Trying to stroke a path

I'm using Photoshop CS3 extended and am trying to stoke a path with the brush tool. I'm able to stroke the path but when you look closely at the resulting stroke, it seems to have a rough edge- as if circles were laid down very close together along the path. Is there a way to get a very clean hard edged stroke so that you don't see those circles when enlarged? I've tried all of the brush settings in the brush palette and can't seem to get rid of the roughness. Am I doing something wrong?
Richard

You could just reset the Brush tool from the drop-down menu at the top right of the Brushes palette.

  • Separating strokes & offset paths from text?

    I need to outline large titles to be output to a large format inkjet printer with a contour cut on a CNC router. I often need to create strokes then convert them to outlines or sometimes create offset paths so that I can use that layer as a through cut (contour guide/line). Sometimes it involves having a clipped image that is outlined and with an offset path for the cut line which may lie in the middle of the stroke/outline. So there could be several lines around an image. I need to separate all of these lines from each other so that I can put them on their own layers for production purposes. I would also need to separate the outlined stroke if I am clipping an image into the main text. Otherwise the image will clip out to the edge of the stroke. If I can separate all of this I can work much easier in layers. Is there a way to easily separate or disassociate each line from one another? I've tried the release compound paths groups etc. None of these seem to be effective. I have to go through a lot of steps and time to manually do these tasks.

    It was suggested that I provide an example to illustrate my question. So here it is. LINK:  http://www.sendspace.com/file/7gqfn3
    Old habits die hard. Over the past 20+ years I have worked extensively with vector art. Much of it in app called Flexisign. Which has/had great features for working with vectors. This was before layers ever existed. So some of my thinking is still locked into old ways of working with a single layer. But what I liked about it was that I could easily separate, either by ungrouping or un-compounding, do what I needed to do then re-compound etc. Outlines, offset paths, were never locked or permanently attached to another component. Every path created was an actual hard vector line that I could easily manipulate. Strokes did not even exist so they were made with outlines, inlines, etc. In the illustration attached, I could have done all of this in seconds on one layer. Although I could move things forward or backwards and lock colors individually (precursor to layers I guess). I would start with the text and do multiple strokes or outlines as needed then separate them and group or compound as needed. I'm finding it difficult to separate some paths onto it's own so that I can eliminate or alter various paths.
    Once I figured out how I could do it Illustrator, it does not appear that complex at all. But it takes a lot more steps than I am accustomed to. And I have to think in terms of layers more often to solve some of these issues. But as you'll see at the end, I still wish I could simply create a path separate it from the the rest of the artwork. I'm thinking that the Offset Path tool would be idea for making my cut line except that I cannot separate it.
    Anyway, I created a sample of what I was trying to do. These are the steps I used to make my project. I have not had a chance yet to try out some of the suggestions, but I can see already that they use techniques I have never tried and in some cases even heard of. But wow, I am amazed at the help and suggestions. Thank you all.

  • Can't stroke a path with any tool in PS CS3

    Hi, guys, I'm on a G5 Powermac, 1,5 GB RAM, 2GHz, running OS X 10.4.11, and I just got CS3 Web Premium. I'm discovering all the little changes the hard way. In Photoshop I have found that I can't stroke a path: I draw a path with the pen tool, check all the settings to make sure the brush is at 100%, it's a brush, I'm on the correct layer, the layer is at 100%, the path is selected, etc. I click on "stroke path" in the path menu, and what I get is unusable. There is a correctly-sized dot under each anchor point, but no stroke. If I delete the path, I'm left with these dots. It occurred to me that it could be an airbrush setting issue; I've seen airbrush strokes that looked a bit like this, but they didn't fall where the anchor points are. I called Applecare about it. We went over all the settings, found nothing out of order, they came up with a workaround that I can use pro tem, but finally they requested a copy of the file I was working on, and suggested that my video board driver was out of date. Problem still there. anybody heard about it?

    McCann...
    From everything I've been able to gather, the Dev teams for Photoshop and Illustrator don't share muchif anythingin the way of common tool coding. It sure would be nice if the vector tools in PS worked the same way, and with as many options as the AI tools, but they don't.
    Quite frankly, it makes absolutely NO sense to me, from an application integration standpoint, or from a conservation of resources standpoint. But historically, I think it's because the 2 applications were created independently from each other, and there's so much legacy coding that isn't easily shared. IMHO, there are many good reasons to recommend that PS and AI be rebuilt from the ground up so that they can take advantage of a wider base of common coding. It might be a PITA early on, but it could only make things easier in the future versions.
    So, no, Photoshop has never been intended to "replace" AI, no matter how many similar functions they may have.
    On the other hand, from a bottom-line standpointwhy sell one app, when you can compel power users to buy 2?

  • Hi I am trying to find absolute path for emmet extension dreamweaver cc 2014.1

    Hi I am trying to find absolute path for emmet preferences in dreamweaver cc 2014.1 tried stack overflow
    still cant get it to work get error message folder not found. Any help greatly appreciated thanks.

    "...emmet preferences..."? You mean http://www.emmett.io? Have you asked them?
    Anyhow, the docs say this -
    Emmet for Dreamweaver supports extensions: you should open Commands > Emmet > Emmet Preferences dialog and enter absolute path to extentions folder. Unfortunately, Dreamweaver doesn’t support folder picking dialog so you have to type it manually.

  • Pardon my ignorance, but, any idea on how do i stroke a path?

    I have drawn a path and I see that in the edit tab there's a Stroke option, however the option is not active so I am not sure how should I go about this.
    I want to stroke the path with a scattered brush. thank you.

    Also just after you make your path, right click inside the path area
    and choose Stroke Path.
    Before you stroke the path make sure you have set all the brush options
    you want.

  • Is it possible to "stroke" a path (not a shape)?

    Hello,
    I have Illustrator 16.0.4 on a Mac 10.6.8.
    What I want to achieve is have a stroke (effect or appearance?) on an open path. And keep that path editable (not convert it to a shape). Below is and example of what I'm trying to do:
    On the left I have a path (with rounded ends) that I have used the Width Tool on. I want it to stay a path, but have a black "stroke" surrounding it. I've tried Stylize>Drop shadow with a hard edge, but it is always off-set. I've tried Stylize>Outer Glow (set to black color and normal blend mode) but always get a soft edge. I have tried adding a second stroke to this path in the Appearance Panel and making it larger, but it does not look right. Is there someway of adding the appearance of a stroke but keep the "shape" as a path?
    (I'm more familiar with Photoshop; the way I would do it there would be Layer>Layer Style>Stroke)
    Thanks,
    Charles

  • Stroke a path image and how to delete it or move it.

    Hi, All.
    A quick question about paths and the stroke path command. I have create paths and stroked them using the brush tool. This part works fine. However, I am not able to make changes to this stroked path image (in my case it looks like a wireframe image since I am only applying a stroke but not a fill. I also tried deleting these but haven't been successful.
    How can this be done ? Once a path has been stroked how do I edit it (change stroke size, change color, delete stroke, …) ?
    Thank you in advance/

    Use the direct selection tool to select the path and its points for editing. The path it self can be deleted from the paths panel.

  • Strokes and paths - help!

    Apologies if this query is a bit basic. I am quite new to Photoshop PS4 and may be missing something obvious!
    I'm trying to create a stroked line (to form a route trail for walkers to follow) on a base map. I have been using the Pen tool to create a path, and have then applied a red brushstroke. So far so good. However, if I return to the path, and 'direct select' an anchor point to modify or move the curves or direction of the pathway (or add new anchor points), the old position of the stroke remains and doesn't follow my newly modified path. It seems the path and the stroke function separately. Is there a way of stroking the path as I create the path? How can I modify a path and stroke at the same time?
    Thanks!

    Yeah, Photoshop doesn't work that way. You're not actually stroking the path, you're applying a stroke to that path onto the current layer, but the path and layer are seen independent.
    In essence, you're not stroking the path; the path is being placed into the layer, depending on that at-that-time shape of the path.

  • Eclipse nightmare: Trying to use Build Path without muddling up the project

    I'm working on a team project for the first time ever, which is a little scary. We are using Subclipse. As soon as I downloaded the project, I noticed that I don't get any error warnings. Soon after, I noticed that Ctrl H fails to search the project.
    I thought this was all Subclipse's fault, and tried a clumsy workaround by copying the project. I had noticed that the package icon doesn't appear for the folders holding the source files and realized this is the problem. I guess Eclipse doesn't know which files are the source files. I would have thought it could tell because they end in .java, but that shows how little I know.
    After wrestling with this for hours, I figured out that I could use Build Path -> Use as source folder. For a split second, I thought I had finally solved the problem. But then all of a sudden tons of error messages showed up in every file. It turns out that when you use Build path -> Use as source folder, it moves your source folder and changes the names of the subfolders. So how on earth do I just tell Eclipse where my source files are without it moving everything around and screwing up the whole project?
    Please, somebody tell me what is going on before I pull all of my hair completely out.

    Can you tell us more about your project folder structure (as it exists in SVN)?
    Generally speaking, here's what I would do when start a new Eclipse project from SVN using Subclipse:
    1) Delete your current project and start clean.
    2) Open the SVN Repositories view in Eclipse
    3) Right-click the folder you are checking out as your project (for example, if your project is called ProjectFoobar and contains a trunk, right-click the trunk folder... don't check out all of the branches--use svn switch instead) and do a Checkout.
    4) Select 'Check out as a project in the workspace
    5) Give it a project name.
    6) 'Check out HEAD revision' (presumably)
    7) Depth: fully recursive
    8) Next
    9) Workspace location: make sure this the workspace you intend to create the project in
    8) Finish
    Hope that helps.

  • Giving text outline stroke and path and uniting with other paths

    How do I give Lucida handwriting a 2pt outline stroke, give it an outline path, then unite it with another shape path without the text losing it's outline stroke??  I can't bold Lucida handwriting as it only has an italic option, so need to give it an outline stroke to achieve a bold letter.  As soon as I give it an outline path and unite it to other shape paths the 'bold'ness disappears and it reverts to it's original size.  I hope this makes sense!  Any help would be appreciated.

    You are welcome, drive.
    What you will be looking for is what is called a flowing script (probably a casual flowing script); script fonts are those remembling handwriting.
    You may have a look at this website, where you can click (Formal or) Casual Flowing Script and see many different ones (which may give you an overview and possibly some inspiration),
    http://www.bowfinprintworks.com/Script07Pg1.html
    or you can just search the web for (casual) flowing script font.

  • IL CS5 Stroke - Compound path cant be less than 1pt

    Just started with IL CS5 and think I found a glitch.
    Compound path can't be less than 1pt.
    Furthermore when you offset path, the newly created path minumum stroke can't be less than 1pt.
    what is going on.
    Also turning on and off stroke moves object down and left for 0.5pt
    It like IL is taking the inner corner of the stroke as the ancor.
    this is weard.
    Further more offset path seams to be off.
    Has anybody else experienced this.

    Nice it worked.
    But what a dump setting.
    cheers

  • Trying to understand the PATH variable

    Greetings,
    I read that the PATH variable specifies a set of directories where executable programs are located. But if I use "echo $PATH" in Terminal to view the directories, it does not list the Applications folder or the Downloads folder or any of the other places I have programs. So how to they run?
    Thanks

    The PATH variable is a list of search paths used by a particular shell. Basically, when you enter a command in a command-line context (such as from within Terminal.app), the unix system will search for executables in all of the folders listed in the PATH variable, running the first it finds.
    Apps that are run from the GUI are launched by the launch services daemon, which takes care of all the details of locating and loading executable. Launch services maintains a database of app locations, so it wouldn't need to search along unix PATHs to find what it needs.

  • Trying to Get a Path using CFBundleCopyResourceURL

    So I'm having an issue loading a resource. I'm using Carbon/C++. The problem is that when I try to load a file path with the following code the string returned is a cut off version of what I really need. When debugging the call to CFBundleCopyResourceURL looks like the culprit since the path it returns is a bunch of characters short of the actual path.
    const char* Game::GetResourcePath(const char* resourceName, const char* resourceType)
    CFBundleRef mainBundle = CFBundleGetMainBundle();
    CFStringRef resName =
    CFStringCreateWithCString(kCFAllocatorDefault, resourceName,
    GetApplicationTextEncoding());
    CFStringRef resType =
    CFStringCreateWithCString(kCFAllocatorDefault, resourceType,
    GetApplicationTextEncoding());
    CFURLRef URLref = CFBundleCopyResourceURL( mainBundle, resName, resType, NULL );
    CFStringRef texBoxPath = CFURLCopyPath(URLref);
    const char* path= CFStringGetCStringPtr(texBoxPath, GetApplicationTextEncoding());
    return path;
    }

    What environment are you using? Ensure the Oracle JDBC driver is on your classpath.
    Note that oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver is old, oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver should be used for Oracle JDBC now.
    Try calling jdbc DriverManager with your URL directly, does it work?

  • Why is Illust. CS6 generating an additional rectangular path when converting brush stroke to path?

    I depend on custom brushes where I convert those brushes to outlines and then "Unite" those objects in Pathfinder.
    I never had any problems through CS5, but now CS6 is adding an additional rectangular path surrounding the object, so when I go to unite multiple objects I get a bunch of united rectangles instead of pine needles, for example. What the heck.
    Thanks in advance for any solutions to this issue.

    In older versions of Illustrator (about AI 9 or 10) there was a trick to avoid getting similar superfluous paths by first selecting all objects (or just the brush objects), then applying the Effect > Distort and Transform > Transform Effect in placebo mode (just take the default values).
    After that, you could go to Object > Expand Appearance.
    Not sure if that bumpy workaround still works in AI CS6.
