Trying to Optimize Servers

I have a Compaq ML570 with 4 Processors and I have another server that is A ML570 with 2 processors.In essbase the calculations on the server with 2 processors calcualate much faster...in fact one calculation was 47 minutes faster on the server with 2 processors than the one with 4 processors. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I have done wrong or could be doing wrong?Please post back on discussion boardthanks

Check and see what the array controllers are in both Compaq ML570's. The default array controller (Smart Array 5i) has an embedded controller set for 100% Read / 0% Write caching. This setting is static and cannot be changed. Performance will be poor using this controller in an Essbase server. However, another controller (Smart Array 5200) can be configured as 50% Read / 50% Write caching. The performance of Essbase on this type of configuration will be much faster. My guess would be one server has an embedded controller and the other doesn't.

  • Trying to optimize eSATA and internal disk configurations

    I'm trying to optimize the HD setup on my dual 2.5GHz G5 with 4.5GB RAM
    major considerations.
    - massive itunes library (260GB), and big iphoto lib (25GB) as well
    - lots of video editing in Final Cut with large capture files and many video exports
    - regular podcasting and other media creation with all my music and photos
    - need for regular COMPLETE backups
    - speed
    Here's the current setup. I have six disks as part of the system
    1. internal 160GB disk (maps simply to a MACHD volume)
    2. internal 250GB disk (maps simply to a COMMONS volume for Democracy player files, torrent downloads etc)
    then on my 4-port eSATA controller card
    4x 500GB SATA drives from Western Digital for a total of 2TB eSATA disk space
    they are in 2 eSATA enclosures from FirmTek
    I'm managing the disks with SoftRAID
    Before I get into the problem, how would YOU use this incredible amount of disk space, considering the goals I have? (video, media storage, backup).
    Now, The problem
    I've been disappointed with the speed of my system and suspect its my HD configuration. I have enough RAM right!?
    I've got some raid stripes going on
    2 of the 500GB disks (disk2 and disk3) support two "active" volumes
    a) a striped ATLAS volume of 800GB (holds itunes, documents, iphoto, basically all media files)
    b) a striped VIDEO SCRATCH volumn of 200GB (for working files in FCP, imovie, etc)
    the other 2 of the 500GB disks (disk0 and disk1) support two "clone" volumes
    a) a mirror MACHDCLONE volume on both disk0 and disk1 (to protect the system drive. I run Super Duper 3x per week)
    b) a striped ATLAS_CLONE volume to backup the active ATLAS volume
    the COMMONS volume is not backed up in any way. figure i can live without my Democracy files and torrents, etc.
    My ideas:
    based on my performance observations, my setup above is just wrong, and I don't know where to turn for the best advice. Google is very poor at dealing with such complexity in search results. There are some video advice sites, but they only cover part of my problems. I have a few theories of how I should be using these drives
    1. use the eSATA drives strictly for performance benefits, not for backup. consider a USB2.0 drive for backups and use Mozy for offsite backup
    2. simplify the disk allocation. No single disk should support more than one volume
    3. the video scratch SHOULD be striped in order to benefit from speed. and should be on its own physical disk(s) separate from ANY other function
    So I'm thinking
    a) stripe two of the eSATAs into a single 1 TB array for my media or ATLAS volume
    - this solves me running out of space on the volume (getting closer with the iTunes video downloads every day)
    - it's also just physically easier to deal with. I can SEE what drives make up ATLAS alone
    - will be easier for me to eventually replace the G5 with an MBP running its own eSATA pc card with easy access to the same ATLAS volume
    this still leaves two 500GB eSATA disks around
    b1) I could extend the ATLAS volume to an array including a 3rd eSATA disk for a 1.5TB volume. this would allow me to bring COMMONS files onto ATLAS
    b2) the remaining 500GB eSATA disk can be video scratch
    OR
    c1) dedicate 1 500GB disk to VIDEO SCRATCH
    and
    c2) partition the other 500GB disk as a clone of both COMMONS and the internal System drive
    see how CONFUSING THIS IS ?
    there are too many permutations of things.
    I know I like keeping the system drive simple and internal. Ideally, the second internal disk would mirror this volume, but they do not match in size or brand
    part of me wants to stripe all FOUR eSATA drives into a blazing 2TB masterpiece, but it seems like a bad idea to put VIDEO SCRATCH on the same array as ATLAS
    Other questions:
    should the itunes library get it's own disk altogether? is striping of benefit here?
    are there some sites that explain HD management well?
    PowerMac G5 2.5GHz 4.5GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   also own a blacbook

    Thanks so much for that awesome feedback.
    A few points.
    I have the dual processor G5, not the quad core. Purchased in Jan 2005.
    My RAM pageouts are fine (didn't know what that was until you mentioned it)
    Love the idea of moving COMMONS "outside the box"
    I used to have my system volume boot from an external RAID, but didn't notice a big improvement, and it meant my G5 would ONLY boot if the eSATAs were powered up. I just didn't like that feel. I want the tower to work in a self-contained fashion, even if I don't have access to all media. I want access to the OS and apps.
    I'm unlikely to buy more SATA controllers and enclosers or too many new disks. I'm on a serious budget and want to work with as much of what I have as possible. That said, i just checked out the Drobo and am drooling. I'll wait to see how well it performs for data access (and video) and not just storage.
    It sounds dreamy to stripe all four of the eSATAs into a 1.8TB storage megaplex. I imagine they would scream in an ATLAS_BADASS volume, but then I've got nothing left for VIDEO SCRATCH used to capture and render.
    The VIDEO_SCRATCH doesn't need to be large, and I think that's where I'm having a conflict. My eSATA drives are way too big to use even ONE as a video scratch, much less striping two of those bad boys just for that purpose
    Purchasing a 10K drive for video scratch (or system volume) is not really in the cards yet.
    So here's where I sit now:
    1. My Media Storage
    ++ the 4 eSATA drives (2.0TB raw)
    I go with the badass steroid injected ATLAS volume striped across all four.
    this is my media array and holds all the contents of ATLAS and COMMONS (iTunes, iPhoto, Documents, FCP training videos, ripped DVDs, the works)
    2. My System Volume
    ++ the 250GB internal SATA
    move COMMONS out
    migrate system volume to this disk
    better storage-to-free space ratio
    3. My Scratch Disk
    a) use the now-spare 160GB internal Maxtor (probably weak and slow)
    b) get an external FW800 RAID disk from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/hard-drives/EliteAL/StripedRAID
    I'd go with the 160GB or 320GB
    4. Backup Plan - level 1 - local
    ++ use my spare external Maxtor 250GB FW drive
    clone the system volume regularly
    ++ get an external FW drive (like the 1TB My Book Premium II from WD)
    clone ATLAS_BADASS regularly
    the WD is just $400
    i know it's capacity is lower than my super striped RAID, but i don't know of any cheap way to clone ATLAS_BADASS to a 1.5TB drive
    5. Backup Plan - level 2 - remote
    pay for a Mozy storage account which has unlimited capacity
    upload system and ATLAS_BADASS every few weeks
    any new thoughts? and thanks again!

  • Trying to optimize this simple query

    Hi,
    I am trying to optimize this simple query but the two methods I am trying actually make things worse.
    The original query is:
    SELECT customer_number, customer_name
    FROM bsc_pdt_account_mv
    where rownum <= 100
    AND Upper(customer_name) like '%SP%'
    AND customer_id IN
    SELECT cust_id FROM bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv
    WHERE area_identifier IN (
    SELECT area_identifier FROM bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv
    WHERE ad_identifier = '90004918' or rm_identifier = '90004918' or tm_identifier = '90004918'
    The result set of this query returns me the first 100 rows in 88 seconds and they are all distinct by default (don't know why they are distinct).
    My first attempt was to try to use table joins instead of the IN conditions:
    SELECT
    distinct -- A: I need to use distinct now
    customer_number, customer_name
    FROM bsc_pdt_account_mv pdt,
    bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv asf,
    SELECT distinct area_identifier FROM bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv
    WHERE ad_identifier = '90004918' or rm_identifier = '90004918' or tm_identifier = '90004918'
    ) area
    where
    area.area_identifier = asf.area_identifier
    AND asf.cust_id = pdt.customer_id
    AND Upper(customer_name) like '%SP%'
    AND rownum <= 100 -- B: strange when I comment this out
    order by 1
    I dont understand two things with this query. First issue, I now need to put in the distinct because the result set is not distinct by default. Second issue (very strange), when I put the rownum condition (<100) I get two rows in 1.5 seconds. If I remove the condition, I get 354 rows (whole result set) in 326 seconds.
    My second attempt was to use EXISTS instead of IN:
    SELECT
    customer_number, customer_name
    FROM bsc_pdt_account_mv pdt
    where Upper(customer_name) like '%SP%'
    AND rownum <= 100
    AND EXISTS
    select 1 from
    bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv asf,
    SELECT distinct area_identifier FROM bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv
    WHERE ad_identifier = '90004918' or rm_identifier = '90004918' or tm_identifier = '90004918'
    ) area
    where
    area.area_identifier = asf.area_identifier
    AND asf.cust_id = pdt.customer_id
    This query returns a similar distinct result set as teh original one but takes pretty much the same time (87 seconds).

    The query below hangs when run in TOAD or PL/SQL Dev. I noticed there is no rows returned from the inner table for this condition.
    SELECT customer_number, customer_name
    FROM
    bsc_pdt_account_mv pdt_account
    where rownum <= 100
    AND exists (
    SELECT pdt_sales_force.cust_id
    FROM bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv pdt_sales_force
    WHERE pdt_account.customer_id = pdt_sales_force.cust_id
    AND (pdt_sales_force.rm_identifier = '90007761' or pdt_sales_force.tm_identifier = '90007761') )
    ORDER BY customer_name
    -- No rows returned by this query
    SELECT pdt_sales_force.cust_id
    FROM bsc_pdt_assoc_sales_force_mv pdt_sales_force
    WHERE pdt_sales_force.rm_identifier = '90007761' or pdt_sales_force.tm_identifier = '90007761'

    There are no Apple employees here but....
    Have you tried using the Selective Track Import (STI) feature to recover the tracks one by one from your corrupted project to a new one?
    This video is for LP9 but STI works much the same way in LPX and is one of the most useful little 'gadgets' in LP's toobox...

  • Trying to optimize the following update query

    I am trying to update a table based on the values of another table in the following manner. I have two tables A and B. Say A has 300,000 records and B has 100,000 which is basically a set of the 300,000 in A. Therefore, B has the exact same records as A. There are two columns in both tables (status and my_status). Currently for all the records in A these two values are 0 and null respectively. In B, the same records have different values for the two columns. Table A needs to updated with these values currently in B. I have the following the query that I am hesitant to use since the explain shows a very high cost and a full table scan of B.
    update A a
    set (status,my_status) = (select b.status, b.my_status from B b, A a where a.id = b.id)
    where a.date >= '01-JAN-2003' and a.cd = 'FD'.
    As the above query shows, the where condition in the outer part(where a.date >= '01-JAN-2003' and a.cd = 'FD'.) ensures that only those records present in B are updated in A. Is there any way to join at the outer part where I can just specify A.id = B.id rather than having two conditions? Or is there any other route that would optimize this sort of a query?

    Hi,
    Be sure to put unique constraints on A.ID and B.ID like so before running the UPDATE view statement, like this:
    ALTER TABLE a ADD CONSTRAINT a_uk1 UNIQUE (id);
    ALTER TABLE b ADD CONSTRAINT b_uk1 UNIQUE (id);Then, remember to gather stats like so:
    BEGIN
       FOR x IN (SELECT table_name
                 FROM user_tables
                 WHERE table_name IN ('A', 'B')) LOOP
         DBMS_STATS.gather_table_stats (ownname               => USER
                                      , tabname               => x.table_name
                                      , partname              => NULL
                                      , estimate_percent      => DBMS_STATS.auto_sample_size
                                      , block_sample          => FALSE
                                      , method_opt            => 'FOR ALL INDEXED COLUMNS SIZE 254'
                                      , degree                => NULL
                                      , granularity           => 'ALL'
                                      , cascade               => TRUE
                                      , no_invalidate         => FALSE
       END LOOP;
    END;
    /Good luck!

  • Is @parallel startup of services useless? Trying to optimize startup

    Today i tried to improve my startup time. I already have a customized Kernel, but i use the standard Arch layout (initrd etc) with it, so i looked for other places to improve my boot time.
    Parallel startup was already enabled on my machine:
    DAEMONS=(@syslog-ng gensplash @crond @gpm network portmap hal avahi-daemon @avahi-dnsconfd @lisa @samba @alsa @cpufreqd kdm)
    This is the initial bootchart:
    Then i disabled parallel startup:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng gensplash crond gpm network portmap hal avahi-daemon avahi-dnsconfd lisa samba alsa cpufreqd kdm)
    Here is the result:
    And just to try it out, i added a "&" to the /sbin/modprobe $mod line in rc.sysinit:
    Never mind what i am doing, the startup time is always 21 seconds. I also noticed that the disk thoughput is about 10mb higher with @parallel startup disabled (i hope i do not misunderstand it).
    So what can i do to improve the startup a little bit more? (Without removing daemons)
    And why does the parallel startup changes nothing?
    Not that it isnt fast enought, but i am asking myself about the parallel stuff and how i maybe can improve it a little more, if that is possible

    retsaw wrote:
    I did find putting kdm at the start of the list and backgrounding it made an improvement to my boot time, but I didn't get that much improvement from backgrounding other stuff.
    The best thing I did for my startup times was using suspend to RAM rather than turning off completely.  Before that I had to live with the BIOS taking ~8s just to get to the bootloader, with STR my computer takes less time to be usable than it would normally take to start booting the kernel.
    I found the exact opposite.  Mine:
    DAEMONS=(@kdm @hal @network @netfs @crond @syslog-ng @cups
    @samba @lisa)
    Leads to a very fast load, but still have to wait for kdm.  I haven't restarted since I did the command that funkyou suggested though, so I'll have to see if that actually made a difference or not.

  • Photo sync trying to optimize my whole collection? why?

    I choose 'Select Folders' and picked 4 to 5 folders maybe about 500 pictures total.
    When it syncs it says its optimizing 1 of 12196 (which is going to take some time).
    What is it doing as I did not choose the whole library? Plus even after it completes there is nothing there but Camera Roll.
    Tried a reboot makes no difference.

  • IMovie is trying to optimize - can I make it stop??

    I imported some video, and it has been attempting to optimize. I finally force-quit and used the old iMovie HD just to finish the project. Now i have relaunched iMovie and it's picking up where it left off. Saying it will be 96 hours to finish optimizing. I'm done with the project - I just want to make it stop and trash that video. How do i do this?
    iMovie v9.0.9
    Mavericks

    u should go to the apple icon on menu bar and then go to "Force Quit" and then select the application u want to quit. if u did, microsoft word won't appear again when u open. make sure that before u shut down ur mac, u need to force quit to make sure the applications u opened wil not appear when u start mac. good luck..

  • A student trying to optimize their credit score

    Hello, I am a 26 year old student with a credit score of 700 that hasn't really been increasing (or decreasing) over the past year. The only form of credit I currently have is a discover it credit card. I will soon be taking out about $10k in direct subsidized student loans as well. Besides that, I have a checking account with chase and discover. I don't have an income, but will be living off of student loans and grants for the next couple of years, and would prefer to be building credit with a CC during that time rather than paying by debit card. Currently, on my discover card, I keep my utilization below 10% but above 0%, and make sure to pay on time. I don't really know what else I can do besides that, and I would like to raise my score, at least to the 750 range. I can't take out home or auto loans because I don't have an income (and don't need either home nor auto). The only other things I can think of doing are opening another CC or taking out a small personal loan and paying it back vigilantly. Does anybody have some advice on where I can go from here? I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

    I agree with Axe.  If you can let us know when you opened your Discover card, that would be helpful for us to know in order to give you advice.  Axe gave you some other good advice. Acquiring two more credit cards in the next year is a good idea too, as Gdale said.  With three CCs and the occasional installment loan (you will be starting a student loan soon) you can achieve VERY high scores.  That's all I had for a long time and my scores climbed into the 820s. You gave us an essential piece of information which is that you are NOT trying to prepare to buy a house (or even a car) for a while.  Those purchases sound very low on your own emotional radar too -- at least for the next 4-5 years. Following up on that, can you tell us what you think your own credit-related goals are?  Here are two different goals as an example, but you might have others: (1)  I'd love to get my scores higher so that I can get more and more credit cards.  My goals is to eventually have ten (or more) credit cards, with a number of them being really prestigious rewards cards of different kinds -- the kind you need high scores to get. (2)  I'd love to get my scores higher since down the road I will eventually want to buy a house. Credit cards are great but I don't need more than a few.  Getting more CC's is fine but only as a tactic if it helps me achieve the goal of raising my score. These are two very common goals people will often have here.  As I said, you might have other goals, such as "I want 10 prestige cards and to buy a house in the next 12 months."  (Arguably an unrealistic goal, but it helps to know if that IS your goal.)  The reason to get clear about your goals is that the advice you get should differ depending on which goal you have.  Final note: your 700 score is a good one.  Great job, great place to be starting.  With that starting place and your attention to careful credit maintenance, you should have a bright future ahead of you.  Can you confirm for us that the 700 score you have is a true FICO score?  I assume that it is the free score you are getting through your Discover card?

The service was shut off so i just used it as a personal organiser and used the internet through wifi. I had never updated the software for it because i didnt have a computer to sync it too to do the itunes updates. Is that possibly the problem? how do i make it work again?

  • Newbie trying to optimize webcam with ffplay

    I am playing with ffplay to view my webcam:
    ffplay -f video4linux2 /dev/video0 -x 320 -y 240
    According to v4l-info, this is my webcam's native resolution.
    I noticed, however, that the display is very delayed, i.e. if I move my head it takes more than a second for my head to follow on the screen.
    Which options are relevant in ffplay to experiment with, to make my webcam more responsive? Any pointers? I am completely new to the whole world of video, things like bitrate, pixel type, etc. throw up more questions than could be answered with google, so I want to slowly get the ball rolling by doing something more hands-on.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    PS: I know there has to be a way to make this work as on windows the webcam is very smooth...

    anyone? technical support is ringing out.thanks

  • Trying to Optimize disk space

    I am an amateur photographer.   I have established a star-rating system which would allow me to compress most of the images I have (currently in RAW format) to a highly-compressed JPEG.  These are pictures I will never print in large format so have not reason to keep in high fidelity.
    I believe what I need to do is:
    1)      Save all metadata to files.
    2)      Export all 1-star pictures to JPEG.
    3)      Delete all selected files
    4)      Import newly exported JPEGs.
    This seems like the long way around.  Is there another way?
    Using LR2 on Windows7.
    Thanks

    Thanks so much to all three of you.
    THis is really helpfull... and yes, I'll have my camera save both RAW & JPEG... I wonder about the files names but I'm sure I'll figure it out when I see it .
    Thaks again!!

  • Trying to optimize a home network with ABS, AE and a router!  New advice!

    I currently have this setup:
    Cable modem going into a linksys router.
    1 line goes to an imac
    1 line goes to an emac
    1 line goes to a silly windows pc
    1 line goes to an AIRPORT BASE STATION (usb -older one)
    From the ABS - I power 2 laptops (ibooks) - wirelessly
    Also in the network is 2 Airport Express - 1 in an upstairrs office with itunes and printer and the other one downstairs in the entertainment center for itunes.
    I do not get great range but it is workable upstairs and down.
    If I remove the ABS and just use the 2 AE, will I get a bigger, stronger wireless network? I do get itunes drop out downstairs sometimes. Does the ABS do anything for me in this setup? I added the AE for itunes and printing but was told that it would be better to remove the ABS and just use these devices. The older ABS does not extend the netowork, correct?
    If so, should i plug directly into the AE from the modem and then go to the router? What do I gain with the current setup vs plugging into the linksys router AFTER the AE?
    Any advice would be helpful
    jf

    You will find that not all 3rd party routers will allow you to extend the network and use WDS, as shown in th link.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
    Basicly it is a confiquration issue after that, You don't need to use 2 routers like you have now.
    Most users make the mistake and try to use a setup like you have and both routers are setup assign IP's, only the main can be confiqured this way.
    This is one of the many reasons why it is a good idea to use all Airport Equipment to avoid incompatibility with 3rd party equipment. Some will mix and match some will not.
    Hope this helps.

  • Considering re-install of osx; trying to optimize powerbook for audio.

    Hi, I'm new to logic and the forum and have a question for any of the logic users. Will running a custom install of osx maximize hard drive space and improve logic's performance. I use my computer for a few things: web browsing, word processing, itunes, and of course logic. I'd reallly like to get the most out of my machine, any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Yeah, be careful about deleting fonts. There are some fonts that are absolutely necessary for the system to function correctly. There was a recent article in MacWorld (check on-line) that detailed exactly which fonts are for what and which you can forgo.
    But seriously, be careful. If you toast the wrong font, the whole system will not work. I'd recommend just unchecking the box for additional fonts and languages when you install the OS. You'd probably save a bit more room and memory by losing the few extraneous fonts, but it probably won't be a noticeable difference.

  • Domain Controllers that are DNS servers DNS Client settings

    [Copying verbatim from a mail by Joe ]
    So I have been pinged by a few folks recently on configuration of client DNS settings on Domain Controllers that are also functioning as DNS Servers. Lots of debate. I understand there has been long time debate within MSFT as well.
    From http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/07/17/friday-mail-sack-saturday-edition.aspx there
    is the quote
    "3.When referencing a DNS server on itself, a DNS client should always use a loopback address and not a real IP address."
    From http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=9166 (Windows
    Server 2008 R2 Core Network Guide)
    "9.        In Preferred DNS server, type the IP address of your DNS server. If you plan to use the local computer as the preferred DNS server, type the IP address of the
    local computer.
    10.       In Alternate DNS Server, type the IP address of your alternate DNS server, if any. If you plan to use the local computer as an alternate DNS server, type the IP address of
    the local computer."
    From http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378900(v=ws.10).aspx (DNS:
    DNS servers on <adapter name> should include their own IP addresses on their interface lists of DNS servers)
    "The inclusion of its own IP address in the list of DNS servers improves performance and increases availability of DNS servers. However, if the DNS server is also a domain controller and it points only to
    itself for name resolution, it can become an island and fail to replicate with other domain controllers. For this reason, use caution when configuring the loopback address on an adapter if the server is also a domain controller. The loopback address should
    be configured only as a secondary or tertiary DNS server on a domain controller...
    Add the loopback IP address to the list of DNS servers on all active interfaces. The loopback IP address should not be the first server in the list."
    ESPECIALLY "For this reason, use caution when configuring the loopback address on an adapter if the server is also a domain controller. The loopback address should be configured only as a secondary or tertiary
    DNS server on a domain controller." and "Add the loopback IP address to the list of DNS servers on all active interfaces. The loopback IP address should not be the first server in the list."
    Why shouldn't loopback not be first, the justification is why you shouldn't only use loopback, not why it shouldn't be first.
    From http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff807362(v=ws.10).aspx (DNS:
    DNS servers on <adapter name> should include the loopback address, but not as the first entry)
    "If the loopback IP address is the first entry in the list of DNS servers, Active Directory might be unable to find its replication partners.
    The inclusion of its own IP address in the list of DNS servers improves performance and increases availability of DNS servers. However, if the DNS server is also a domain controller and it points only to itself,
    or points to itself first for name resolution, this can cause a delay during startup. For this reason, use caution when configuring the loopback address on an adapter if the server is also a domain controller. The loopback address should be configured only
    as a secondary or tertiary DNS server on a domain controller."
    This also seems like justification against only using loopback versus using it first.
    Are there any actual real documented issues for using loopback first and a remote DNS server second and perhaps third? If the local DNS server service isn't working yet (or at all), I would expect the DNS Client process
    to try to connect to it, fail, and then failover to the secondary just like I would expect it to failover if the remote DNS server was secondary and it was unavailable and it failed back to the loopback. Am I making a bad assumption?
    And by documented I don't mean random responses to questions on the internet or other such items. I mean a KB article or technet article or properly researched and tested other web article from a reliable resource.
    thanks,
    joe

    As I understand it, the scenario whereby a DC could become an 'island' if it points only to itself, or to itself first, was repaired in the Windows Server 2003 product cycle. See
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275278 for information about this scenario.
    However, there is still a known problem of slow boot times that can occur. See
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2001093 for information about this. The scenario that is discussed assumes there is a power failure and servers shut down due to overheating while on backup power. When
    multiple servers come online simultaneously after power is restored, there can be a significant delay.
    The recommended configuration is one that avoids a single point of failure, but also tries to optimize the speed of resource record registration, so that Active Directory can properly synchronize.
