Trying to Upgrade to OS X Leopard

Hi there,
I just go this MAC Mini off Ebay. Everything is working fine, and was told that the DVD burning element was not working correctly. I attempted to upgrade to OS X Leopard with my Install disc, and after a minute of reading, it keeps spitting the disc back out. Could that be because the burning element doesn't work, or what are some other possibilities. How can I get around it and still install OS X Leopard on my system?

Hi,
The drive seems to read other disks ok, although I have not tried another DVD yet. The installation disk is a MAC OS X Leopard Install Disk, the one that was sent out to upgrade from OS X Tiger to OS X Leopard. I am not sure if its an Intel Install disk, but it is the one that comes when you order the OS X Leopard Upgrade.
I don't have an original disk that came with it. I was hoping that the OS 10.5 Install disk that I used for my MAC Book Pro, would work on this MAC Mini. There is a software feature that likely needs OS X Leopard on it to work, that I had planned on using the Mac Mini for. So, if you have any scenarios, please let me know!
Thanks!

  • IMac shuts down when trying to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard

My iMac, purchased in November of '07, came installed with Tiger but also came with a Leopard OS update disk. When trying to upgrade to Leopard last week, every time I rebooted off the disk the computer would run for a minute in the gray screen and then suddenly shut off with no warning message. I checked HD in disk utilities, repaired my permissions and tried again with the same results. I've got 30 gigs of free space and 4 gigs of RAM which should be plenty. I talked to Apple support who walked me through the installation procedure with the same results and ended up shipping me a new install disk which came today. I am getting the same shut down on reboot with their replacement disk. Apple actually sent me two white disks. The first is labeled "For Mac Computers, Mac OSX Install disc 1" The second is labeled "MacBook, Mac OSX Install Disc 2" Since the second disc is label "MacBook" is it possible they sent me the wrong set of discs?
    Thanks

    rk87,
Thanks for replying. I have a 500 gig hard drive which yields a 465gig usable capacity, so, at 30 Gigs available, I don't have 10% of the drive free. This may be an issue, but my more immediate problem is that I can't get the install disk to boot up at all.
I called apple support again see what I could find out about the install disks which wouldn't work. The support guy seemed like he had a lot of knowledge about the system and suggested trying the Tiger install disk (that came with the machine) to see if it would boot up, which it did. After that success, I tried the Leopard update disk in another iMac I have at home and it worked as it should. Since the disk worked fine on the other mac, the guy at tech support speculated that there is some sort of hardware issue causing the install shut down on the computer in question.
His speculation was about the memory installed in the machine which might be the issue. I had bought the computer from an Apple Authorized store here in town who upgraded the RAM to 4GIGs using third-party memory. Even though the memory seems to have functioned properly for the past year, apple support says that there could be some sort of incompatibility with the third party product causing the install disk not to work.
Apple support told me about running a memory diagnostic off of the Tiger install disk by rebooting with the disk in the computer and hold down the "D" key. After I got off the phone I ran the test which turned out to take an hour in its long version. The test indicated no problems, but apple had told me that it might not be totally conclusive. At this point, I'm taking the computer back to the store where I bought it and will let them figure it out.

  • Trying to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard on Blackbook...cannot?

Tried to upgrade my 2.16 Blackbook from 10.4.10 to 10.5.x & during the installation process it told me that i coulndt install 10.5 on my volume (the internal HD) & it needed to be reformatted with a "GUID" partition?!
Im not sure why. My flatmate has a white Macbook from the same era & had no problems with the disc & upgrading. I also upgraded a 17" white intel imac with no probs. My flatmate's sister has a white macbook about 6 months old & they had the same problem...whats the story?!

I'm not on Leo at the moment, but it Should mention G.U.I.D there somewhere, APM r ApplePartitionScheme won't work for installing, though they can be booted from...
I'm wondering if a mistake was made at the Factory and they Cloned to APM/APS disks?
If that's the case, you'll need an external Drive to Clone to, then reformat the Internal drive & Clone back.

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but my macbook keeps ejecting the disc.  It started to install the first time and said it needed to restart to finish, restarted but ejected the disc.  It ejects every time now.  I've also installed the 10.5.8 combo update but that didn't help it.  I've tried restarting the macbook with the disc in, holding c, all that.  Why won't this work?!

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Trying to Upgrade from Leopard 10.5 to Mountain Lion

Im trying to upgrade my imac model 2008  to mountain lion, (it will support it, I have upgraded the ram and confirmed it the serial # with the apple website to be sure)   Currently its running leopard.  Not snow leopard just leopard.  This is cruital because it means Im still on osx version 10.5, it also means I don't have the app store icon available to me, as you need at least snow leopard or 10.6 to get the app store.
I've tried to upgrade to mountain lion via itunes,
it telling me its not available to me as Im in canada and even tho I know its avilable here itunes doesn't seem to know that.
I think If I can upgrade to snow leopard or lion and get the app store on my imac  I can get around these issues.  I can no longer download snow leopard from apple. Is there a reliable place to get it or to skip over it to lion?
Im not new to computeras at all but my experience with mac's is limited so I want to be sure I do this right the first time.
I need to get to 10.6, is there an easier way to do this than I've outlined?
If anyone could provide any help or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.  A Reliable download location or an alternative work around would be fantastic.

Phone the Apple Store and order Snow Leopard.

  • I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but keep getting an error message, "This update requires Mac OS X version 10.6.".  Isn't Snow Leopard 10.6?....so now what?

It sounds more like you are trying to use an updater rather than the Snow Leopard installer DVD. You might read over the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

You stated; " I have been successful with My Power Mac "
A Power Mac is incapable of being upgraded to Mavericks. It is a PPC Mac which can only run versions of OS X up to 10.5.8 and no higher. Any version of OS X higher that 10.5.8 requires an Intel processor to run.
Does the iMac meet the hardware requirements for Mavericks?

  • Have a file with a ? mark after trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard.

I am running Leopard on my MacBook Pro and wanted to upgrade to Lion. Wouldn't work so friend suggested I try to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. Followed the Snow Leopard Installation instructions which said it would take 45 minutes and it would automatically reboot when it was done.
After hearing the familiar boot up chime, I check to find a black screen. Managed to eject the Snow Leopard installation disk by shutting down and starting up with the EJECT button pressed.
Tried to boot up and I get a file with a flashing question mark in it.
Tried to boot with the Snow Leopard disk holding down the OPTION key and I get a very dark screen with the first screen of the installation instructions that can only be seen with a flash light. Can't find the curser so tried the ENTER key which takes me to the next page which is very dark too. Can't find the curser so tried the ENTER keY to no avail. Tried the Leopard Disk with the same results.
Tried to boot with Leopard disk holding down the X key and I get a very dark screen with the first screen of the installation instructions that can only be seen with a flash light. Can't see or find the curser so tried the ENTER key which takes me to the next page which is very dark too. Can't find the curser or Disk Utility but with the aid of the flashlight I can read the screen which says:
    "Welcome to Installer
To install OSX click CONTINUE and follow instructions.
To quit choose Quit Installer from the installer menu and click the start up disk."
Can't find the curse so tried the ENTER key to no avail.
Tried command+S with the installation disk in and fsck -fy yields "installation DVD appears OK".
Tried command+S WITHOUT the installation disk in and I get a file with a flashing question mark in it.
Tried OPTION key WITHOUT the installation disk in and I get a blank screen with a moveable curser but nothing else.
I have tried all the above with both the Leopard and Snow Leopard Disk with the same results.
I do run Time Machine so I have the ability to restore what I had this am but I can't seem to get to that option.
How do I get to my latest Back Up on Time Machine or boot from TM?

Unless he controls your machine (same household), you can't. At $30 USD, pop for your own copy.

I have a Mac OS X v 10.4.11 and trying to upgrade to snow leopard but it says I don't have enough RAM, what do I do?

What machine are you running on?
As far as I recall, Snow Leopard's memory requirements were 1GB of RAM. All Intel-based Macs have shipped with at least that much, so I don't understand how you have a machine that doesn't have enough memory.

  • Trying to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard

Trying to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard but now cannot use keyboard to boot from DVD (holding C key) or even from external drive (holding option key)
Is there any other way that I can force my mac to boot from external drive. Please help

    Hi Cattus
In reply to your answer - external drive is GUID partition and has worked on my other Macbook in upgrading from leopard to snow leopard. So I know the external drive does work.
I have tried DVD and external drive on good Macbook and all works fine back on problem Macbook no luck. I don't even get firmware password request. Keys on keyboard do not work at all. Tried to boot in single mode (cmd S) as well as target drive (T key) but no luck whatsoever.
External drive is USB and working. Problem Macbook did show signs of not good functioning keyboard with certain keys not working whilst still under Mac OS 10.5.8.
Do you know how to get around this problem? Would I need to remove drive from Macbook and resolve it as a stand alone drive?
    Thanks
