Contacts and Calendar entries should be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service if using the device as designed.
Pictures/Videos taken with the device should be copied to the computer regularly, if using the device as designed.
All media should exist in iTunes on the computer.
All apps should exist in iTunes on the computer.
There may be some lost data from apps such as game status, but would you prefer to maintain that data or have a functional device?
If the issue turns out to be hardware, it is possible to later restore from backup to get put the device back to the same functional state once the hardware is replaced.

I keep trying to empty the trash on my macbook pro as it says i have just under 2gb of harddrive space left. I can't update my software as i don't have enough harddrive space left.
Every time i try and empty the trash it says that it can't empty the trash and gives an error code -8003.
Any ideas how i can fix this?

You won't lose your music - it isn't kept in iTunes, it's usually kept in (user)/Music/iTunes and you could back that up to be double secure.
Go to (user)/Preferences and delete every file which begins with com.apple.iTunes and com.apple.mobile.iTunes
Then open the ByHost folder in Preferences and again delete every file which begins with com.apple.iTunes
Then reboot. Doing this will not delete any of your music but obviously you will have to set up your Preferences from scratch. Don't open iTunes.
Then go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download iTunes and reinstall.

I hadn't repaired permissions or checked the disk yet, so upon your suggestion I did so. No errors found.
The machine is working normally except for this particular problem (which makes the idea of a reinstallation more aggravating).
We only have power failures on average once every several years. We rarely have any severe weather here either.
One of the things we did try before posting was clicking on "Detect Displays" after plugging in the video adapter. It sees the external display in the system preferences but there's no video on the tv. As I mentioned before, using the same S-video cable with a Powerbook works with the tv, and using the same display adapter with an eMac works as well.
Haven't tried making another account yet, but will do that too. Thanks for the tip!

When downloading PDFs, they do not save to the download folder I assigned in Firefox - what can I do to fix this?

I am running Windows 8.
Every time I save a PDF it opens in UserName - AppData - Local - Temp
I have tried changing the download location in Firefox.
I've also Googled this problem and IE has the same issue - the fix for IE is declaring the site as trusted, but Firefox does not have a trusted site option.

I am aware of that.
My actual actions taken are:
I open the PDF
I hit CNTRL + SHIFT + S
The Safe Box with the temp folder selected pops up.
I access the file I wish to save in from the directory tree (I go to my username - documents - the folder - the sub-folder - the next sub-folder and then save).
Once a month I need to save 30-40 PDFs in the same folder in a short amount of time - in Windows XP the last folder saved in would become the default, which would be great. And again I found the work-around for IE, but I really like Firefox, and want to use it for this, if possible.

Can't you open any web pages in Firefox?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
