book and all he did was put the disc in and now it will not come out and my mac book will not turn off

Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

Only the carrier it is locked to can authorize unlocking it. Sounds like the phone was hacked to unlock it originally. Find out what carrier it is locked to, and look up their contact information using google or the search engine of your choice.

I have been having a similar problem for the last few days.Without warning the signal will just completely duck out leaving the device searching for several minutes before settling on a no signal message.
Sometimes restarting the device, toggling data and 3g settings or toggling Airplane Mode will set things right. However, a lot of the time I've been left without a working phone.
I don't believe this is a SIM issue, as I had to change my SIM only one month ago for another signal related problem. Again any help would be appreciated here as well.

There is not an option below for Mavericks. Both iMacs are running mavericks, and have screen sharing turned on. I am trying to help my father with various tasks on his imac. We are trying to share screens with Messages. We are both able to initiate a request for screen sharing, however, the request never shows up on either screen. We have also tried connect to server via finder using VNC. This doesn't work either. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

How have you tried to sync it ? With the phone connected and selected on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, you should be able to use the Books tab on the right-hand side of iTunes to select and sync the audiobook to the phone's Music app - if there are audiobooks on your phone then you should get an Audiobooks option in the Music app.
