Trying to use pacifist to reinstall mail and textedit

I am trying to use pacifist to reinstall my mail application and textedit, however I can't seem to find either application when I search for it on my disks using pacifist. All I come up with is mail.applescript which doesn't seem like an application to me. Am I looking for the wrong thing, can someone tell me where to find these to applications so I can install them. Obviously I am not good with computers so step by step would very helpful.

It may be easier to insert the Installer DVD and open the Optional Installs folder then double-click on the Optional Installs. mpkg file. You can then locate Mail in the Applications section. Check the box then click on the Install button.
TextEdit can be found on the Installer DVD here: /System/Library/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg. Open the Essentials.pkg file with Pacifist and find TextEdit in the Applications folder. Select TextEdit then click on the Install button in Pacifist's toolbar (far left icon.)
To go directly to the folder select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste in the following: /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/.

After downloading mountain lion, I get an error message when trying to use a link in mail.  One mail account on the same computer is fine, but not the other one.  Any suggestions?

I went to the Apple Genius Bar for help.  Somehow when I downloaded Mountain Lion one of the mail accounts on the computer changed from an IMAP account to a POP account.  The POP account doesn't enable the links in email.  It was a quick fix.  Just go to prefrences in your mail account and change it to an IMAP account.  Hope this works for you as it did for me.

Update:  I tried the "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" after everything else either fizzled out or hung up. After going all the way thru the recovery process (up to 100%), I finally got an error message.....it didn't work. And now, when I fire up the computer, I don't even get to that menu with the recovery options....the only thing I can boot into is the screens with the various ways to run your OS (in "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", etc).
I'm not a techie, but I'm guessing at this point, the part of my hard drive that got damaged in the fall was, at the very least, the partition with the recovery data. Couple that with the fact that this cheapo Toshiba laptop didn't even come with recovery disk (or ANY kind of disk, even basic installation software!), I'm screwed: I don't see any way to get a workable computer now without some kind of disk to boot from. So NOW my concern is more about spending the $$ for a new OS and THEN finding out the hard drive has other problems too...is broken in some other way to boot.
How to check this? As I said, I did run "chkdsk" back when I could get into the recovery menu and run the fix-it programs. It didn't note any problems. Thinking of taking this opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista (which I never liked), but I have to know that the computer is otherwise ok....how to be sure?

If you have a rescue email address set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address set up then go to Express Lane  and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
Next choose 'iTunes Store Account Questions' or 'iTunes Store account security' (it appears to vary by country) and fill in that you'd like your security questions/answers reset.
You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox)

  • How to reinstall mail and restore preferences

Mail is going crazy on my MBP and MP. I am on IMAP and the spam functions on both my mac won't work. I have tried a restore and nothing will change. I have some rules and preferences that I would like to keep. How do I uninstall mail and do a clean reinstall? I have app cleaner. I also want to reload my junk mail rules and signatures.
    Cheers.

"Mail is going crazy," is not a very descriptive explanation of your issues. You should provide some details, i.e, what mail service provider are you sing, what error messages are you getting, are you using Mail's junk filtering or a program like SpamSieve, have you tried deleting the Mail accounts and adding them back?
In any case, don't delete the Mail app, unless you want to reinstall Mavericks, the only way to get it back.

  • Help using "to do" in Mail and iCal.

Would someone please explain to me the relationship between the to do lists in ical and Apple mail? I've searched everywhere on the Apple support site but find nothing. Do changes made to a "to do" in ical automatically get reflected in mail, and vice versa? Many thanks.

Okay, got this to work. Here's what I did...
-Made sure syncing was on and set to auto in .Mac sys panel.
-Went to iCal prefs and made sure sync with .Mac was checked
-In iCal, selected file->new calendar (on .Mac)
Then a new blank calendar showed up AND another one called "calendar". The one called "calendar" included my "to-do" list from mail.app.
I just deleted the blank one I created and everything is working fine.
Now all I have to do is figure out how I can get it to work with my other (non .Mac) IMAP accounts.
    Hope this helps.

  • Enlarging the fonts in mail and textedit

The text in my mail and text edit is tiny! I've tried to enlarge them by going to "fonts" but all I can do is make them more "bold" which helps but for some reason the computer ignores my attempts to change the size of the lettering.
I see where is says "size" and i click on it and increase the numbers but still no change in the size of text in both mail and text edit. What am I doing wrong?

The problem with small text in received messages is due to the sender using HTML for message composition.
Copied from Why HTML in E-Mail is a Bad Idea.
Because it introduces accessibility problems. When you write in plain text, the receiving mail client renders the text in whatever font the reader chooses. When you format email with HTML, the sender controls the formatting. But this is a trap: You only think your message will render the same way to the viewer as it appears to the sender. In reality, the receiver can end up squinting because the font looks so tiny, or vice versa. HTML is not rendered the same way from one viewing client to the next - all guarantee of accessiblity goes out the window. This is especially problematic for visually impaired persons.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Fonts & Colors.
Next to Message Font, choose your Font and size. The size chosen for the Message font will be used for message text when receiving a message that was composed in Plain Text but not for message text when receiving a message that was composed in HTML since the sender controls the formatting when using HTML for message composition.
When a message is received that was composed in HTML (and you will know this when the message text is tiny), you can add the Bigger/Smaller buttons to the message toolbar and select Bigger to enlarge all text or at the menu bar, go to View > Message and select Plain Text Alternative and the message text will be converted to your chosen font and font size.

  • How to reinstall Mail and itunes from Time Machine backup

My Mac Pro is running slow and AppleCare have advised to do a clean install of 10.6.6
All my files are backed up and I have done a TM backup. I want to be able to reinstall Apple Mail with all my family email and business email accounts & emails in it and also iTunes with all music and podcasts.
Is there any way I can do this directly from a back up of Time Machine without having to reinstall the whole thing once my machine has had a clean install.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

First, reinstall OS X as you've been instructed to do. Upon completion of the installation Startup Assistant will give you the option to restore from a TM backup or other external drive. Restore your Home folder, Applications, support files, and network preferences which should return all your files.
If you restore your old system entirely then you will have what you now have - a slow running system.
But before you perform all of the above what you might try first are these:
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    ynchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
