TurboLinux 8 for AMD64 and Oracle 9i

I'm a home user that uses Oracle 9i for development learning for work. I currently use SuSE 8.2 Pro for my Oracle 9i development on a dual AMD MP4200; however, I now have a dual Opteron 240 system. The only affordable Linux distros that support the Opteron system I have (Tyan Thunder K8W) is TurboLinux 8 for AMD64.
I cannot find anything about the ease or difficulties for install Oracle 9i for AMD64 (Developer's Edition for Linux) on this distro. It's rather effortless on SuSE 8.2 Pro and I have installed Oracle 9i on a Solaris 8 server at work. Does anyone know if it's a waste of my money to try to install on this distro? I thought this distro was considered one of the better ones.

I have Oracle Enterprise Edition loaded on dual processor Pentium 133 with 128MB ram running Slackware 8.1.
It installed with no problems. Oracle 8.1.7 is a different story though.

  • Volumes and Qtrees set up for SAP and Oracle

    Hi Gurus
    I Need your help Please
I need to get Volumes and Qtrees set up for SAP and Oracle.
I found a document from NetApp that helped a lot about the structure.
But what I donu2019t know and canu2019t find anywhere is sizing for the volumes and Qtrees.
I really need some guidelines on sizing these below:
    FlexVol saplog
    /usr/sap/SID
    /usr/sap/trans
    /sapmnt/SID
    /home/SIDadm
    /oracle/SID
    /oracle/SID/origlogA
    /oracle/SID/origlogB
    /oracle/SID/oraarch
    /oracle/SID/sapreorg
    /oracle/SID/sapbackup
    /oracle/SID/saparch
    FlexVol sapdata
    /oracle/SID/sapdata1
    /oracle/SID/sapdata2
    /oracle/SID/sapdataN
    FlexVol mirrlogs
    /oracle/SID/mirrlogA
    /oracle/SID/mirrlogB
    Thanks and appreciate your help

    > I have gone through the Inst Guide and I was surprised to see only 50 MB for Oracle software directory ?
    Where did you read that?
    > The sizing given in Installation guide is for typical setup or do we need to size as per our requirement ?
The sizing give there is for the initial system setup. It does not contain customer specific requirements.
    The usual process is:
    - you contact your hardware vendor
    - you use http://service.sap.com/quicksizer together with him and fill in the data
    - the hardware vendor will offer you the storage and the machines for the setup
    - the vendor configures with you the storage and the necessary filesystem layout based on that sizing
Each customers setup is different and requires the experience and knowledge from the respective hardware vendor how to set up the system so it performs well.
You can follow the suggestions given here, this will be enough for the initial setup but the system will grow. This is not taken into account in the installation guide because it's customer specific.

  • Directory Setup for RAC and Oracle Restart

I have three database installations that I'd like some insight on the initial directory structure and permissions. The three installations are:
    1) Prod RAC - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure, 11.2.0.2 DB EE with RAC option
    2) Test RAC - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure, 11.2.0.2 DB EE with RAC option
    3) Single Instance - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure Standalone (Oracle Restart), 11.2.0.2 DB EE
The they all have two users GRID (for Grid Infrastructure Software Owner) and ORACLE (for Oracle Database Software Owner).
We had a consultant install the databases. It's very weird since we have an inconsistency in directories and permission. I want to understand the inconsistency between RAC installations as well as Oracle Restart Install.
SEE BELOW: The two RAC servers have different owners for /u01/app/11.2.0.2 directory. The Oracle Restart Installation - Single Instance has the same owner as Prod RAC but different than Test RAC. What the consultant said was that ORACLE_BASE would be /u01/app/oracle for both Grid Infrastructure and Database installations. This was to apply to TEST/PROD RAC (3 node, 3 instances, 1 instance/node) and Oracle Restart installation. The GRID_HOME would be /u01/app/11.2.0.2/grid and ORACLE_HOME would be /u01/app/11.2.0.2/db_1. It seems like the owners aren't setup correctly. Why? I don't want problems with patching or upgrading. If this setup is technically incorrect what is the best way to setup so there's no owner/permission issues. Is it necessary to have two separate ORACLE_BASE's like /u01/app/grid?

    Hello
I did only check prod, as that is the important one.
i am afraid that setup is not clean. I won't use the work is wrong, but need to be normalized.
grid oracle base need to be separate from oracle oracle base, and the grid oracle home, MUST be outside of oracle base/oracle home of the oracle user.
In a multi user setup, the structure should be as follow.
grid user, group oinstall, asm* groups
oracle user, group oinstall, dba and db* groups
The GRID install, have, grid home and oracle base
the oracle base for grid should be, /u01/app/grid
the grid home should be, /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
the Oracle user have several homes, and oracle base
the oracle base for oracle should be, /u01/oracle
so, for permissions, when I create this, i do as root
    mkdir -p /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
    mkdir -p /u01/app/grid
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oraInventory
    chown -R grid:oinstall /u01
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01/app/oracle
then, you install grid .. you have so say oracle home is /u01/app/grid and oracle home is /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
at the end, the root.sh as part of the install will take care of the permissions for oraInventory, and the rest for grid.
when grid is installed, you can move to the oracle db install you use oracle base as /u01/app/oracle and oracle home as /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1
    that will give you
    2 4 drwxr-xr-x 6 root oinstall 4096 Sep 21 03:20 /u01
    5996545 4 drwxr-xr-x 6 root oinstall 4096 Sep 18 22:58 /u01/app

Each user have to use his own oracle_base, as each oracle_base will store files and folders created for logs, admin, diagnostic with different permissions and different usages, for a reason you have role separation.

  • How to validate prerequisite for ODP and Oracle Client connection

    Hi.
I have a very simple application on .Net that connect to Oracle using ODP (was compiled with Oracle.DataAccess dll 10.2).
I want to check "connection prerequisite" (application will be able to connect to DB) before installing this aplication on other computers?
How can I check that ODP.NET version 10.2 or higher is installed on target host (registry check is not enopugh)?
I know that I can check ODP entries in registry - but this will not check Oracle Client and compatibility between client and ODP.
Also, if ODP was installed by ODAC XCopy installation - registry may be not updated by new ODP entry.
And - if I am installing on the computer, DB was installed on, Oracle Client can be not installed separately.
And one more issue: When I tried to run "test connection" method from installation, that use referenced dll on machine, that has only ODAC (with ODP) 11, - "Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException The provider is not compatible with the version of Oracle client at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleInit.Initialize()
at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection..cctor()" error message was thrown (policies for both ODAC 10.2 and 11 are exists in GAC (assembly), pointing to Oracle.DataAccess 11 from ODP 2x bin).
So, How and which components can I check to ensure appropriate versions of ODP and Oracle Client were installed and application will be connected?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
You could check for the presense of Oracle.DataAccess.dll in the GAC. Bear in mind you'd also want to check the version and whether a policy files exists as well as a newer version + policy file will work too (but not without the policy file).
That wouldn't confirm the install is valid and works though, and I don't know of a way you could easily check that, apart from perhaps simply trying to run a small exe that attempts a connection to the database.
With respect to the type initializer exception, that occurs when ODP cant find the right oraops*.dll or oci.dll, usually due to the wrong one being found, but can also occur if one is not found at all. Quite often this is due to the application including ODP in its bin directory rather than letting ODP get picked up out of the gac. Prior to 10.2.0.2.20, ODP loads the dependencies based in PATH so multiple homes can cause it as well. 10.2.0.2.20 and higher ODP loads dll's based on DLLPATH registry entry.
    Hope it helps,
    Greg

  • Installation of Oracle Discoverer for PeopleSoft and Oracle apps(11.5.10)

    Hello Gurus,
I hope I am in the right forum. I have been assigned to install Oracle Discoverer for Oracle ERP (11.5.10). We currently have a Oracle Discoverer environment for Peoplesoft. My questions are follows.
    1. Can I use the existing Oracle Discoverer which is used to get PeopleSoft data for Oracle Applications (11.5.10) ?? This way I avoid installing another copy of Discoverer. In Future, if we could use the existing technology for other Databases.
    2. If I go in for a new install of Oracle Discoverer, what is that I need to install ? I am guessing, there should be
    1. Desktop application on the client
    2. Do I need to install anything on the server ?
    3. I will have a Oracle Discoverer database
I guess 1. (Desktop application) would be installed on all desktops ? Is there a web based thingy ?? For 2 and 3 I would require the DBA's to help me out.
Would anyone have a high level diagram of the things that go in for installation ? I would really appreciate if you could send it to kiranramachandra at yahoo dot com.
    Thanks folks
    Kiran

    Hi,
    1. No, you don't need to reinstall Discoverer, you can just connect to the new database provided you have updated the TNSNames.ora file. However, before you can connect with Discoverer Desktop you will need to use Discoverer Admin to create a new Apps mode EUL in the Applications Database.
    2. You will need a client installation of Discoverer (Admin and Desktop). If you want to use the web based Discoverer Plus and Viewer tools you will need to a Oracle Application Server installation. If you are installing Discoverer 10g then you should install the Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition. But depending on your version and configuration you may need to install other tools.

  • Need a function name for Sql and Oracle

Retrieving value of next line by doing opteration in previous row.

Can you rephrase the question? Or better yet, provide an example? I'm not sure I understand what you are asking.
My best guess is that you are looking for the analytic functions LEAD or LAG in Oracle, assuming you are on a relatively recent Oracle version. If by "SQL and Oracle" in your subject you mean "SQL Server and Oracle" (SQL is a language that all relational databases implement, SQL Server is Microsoft's relational database), I have no idea how (or if) you can do something similar with a built-in function in SQL Server. You would want to post in a SQL Server group to see how they handle that sort of thing.

  • A driver for sequel and oracle

I am using currently the jdbc-odbc bridge...which does not seem to support a lot of things...I cannot get a ntext value from the resultSet properly...
Can this be solved by changing my driver...If yes...do suggest be a best one which supports both sequel and oracle....
Also suggest me a website where I can check the details.
    smita

A Type-4 drivers is no more likely to fully implement
(or correctly implement) a specified JDBC version than
any other type of driver. You are correct about this. If I knew my app was going to sit, on one box (or maybe a couple) that I had complete control over, I'd consider using a non-type 4 driver if the performance improves. But from my experience, I've found apps are easier to maintain and especially to distribute, if a type 4 driver is used.

  • Location of tnsnames.ora for Tora and Oracle XE Client

I Googled far and wide and did not see a CLEAR answer to my question, hopefully this will help others.
I have installed the debian oracle-xe-client and tora packages (tora rebuilt for oracle) on Ubuntu 8.04.
However, I did not know where I was supposed to place the tnsnames.ora file for my databases. I have tried running Tora with the environment variable of TNS_ADMIN set to the file where I placed my tnsnames.ora, however that did not work as Tora did not 'see' the file or its entries apparently. I know this works because I copied it from a Debian Etch box with the client and server installed.
I had even added a 'network/admin' directory structure to the //usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/client (ORACLE_HOME) with the tnsnames.ora but also with no success.
    Now for the solution:
Simply remember that TNS_ADMIN points to the directory where the tnsnames.ora is and it will work. :)
I do have a suggestion that both Tora and sqlplus use a config file to set these directory(s) in addition to the overriding ability of the environment variable, TNS_ADMIN as is usually the case with UNIX apps (and thus expected).
    Thank you,
    Jason

The ODBC Instant Client Readme that is included in the install also indicates that %ORACLE_HOME%/network/admin/tnsnames.ora is the correct default location. What about OCI?

  • BO Enterprise XI for Windows and Oracle 11.2

    Hi
Currently we are running BO Enterprise XI for Windows 3.1 SP3 which SAP does not support on Oracle 11.2.  Does this limitation only apply for the repository and audit database but not for the reporting database?
Can the Oracle 11.2 client be used with BO Enterprise XI for Windows 3.1 SP3 as long as the database is 10.2 or 11.1?
Is there any info on when SAP will support Oracle 11.2, SP4 or 4.0?
    Thanks
    Tom Cullen
    Oracle DBA

    Hi Tom,
Not sure if BOE is going to support 11.2 as the CMS database, check through SMP to access the platforms for BOE. CR will typically work with any version as a reporting database only. [Platforms |http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/30da6fbd-7d4f-2d10-a38c-96596304586b] currently only shows 11.1 but unless Oracle made some significant changes it should work. If you find problems post the issue or create a case in SMP and a Rep can log the issues and determine if it's something we can fix etc. and get it added to the supported platforms.
I can't give you links to the Doc's in SMP, My links won't work for you.
Is there an error you are getting or are you just looking for info?
    Thank you
    Don

  • Hardware Requirements for OC4J and Oracle DB

    Hi,
I'm looking for some information about hardware requirements for a server that will run a Oracle DB and OC4J. It will be used for training purpose (about 10 people) and for running small apps using ADF.
Does anybody knows how much hardware I need?
Is there any documents from Oracle for hardware requirements?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

    Greetings,
We routinely develop and test on a Dell Vostro laptop with OS Windows XP and 4GB RAM. The key is to either run the Oracle db in a VM (10.2.0.1) with at least 0.5 GB RAM for the VM or use the XE db. I personally prefer the XE db as it is lightweight and easily configured or uninstalled. As far as oc4j is concerned, a lot can be done to improve the efficiency by modifying the oc4j.cmd file in driveletter:/oc4j/bin:
set JVMARGS=-Xmx512m -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit -server -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Dclass.load.trace=class-not-found -Dclass.load.log.level=finestThe JVM args settings are fully explained at:
