Turn off startup chime

Paste the following script into Applescript, compile it,then save it as an app called silent shutdown. Move it to your Utilities folder. Then drag it to the left side of your Dock, creating an alias there. Launch the app from the dock to always shutdown your system. While shutting down, it will set your volume to zero, ensuring the next startup will be silent.
tell application "Finder"
display dialog "What would you like to do?" buttons {"Shutdown", "Restart", "Cancel"} default button "Shutdown" with icon caution
if button returned of result is "Shutdown" then
        set volume 0
        shut down
else if button returned of result is "Restart" then
        set volume 0
        restart
    end if
end tell

    Hello:
Mute your computer before you shut it down.
Incidentally, that "annoying sound" is an audible notification that the Mac has successfully performed self-tests on startup.  If you get anything other than a single chime, you have trouble.

  • How do I turn off startup sound?

Every computer I ever had, the first thing I do is to turn off the startup sound because it is very annoying in a public place and sometimes in a quiet place. I have not been able to find out how to trun it off on my Air. I asked the guys at the stores and they just say you can't. That is really dumb. I turned off my speaker but that is not a practical way because I may not remember to turn it off when I shut down.
The question is how do I turn it off permenantly.
    Love to know.
    Thanks.
    Glenn

NONE OF THE ABOVE WORKS FOR ME!
    imac/Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
    I find this great solution...
    <This is a Direct Download Link>
    MuteCon for Mac OS
    or go to http://homepage1.nifty.com/macbs/download.htm#MuteCon
    mutec202.dmg(90.3KB)(recent version)

this app mute the sound before exit and demute after boot.
works with Lion/snow leopard/ Mointain Lion
    set the preferences like this
and add to Admin User acount to launch on startup.
So easy...I can not believe I lost so much time.

  • Turn off login chime

is there a way to turn off the login chime when you just turn on the mac??

You should be able to mute the system volume prior to shutdown
and it may remain quiet on restart or login; yet across the different
user accounts, this older idea which worked previously systemwide
may not remain valid on the later systems and hardware.
There may be a way to change the systemwide settings through the
use of a super-user or admin single user login into terminal, etc.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Any possible way to turn off startup "DDDAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH" sound?

If I am to take my mac into classes turned off, will my startup always be anounced to the class? I have searched older forums but they say to just mute it before previous shutdown? Is there any checkbox/alternative to muting it?

The startup sound is mightily annoying, but I agree that you shouldn't have to shut it down. Just sleep the machine between classes.
Sleeping has many advantages. You don't have to wait for startup to reach the desktop, and you don't have to wait for it to shut down; you just close the lid. You can leave all your apps and documents open so you don't have to re-open them all the way you had them. You have instant-on, because a Mac comes out of sleep in a second or less.
Many Mac users, including me, do not shut down or restart their Macs for days, weeks, or longer. I even go on trips with it that way. Shutting down just isn't necessary most of the time, especially a laptop.

  • Turn off hourly chime

My iPhone sounds a chime on the hour and quarter hour, but only certain times of the day.  I've searched how to turn this off, and cannot find how to.  I have NOT installed an alarm app.

There really isn't any other way. I've read posts about this in the past where it turns out to be a game that's setting off a chime at some weird hour every day.
It would still take a while but you might be able to find some ideas by searching for something like "apps that cause an hourly chime iPhone" in your favorite search engine. You might see the name of an app you have pop up somewhere.
    Best of luck.

  • Turn off startup sound and red led.

    Hey,
i need to turn off my vado startup sound, how to i do that?
Also, i dont want my red led to light up when i am filming. Help needed with that on also.
    Thanks.

Turn "Instant Record" on in the setting by pressing the Play/Pause and Delete buttons at the same time. When it comes out of sleep mode it doesn't make a sound.
Being able to turn off the display while recording would also be useful or at least be able to dim it. I've disturbed some people while recording a play in a dark theatre. And I know it bothers me when someone is playing with there cell phone or other device in a low light situation.

  • Turning off startup sound?

Is there a way to turn off the long tone that macs make when they turn on?

In addition to V.K's suggestion, you can put your MacBook to sleep by closing the lid, instead of shutting down. Waking from sleep makes no startup sound. The only time a MacBook needs to be shut down is to remove the battery.

  • Turning off the chime in the DVD player

There is an incredibly loud and annoying chime that happens whenever you hide or bring up the controller in DVD player. Does anyone know of a way to turn this off? The funny thing is, it only happens when you use the keyboard shortcut.

Chime?!? I dont have a chime on my setup when I show or hide the controller (pressing opt-cmd-C).
Is the chime you're hearing one of the system notification sounds that're available in the "Sounds" control panel?

  • Xerox Color Qube 8570 - How to turn off startup configuration report page?

Our printing at work sometimes will print off a Startup page and then continue to print lines on different pages of just symbols. This last print job reach up to 68 pages, which of course is a nightmare of wasteful paper. Does anyone know how to stop this from printing?

In CWIS go to Properties > General > Printer Defaults and disable the Startup page  As for garbage prints, That sounds like a PS error. And they are almost always due to improperly embedded fonts. Have all your users switch the following in their drivers (Picture is the global driver, but the regular driver will have the same option.) Essentially by default the printer uses its own locally stored fonts on the jobs, but when the fonts are misunderstood, or unknown it winds up printing wingdings.

  • How to turn off startup sound

The startup sound is not necessary; most applications do not have one
Especially when my speakers are up higher than I realized, this can become a problem.
It would be nice if it were just taken out of future versions of Skype (or disabled by default), but I'm hoping that for now there is at least an option/means to disable it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Do you mean the sound it makes when you log into Skype? If you go into Skype preferences (just press "Cmd - ," if you can't find it) under "Notifications", and then under "Details", when the dropdown menu next to "Event:" says "When I sign in", you can uncheck the tickbox next to "Play sound". Hope it helps.

  • How do i turn off automatic plugin check on startup... I have turned off in options/advanced, but still checks on startup

on firefox startup I get two tabs... one for google (my home page) the other for plugin check. I go to tools/advanced and turn off startup check for plugins, the restart firefox... the plugin check tabe still appears. All of my plugins are up to date!!! How do I stop this auto plugin check from taking place each time I start up firefox? This never was a problem before, just started yesterday and I can't stop it.

I started using Fire Fox to get away from this crap. I consider this forced plug in thing to be a tracking Trojan and pop up adds. It's my opinion this has become no different than I.E. or any other Micro Soft application where I loose control of how I manage my own computer applications by having things forced on me that I necessarily don't want. I plan to quit using Fire Fox until I am assured this doesn't happen any more and and feel confident my browsing and other web activity is not being monitored and tracked by Mozilla. What other data and applications can we assume they are looking at on our computers? I think if this is the direction they are now headed, other folks should do the same thing.
