Trying to shorten export time

Been trying to export 1920x1080 using h.264 codec for posting on web. I first set up my own Export but took 8 hrs to finish 35%. Been looking at the Apple Devices 720 or 1080 options now. I switch options from Apple Device to Web Hosting but there's no indication of changes in size changes the size and therefore length of time to export (generally). Tho Apple Devices produces a "protected MPEG-4" movie and Web Hosting a "Quicktime" movie.
Any suggestions on choices for export?
OR
Has anyone had problems withi export time and then solved them? If so, how?
Any other tips appreciated.

My workflow for a YouTube project is:
Completely render the project before exporting.
Export to whatever the current codec is set for (so... just Export with current settings), typically ProRes 422(HQ) [my general preference established when creating a project] or sometimes ProRes LT and if necessary, ProRes 4444.  It really doesn't matter, when the project is completely rendered and exporting to a ProRes format, the export is about 1/5 to 1/2 run time (about 2 - 5 minutes for every 10 of video -- probably dependent on your storage bandwidth.)
Exporting H.264 for YouTube of Vimeo straight out of FCPX is *absolutely pointless* since FCPX does not offer any quality options (always exports highest quality H.264) and YouTube and others are just going to recompress down to their limit anyway.  I never give YT that opportunity...
I use Quicktime 7 Pro (about 100,000 times easier than compressor [hyperbole]) to transcode to YouTube specifications. The maximum bandwidth YT will "place" is 5Mbps... so I transcode to, at most, 5Mbps.  Turn on Auto Key Frames; Turn off Frame Reordering; Data Rate Restrict to 5000 kbits/sec; Optimize for Streaming; Compressor Quality (max available) to High; Encoding to Best Quality (Multi-pass).  For the Size options, I use the HD settings from the top section (anything below the start of NTSC will create broadcast tv "safe" video [overscan] and will not be completely compatible with digital targets such as YT [it will be smaller].) I also set Preserve Aspect Ratio Using Letterbox (YT used to have problems with 1920x1080 video being a little "squished" vertically to compensate for the transport controls... probably just habit now.)  Audio: Format AAC; Sample Rate 48000; Variable bit rate ~192kbps. And check the Prepare for Internet Streaming checkbox and select Fast Start.  Except for the variable bit rate audio and the letterboxing stuff, these are the specifications YT put down in its documention.
Converting from the ProRes output from FCPX to the H.264 for YT in QT7Pro is actually faster than trying to export H.264 directly out of FCPX (and compressor for that matter...)
I find if you simply change the m4v filletype to .mov, you don't need all the web page stuff that gets generated, you can simply load the video up in a browser from a direct URL.  Exporting to Apple Devices is a quick way to transcode 1080 out of FCPX to the smaller sized 720 video when necessary.
Here's an example of an .m4v Apple Devices video with the filetype manually changed to .mov:
http://sight-creations.com/video/2.5demo_noPS.mov
Will it upload to YT? Yep: here's the proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH1mIli8EpA (but this one has no audio -- be very careful about the audio settings of what you upload to YT... they don't like Linear PCM [AIFF, WAV, etc... YT wants AAC])

Why is it taken so long and seem to stop but the activity status goes up ever so slowley???? Im using an iMac  7,1   2.4 GHz with 6GB of memory running 10.8.2 what am I doing wrong???

Rendering will take a very long time  - I once needed 6 hours for a shorter high definition movie with plenty of effects.
What theme are you using and what settings?
The "places" theme needs a good network connection.
And the finished movie will need plenty of disk space.
And the finished movie will need plenty of disk space. Have you checked the available  space on your disk?
What exactly happens when Aperture fails to render the movie? Are there any diagnostics, error messages in the console window, that relate to Aperture? Does Aperture alway stop at the same image or video clip?
if all fails, you could render your slideshow in two parts and combine the two videos on your DVD.

  • LR4 - Anyone notice slower export times - RAW to JPG?

I read through the "Lightroom 4 is slow" thread - very good reading. I have noticed many of the same issues & hope Adobe is paying attention to that thread!
No one mentioned a slowdown in exporting RAW files to JPG. My average time for exporting Canon 7D CR2 files to full sized 300dpi JPGs in LR 3 is about 5.3 seconds per file. The same exports in LR 4 are about 8 seconds per file.
I can learn to live with this increased exporting time. I'm curious as to whether anyone else is experiencing this.

Yes.  For me, Canon G12 & 40D RAW files are taking twice as long to export under LR4 than under 3.6 - 16 secs vs 8 secs after the same processing.  But I am also seeing the same general latency problems identified in other threads here.  I've reverted back to 3.6 after trying every possible workaround posted so far - LR4 is unusable for me.

  • Dreadful export time

    Hi,
I'm exporting a reference movie for a producer to screen, and a native 5 minute HD clip (not changing any export settings) is taking 15 minutes or so. I've tried several combinations of movies, smaller size, least quality, etc, and these take longer at every turn. Is the long export time my HD fate? Or is there an alternative anyone uses that is FASTER? It's just for reference, so speed is the most important factor.
Thanks for any suggestions, John O

    HD means what flavor?
If it is HDV, that is a computational intensive codec and takes a while.
    A faster computer would assist.

  • Premiere Pro export issues. Unknown error messages, extremely slow export times, strange I/O & disk usage

    Hello,
I'm hoping I can start getting answers to some big issues I've been having running Premiere pro. I've had similar issues with CS6 but it seems like with CC and every recent update, the problem hasn't been resolved, its even worse.
The main issue I have is seeing the 'unknown error' message everytime I try to export a file. I'm working with RED footage. When I turn off the CUDA support, I can export without the error but my export time goes from a few minutes to sometimes hours in the render time!
I've looked through pages and pages of forums and there are so many people saying the same thing, with millions of opinions of what the problem is. Regardless, the only thing I tried that worked so far is turning off the CUDA support.
Now something I recently noticed, is that the difference isn't the GPU usage, I still show GPU being used at 500mb or 1gb out of the 2gb that it has (GTX 680)
The strange thing is without the mercury playback option, I'm seeing that disk usage and I/O go way down to kbs from a very high number. This would make sense why I'm seeing such huge changes in render times even though it still shows my 6 core CPU maxed out and ram over 40gb out of 64 that are installed.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what may be happening here? Its the only thing that has plagued my system using Premiere since day one and there seems to be no way around it..

Best way to get a real answer is go to the Tweaker's Page, download the most recent PPBM benchmark test, and run it. It's a folder that has a resource monitoring/logging program and a PrPro project with files that is short but HEAVY in effects, both AE and PrPro, so it tests all parts of a system's capabilities from disc in/out to GPU capability/use to CPU, fsb, RAM, you name it ... and after sending that back in you get a complete report on where your computer did well and what the choke-points were.
Also ... over on the Hardware forum is the place where the techies amongst us hang ...

  • Export time in Premiere/ME 130+ hours

Adobe Premiere 6.0.0 and Media Encoder 6.0.0.382 on Mac 10.6.8 using SSD drive for progams and OWC harddrive for projects/files.
I am working on CS6 CC, I finished a 20 minute edit. It has minor levels/3 way color, some warp stabilizer--but nothing external as of yet. I have about 5 video tracks and 10 audio tracks. This is my first export since upgrading to CS6--I am trying to export a h.264 HD vimeo file (tried both 720 and 1080).
My issue is that when I export either from premiere pro or from media encoder, the export time starts at about 2 and a half hours at first then slowly counts up instead of counting down. It has reached up to 130 hours (after exporting for 30 hours) before I stopped it to try a lower quality. I have been trying to export this project for four days. It seems that all three times I tried in media encoder, the time is still adding but the output preview is stuck on one frame (which was a different frame in each export).
I would say that I do not have the fastest and most upgraded computer, but I know that it worked fine before with CS5.

Thank you Joe for responding. I was very hopeful that this would be the solution. I removed all of the warp stabilizers and it appeared that it was working. The time evened out at about 4 hours but was still going up and down between 3-4 hours (at least it was going down at all). I left it with 2 hours left and I have come back to find it like it was before.  The time is going up on the "remaining time" and the preview is stuck on the same image.
Has it stopped working? Or is it really taking this long? (And why is it stuck on the preview frame).
Thanks for any help in advance.

  • Export Time column to Excel

I know SSRS doesn't really have a time data type outside of the datetime type, but I'm trying to have a time column which exports to excel as a time data type.  I've tried a few different ways, but the only way that seems to convert over is having the
textbox expression =TimeValue("00:30:00").  The problem is this creates a datetime and displays the date portion.  I've tried using custom formats of hh:mm:ss, and those look fine while running the report, but excel sees it as a negative datetime
    which produces a malformed value.
To clarify by example, I have a time 00:30:00 which exists in a textbox on the report that I want to export to excel as 00:30:00 but as a data type of Time so that if someone were to write excel formulas based off of those cells, it would be able to perform
    time-based arithmetic on them.
    Any ideas?

    Bin Long,
I'm wanting to preserve the datatype such that Excel recognizes the column as a Time type.  Formatting the column will make it look right, but it will be recognized as a string in Excel.
    Ravi,
This functionality also does not preserve the actual datatype.  It is really just a wrapper for the format function.  What I need is for the data itself in the column to be recognized as a Time datatype in Excel and not just be formatted
    like one.
I'm getting the feeling this just isn't possible in SSRS which is disappointing.  I've tried writing custom code for it and creating custom types but neither of these work either.  I have also looked into converting the column into a SQL time type
(newly available in 2008 R2), but that also isn't giving me the desired result.  I feel that SSRS is really lacking in the available datatypes arena.

  • Share and Export time extreme

Started using Final Cut Pro X and I like a lot of the new features. One thing is concerning me is Sharing or Exporting time. I had a 2 hour training video that I needed to export to mp4 file.  I tried many different methods using Final Cut Pro X and Compressor and the time on an 8 Core with 10 Gig of ram was 14 hours. I checked  the processor uses during the export and all processors were running near max. Unless I am doing something wrong this seems extreme. Any suggestions?

  • Export time estimation of Essbase

I understand that the database export time of Essbase should depends on the database size, disk IO rate, CPU, and other factors. However any high level estimation of experience on the time estimation? For example, if we have a database of 100GB on SAN disk array with Windows Server 2003 of dual CPU, say, what will be the rough estimate of a database export task? Will it be 4 hours, 10 hours, or 40 hours?
Or any experience tried before and can give us some real example for sharing?

    2) You run parallel export of the same database with multiple threads
RegardsThanks for your experience sharing. 80GB export requires 3 hours is not bad. I heard that there are another case that requires 20 hours for 20GB database. Maybe there are some hardware or disk configuration difference.
What is the hardware configuration for your 80GB database level 0 export?

You need a larger drive or an external drive - they OS needs a minimum of 10GB just for normal operation so you are already experiancing degraded preformance - if yo do not get more space you will start losing data
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Long export times

My company is moving over to Premiere Pro CC from FCP 7. As a relatively newer user of Premiere Pro CC (2014v8.1) I'm trying to figure out how to set my system for faster exports.
    For Example;
I edited a project in 720p (media was shot in 4K-Sony SxS) import and playback were fine until adding basic Color correction. Then extremely choppy playback until I rendered the timeline.
    Exported the 14:27 timeline to XDcam422HD 60(50mbps) 59.94fps with a data rate 50.11Mbits/s.
It took  1hour and 18minutes to export!
For an experiment, I re-edited the exact sequence in Final Cut Pro X 10.10.4 (I have a copy on the same machine) Did the same export.
Both Files are identical in size, Mbits.sec, etc.  The Export time was 7 Minutes!
I am sure there has to be a group of settings that I am not aware, that I haven't tweaked or modified to improve the export times.
Like I said the company is moving us to Premiere ProCC and I want to make sure I can export nearly as quickly. These export times seem unbelievably long and must not have something not set correctly.
    My Sysytem is:
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    3.5 GHz 6 core Xeon E5
Graphics card: AMD Firepro D500 3072
    16GB Ram
    Yosemite 10.10.1
    Premiere Pro CC 2014:
    V8.1
    Mercury Transit is enabled
    13 GB allocated to PPro
Any help would be appreciated as we will roll this out division wide (about 35 edit stations) within a year.
    Thanks in Advance
    Mark

For those interested, This has been solved by removing the "adjust color" filter from my timeline and using the the "use previews" check box. Render speed increased to just 11 minutes. Thanks

  • Extremely long Master File Sharing/Export times (MP4)

I, too, it seems, am having extremely long Sharing times with my FCP X project(s).  It's a one hour, 50 minute HD video.   Nothing fancy, just a couple talking heads comprised of 7  .mov files and appx. 65 graphics and black generators as B-Roll.  When I share it to a Master File as an MP4 video it takes nearly 36 hours to complete.
The Transcoding takes more than 8 hours before it gets to the export phase.  I have "Create Optimized Media" and "Create Proxy Media"checked in the FCP X Prefs and have Background Rendering switched off, FWIW.
I have a 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2012) 8GB RAM, 1TB HD and running 10.9.2.  I don't know if it makes a difference but I have Perian and Flip4Mac installed.
Activity Monitor shows that I'm using 6.34GB physical memory and 10.5GB Virtual Memory.  The Memory Pressure graph is green.  Activity Monitor shows these processes: a kernel task of 750MB, FCP using 600MB and ProTranscoder Tool using 286MB.
I've shared copies of this same video to YouTube and it took about just as long but it shared successfully.
I was just wondering if there was any way to cut down on the rendering time - which, based on what I've seen in the discussions may not really be possible on a 2-hour video.  I will have another video in a week or so to finish and it's the same length.  Also, I may have a couple more projects in the future (if the client likes these) that will be similar.  My goal is to not have to wait days for a project export/share to be complete.  Worse, as was the case today, I decided to add one more 5-second graphic and had to re-do the entire Transcode/Export process.
I looked into getting Compressor but that doesn't seem really necessary or beneficial in my case and, based on the reviews, can actually add even MORE time to the process, it seems.
Thanks for any suggestions or pointers.  I'll continue to look through the discussions for info.
    Rick

Since I just downloaded the trial version and started this project I'm still learning as I go. At this point, I may actually end up having to purchase FCP (which I actually REALLY like - except for the hideous export times).  I used the OLD Final Cut Pro a good many years ago on a G-4 Quicksilver so this is somewhat of a re-learning experience.
When I began the project I'm trying to finish (now that I recall) I actually exported it from iMovie to FCP.  That's when I needed help using the generators because I needed to cover the 16:9 video while using a 4:3 graphic.  I began using this current version of FCP without initially setting or changing any preferences.  So, I believe the Optimize was already toggled.  I wasn't sure abut the proxy but you cleared that up for me.  Thanks!  I just made sure those two were toggled for this latest share/export because of something I read about maximizing (which I'm doing a lot of these days!).
The second program's .mov files I shot and began editing were imported directly into FCP and, again, I don't recall that I toggled the Optimize option.  I know I was sure to copy both programs' files to their project and not keep them in place (avoiding potential file issues).  I also exported that second, similar, video at one point (probably because of the issues with the first program) and it, too, took a comparable amount of time to export.  It is an hour and fifteen munutes long.
Since my MBP is new, I got the (what I assumed to be)was the maximum RAM. I've since learned you can (expensively) actually upgrade it to 16GB.  I'll opt for a SSD first, tho ;-)
When I get a chance after I'm finished with this current export ( which occur tomorrow sometime :-/ ) I'll try the Pro Res export and then try the MPEG Streamclip (which I have and use frequently) option.
I'm using a new Toshiba Canvio 3.0 Plus external 1.5TB (non-Thunderbolt) drive formatted Extended/Journaled/GUID partition to store my project and actually did quit FCP and restarted the MBP prior to beginning this export with no browsers running.
And, fwiw, at 6:30pm EST the project is 44% of the way through the Transcoding process.
Thanks for your help and time.

  • Extremely Long Export Times

Having some issues with export times in FCP. We don't do alot of editing in my office and we've just upgraded to HD for some of our stuff and the export times when trying to make .movs is taking forever.
Our original footage is recorded as .WMV 1280 x 720. We have Flip4Mac, but were having issues with render times and export times when trying to export as .wmv(One 15 minute video took over 4 hours to export and then at 90% complete Flip4Mac crashed FCP) so I converted the files to .mov using Ultra MP4 Video Converter. This helped with the rendering, but our export times are still ridiculous...even for HD...I would think. Like I said we haven't worked much with editing especially with HD footage.
Anyway, I had 7 sequences totaling around an hour and a half of footage and did a Batch Export to make them Quicktime Movies. It's been over 14 hours of Export Time and I'm still only at 52% complete.
Am I doing something wrong...is there anything I can do at any step along the way to make both my rendering and exporting times shorter?

Perhaps now would be a good time to explain your workflow.
This is how I deal with non-native source material ....
    • move original material to hard drive on computer. Put in scratch folder.
    • open up Compressor and import all files to be converted.
    • select preset that will convert to ProResLT at an editing framerate, video size and audio sampling rate/depth.
    • launch batch. Note: if you have a multi core Mac, using quick clusters in QMaster will speed this process markedly.
    • once process is complete, import ProResLT files into FCP and edit. Once finished, export using "current settings" & "self-contained".
    • open up Compressor again and import the exported ProResLT files.
    • select the preset for the delivery format (h.264 or whatever) and launch the batch.
    you are done.

  • FCPX 10.0.3 Export times are huge....

Is anyone having issues with FCPX export times?
I just tried to export VIA Share H.264, a 10 minute FullHD clip shot with an HXR-NX5U. They were imported directly from the memory card and encoded by FCPX itself.
The media on the timeline, I would say is heavy. It is full of text and motion graphics for the first 60 seconds and the rest are clips with 2 to 3 effects each, transitions and music clips.
I am running the latest versions of OSX and FCPX on the latest iMac fully loaded. 3.4 i7, 16GB, 2GB GPU.
However and regardless of the wealth of information that are considered variables, which I indicated above - know this - a project that was extremely similar to the above in all aspects in FCPX 10.0.2 and OSX Lion 10.7.2 would have been spit out in under 20 minutes to an h.264.
I'm wondering why this is happening and if anyone else is having this change?

    Hey Macvideo HD,
Thanks for your input here.... Didn't notice any real changes with 10.0.2 to 10.0.3 in terms of export speeds. The weird thing is that some times it seems that FCP X runs better one day than the next. I'm constantly repairing disk permissions and making sure I'm not doing any other items when I'm exporting.
I have a project (28 mins) open now that I started last night to render and its still rendering. Roughly 30% left to render the whole timeline. So roughly 16 hours to render thus far....
I agree with you the Caldigit is working well....
Good question regarding how long Compressor will take to export with background rendering turned off.... Also, I'll have to export using H.264 and compare the two times.
I agree with you that reinstalling Lion will be my last option.
NOTE: did find out some help to cut down the exporting times using Compressor.... When you send the timeline (project) to compressor click on the menu APPLE QMASTER. Select Share This Computer Next click the box Share this computer and select as QuickCluster with services. Next under the Services section click on the Compressor box and then click Options a drop down menu will appear and allow you to select how many processors you want to use. I selected 16! I have noticed a big change in speed improvment's to export 3 minute timelines in roughly 10-12 minutes :-) When it was 30 minutes in FCP X. Now I have to try it with the 28min timeline. Also, I'm exporting using the ProRes 422 codec.
    Thanks again for your input!
