Turbulent / Fractal Noise - evolution limit?

I came across what seems to be a limit in the number of evolutions I can use in both Turbulent and Fractal Noise. I was following a recipe for simulating dirt on old film stock - you create a solid layer add one of the noise FXs then change the contrast up to 350 and brightness down to -90 or so, use the Silhouette Luma transfer mode and hey presto instant dirt!
The clip I am "dirtying" is 1 minute, 8 seconds and 23 frames long. So a quick calculation for 25fps (I'm using PAL footage) and I get 1723 frames! My logic was that since the dirt needs to jump around on each frame if I set the number of evolutions to 1723 I'd get very jumpy dirt, which is what I want - dirt jumps randomly frame to frame and not move across or appear in exactly the same spot on different frames.
It works but only for the first few seconds and then, with both Turbulent and Fractal Noise it stops evolving! Is there a limit here? I can't see anything in the manual and nothing turned up when I Googled or searched through the forums.
I'm running AE CS4 9.0.2 under Windows XP sp3 with 4GB RAM with the 3gig switch on.
My work around was to use several keyframes throughout the clip every 2 seconds with keyframes for evolution set to 0 then 50, then 0 again and 50 again then back to 0 again...etc. This worked a treat. But am I missing something obvious about how these useful and versatile FX work?
The recipie for the old footage BTW was here:
http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/ae/oldfilmlook/
I made my own vignette, a custom flattened curve to reduce contrast. I added an adjustment layer for brightness with a wiggle, another with a wiggled blur as well scaling up the footage 105%, added noise and used a slight jumpy wiggle on the position. Then I threw on the dirt and slowed down the footage to 16fps. But the scratches didn't work for me and it looks convincing without.

  • Fractal Noise-Evolution not working in After Effects.

Pretty fresh to after effects. Following this tutorial until I notice that Evolution wasn't having an effect and I noticed the numbers were red. I assume it's a limitation of my computer in some way but I'm not sure what or how to resolve it.

We need more details. If you apply fractal noise to a layer and animate evolution then you should see a change. If you downloaded a sample project file then there may be an expression attached to evolution. That's the only way that the numbers would not be able to be changed. Select your layer with Fractal Noise applied and press the e key twice to reveal any expressions.

  • Can I use AE Fractal Noise as a background in ENCORE menu?

After Effects has a fractal noise effect that I have used and I would now like to import or dynamic link to that fractal noise in ENCORE to use in a menu.  Is this possible?  If so how?
I have imported the AE composition to ENCORE but I don't know how to make that asset a background in a menu.   Any experience or directions would be appreciated.
I am using CS3 with PP, AE8 and ENCORE.

No, you cannot just apply an effect in Encore. You must export a movie that will play in the background.
Here are some hlep files regarding usikng AE for Encore menus.

  • Why are animation presets not showing in pop-up list for fractal noise?

In a standard install of AE CS4, the animation presets pop-up list showed a bunch of presets for fractal noise (see attached image).
In a standard install of AE CS5.5, the animation presets pop-up list showed a bunch of presets for fractal noise (see attached image).
In a standard install of AE CS6 (on the Mac), the pop-up list is empty. (Yes, I enabled the "Show presets"), despite the fact that, eg, "Curtain.ffx" is in the equivalent Presets>Backgrounds folder.
Is there another switch to turn on? I'm using Mac OSX 10.7.5.

  • After Effects - CC Vector Blur and  Fractal Noise Rendering Issue CS3

    Hey,
I am using After Effects for animation. I have drawn everything in Illustrator, imported into AE and added some effects like CC Vector Blur and Fractal Noise to generate water-like textures.
My problem: when I render as an image sequence (or video, or PSD), I don't get the effect. I'm assuming I don't have it properly set up for rendering and I am wondering how I can fix this.
I have precomposed water layers (which are three different layers; a blue solid overlay; and two masked layers with added effects) and added motion blur. Given this is the problematic area, I am also assuming this is where the problem is.
Any advice! Or else I'm screen shot-ing every frame.......ugghh.

    Hello i've got a Problem,
I was sitting on After Effects for like 5hours to make a fresh Intro but then after i Exported it to a Premiere Pro File and i try to open it with PP it says
    "Videfilter is missing: Ae.Fractal Noise.
I dont have any ideas what i could do pls help me.

Premiere does not use Fractal Noise.
Might want to export it into a lossless file.

  • IMPORTING AFTER EFFECTS FRACTAL NOISE?

If I create a fractal noise comp in AE that is the same dimensions as the photoshop file that is going to be used for printing then will that after effects fractal noise comp be suitable for high quality printing? I am not using fibres as I find it not particularly useful or easy to use as fractal noise in photoshop.
    thanks
    Angus

You can do that in several ways:
    1. Yuu can use dynamic link from AE to PPro - that mean you don't need to render anything from AE. More on that: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Adobe Dynamic Link
    2. If you are using newest version of AE/PPro you can use something valled Live Text Templates. More on that: After Effects Help | Live Text Templates or Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Live Text templates
    3. Or if you need to render from AE and import footage to PPro you have to render that footage with codec that gives you alpha channel, and you have to turn on alpha in AE export settings. more on that: After Effects Help | Basics of rendering and exporting

  • Fast Preview Mode Fractal Noise

Scrubbing values (contrast, brigthness, complexity, etc--all) of Fractal Noise  alters the noise completely while the scrubbing takes place--when
"Open GL -Interactive" is selected.  Release the mouse button, and the noise looks completely different than what is shown during scrubbing.

Well, that's between and your NVidia driver. That's all there is to it. Hardware acceleration is tricky and you are running a card that didn't exist while CS5 was developed, so nobody could test for potential issues. I know that's not what you wanna hear, but you are pretty much on your own and between installing different driver versions to fiddling with configuration options it's all your own fun. Even if the card was tested, you could still run a specific configuration that would yield the same issues. It's the nature of the beast. In any case, AE is far from dependent on OpenGL, so simply turning it off is always an option and on a reasonably new processor, there is almost no noticable difference in realtime performance.

  • 3D Fog (not fractal noise method)

I'm using CC particle world to create fog in a 3d scene made entirely in AE.
However, it doesn't really look great, and I'm wondering what settings people use or if there is a good method of generating 3d fog.
My camera flys around inside the scene, so it's important for the fog to be genuine 3d and not just layers of fractal noise on solids or real fog composited in.

Even with a camera flying through the scene, you can just use several layers of real fog/smoke footage distributed in 3D space.
One trick is to have the fog layers automatically orient toward the camera so that you're never seeing them edge-on.
See this page for a bunch of resources on creating and compositing fog. Pay special attention to the Mark Christiansen article linked to from there.
Personally, I've never found the creation of fog/smoke with a particle system to be worth the trouble. Using footage elements of fog/smoke as a starting point has always been more efficient for me.

  • Anyone else think Photoshop needs a better fractal noise filter?

I'm surprised that after all these versions, PS still has a really simple fractal noise generation filter (Render Clouds). While AfterEffects gives you a huge amount of control with it's Fractal Noise effect, PS is limited still to a 'one type only' cloud filter (with no controls at all!). I would have thought that a tool allowing you to create various organic, procedural patterns (clouds, veins, bumps, etc) would be a hugely requested feature in PS. I use Fractal Noise in AE extremely frequently, for a large variety of uses.
    Any thoughts/comments on that?

Yeah, I thought so too. This doesn't cover all the bases, but the free plugin "2d hyperclouds" does offer more options (scale, levels, intensity, random generators, etc). You can get it at:

  • Fractal Noise limited to a circle when using Polar Coordinates? Video included.

I am following this tutorial on Shock waves:
I am having an issue when I apply Polar Coordinates. The Fractal Noise can only go to a certain point, after that point its cut out.
Here is a video I uploaded showing what I mean.
Is their simply an option I have missed or is this a known issue?

No pre comp necessary. I just tried this with polar coordinates applied to a shape layer. Works just fine. There must be something else going on in your composition.
I'm guessing you added a feathered mask and the top part of the mask is in the wrong position.

  • I want to make a continuous movement in turbulent displace option?

Hi, i'm trying to do a 'heat' effect, but i want to make a continuous movement of it (not a loop, but a almost linear movement) by choosing the options i only get distortions that advance in time but does not keep the same continuous movement, which is the best option to do it? or is there any other option besides turbulent displace option?
    Thanks in advance

Displacement Map and Compound Blur together might do well (you'll have to have a precomp containing a layer with Fractal Noise to drive both effects).
Alternatively, Video Copilot has a nice heat distortion plugin.

  • Turbulent displacement

What I'm trying to do is draw a line coming from the top of the screen to the bottom (using trim paths) and apply turbulent displacement to the bottom half of the line only. At the moment is applies the effect to the whole line, and using a mask doesn't allow me to keep the two sections joined together at the half point (the turbulence effect breaks the line and doesn't look like one object)
Just looking for a quick fix on how to solve this problem?
    Many thanks
    Aileen

Create a precomp with Fractal Noise in the lower half and a flat grey at the top. (Two solids, one with Fractal Noise at the bottom and one with Linear Wipe at the top.)
Use that precomp to drive a Displacement Map effect on your line.

  • YouTube won't correctly process a "TV Noise" effect

I have a TV Noise effect that I created on a solid layer in After Effects with the Fractal Noise effect.
This is how it looks on my computer after encoding:

This is how it looks on youtube:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p04tZKXKBFE
Notice that there are little squares all over the place on the youtube video (as well as tiny little 'blurs' everywhere), while the image from my computer shows no such little squares. I have tried every possible render setting on my end and have produced many satisfactory renders, so I know that this is an issue on YouTube's end. Does anyone know if there is a way to tweak YouTube's encoder?
    Here's my computer:
    Computer - I'm using a MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013
Operating System - I'm using OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.1
Software used including version number - I'm using Adobe After Effects CC 2014, 2014.2 release, Version 13.2.0.49 to create the video, and using Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014, 2014.2 Release, Build 8.2.0.54 to render the video.
    Source codec - http://www.tommydimmel.com/images/my_photos/Composition%20Settings.png
    Destination codec - http://www.tommydimmel.com/images/my_photos/Adobe%20Media%20Encoder%20Rende.....
Type of destination use - I want people to be able to view this video as close to its original quality as possible, streaming on YouTube and Vimeo
    Thanks

The YouTube preset in the Adobe Media Encoder with the data rate jacked up to the maximum allowed by YouTube and set to multi-pass rendering is as good as you are going to get because YouTube and Vimeo reprocess all uploaded videos.
The problem is a very small noise pattern changing very quickly and MPEG compression. The color works in blocks of pixels so you are going to end up with interpolated colors. Just static by itself is not very fun to look at. I would suggest changing your design.

  • Making star fields: Transparent layers for stars made with noise?

I'm trying to do what David Bogie described here:
David Bogie, "How can you create a flying through space effect?" #4, 16 Jul 2008 7:28 am. But I'm a real newbie in AE (I have 6.0 and have owned it for years but only used it about twice or so - I do everything else in PPro), so I'm getting stumped on basics. What kind of layer should I do this with? The choices in 6.0 are Text, Solid, Light, Camera, Null Object, and Adjustment Layer. I tried a solid black layer, but it is indeed very solid - when I make a second one, the first is never seen again. Null Object and Adjustment layers don't seem to respond when I put the noise and threshold effect pair on them, so they are apparently the wrong type for this. There seems to be no such thing as a Transparent layer type, or is there?
A secondary question (sorry to put two questions in one post, but it's probably simple) is about the threshold effect. It seems that the result is either pure white or pure black - I started with noise of varying lightnesses and even color, but when I use threshold to thin it out (to make it more like stars), the result is only bright white dots and nothing else, no matter what threshold level I choose. Am I missing something simple?

Sorry, Thomas, I thought you were the one who was frustrated - it sounded like you felt I needed to either upgrade or study the basics on my own before attempting something like this. And I wasn't belittling older versions; I thought you were. Don't ya just hate that lack of voice inflection and facial expressions that you get in online communication...! Okay, onward.
I read about the Pan Behind Tool before (if you start searching for "anchor point" and "position" it comes right up), but then, as now, I don't understand how it works with layers that have already been moved out of whack. And since my last post I have done way more to my comp: To try to reduce the afore-mentioned problem while still getting a variety of star patterns in my layers, I made all the positions 360x240 (which is the same as what I left the anchor points at) and introduced rotation instead - that didn't solve it, but it looked a little better. Then I decided that the time before the earth appeared was kinda boring, so I learned about parenting, made two of the star layers children of the third one, and bezier'ed some position and rotation action to the parent, so that it will look like the viewer's ship is changing direction as it's flying, and then when it steadies its heading, earth begins to appear. It's not bad - the flying motion takes your attention off the layer discrepancy. But when I showed it to my husband, who had conceived the original idea of this sort of video for the song intro, he instantly noticed the relative motion without me mentioning it - he didn't know what to call it, but commented that my stars seemed to be moving around. Yup! I am now convinced that it's not just anchor points, but the fact that the scale is different on the three layers. I even tried adjusting the rates of change of the scale to be the same on all layers (2X over the course of a period of time - one is 100->200, another is 60->120, and the third is 50->100), but they still move funny. Oh, well. So I finally just rid of the keyframes on the two child tracks altogether and let the parent do all the enlarging. I don't know how that differs from having each layer enlarge the same ratio over the same course of time, but somehow it is - the funny movement is gone. Unfortunately that eliminated the final thing that made the layers different - the current result could have been achieved simply with three layers in Photoshop. I would have liked to have "closer" layers enlarging faster than "farther" ones (that's the reason for multiple layers in the first place), but if they won't do so from the center point, it's just too weird. I have spent a whole day working on 18 seconds of video - I need to move on to the rest of my project.
Okay, now to address Andrew's post, which came in when this post was almost ready to send (I learned my lesson and checked before actually sending!). That's my kind of tutorial! In one sitting he teaches several techniques, effects, tools, unnumerable keyboard shortcuts, etc. Often when I watch a tutorial video, I learn just one thing in ten minutes, but this guy packs in the information. I will have to be careful to sort out what I can do and what I can't - I have 6.0 Standard, and he has Pro of some newer version (I don't know how new, but he was able to make great-looking stars in seconds using fractal noise, an effect I don't seem to have). As for using his idea directly, it had occurred to me that zooming in closer than I am would be cool, but I don't have any images for that. Do you know where one would get satellite images like that? Google Earth is copyrighted material, even though I assume the images it uses are not.
Wow, I learned a lot today - thanks to both of you for pointing me in good directions. AE is not as intimidating as it was yesterday! :-)
