Tweens as Graphic Symbols in Flash CS3

Greetings,
I am teaching a basic Flash CS3 course at a college in Ohio.
I am having something weird happening with some of my students'
projects that I can't explain.
For five of my students every time they apply a simple motion
tween to a graphic symbol, Flash CS3 automatically saves the tween
as a new graphic symbol in the library panel (naming it "tween 1",
"tween 2", etc.).
Since they are just learning the program this has
understandably confused these five students on how tweening and the
library panel works. Other students are doing exact or similar
tweens and they are not having this problem. I have worked with
Flash for years and have never had this happen to me.
Would anyone know how I can correct this? Is this something
that I can change in the preferences?
Thanks for your help!

Hmm, it works for me all the time :)
This is what I do.
I open new document and library in the same time CTRL L, and
immediately draw shape using
the rectangle tool. Then I select frame 30 (sample only) and
insert new frame using the F6 key.
I right click the first frame and create motion tween. The
very moment I do this, I get two
new instances appearing in the library.
Best Regards

  • How to change the alpha of a graphic symbol in flash depending on score

i'm making a game and i don't know what script to use to change the alpha color of the graphic symbol i used.
the game is a shooting game, ex: target points is 50, if the score is 25 the alpha color should be at 50%, if  score is 50 alpha is at a 100%
    hope someone could help..thanks!!!

if that's a movieclip button and skeleton_mc is on the same timeline as the button, you'll need to use:
    _parent.skeleton_mc._alpha = score*2;
if that doesn't work, in that button press, add:
    trace("button "+this);
and on the timeline that contains skeleton_mc, add
    trace("skeleton "+skeleton_mc);
and paste the output panel results here.

  • Creating metadata in Flash CS3 and reading it in AS3

Is there a way to store metadata in a library symbol in Flash
CS3, and then read it in AS3? For example, I want to have the
    following code run:
    m_Metadata = 'You're cool!'
I need this data before I can play the movie clip. Is there a
way to store this? I've been trying to find a solution, but it
looks like I'm just going to have to load in a separate XML file
    with the data.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately there's no simple way to add instance level
code in Flash CS3 or CS4 with AS3. This is a significant authoring
    tool deficiency in my opinion.
Making a component... depending on what you want to do, there
can be a lot of overhead. There may also be some very flaky/buggy
behavior in Flash CS3 with custom components if your experience is
anything like mine. However, for basic metadata, try this:
    1. Select the Symbol in the Library
    2. Right click, choose Component Definition...
    3. In the Parameters data grid you can add
parameters/properties. Make sure you set the "Variable" field as a
unique identifier for each parameter. These are the properties
you'll use in AS at runtime to retrieve the values.
    4. Now on each instance on the canvas you can go to the
Parameters tab and enter custom values for each parameter.
    5. At runtime, you should be able to access the values via
    instance_name.variable_name
I believe that will work without actually creating a
component class and making it functional.

  • Flash cs3 "Motion tweening will not occur on layers with ungrouped..."

I am getting the error message: flash cs3 "Motion tweening will not occur on layers with ungrouped shapes or on layers with more than one group or symbol"
I have only one symbol in the layer, a graphic.
Does anyone know how I can correct the "problem"?
    Thanks in advance.
    karen.

as the above poster mentioned I am guessing you have more than one object on that layer. you may have created a symbol from a shape and not selected the stroke.. that is pretty common.
to verify what is on a particular keyframe do a "select all" cntrl-a or cmd-a. maybe you will see more than one item selected.
look at the properties panel. if you have only one thing it will note the symbol or it will say "mixed".
perform this test in the first and last keyframe.

  • How can I convert many .png's to graphic symbols at once in Flash CS6?

So, just as the subject says, how do I convert a ton (like over 2,000) .pngs quickly and easily to graphic symbols?
I really dont want to have to drag each one to the stage, hit f8,  and name it, for each one.
I understand that, back in the CS3 days (im using CS6), it would autonatically generate them when you imported them to the library, is there a setting that I can turn on to have this happen?
    Thank you for your time,
    Obsidn

Select the directory with your pngs in it.
    Right-click>Browse with Adobe Bridge
    Select your pngs
Tools>Photoshop>Load to photoshop layers (not sure how many layers this can handle--you may wind up having to do this in batches)
    Save your new psd
In Flash, create a new symbol with a blank timeline
Ctrl-R, navigate to the psd you made earlier
    Select all the Photoshop layers
Check "create MovieClips for these layers."
Convert layers to keyframes or flash layers (not important, since you probaby don't need to keep this symbol)
    OK
You'll have Movie Clips, not Graphic Symbols, but maybe you can write or find a JSFL to convert them and then you can block select them, click the Properties button, and change the type from MovieClip to Graphc.

  • Importing Illustrator CS3 files into flash CS3 to tween

    Hello,
I'm definitely not a flash pro so I would like some help!
I'm trying to animate a man in Flash CS3 who was drawn in
    illustrator CS3.
I've imported all the layers but when I try to tween them
only the ones that have a single path tween correctly. Can you only
tween single path layers or am I being an idiot?
Many thanks and I look forward to your comments!

you can actually make illustrator drawings into symbols for
use in Flash CS3 while they're still in Ai. I would try that
approach first. There are some video tutorials on Adobe's site-
    I've lost the link.
That takes it out of the multi-layer wackiness, and puts
    everything together in nice packages.
Hopefully I'm not telling you something you already know X

  • Graphic Symbol First Frame Issues with Tweening

I'm working on some fairly detailed character animations, and accordingly have made most of the characters parts into graphic symbols. For instance, his hand is a graphic symbol which has multiple frames for each perspective or pose of the fingers, and I set the symbol to the proper frame in the characters main timeline.
I've been having issues, however, when tweening these symbols. I noticed this first when I was working on a jump animation and I just wanted the hand, once its pose is in a state which will be used for the majority of its frames, to tween up and rotate with the arm and body. When I create this tween, however, it forces all other frames of that graphic symbol to be set to that same frame. The start and end frames of the tween are set to the same first frame, and even after trying to manually fix the subsequent frames of the symbol, it wont let me. I've triple checked all my symbol names, frame numbers and settings, and anything else I can think of and everything is in place, so I really have no clue why this is happening.
Does anyone know how to fix this?? Thanks for any help!

Are you using new motion tweens with CS4?  If so, then that's "expected" in that new motion does not (yet) support changing symbol frames - only one object and one frame per tween span. You will need to use classic tweens or split the motion span.

  • Help: symbol shifting between mac and windows, flash cs3

I'm doing work reviewing flash files created by other users
on mac and windows. I'm using os x 10.5.6. When I open a file
created in windows / flash cs3 some symbols on the stage will have
shifted upwards on the y axis. If I correct the shift and then send
it back to the windows user they see the symbols incorrectly
aligned, as if I had moved symbols around on a correctly aligned
    file.
The strange thing is not everything on the stage is shifted.
Only particular symbols will move, and it's usually symbols only
(not text frames, drawing objects, etc).
I believe there's a general history of bad behavior when
saving flash files and trading them back and forth between mac and
windows, but does anyone know what may be causing this? Or a
    remedy?
    Thank you in advance.
    Peter

also, I tried opening the same files in vista using a mac
mini with vista installed on a bootcamp partition. When opening
other windows authored flash files there I had shifting issues as
well, so I'm not convinced it's strictly a mac vs. windows issue.
Unless it's a flash cs3 on windows xp doesn't like mac flash cs3
    and vista flash cs3...

  • Flash CS3 Fade tween nightmare

    Mac OSX 10.5.2 Leopard
    Flash CS3 Trial
    Hi All,
My text fade tween seems to be corrupt. The font (Arial)
shows bits missing and other bits filled in?
The text field is static, I have broken the text apart twice
and the tween shows arrows between the key frames. But when I test
movie it looks really weird. Sometimes it even moves the text
    about!!!????
I have tried embedding the font and this has not made any
    difference.
    Please help.

By weird i mean the text has diagonal sections missing. The
tips of the characters flicker and sometimes just one letter fades
    in and out. Quite random.

  • Does flash cs3 support Wacon Graphic tablets

I was thinking about buying a graphics tablet and I wanted to
know if they were supported by Flash CS3 and Photoshop CS3. I
assumed Photoshop would support them (correct me if I'm wrong) but
I was unsure about flash. Does anybody know if they are supported
    and if so was brands/models?

Yes, I use an Intuos 3 with it.

  • Colour changes when importing Illustrator graphics into Flash CS3

    Hi there!
I'm creating a Flash site, and all the graphics are imported
    from Illustrator.
Also, in the Illustrator file, there are some Phtoshop
graphics with shadow effects on it.
The problem is, that when I import the .ai into Flash, a
pretty strong colour change occurs: everything becomes lighter. And
the shadow, wich is black in Photoshop, turns white in Flash!
Is there a way to solve this problem? I searched the net, and
some people say it's an OSX thing, wich is pretty strange, because
Mac is an obvious choice for loads of designers.
    I've attached an image preview.
    Preview
    Thanks in advance!
    Alex

    Thanks for the anwsers!
However, the weird thing is, when I pick one of the photoshop
graphics, asign the profile to it, and import it into Flash, the
colors look fairly good. BUT when I import the complete Illustrator
file with alle the graphics in it, I still get the color shift. I
can now put all the graphics in the flash file, one at a time, but
I think thats not the most easy way to do it..

  • Flash CS3 will NOT export my flash video

Alright, so I want to start out by saying, I hate Microsoft
(always will, they will never get anything right) and if I had
1500+ bucks I would buy a mac, but I'm stuck with my XP machine.
My machine is a Dell (reformatted so that I don't have all
    Dell's "junkware"). I have a Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz with HT, 2GB DDR2
RAM, and a Radeon x600 HyperMemory 256MB graphics card. I also run
Windows XP and my version of CS3 is Web Premium (Student, but that
shouldn't make a difference.) So my machine is more than compatible
with Flash Pro CS3. But for some reason, when ever I do ANYTHING to
"Publish" my flash video, it (the one and only Windows XP) will
come up and say that Flash CS3 needs to close. I have tried Debug,
I'm pretty sure I've tried everything.
This is my first flash movie and so far I'm getting the worst
impression from my software. It's not anything that is REALLY
complicated, All I have is text tweening in and out of my canvas
(and yes they are converted to symbols).
Not quite sure what else to do other than give up. Please
    help me!

I am having a similar problem. Looks like this issue is languishing in Adobe's legendary support netherworld...

  • Quicktime movie export from Flash CS3 is skipping frame.

When I try to export Quicktime movie from Flash CS3, the
resulting mov file is skipping frames. i.e.: The movie is showing
    frame number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 15
    etc...
As you can see the frame number 7 is repeated 3 times and
frame 8 and 9 are nowhere to be found.
The last configuration I used is 960x540, Sorenson video 3
medium quality, 25 fps, keyframe every 25 frames. 6400 kbits/s.
I tried various configurations, with different codecs and even
with keyframe all frames and I always get simillar problems.
Anyone have an idea what is going on, and how to fix this?
    Thank you,
    Olivier.

The QT exporter in Flash is honestly my least favorite
feature - not the feature itself but how it
works (or how it doesn't work in some cases). For me it is
almost unusable unless you have a very
short timeline, small stage, lower frame rate - like AS
generated effects or something - otherwise,
for true frame accuracy to video output - it is not reliable
enough and not fast enough for any real
    world production environment.
So typically for me - I love SWF2Video (www.flashants.com) as
it takes any SWF and makes it into an
AVI that is frame accurate no matter what the frame rate is -
quite incredible - enough so that I
always felt it should have been bundled with Flash (as well
    as Wacom tablets).
Harmony is an incredible product - as is SOLO and TBS (Toon
Boom mStudio) - each of those programs
are dedicated animation programs designed for output to video
    - Flash has a lot of hats to fill and
it was never really designed for animation to video even
though many of us have found it suitable
for all intents and purposes as an animation program for full
    production.
But all in all - the quicktime exporter doesn't really
deliver how we would expect it too I am sorry
to say - I only hope it works as well as it does on the Mac
(Mac users could always choose to export
to Quicktime Video but not PC users).
For now if I am exporting to video I keep it all on the
timeline or nested in Graphic symbols or use
    the SWF2Video tool.
    hope this helps.

  • I cannot get an animated graphic symbol to be animated in my browser...

    Hello and thanks for looking...
I have followed this animation using bones and armatures tutorial:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/character_animation_ik.htmlhttp://
(which is superb and thanks to the poster)
My problem is that i cannot get them to be animated inside a browser.
I have created the armature and the poses etc. and I have then selected all the leg parts and converted them to a graphic symbol as per the instructions (i have nested the leg symbols inside the 'leg armature' symbol (point 12 near figure 27).  I have connected all the bones fine not a problem...
But if i then look at them in a browser they are not animated, but if i press play inside the little library window it is animated!
So each indivdual armature symbol works a treat in the library window (individually).  However when i save them as whole (i.e. a walk cycle symbol as per point 1 near figure 39) nothing is animated.  I have motion tweened them to move across the stage (so they have the frames to be animated) but there are no animated parts when previewed - the character just glides with no moving parts.
I have re-read it several times and cannot find what i am doing wrong!  It is probably something really simple and i am being dim - it would be nice if you could tell me how   Sorry if this is confusing. My head is hurting again.
    Thanks v much.
(just to note i did select AS3 and i have CS6)

    Dude your a superstar!
I read this and thought i had done that, but it turns out i needed to extend the frames before i converted to the last 'complete' symbol!
(i was half way through re doing it - and gettting annoyed!)
    Thanks ever so

  • Help!! Flash CS3 and CS4 "Test Movie" very slow on OS X

This is a problem that, having read many forums, affects a
very large amount of people, though Adobe doesn't care at all. It
only affects OS X users. I know that it has been addressed many
times in different forums, but I never actually stumbled across
    anyone having found a solution.
When I use Flash CS3, and I make any animation, even the
simplest tween, and I preview it with Test Movie, the result I get
is an extremely slow playback. Something like half the FPS it
    should be.
However, when I export the SWF and preview it in the external
Flash Player or in a browser, it's just fine and fast.
Another interesting thing is that in CS3, when I open the
Help panel, the problem with Test Movie only happens like 20% of
the time. In that case, it only gets solved if I restart or Log Out
at least. I have no idea why the Help panel being open solves the
problem, this only shows that this is probably a little graphic
user interface bug, or something similar, that could be solved very
    very easily.
In Flash CS4, there is no Help panel, so there is no solution
    to the problem.
It would be nice to be able to press Cmd + Enter to see the
movie, and not have to do File > Export > bla bla bla, open
