Tweening - Mac vs PC

When I learned Flash I was taught that you must always
convert your graphic to a symbol before you can do a Motion Tween.
I work on a Mac, and I have found that that is the case. If I don't
make a symbol first, it doesn't work. Today I was teaching some
kids beginning Flash. We were working on PCs. I told them the rule
I had learned, that they must convert their graphic to a symbol.
One kid said, "no you don't. I can make a motion tween without
making it a symbol." And in fact, he could. I tried it too, and it
worked.
Now I'm confused. I came home to my Mac, and tried to make a
motion tween without making a symbol, and I got the little dotted
lines instead of the arrow. Do the Mac and PC behave differently? I
found on the PC if I didn't make a symbol first sometimes I had
problems, but sometimes it worked. I also noticed that on the PC
graphics had a box around them, like they were grouped. To edit
them you had to double-click. That's not the case on a Mac. Maybe
the motion tween worked because they start out grouped. But then,
why didn't it always work?
As I said, I am teaching Flash to kids. Sometimes when they
make a tween they get the little dots instead of the arrow, but it
appears to still work. When I say to them, "there's something wrong
if it has the little dots," they reply, "but it still works." What
can I say to that? What reason can I give that they should do it
over, even if it works?

I agree with Thomas - just because you can does not make it
good practice - if you allow flash to
auto-generate symbols for you (by applying a motion tween
before converting to a symbol) then you
start to lose control over the organization of your symbols
and library. Soon your library will be
filled with "Tween 1", "Tween 2", "Tween 3", etc......

  • Shape Tween edit will not save on Mac OS X

The file that I am working on has a shape tween that I added, but when I go to save the file, the save bar pops up and everything seems fine. When I open that file again the shape tween is not saved and is not even there anymore.
I am running Mac OS X

I am trying to watch the on demand videos on the xfinity website. According to the website it says the minimum requirement is Flash 10.0.42

  • Flash (is it for me?), Wacom Cintiq 22HD, and Mac Mini

I have Flash as part of the CS6 Master Suite, which I purchased primarily for InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere, but as yet I haven't opened Flash. I'm hoping someone here can save me time by advising me whether Flash is suitable for my purposes. I'm not a professional, just a keen amateur, but I do want to use quality software and equipment to do the finest job I can.
Answers to a previous post in the Illustrator forum (Re: Animation – is Illustrator what I should be using?) suggested that I try Flash.
    Background
I'll be using Premiere for converting my audio-visuals to HD format. Back in the 1980s I was right into three-screen slide shows. As part of the transforming, I'll be introducing a small number of video clips (hence my need for Premiere) and also short animation sequences, probably 10 seconds at most. The animation will be done by an artist friend who is keen to extend his talents into computer art. If I buy the computer (some sort of Mac), a Cintiq, load the appropriate software, and then loan it all to Steve and show him how to use it, he'll happily spend as much time as required for the animation. We're bartering: he gets to use a computer and tablet for as long as he wants, I get animation.
A typical animation might involve Steve drawing outlines at appropriate intervals, over a background, then having the software generate the in-betweens. Watercolour-style shading (i.e. not fill-type, monotone colour) would be added, probably manually for each frame, unless the tweening can competently handle watercolour-style shading. For some of Steve's doodlings on his iPad (simplified versions of what we're aiming for), check out http://www.mediafire.com/download/sj731c17co55g5w/Steve's_iPad_Work.zip
We're both new to this and recently spent an afternoon together looking at videos on Flash and the Cintiq. The combination looks like it will work for us, but I have a few questions which I'm hoping some of the experts on this forum can answer. A simple yes or no may save me hours of reading documentation only to find out that something won't work as I want. I'll also include some questions about the Cintiq and Mac Mini in case someone who uses them with Flash can provide answers. I live in a place where I have no access to these devices before I buy. I have to buy 'cold'. Thus my wariness.
Please note: I'm not an artist and Steve isn't computer literate. So some of these questions might appear pretty dumb to an experienced user of Flash/Cintiq.
    Ques 1
Is Synfig Studio (as suggested at the end of my Illustrator thread) something I should consider? Or is Flash a better bet?
    Ques 2
Does Flash have vector tools that mimic a watercolour paintbrush like in Photoshop? Or is that not possible as a vector, and such effects have to be done outside Flash and then imported as background (or other method)?
    Ques 3
When a Flash animation is finished, how is it exported, for example, to Premier? Do you export as h.264?
    Ques 4
It is not clear to Steve and I after viewing three Cintiq videos, how the Cintiq interfaces to Flash. Does the Cintiq know about Flash, and appropriates certain drawing tools automatically? Or do you have to tell Flash (or the Cintiq) that this button on the Cintiq now operates this tool in Flash?
    Ques 5
Do Flash and Cintiq work well together – and easily?
    Ques 6
Do I need a monitor to be able to use Flash with the Cintiq? Or would a Mac Mini be a suitable computer – with the Cintiq acting as monitor? Steve won't ever be using this setup as a computer. He'll be treating the Cintiq as a canvas on which to draw and paint.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Hi Guy,
I thought I was the only one around who was old enough to have worked on wide screen multi-image slide shows!
Flash may be the right product for you and Steve. I use Flash with an Intuos 4 tablet and it works fine. What you want to do is to search the Flash forums for references to Cintiq. There may be some problems that interfere with your intended use, or it may work exactly as you want. The important element for working with any Wacom product is to be sure that you are using the latest drivers for the Wacom product.
If you choose to use a mac mini, get a new one, one that can use a lot of memory, you'll need it.
You can export Flash files to video in most any file type and compression is installed on the computer. So, if you're going to use a Mac, install Quicktime Pro and you should have everything that you need.
I have never heard of or used Synfig Studio, so I can't comment on that.
Flash's paint tools are different from Photoshop and more similar to Illustrator's. You will have all of the flexibility of the Cintiq to control painting effects, it will take some practice, but you should be able to get the effect that you're describing.
Hope this helps with your decision.

  • IPad won't stay connected to Mac via USB

I was attempting to install the latest update to my iPad2 via the USB cable connected to my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina with the latest Mavericks and iTunes update installed. I left the download and install to complete overnight as it was taking a long time. When I checked it in the morning, my iPad was in recovery mode. I was supposed to reset the iPad back to factory specs. It would not recognize my last backup at all although it was on my Mac. I was finally able to get the iPad back to its original factory software. I then tried to update to that backup. Somewhere along the line during that effort, the iPad went back into recovery mode again.
Since that time whenever I plug in the iPad using the usb connector to the Mac, the connection begins to fluctuate rapidly on and off. It does not maintain a connection for even a whole second! I then tried connected the iPad using a different USB cable and after that a different USB port. Finally I even tried it using a hub as a go-be-tween. None of these options worked. I then tried connecting the iPad to a power outlet to charge to see if there was a problem there. It connected to power just fine and charged the  iPad.
At this point I'm stymied and don't know what else I can or should try. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't imagine that this would help but have you tried resetting the iPad and then try recovery mode again? It may not help, but it can't hurt anything at this point. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appear on the screen. After it restarts, try to restore again.
If that fails, do you have another computer that you could use to try to restore on?

  • Tween problems in ActionScript 3.0

    Hello!
I'm stuck with my problem and I have no idea what is wrong. I'm making movement of movie clip via creating new Tween in Action Script 3, Flash CS4 and it happens, when I mouse over button in another movie clip. The problem is that movement sometimes work perfectly, but sometimes it gets stuck in middle of movement and continues only if I mouse over again. Here is the code of function of first frame in main scene:
    import fl.transitions.Tween;
    import fl.transitions.easing.*;
    function btnOver(I:Number) {
    var tw: Tween = new Tween(somemovieclip, "x", Strong.easeOut, somemovieclip.x, I, 1, true);
Here is how I'm calling that function from another movie clip when I mouse over a button:
    function over(eventObject:MouseEvent) {
    (root as MovieClip).btnOver(288);
    btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, over);
I have several motions like this - for each button different variable for x position (number "I"). I also have another movie clip playing at the same time, but it isn't connected with any of movie clips mentioned above.
Does anybody have an idea what is wrong?
P.S.: I'm on Mac with latest flash player and movie works better in Windows - it has less mistakes, but still they happen very rare. Probably the problem is somewhere inside player or something like that?
    Thanks!

It looks like the problem is that you only have one Tween instance to work with. If you start one tween and start another before the first has completed, the first one has to stop working because that one Tween instance has to jump over to the new tween that's just been called.
You probably want to set up an individual tween for each button. You might also want to look into using something like TweenLite/TweenMax instead of the built in Flash tweening. Have a look at: http://blog.greensock.com/tweenmax/

  • Crash on Tweening a TextField with a mask AS3 CS3

I have yet to hunt down exactly what it is about this
situation that makes it crash, but when I tween the position of a
TextField that has a mask, as soon as I close the movie window the
program crashes, whether it be in the Flash (CS3) IDE or in a
    browser.
In detail: I have a movie where I'm creating 1000 instances
of a movieclip (little dots) and when the mouse rolls over one i
instantiate another movieclip, call it box. I then dynamically
create a textfield inside the box and give it a mask (a generated
sprite that is just a rectangle half the width of the box, which is
added to the box's display list). Finally, I tween the x position
of the TextField, giving the effect of the text sliding out from
the edge of the box. When I test the movie in Flash this works fine
but as soon as I close the window Flash crashes, in a browser
window when I close the window I get the spinning beach ball of
death. If I dont add a mask to the TextField, I dont have this
problem at all. I will test this on a PC tomorrow, but as of yet
can only confirm on a Mac.
Has anyone ever encountered something like this?
I dont have the code in front of me, but it is really what
youd imagine, along the lines of (NOTE: this is not my exact
    code):

I have the same problem in version CS6. I assume Adobe hasn't done anything about it?

  • Tearing on tweens on pc platforms

Looking for a bit of help here... or at least wondering if
    anyone else notices this.
So far I've gone to every flash site i can.....
    on three separate computers....
made tons of simple tween swfs to test this....
done mouse scrollers and any kind of motion i can.
time and time again on a mac everything looks great.
time and time again on any pc i've observed image tearing
    while in motion.
sometimes it is minimal, other times it is so extreme it
    renders the work unusable.
i'm seeing this in actual professional websites too.... but i
can't find anyone talking about it.
has anyone experienced this tearing and jittering of movement
in flash on all PCs or is it just me?
    am i going nuts here?
    nothing i do fixes this.

I run XP - have been on several machines since it came out -
    Flash and the
Flash player have always run flawlessly on this platform - I
    avoid Vista
like the plague for my own reasons. I don't experience the
    "tearing" you
mention. Is it possible to nab a screenshot?

  • No tweening, but still lagging

Just when I think I've got a good understanding of Flash, I
come across something that I never would have thought about before.
I was always told that if I animate everything through
actionscript, it will run much more smoothly than if I used
tweening. Now I animate everything through actionscript, but I'm
still having problems with my apps lagging. Would it have to do
with the stage being 1366x768? I know that's an unusually large
size for flash to push out. I work on a very good/fast mac, so I
don't think it has to do with the computer I'm running it on. I
read something recently about conserving CPU usage by calling upon
scripts only when needed. I didn't know I could even be executing a
script when I didn't need it. Is there something I'm completely
    missing here?

my flash movies do load graphics on a large scale. i noticed
that when i scale my swf down, the movie runs flawless, but when i
scale it up it starts to lag. that probably has to do with loading
all those objects. my coding is very simple and i apply it directly
to the movie clips that i'm targetting so the code only exists when
that movie clip is on the stage. are there any quick fixes (or any
fixes for that matter) that might keep my movie from lagging as
much? are png files that much worse than jpg files?

  • 2 types of Motion tweens ?!?

I have noticed a difference between motion tweens created by
the context menu ( ie right clicking on a PC and selection Create
Motion Tween) and creating two seperate frames and then selecting
motion tween from the Properties bar.
These are represented on the time line ... both in blue ....
bowever if you use the context menu you end up with a black dot for
each of the 2 keyframes however the second keyframe doesnt have a
black vertical line to the left of it.
What is the differnece here ? Has it got to do with the sync
    option ?
For a visual reference check out ...
    http://www.silverstone.co.za/temp/timeline.gif

    I should add,
To synchronize the animation of graphic symbol instances with
the main Timeline, select the Sync
    option in the Property inspector.
Note: Modify > Timeline > Synchronize Symbols and the
Sync option both recalculate the number of
frames in a tween to match the number of frames allotted to
    it in the Timeline.

  • Shape Tween Trouble

    Hi
    (using Mac OS snow leopard)
I'm animating a character in Flash CS6:  the character is composed of graphic symbols that make up the various body parts and have a dark colored Stroke that outlines each symbol.  Some the symbols used for the limbs however have outlines where a section of the Stroke is colored to resemble the Fill color: in order to make the symbols appear connected smoothly (such as the arm symbol's Stroke is colored to resemble the torso's Fill color in the section where the arm would be anatomically be connected at the sholder).
Problem is when I shape tween inside the graphic symbol; the outline changes color in between each set of keyframes.
Is there any way I can get these symbols to shape tween and still maintain the outline the way its designed when on a keyframe?
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

    Hi Ned,
That is what I did orginally.  Unfortunately, instead of changing color, the stroke itself would fill in the area of the outline that I had removed.   Causing an effect that looked like a line started to grow when I would scrub on the timeline between each set of keyframes.

  • Flicker when tweening

Hi! I'm making a banner in flash, and are moving some simple objects around.
I mainy use vector squares, but when I tween them (classic tween) in a slow motion, the shape starts to "flicker" or "lag". Why is this?
I think there has to be something with the calculations Flash is doing, but why can't it make the animation smooth?
Is there any way to make Flash calculate more presicely, or make it stop flicker (without actioncript)?

    I use a Mac Pro, 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 8gb DDR2 RAM, so I don't think it's the computer...
And my framerate is set to 24fps, and that should really be enough... It not lag as usual. It's almost as if the timeline sometimes jums a frame back or something. The shape jumps back and forth some pixels... I tried to adjust my fps to a really high level, but the flickering is still there.

  • Position Tweening Not Working

Photoshop CS3. When I tween between frames in an animation with Position selected, the program dupes the first selected frame the number of times specified but does not tween the object's position. So if I specify five frames, I get five dupes of the first frame with no movement of the object towards its position in the target frame.
The program does tween the Opaque option when that is selected.
Oddly, the same problem occurs in both my Photoshop CS3 and my ImageReady CS.
Could there be something in my computer that's preventing the Position tweening feature from working?
    Mac G4 866, 1GB RAM, OS 10.4.11.

I did some position tweening in 2007 on Windows PS CS3 and had no problem. Now for the first time I'm trying it in Windows PS CS4 and I'm having exactly the problem you are!!!! I restarted PS and problem continued. I have no idea what else to try besides go find CS3 running somewhere. I'm using current rev, 11.0.2.

  • Animation. tween for scale transformations

mac, mac osX 10.5.3., photoshop cs3.
When I use the basic animation palette of Photoshop and from one frame to another I am not able to get a motion tween between scale transformation of an object/layer.
When I scale something on a frame it comes to be scaled the same in each frame of the animation.
What is that I make wrong, guys?
    thanks a lot
    antonella

Expand the layer and look for the difference settings and you will see each setting has a stop watch you have to activate the stopwatch for each type of transformation, scale position, color transparency etc. You do so by starting the transformation at the point in the timeline where it will begin in your scene you click the stopwatch, that will automatically make a keyframe at each point along the time line you make a change in the preview window.
    Hope that is clear.
Oh wait as second you are talking frame by frame , there is no tweening, it is frame by frame you have to move for each frame manually and set the the frame delay.
I am wrong about that it should work from the flyout menu tween and set that number of frames. and what you want tweened.
I never noticed they offered this wonderful feature to frame by frame.
Make a frame place or create your art. make a new frame , move your art, change the color and or opacity if you desire and scale if desired then from the timeline flyout choose tween select how many frames you want to add and click ok. Then select the first frame of that tween and shift click on the last to change the duration if you do not like the 6.6 seconds delay to some thing like 0.1 seconds, which is what the delay of your vision is. The 6.6 second default delay is probably for a slide show.
Now play your animated tweened clip.
This will help you make a transition to the time line rather then using frame by frame.
The time line is far more powerful and you will love the co9ntrol you have and Premiere and AE is even better and this will help you make that transition as well.

  • Tween Class not working in Projector

    Hi all...
I have a very strange problem. I have a slideshow that uses
the Tween class to fade between jpg images. In the swf file and in
the standalone flash player, everything works just great. However,
when I make a projector file from the fla, either from within
Flash, or from the standalone player, the transitions stop working.
This behavior is identical on both a PC and a Mac.
Does anyone have a clue why projector would behave
    differently?
    Thanks.

  • Flash CS3 Fade tween nightmare

    Mac OSX 10.5.2 Leopard
    Flash CS3 Trial
    Hi All,
My text fade tween seems to be corrupt. The font (Arial)
shows bits missing and other bits filled in?
The text field is static, I have broken the text apart twice
and the tween shows arrows between the key frames. But when I test
movie it looks really weird. Sometimes it even moves the text
    about!!!????
I have tried embedding the font and this has not made any
    difference.
    Please help.

By weird i mean the text has diagonal sections missing. The
tips of the characters flicker and sometimes just one letter fades
    in and out. Quite random.
