Turning off monitor detection?

Is there a way to turn of monitor auto-detection. I am using a kvm and have the a monitor hooked up as primary desktop on external dvi connector. Using iMac display as secondary monitor. Every time I use kvm to switch to another monitor the resolution gets reset and the anything i have on the secondary (main iMac) screen gets shifted over because primary sceens is resized to a lower resolution. How can i turn off autodetection or lock in the main screen resolution?

Hi calaban9
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Turn off Mirroring!
If you use Extended Desktop you can choose a resolution for each display, that should not change when the external is switched off.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303086
Resolutions
+When you connect the adapter to the computer, the screen may refresh momentarily as the computer prepares itself for the new video output. When the computer is mirroring video, it tries to synchronize the resolution of the built-in and external displays. If they can't be matched, the computer will change the resolution of both screens to the highest common resolution which may cause areas of the built-in display to be blacked out.+

  • [SOLVED] How to turn off monitor at CLI

    Hi
I've been trying to find a way to turn off my monitor, but the solutions I've found were almost all for X environment.
The best hint I've got was add following lines to /etc/rc.local:
    setterm -blank 1
    setterm -powersave on
    setterm -powerdown 1
With that, monitor was suppose to blank screen after 1 minute and, after another 1 minute, shutdown. But it only blanks and nothing more. Without the first line: "setterm -blank 1", it just don't do anything.
Does anybody has idea of what else should I try?
        Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Nezmer
Even with aliases, I would have to type von with monitor turned off.
I've done a script, witch is not a perfect solution, but works fine.
    monitor_off:
    #!/bin/bash
    # Check if X is running or not, turn off monitor, #
    # wait for a key press and turn it on again. #
    grep_result_file=$PWD'/x_running'
    # Check if X is running.
    ps -e | grep -e "\bX\b" > $grep_result_file
    ps -e | grep -e "\bxorg\b" >> $grep_result_file
    ps -e | grep -e "\bxserver\b" >> $grep_result_file
    ## If you want to check result file, uncomment following lines.
    #echo "===== $grep_result_file - begin ====="
    #cat $grep_result_file
    #echo "===== $grep_result_file - end ====="
    if [ ! -s $grep_result_file ] || [[ $(tty) =~ tty ]] || [[ $(tty) =~ vc ]]; then
echo 'Detected X not runnig or you are at console...'
    if [ $UID -ne 0 ]; then
echo 'You need super user privileges to run this script at console.'
echo 'Rerun as super user or start X and run from a terminal.'
    exit 0
    fi
    turn_off='vbetool dpms off'
    turn_on='vbetool dpms on'
    else
    echo 'Detected X running...'
    turn_off='xset dpms force off'
    fi
    echo 'Turning off monitor...'
    $turn_off
echo 'Waiting for a key press...'
    read -n1 -s
    echo 'Turning on monitor...'
    $turn_on
    rm $grep_result_file
    echo 'Finished: monitor_off'
It checks if X is running or not because at X environment vbetool was a little slow, at least for me.
    That's it!
I hope this could be useful for someone else.
    Thank you for helping, guys.
    Vinícius
P.S.: I'm setting this thread as solved, but any suggestion about the script is welcome.

  • Turn off display detect

I have my tv connected to my mac book pro and if I switch from the pc port to tv my mac thinks I disconnected the display and turns off the extended screen. Is there a way to turn off auto detect?

    Hello t:
Since you are running third party software that affects sleep (and so forth), I think your first place to start would be with the people that make insomniaX.

  • Bug: Windows 7 DLL call to turn off monitor message crashes LabVIEW 10.0f2

    Hi,
I wanted to log this bug on the forum. I have already logged this with NI UK Support: CAR# 286873
I was trying to find a way to turn off a laptop lcd
monitor during measurements. I was trying to replicate this
    http://codereflect.com/2009/04/03/how-to-programmatically-turn-onoff-your-monitor/
    which uses windows messaging.
I found the attached Monitor-1.vi somewhere on the forum that seems to do the above.
However when I run the VI it crashes LabVIEW 10.f2 on Windows 7 32-bit.

  • Turn off Face Detection

Is there any way to turn off face detection? Sometimes we want to do 3-way video conference between large conference rooms. Also is there anyway we can keep the wide screen 1080P image when we are doing 3-way conferencing? Thanks!

    Hi,
    1.  It is by design and I cannot find any methods to disable the function of Face Detection. Video is enhanced with face detection and smart framing, so that a participant’s video moves to help keep them centered
    in the frame.
    2.  High-definition video (up to 1080p resolution) is supported in conferences for Lync 2013. You can refer to the link below of “Lync Client Video Requirements”:

  • ITunes disables Power Options- Turn Off Monitor

If I just run iTunes on my Windows XP PC my monitor no longer turns off after the "Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes->Turn off monitor" time period has expired. The monitor stays on contiuously. This issue exists even if I exit iTunes. I need to manually go into control panel and reset the "Turn off monitor" setting.
I suppose there might be a reason iTunes wants to disable this when it's executing but how about putting this energy saving setting back they way it found it when I exit iTunes.
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks,
    J

  • GT70 BSOD or Stuck after Windows puts it to sleep mode of turns off monitor

    Hi Everyone!
i have an  issue (or 2) with my laptop.
    both happens when:
    1) whenever i put the laptop into sleep mode or either windows does so automatically (inactive period), - the laptop will go to sleep just fine.
    2) windows turns off monitor after a period of inactivity. (sleep mode due to inactivity was disabled in this case)
in both the cases i mentions above, if i wake the computer within lets say 5 minutes, it'll turn on just fine.
but after a certain period of time passes it wont.
with the sleep mode, the computer will wake and will then produce a BSOD STOP error 0x4 and restart.
with monitor turned off it'll simply wont turn on, not responding to neither keyboard, mouse or power button. - i have to do a hard reboot
    any ideas?
    anything i can check?
note the laptop just came back from a warranty repair, so all parts have been tested and been found ok!
    system specs:
    MSI GT70-0ND
CPU: Intel Core i7-3630QM 2.4GHz (Intel GPU HD 4000 included)
    Memory: 16GB DDR3
    Storage: 750GB HDD 7200rpm
128GB SSD (Patriot Pyro SE) - OS installed on this.
GPU: 4GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 675MX
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    Thanks in Advance!!

i dont think i have the same problem as in the other thread.
    my bios:
my laptop doesnt restart when my screen is turned off and i try to wake it. it would simply wont wake up.
and my BSOD happens only after i wake the laptop from sleep mode and only if it been in sleep mode for a while. meaning i if i wake it up within a few mins of going to sleep it'll boot justfine.

  • Turn off Auto Detect Settings in IE using GPO

As a follow-up on some kind of bug in sharepoint ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointgeneral/thread/f3dbe651-be99-491b-8c6c-fc4792ae0b22 ) I need to turn off Auto detect settings in IE on all my clients, as this speeds up sharepoint
    on many clients.
"The Internet Explorer Maintenance settings can be set in two modes: policy mode (to enable by Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy\Internet Explorer Maintenance policy processing) or preference mode(to enable by right-clicking
Internet Explorer Maintenance)." (snipped from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverGP/thread/57d81da5-de30-4930-8649-197d204b2a6c )
Well, I have problem configuring Automatically detect settings. I have no trouble changing other parts of the same policy (changes are applied to all my computers), e.g. trusted sites and such. However I cannot turn off Auto Detect settings. I wonder if unchecking
Auto Detect Settings really means "no change"/unconfigured?
Is the only option then to use a hardcoded reg change?
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ControlPanel\Autoconfig ?

As of IE10/11, this should be set in Group Policy Preferences:  [https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn338129.aspx]
    User Configuration
       └ Preferences
          └ Control Panel Settings
             └ Internet Settings
    Create a new IE10 configuration.
Remember you can enable or disable these settings within a preference item by pressing function keys:
    F5
Enable all settings on the current tab.
    F6
    Enable the currently selected setting.
    F7
    Disable the currently selected setting.
    F8
Disable all settings on the current tab.

  • Lock screen + turn off monitor

So I'm currently using slock to lock the screen, and It's working perfectly: I press the hotkey, the screen blanks and doesn't come back on until I've entered my password.
Is there any way to do exactly the same thing but with the screen turning off? The command "xset dpms force off" but it comes back on at the slightest touch and I'd like it to stay off until the password is entered.
    thanks!

Geissler wrote:2. The screen doesn't stay off until a password is entered, only until it detects user input, at which point you can only turn it back off by executing the command once more.
I use a simple script for slock and dpms handling:
    ( slock && xset dpms 0 0 60 ) &
    xset dpms 0 0 2
    xset dpms force off
This essentially turns off the monitor after 2s while running slock and restores the dpms timeout setting (60s) after slock terminates.

  • Turning off monitor

I'm using my imac as a video server and have eyetv running. I'd like to turn the monitor off at times and I have tried using the shift option up arrow which works for about 5 minutes until something wakes up my imac and the screen turns on. I went to an apple genius and they suggested "kiosk mode" but I can't find any option for turning the screen off. It is a waste of power to run the screen al the time, not to mention light that is turning on and off all night which is a bother.
Is there any way to turn the screen off until I want to turn it back on?

I think there is an answer here: http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.19/19.12/KioskModeFeatures/index.htm l
But, it require some programming effort.
    And, there is http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2002/tn2062.html
    And, more http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/saft.html

  • Turn off scene detection?

Three years ago I edited a project on FCP, then recorded it back to mini DV tape.
Now, when I try to import that tape, imovie rearranges all the shot, cuts out the transitions,
and makes each one a separate shot. It imports everything, but cuts it up and rearranges everything.
Is there some way to turn off the scene detection? I've tried using the manual import, but that does no better.

No, sorry, there is no way to turn this off. This is the default behaviour of iMovie 09. It does not play well with older, edited projects from the Apple software offerings. The transitions will not work in the new iMovie.
You can try iMovie 6 HD and see if that works. Or start from scratch.

  • Is there any ways for me to turn off the detection of keywords about time in Reminders?

    Hi, everyone!
I don't know how many of you use Reminders frequently. Anyway, I am. Reminders has a acute keywords detecting system which detects keywords concerning time in order to auto-fill the time section which you might later fill in. It's a great function. However, it comes to me very tricky when I simply want to type in some time ( like 2hrs every day for this activity ). Can anyone tell me how to turn this function off temporarily? If not, can Apple make improvement on it?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Turning OFF face detection!!

I keep forgetting to ask this.
Using Aperture 3. Every time I open an old library Ap3 needs to upgrade the library. Cool. But then once the library is open Aperture continues to do a 'face detection' search that goes on forever and drives me nuts. I never use 'face detection', don't want to use it. Is there any way I can stop Aperture's auto detect mode? Can't seem to find anything in preferences, but maybe I'm missing something.
    All ears,
    Ben

Aha! Maybe I can answer my own question. Just went back to 'preferences' ... no longer bleary eyed after a long day's work. And I see a 'faces' option in the general preferences. I just turned it off. Now we'll see what happens.
Aperture just decided to update that particular library, looks like it's going to take hours.
I notice that whenever I'm running Aperture libraries from this particular drive ... I hear the drive grinding away ALL the time. I'm wondering if this is normal for Aperture, constantly doing invisible background work - even when all I'm doing is viewing (not altering the photos)?

  • HELP! Connecting shuffle to cradle turns off monitor

Hi, I've been having this intermittent problem that really starting to annoy. Sometimes while connecting my shuffle to the USB cradle my monitor will loose the video signal and go blank (looses video signal). Seems that the shuffle needs only to touch in male prong for the problem to happen. The only way to get the display working again is to reboot the PC.
Here's what I have: 2nd gen 1 gig silver shuffle, Vista (SP1), 4 gig ram, C2D 3.0 ghz, Asus EP35-DS3R motherboard, GeForce 7200GS GPU, Gateway 2200 connected via DVI
Oh, yes the problem happens no matter which USB input I use. I've updated all hardware and software, but I still have the problem.
Anyone have any suggestions or a similar problem?

    Thanks,
don't know why it'd matter if I had a warranty or not since the function
in question is apart of what I'm supposed to be getting w/ cost of computer.
Time to load the overpriced 1 ton computer into the car and demand they fix it at the apple store. This is absurd since I originally bought this computer for music creating and it's the most unreliable computer EVER as far as stability for music. My audiophile records for like 10 sec. before the sound cuts out, everytime, but of course that's not apple's fault.
Never buying apple again. This is straw that broke the camels back. Anyone wanna trade a pc for my G5?
Sorry for the venting but this is where I draw the line!
    Thanks,
    Henry
