Trying to Understand Login and State Management

Hi,
I'm relatively new to Flex 3.  I'm using the builder.
Here's my core problem.  I'm coming from a ColdFusion background, where users run to the server for any type of authentication and sessions rule until they're timed out.
My goal is to understand how ColdFusion (with a SQL Server backend) and Flex work together to help a user login and helps that same user maintain it's state.
I understand so far that Flex can use a RemoteObject to go back and use ColdFusion services to authenticate a user.  I'd like to go this route.
My problem is understanding how does Flex maintains information about the particular logged in user.  Am I correct in thinking that once I return information from ColdFusion about the user, I create a global object in Flex that keeps the user's information that I can refer to as I transition between the View States (states) in my Flex application?  And I can just refer to that local user object if I need to make sure I'm still dealing with the same user?
Is it really that simple?  Also, I've had been trying to review COUNTLESS articles on the Login/Authentication process.  One that I came across suggested placing a UUID on the server for a particular logged in user, and then I just return that back to Flex.  Does anyone recommend that?  I know that when I used sessions in ColdFusion, the server did this, so I'm not sure which routes to take.
By the way, I'm designing an Intranet that's only accessible from our internal network, but I want my colleagues to be able to login securely.  And like I said before, I'm using  ColdFusion (and CF services), SQL Server, and Flex 3.
I'm teaching myself Flex through the Video Training - Flex 3, but haven't seen much on this yet.  If someone could provide a good outline of the Best Practices to Login, Authenticate, and Maintain Session State throughout a Flex Application (using a ColdFusion and SQL Server backend), I'd be highly appreciative.
Thanks!
mfho

Hi,
Thanks for responding.
Here's one solution I found located on http://www.blogna.org/blog/adobe-flash/flex-and-flash-rias-authentication-sessions-scalabi lity/#comment-843
A user submits their username and password inside a Flex form.
ColdFusion Server receives the username and password and verifies them against the users in a database.
If the user is valid, A KEY IS CREATED, stored in the database with a time stamp, then sent back to the user.
The key is stored in a local variable inside the Flex application.
Now, any time the application needs to retrieve data from a service that requires the user to be logged in, it will pass the key with the request. So, instead of a method like getUserInfo(), now it will look like getUserInfo(key).
The service will use the key to determine if the user is authenticated, and if they are, it will send back the appropriate data.
Here are my questions:
1.  Do I have to have a key sent back to Flex?  Can't I just pull all of the data for that particular user at the time and send it back to Flex?
I guess I'm not understanding first why I need a key or session id from ColdFusion, but if I do, I guess I could create it using the CreateUUID() in ColdFusion, send it back to Flex, store it in a local var and then reference that each time I needed to do something that's user sensitive.
Would that work?
I guess I'd prefer not to use a session ID if I don't have to.
Thanks!

  • Need help understanding profiles and color management

    I made the big leap from inexpensive inkjets to:
    1 Epson 3800 Standard
    2 Spyder3Studio
    I have a Mac Pro Quad, Aperture, PS3, etc.
    I have a steep learning curve ahead, here's what I've done:
    1 Read a lot of books, watched tutorials, etc.
    2 Calibrated the monitor
    3 Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
    What I've found:
    1 The sample print produced by Spyder3Print, using the profile I created with color management turned off in the print dialog, looks very good.
    2 When I get into Aperture, and apply the .icc profile I created in the proofing profile with onscreen proofing, the onscreen image does not change appreciably compared with the no proof setting. It gets slightly darker
    3 When I select File>Print image, select the profile I created, turn off color management and look a the resulting preview image it looks much lighter and washed out than the onscreen image with onscreen proofing turned on.
    4 When I print the image, it looks the same as was shown in the print preview...light and washed out, which is much different than what is shown in edit mode.
    5 When I open PS3 with onscreen soft-proofing, the onscreen image is light and washed out...just like displayed in PS3 preview. If I re-edit the image to look OK onscreen, and print with the profile and color management turned off, the printed image looks OK.
    So, why am I confused?
    1 In the back of my simplistic and naive mind, I anticipated that in creating a custom printer profile I would only need to edit a photo once, so it looks good on the calibrated screen, and then a custom printer profile will handle the work to print a good looking photo. Different profiles do different translations for different printers/papers. However, judging by the PS work, it appears I need to re-edit a photo for each printer/paper I encounter...just doesn't seem right.
    2 In Aperture, I'm confused by the onscreen proofing does not present the same image as what I see in the print preview. I'm selecting the same .icc profile in both locations.
    I tried visiting with Spyder support, but am not able to explain myself well enough to help them understand what I'm doing wrong.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
    You have understand that maintaining the colour is done by morphing the colourants, and you have understood that matching the digital graphic display (which is emissive) to the print from the digital graphic printer (which is reflective) presupposes a studio lighting situation that simulates the conditions presupposed in the mathematical illuminant model for media independent matching. Basically, for a display-to-print match you need to calibrate and characterise the display to something like 5000-55000 kelvin. There are all sorts of arguments surrounding this, and you will find your way through them in time, but you now have the gist of the thing.
    So far so good, but what of the problem posed by the digital graphic printer? If you are a professional photographer, you are dependent on your printer for contract proofing. Your prints you can pass to clients and to printers, but your display you cannot. So this is critical.
    The ICC Specification was published at DRUPA Druck und Papier in Düsseldorf in May 1995 and ColorSync 2 Golden Master is on the WWDC CD for May 1995. Between 1995 and 2000 die reine Lehre said to render your colour patch chart in the raw condition of the colour device.
    The problem with this is that in a separation the reflectance of the paper (which is how you get to see the colours of the colourants laid down on top of the paper) and the amount of colourant (solid and combinations of tints) gives you the gamut.
    By this argument, you would want to render the colour patch chart with the most colourant, but what if the most colourant produces artifacts? A safer solution is to have primary ink limiting as part of the calibration process prior to rendering of the colour patch chart.
    You can see the progression e.g. in the BEST RIP which since 2002 has been owned by EFI Electronics for Imaging. BEST started by allowing access to the raw colour device, with pooling problems and whatnot, but then introduced a primary ink limiting and linearisation.
    The next thing you need to know is what colour test chart to send to the colour device, depending on whether the colour device is considered an RGB device or a CMYK device. By convention, if the device is not driven by a PostScript RIP it is considered an RGB device.
    The colour patch chart is not tagged, meaning that it is deviceColor and neither CIEBased colour or ICCBased colour. You need to keep your colour patch chart deviceColor or you will have a colour characterisation of a colour managed conversion. Which is not what you want.
    If the operating system is colour managed through and through, how do you render a colour test chart without automatically assigning a source ICC profile for the colourant model (Generic RGB Profile for three component, Generic CMYK Profile for four component)?
    The convention is that no colour conversion occurs if the source ICC device profile and the destination ICC device profile are identical. So if you are targetting your inkjet in RGB mode, you open an RGB colourant patch chart, set the source ICC profile for the working space to the same as the destination ICC profile for the device, and render as deviceColor.
    You then leave the rendered colourant test chart to dry for one hour. If you measure a colourant test chart every ten minutes through the first hour, you may find that the soluble inkjet inks in drying change colour. If you wait, you avoid this cause of error in your characterisation.
    As you will mainly want to work with loose photographs, and not with photographs placed in pages, when you produce a contract proof using Absolute Colorimetric rendering from the ICC profile for the printing condition to the ICC profile for your studio printer, here's a tip.
    Your eyes, the eyes of your client, and the eyes of the prepress production manager will see the white white of the surrounding unprinted margins of the paper, and will judge the printed area of the paper relative to that.
    If, therefore, your untrimmed contract proof and the contract proof from Adobe InDesign or QuarkPress, or a EFI or other proofing RIP, are placed side by side in the viewing box your untrimmed contract proof will work as the visual reference for the media white.
    The measured reference for the media white is in the ICC profile for the printing condition, to be precise in the WTPT White Point tag that you can see by doubleclicking the ICC profile in the Apple ColorSync Utility. This is the lightness and tint laid down on proof prints.
    You, your client and your chosen printer will get on well if you remember to set up your studio lighting, and trim the blank borders of your proof prints. (Another tip: set your Finder to neutral gray and avoid a clutter of white windows, icons and so forth in the Finder when viewing.)
    So far, so good. This leaves the nittygritty of specific ICC profiling packages and specific ICC-enabled applications. As for Aperture, do not apply a gamma correction to your colourant patch chart, or to colour managed printing.
    As for Adobe applications, which you say you will be comparing with, you should probably be aware that Adobe InDesign CS3 has problems. When targetting an RGB printing device, the prints are not correctly colour managed, but basically bypass colour management.
    There's been a discussion on the Apple ColorSync Users List and on Adobe's fora, see the two threads below.
    Hope this helps,

  • Trying to understand Bill and exact dates of Fees.

    I am trying to figure out my bill. In particular why I am getting charged the Reconnect Fees when my phones were not disconnected this time.
    How do I tell when the reconnect fee was applied and for what billing period? I would like to know if the fees were from a past due or this current period.
    Is there a place where I can see the exact dates when the fees were applied? As of right now I know that we get charged a month ahead for each period but when I look at the bill it only shows the month behind. For example today is January 31 and my billing period when I view my bill on the website says December 27th, 2012 - January 26th, 2013. My past due amount which I just paid was the correct amount for not having the reconnect fee and but my remaining amount is showing the reconnect fee. I want to know if the reconnect fee is listed there from the month before, December, or if it is for the month of January. I do not remember my phones being turned off when I last paid the bill at the at the end of last December. I got the text message that my bill was due and I paid it. That is why I would like to know the exact date in which the fees were applied. Right now it looks as if it is being applied to the January billing period. Unless I am wrong and I was disconnected.
    If you all do not list the exact dates can you think about doing so? It would be a lot more helpful in understanding the bill when looking at it if we know the exact dates in which certain things are being applied. Right now the summary we get is a bit confusing as it is.

    Thanks tikibar1 that View Printable Bill helped a bit.

  • Trying to understand the PAUSE statement

    I am trying to use the following code:
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON VERIFY OFF
    ACCEPT i_name PROMPT 'Enter your name: '
    DECLARE
         v_name VARCHAR2(30) := '&i_name';
    BEGIN
         dbms_output.put_line('This is right before the PAUSE.');
         PAUSE 'Adjust paper and press RETURN to continue.';
         dbms_output.put_line('Your name is: ' || v_name);
    END;
    /But I am receiving these errors:
    ORA-06550: line 5, column 8:
    PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "Adjust paper and press RETURN to continue."
    when expecting one of the following:
    := . ( @ % ;
    The symbol ":=" was substituted for "Adjust paper and press RETURN to
    continue." to continue.Am I allowed to use the PAUSE statement within the PL/SQL block, or does it have to be before the DECLARE statement?
    If I am allowed to use it within the block, then why am I receiving an error? I tried both with and without the semicolon at the end of the PAUSE statement.
    On this site: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a82950/ch8.htm#1001319 it has the following example:
    SET PAUSE OFF
    PAUSE Adjust paper and press RETURN to continue.
    SELECT ...But why would you turn the pause OFF? And then when do you turn it ON? Also, that example seems to conflict with the advice listed here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14357/ch12040.htm#i2699261
    Which says: "You need to first, SET PAUSE text, and then SET PAUSE ON if you want text to appear each time SQL*Plus pauses."

    Pause is a sqlplus command so, no you cannot use it in a PL/SQL block. It is used to stop the display from scolling, generally after pagesize lines. It can also be used, as in the example you posted to stop the display and give some feedback to the user.
    The set pause off command will make sqlplus display all the output without stopping. The explicit pause <text> is a command that stop the display. You can set pause on so the display will stop after every pagesize lines. You can also do something like set pause Press any key to see more and the display will pause after pagesize lines anf disply the text in the set pause command as a prompt.
    You do know that this is all documented in the SQL Plus Users Guide right?

  • Trying to understand ViewStack and child creation

    I'm trying to work with the ViewStack, but keep on getting error 1009, which means that the object I'm trying to use is not created yet. I just dont understand why the object is not created and at which point will it get created.
    The attached code demonstrates my case. First time the combo box is changed, the error is reported and the value of t1.text is not changed. The second time the combo box is changed, the value changes, as it should.
    Now the question is, why is the object null on the first call? How to initialize the value and avoid this problem?

  • Trying to understand a callable statement

    i am having trouble understanding CallableStatements
    i have this code
    Connection conn = null;
    try
         conn = OdLauncher.getDbConnection(USERID, PWD, SERVER);
         CallableStatement cs = conn.prepareCall("{? = CALL " + QUERYPROC + "(?)}");
         //what do i set???
         //what do i register???
         cs.registerOutParameter(1,Types.INTEGER);
         cs.executeQuery();
         System.out.println("cs " + cs);
    catch(Exception e)
         e.printStackTrace();
    }what i am trying to do is query a stored proc to return a result set
    but im having trouble trying to figure out what the difference is between
    setting like setString(1, somethinghere);
    and registering
    cs.registerOutParameter(1,Types.INTEGER);
    i am not sure what it is i set and what it is i register???

    CallableStatement cs = conn.prepareCall("{? = CALL "
    " + QUERYPROC + "(?)}");In this form of syntax for the CallableStatement, the first question-mark [parameter] is the output parameter which is obtained from a RETURN within the stored procedure. For all I know, it is usually an integer to indicate the code [for success or error]. By registering the parameter for output, you can obtain the return value after the execution of the stored procedure using getInt().
    As opposed to this the setString() [or whatever yoyu would use for the other parameter] is an input to the stored procedure. I think this is mentioned in the API documentation too.

  • Trying to understand creating and using packages

    Hi all,
    I do not understand this problem... Package "shared.utilities" is an entire separate package from "alertsystem". When I comment out "package alertsystem", I get C:\Wdt\alertsystem\File_Handling.java:4: package shared.utilities does not exist
    import shared.utilities.*;
    ^
    Below is the code
    // package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    class File_Handling
         private long time_buff;
         private String alertDir;
         private String archPath;
         private SData buff;
    On the other hand, if I do NOT comment out "package alertsystem", no problem. I do not understand why I need to include "package alertsystem". If I am writing a simple module and want to use one of the library in "shared.utilities", do I always need to make sure all my codes come under a package?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    This is funny... if I do this....
    package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    class File_Handling
         private long time_buff;
         private String alertDir;
    without including the path to the jar file, NO PROBLEM during compilation and run (in this case, util.jar, which is actually the shared.utilities package). But, if I do
    // package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    I still get the same error problem...
    C:\Wdt\alertsystem\File_Handling.java:4: package shared.utilities does not exist
    import shared.utilities.*;
    In other words, if I include or I do not include the path of to the jar file and do this...
    package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    Then, No problem with compilation and running. However, if I do not include "package alertsystem", I get compilation problem.
    The jar file consists only of *.class files that I have compiled without a single problem. I included "package shared.utilities;" in all the files of the util.jar
    Funny isn't it?
    Thanks for responding.
    Hi,
    What's your classpath look like when you compile when
    you include the package and when you don't include the
    package? Is it when you compile or run the code?

  • Trying to understand blocksize and the correct sizing requirements..

    I'm getting the following error after migrating a cube from a 9.3 environment to an 11 environment while running a calc script - which by the way works fine in 9.3 with identical cache settings.
    Error: 1012704 Dynamic Calc processor cannot lock more than [2] ESM blocks during the calculation, please increase CalcLockBlock setting and then retry(a small data cache setting could also cause this problem, please check the data cache size setting).
    When applying the following formula to our environment I get 122.84 Allocateable blocks, if my math is correct. The error is stating "[2] ESM" blocks so I must be doing something wrong?
    Data Cache in K
    ______________ = Number of blocks that can be allocated
    Block Size in K
    block size     1651392/1024=1612.6875
    Cache     198107
    # of allocateable blocks     122.8427702
    The settings from our config file are as follows:
    CALCLOCKBLOCKHIGH 5500
    CALCLOCKBLOCKDEFAULT 3500
    CALCLOCKBLOCKLOW 100
    CalcCacheHigh 199229440
    CalcCacheDefault 104857600
    CalcCacheLow 52428800
    So what am I missing here, why the [2] ESM error? Is that a bogus error for a problem with the calc script I'm trying to run?
    Thanks for your help.
    Adam,

    OK, so even though I "thought" the setting survived a server restart I wen ahead and stopped and started the database and the settings applied and all seems to be good.
    Thanks for the feedback.

    I've had my BB for a few months now, and I used to be able to connect it to my laptop and sync Outlook data. Now it won't connect to the Desktop Manager any more. I always get an error message, and this is the technical data it "Sends" to whomever, in the error reporting:

    How do I get BB to connect to DM and start syncing again?
    Thanks for help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    i am seeing alot of sync issues lately, the forced windows security update last week looks like it might be the culprit. reinstalling DTM has fixed it for a couple PCs for me. just thinking if you are goign to uninstall 4.3, might as well upgrade on the install.

  • Installing Security and Compliance Manager on Windows 8.1

    Hi
    I am trying to install Security and Compliance Manager on my Windows 8.1 workstation.  The install is trying to install SQL Express 2008 which seems to not be compatible with Windows 8.1 and that is were the install ends.
    I tried installing SQL Express 2012 and then running the install but it looks like the database is not installed.
    Is there a new version of Security and Compliance Manager that addresses this or does anyone know how to set up SQL to accept Compliance Manager?

    Open Regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
    Delete this key under Session Manager "PendingFileRenameOperations". Restart the installation and it will work fine.

  • HT1461 Remote Login and sharing

    We are trying to remote login and shareing with network computers and have not been successful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Lots of people have been successful, so it does work.
    Can you explain where you want to share from and to (local, across the Internet, via VPN, etc...)
    Can you tell us what you tried.
    Sharing within the same network is a easy as enabling System Preferences -> Sharing
    Remote Login for ssh
    Screen Sharing for, well screen sharing
    File Sharing
    Sharing across the Internet is best done using iCloud and Back-to-my-Mac, assuming you are running Lion 10.7.2 (or newer).
    If you do not have that version with all Macs involved, or you are using mixed systems, then we need to know what.
    The least troublesome across the Internet screen sharing and file transfer would be TeamViewer.com, and it is cross platform..
    Once you give us more details, we can tailor the advise to your needs.

    Hi
    Try to increase socket limits
    Normally you can do this within the admin console , Servers -> Configuration -> Tuning -> Socket Readers
    For you, since you can't login, set the ThreadPoolPercentSocketReaders in the config.xml to a higher value than 5
    kind regards

  • Trying to understand and learn how to use btrfs

    I have been the past days trying to get my head around how btrfs works
    I have been trying tools like mkinitcpio-btrfs (very poorly documented) and now, if i list the subvolumes i have in certain volume (/) i see i have 4 subvolumes that have been created while playing around.
    If i try to delete them with "sudo btrfs subvolume delete __active", for example, I get a "ERROR: Error accessing '__active'
    What am I doing wrong?
    Also, I cannot get the whole idea about the difference between snapshots and subvolumes, i mean, a snapshot should be a directory that saves the changes made on the fs, s, if you want to roll back those changes, you just have to make btrfs "forget" the changes stored in that directory and move along, but I cannot take the idea of the subvolume thing.....
    As btrfs is quite experimental and the wikis are not noob-proof still, I'd appreciate if someone gave me a hand trying to understand these concept...
    For the moment, I'm just using it on a test computer and on a personal laptop with no fear of data loss,.
    Any help is welcome
    Thanks!

    I honestly think it is probably a better idea to not use mkinitpcio-btrfs.  As mentioned above, it is poorly documented, and for me it has never worked right (if at all).  It is an unofficial AUR package, and unfortunately our wiki still seems to give the false impression that using this package is the way to user btrfs with Arch.
    The way I have my system set up is that in subvolid=0 (the root of the btrfs filesystem) I have a rootfs subvolume and a home subvolume (there are others, but these are what primarily make up my system).  So in my fstab, I basically have two nearly identical lines, but one has no subvol specified and is mounted at /, and the other has 'subvol=home' mounted at /home.
    So in order to make it so that I can change the root filesystem as I please, instead of having the / fstab entry specify the subvolume, I put it in the kernel command line.  That is, I have 'rootflags=subvol=rootfs' in the kernel command line.  So if I want to change it, I simply change the path to one of the snapshots.
    Just remember that if you are one who likes a custom kernel, it is likely that you will have to have an initamfs no matter what you compile into your kernel.  For one thing, the kernel has no mechanism for scanning for multiple device btrfs filesystems.  But also, I have read that the kernel itself cannot handle the rootflags kernel command line argument.
    Oracle Linux does something interesting with their default setup.  They are not a rolling release, so this probably wouldn't work so well in Arch Linux, but they actually install the root filesystem (I think it is actually done to subvolid=0) and then after installation of the packages, a snapshot of the root filesystem is made, and the system is setup to boot off of that snapshot.  So it is almost like having an overlayfs on openwrt.  There is always a copy of the original system, and and changes that are being made are being done "on top" of the original.  So in the event of an emergency, yo can always get back to the original working state.
    If you put your root filesystem on something other than the root of the btrfs filesystem (which you should, as it makes the whole setup much more flexible), then you should also set up a mountpoint somewhere to give administrator access to the filesystem from subvolid=0.  For example, I have an autofs mountpoint at /var/lib/btrfs-root.   chose that spot because /var/lib is where devtools puts the clean chroot.  So it seemed as reasonable a place as any.
    You should go to the btrfs wiki, and peruse through the stuff there... not our wiki, but the actual btrfs one, as our wiki is pretty sparse.  There is not all that much content there (not like the Arch wiki), but it does cover the features pretty well.  I mean, there is certainly quite a lot for being information on only a single filesystem, but it shouldn't take you too long to get through it.  There are a few links to articles about midway down the front page.  What really gave me a better grasp of getting started with btrfs were the ones titled "How I Got Started with the Btrfs Filesystem for Oracle Linux" and "How I Use the Advanced Capabilities of Btrfs".
