Turn off Built-In HDD password?

Right, when I first got my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-12H), I set an HDD password, but now I've decided to get rid of it, and just use XP passwords (as there are now multiple accounts). The thing is, I can't! I can't disable the password, nor can I even change it to something like, "a". I thought it might not allow simple passwords, so I tried "house321" for example, pressed F10 to exit with saved changes - nothing!
What can I do? I can access the BIOS set-up, but nothing in there seems to help
I also tried entering my password followed by \ which I read while looking for solutions, and that didn't help
Any suggestions?

Sure LooieENG , why not? =D

• Remove built-in HDD password (Satellite Pro L300)

I already posted a topic but it didn't get any working answers, and I can't post in it to bump it any more.
Anyway, I know the password, and I can boot up into Windows, get into BIOS, etc..I just can't remove the password, not change it. There's no BIOS user password set, or a supervisor password set, just an HDD password. I want to remove it and just have the Windows XP passwords. This is really frustrating now. I just upgraded to the latest BIOS version about an hour ago, and still no luck
Any ideas?
These are the suggestions I tried:
"You should be able to remove the password by first entering the current password, then just hitting <enter> for both of the "new password" entries.
If that's not clearing the password, then something else is amiss. :-("
The thing is, there isn't a thing for current password, new password and confirm new password, there's just one thing that says built-in HDD password within the security bit of the BIOS setup, and no matter what you enter, the changes aren't reflected
Edit: Seems you can't change or remove the HDD password. How ridiculous.

If you didn't set a hard drive password and the system suddenly starts asking for one, that is one symptom of a drive failure. As far as I know, there is no way to reset, remove, or otherwise defeat a hard disk password once it is set so under those circumstances, I would treat the drive as failed and shop for a replacement. If the system is still under warranty, a Premier Authorized Service Provider would be the best option.

If you have not set an HDD password, and you are now getting a prompt for one, it means that the hard drive has failed. Sorry.

Hi, my laptop (Satellite Pro 6100 P4-M 1.7 GHz/15TFT/256MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/LAN/WiFi/BT/W2K or XP) has rather recently started prompting me with a message "Built-in HDD Password" at boot up. Nothing's working, and I am stranded with a dead laptop on my hands. I would appreciate any help/advice that anyone can render.

Hi Khurram,
Sadly I think you will need to replace your hard drive. If your notebook is definitely asking for a hard drive password then there is no way of bypassing this and the only way that I know of recovering this situation is to send the hard drive to a specialist company who specialise in this kind of recovery (usually for forensic puposes, Police, armed forces, etc.). This can prove quite expensive.
The easiest (and cheapest) option would be for you to replace the hard drive and then restore your system and data (either from a backup if you have one, or else from the Toshiba recovery discs).
regards,

• Can I turn off built in screen??

I have a MacBook Pro 17", and I routinely connect it to an additional Apple 20" screen when at home.
However, I have 1 program that does not like dual screens. In fact, it is a known problem with the program that it will not work correctly with more than 1 screen and it is listed as not something that is going to be corrected any time soon.
Is there a way that I can turn off the internal screen of the MacBook Pro and have just the external running? I have looked, but I don't see anything about how to do that.
I am also scheduled to do a demonstration of this program and would need to use a projector which will also make the program think it is dual screen, so I really need to know if I can turn off the built in screen of the MacBook Pro.
Thanks!

This is the iCal forum. Your question is likely to get a better response from the MacBook Pro forum.

• Apple must allow only owner can turn off iPhone by his password. Otherwise the thief can turn off the phone and run away, owner can not trace him.

I lost my iPhone 5 months ago. The thief just turned off my iPhoen and ran way. Even I set password for my iPhone but he can turn it off and of course I can not trace my iPhone by using FIND MY iPHONE. Apple should consider this situation. Thanks

If you need to restore your phone but can't turn off Find My iPhone, you'll have to force it into recovery mode in order to restore it, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.

• Macbook turns off. Date & time, passwords...

So, today I unplugged my Macbook for the first time in about a week and the battery drained to about 60% and my Macbook shut off. I tried to turn it back on but it didn't work until I got it back onto the charger. When I turned it on, it started up fine but it told me that the date and time was reset to a time before 2008 and it had forgotten my internet password.
I bought the Macbook in January of 2010, so it's faily new.

• How can I turn OFF my Yahoo email password from Firefox memory. since it was hacked last week.

Some time ago I let Firefox remember my Yahoo email username and password. Last week someone hacked into my Yahoo email account and used my email address list to send out lots of yucky spam to them. I have changed my Yahoo password, but now, just for safety's sake, I want to have that password blank whenever I sign in. How do I toggle the Firefox memory OFF so that it doesn't remember my new Yahoo name and password? I would prefer to log that name and password in myself from now on.

I'm back on Firefox 13.01 and the webmail and Yahoo Home page appear to be sorted.
From another similar problem, I learned that going into Tool/Options - Network Settings, and changing the proxy setting from AutoDetect Proxy to Use System Proxy, or No Proxy gets rid of the password pop-up problem.
I've been using 13.01 for the last 10 minutes or so, with Yahoo as my home page, and I've ended and started FF five or six times, and each time, my it went straight to my homepage without requesting a password. E-mail looks to be working fine as well.

• How to turn off asking to remember passwords each time I open a site

Where do I go into 'Tools' to reset Firefox site password manager to 'off'. I don't want to be asked to have a particular site password saved.

If you disable the Firefox Password Manager then you shouldn't get the pop-up to remember passwords.
*Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: [] "Remember passwords for sites"
You can inspect and manage the permissions for all domains on the about:permissions page.
If you do not keep such settings then it is possible that an extension is interfering.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

• How Do I turn off the auto save password for a specific site?

A key comes up and asks if I want to save a password for every time I log in to certain sites. Sometimes I would like it to save but where does it have a feature to stop asking me? the old one did and I don't see that on the new one. Thanks.

Firefox doesn't do email, it's a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.

• Turn off or save AppStore password prompt

Hi there,
Every time I download something from the AppStore I am prompted for my password, even if it's a free app. Is there a way to have my iPad remember this password?
Thanks for the help

What real world are you taking about, Matt?
If you can save the same password for iTunes, but not for AppStore, that's just misleading.
Safari lets you save your passwords for banking online, but if you want to download a free game (even with no creditcard information saved to appleid-account) you have to enter a password.
That leads to changing your password to smth simple and easy-to-type, i.e. lowering your security level.
Everyone admits that this time Apple had a wrong design decision on that would be better for the user (like with those annoying popup messages on iOS), the problem is – it's not getting fixed.

• How can I set a passcode that is only required at certain times of the day. Ie: my child needs access for school use, but don't want her playing iPad in the middle of the night. I cannot identify a way to have the iPad turn off or require a password

I cannot find a way to enable my child's iPad to require a passcode only at certain times of the day.
Yes I have used the clock/timer/ countdown - great to restrict how many minutes of iPad usage they get a day.
But as my child requires the iPad in school for class lessons the usage at school varies maybe 30 mins 1 day and a few hrs on other days
I want the ability to say set the iPad to not work between say 7pm and 7am, ( unless a passcode is entered) so my child isn't playing games on it in the middle of the night...
Apple I cannot see anything in the settings that performs this function
Help

You can Remote Lock his iPad with Find My iPad using a computer at whatever time you like.
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2700
Note: The iPad may be disabled if he tries the passcode too many times.
