TS1425 I have the updated version of iTunes and a brand new iPod Nano 3rd Gen. It will not sync and is not recognized by iTunes.  What's wrong

Just received new iPod Nano 3rd Generation 4GB today. Have new notebook computer for 3 months with latest version of iTunes.  New iPod Nano is not recognized by iTunes and cannot do a darn thing with it.  All I want is my music.  What is the problem and how do I fix it?
