Two Macbooks, different N wireless speeds - why?

Ok, here is my issue. I have an Airport Extreme set to "802.11n Only" and both my wife's macbook and my macbook are the only machines on that network. She has the white MacBook 2.16 ghz version (MB062LL/A) while I have the 2.2 ghz Santa Rosa (MB062LL/B) that came out right after her model. For some reason her Transmit Speed is always at 300 while mine never tops out at 270. Location in the house does not change the fact her's gets the better transmit speeds.
Why is this happening?

are you both using 10.5.5? there are a number of factors that can cause this such as different chipsets, programs being used, settings on your macs, etc.

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!

Say no more.. upgrading to Mavericks.. any upgrade install is prone to issues.. the Mavericks one is the worst of any recent upgrades.
Lets just try and isolate the problem.
In the setup of the AE, give different names to the two wireless bands.. so go into the airport utility.. click the AE, Click edit.. click the wireless tab.. and now type in a new name.
    Try AE24ghz
Then click the wireless options and change the name for the 5ghz..
    Make it AE5ghz
    Then update the AE.
In the computer.. select either band.. and see if your other clients are affected if they use the band that the Mac is not using.
Alternatively turn off wireless in the macbook and use ethernet.. oh please please have a Mac with an ethernet port.. otherwise buy a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.. it is well worth having. wireless is never to be trusted.

  • Different wi-fi speed connection between my iMac and my Macbook Pro (both placed side by side)

I have purchased my iMac and my macbook pro at the same time and now I am facing something which I consider weird. The wi-fi connection speed in my iMac is fine but the wi-fi speed connection on my macbook pro is awful. It works as fine as the iMac if I connect it to a ethernet cable. I have put my macbook pro side by side with my iMac to try it and for my surprise, my macbook pro wi-fi speed connection was still lousy whilst the wi-fi speed connection from my iMac was nice... Does anyone face the same issue?

Non Apple router? Try restarting the router.
If you are using an Apple AirPort base station, try a different channel on the MacBook Pro.
Open AirPort Utility located in Applications > Utilities
Click on the base station icon then click Edit the select the Wireless tab then click Wireless Options.
Cick the first Channel pop up menu, select Automatic
Click the second Channel pop up menu, select Automatic
    Cick Save.
Give AirPort a minute to reset.
If automatic does not help, try a numbered channel from the pop up menu.

This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

    Hi Oneinspirit,
Time Machine backups can be paused by choosing "Stop Backing Up" from the Time Machine icon on the right hand side of your menu bar ( ). Once you're ready to resume the backup, you can choose "Back Up Now" from the same icon.
Start a backup: Click the Time Machine icon  in the menu bar, then choose Back Up Now.

  • Two MacBooks, Two Users, One MobileMe Family account

My wife and I both have MacBooks (different ones). We have a MobileMe Family account. Each laptop uses are unique MobileMe names, address books, calendars, etc... (i.e. I have an account, she has a MobileMe account). We both also have our own iPhone linked to these accounts respectively.
We also have a 'joint' MobileMe account (email and calendar only). This same joint account is the iTunes account for both of us.
We are still on MobileMe. I see lots of people having problems.
One problem I anticipate we will have is: How will iCloud know how to sync our accounts between hers, mine, and ours? There apparently is only one setting: ON and OFF.
We want our individual MobileMe accounts syncing email and calendars from our MacBooks and iPhones -- but our Joint account (iTunes, email, calendar) syncing to us both.
Is this going to be a mess on iCloud?
Thanks for any tips on how to better prepare for the conversion.

    Roger,
    Thanks for the reply.
I think I understand what you are saying.
I am wondering why the iCloud would be device-dependent. For instance, we have in our home two MacBooks, two iPhones, one iPad, one AppleTV. So, somewhat preciently knowing we'd eventually have more Apple devices, our main account (esp for iTunes) is our joint account. Joint email, calendar, and iTunes/iBooks content. Works great.
So, if we had a family with children with their own accounts, would it then not be possible for each person to have their own accounts and iCloud syncing off of, say, one home computer?
I recall in Steve Jobs's presentation that they 'demoted' the computer to just a device served by iCloud (much like the iPhone, iPad, etc... So, if an iPad can have multiple MobileMe accounts, as a MacBook may, why couldn't iCloud sync them all?
Thanks for the instruction -- just trying to figure out how to get things set up when we go to iCloud (we haven't turned it on yet for this reason).
I see in the discussions forums loads of issues from people switching over.
Maybe the right way to do it is each MacBook retains their accounts. Same with the iPhones. But turn off the other, shared accounts. Turn on iCloud...let it see everything, get synced: Computer A with iPhone A with iCloud Account A (email and contacts only). And Computer B with iPhone B with iCloud Account B (email and contacts only). Then add in the shared iCloud Account (email/calendar/iTunes only).
    Thoughts?

  • Wireless Speed explanation

    Hi every one
I have some problem in basic understanding of the wireless speed. can any one help me with this please?
When we are considering for example AC connection with 2x2 antenna (provided no noise and close to the AP) we expect around 20MBps speed. now the question is this speed only for 1 client? if there is another client in the room connected to the same AP would this speed dropped or share? how about a class of 30 students then?
and is there any thing we can do about client hugging the AP!? I mean when multiple clients copying file at the same time then one client is ok and the others are struggling! as soon as the first client finished then it would be replaced by another client with good speed and the rest having a battle over the AP!!!
the AP speed are 1G connection / 3700 series
    5508 WLC 7.6.120.0
35 student in the class. each class has atleast 2 AP assigned to and able to read the signal from other 4 AP around from different classes
Thanks for every one for your comments
    Regards

35 student in the class. each class has atleast 2 AP assigned to and able to read the signal from other 4 AP around from different classes
Just because a classroom has 2 APs does NOT guarantee the wireless clients, located inside the same classroom, will join to either one of the APs.   It has been well known and documented that a wireless client can join to an AP with the worst signal.
and is there any thing we can do about client hugging the AP!?
No on the Cisco side of things.  You have to ensure the wireless NIC cards' driver of the the wireless clients are up-to-date.
Wireless is a shared medium (aka half duplex).  This means that when one talks (including the AP) all the rest has to "back off" and wait for their turn.  So, in theory, you can't have two wireless clients talking, at the same time, to another wireless client.
It's like going to a restaurant.  If you go to a large restaurant during off peak, the food is prepared more quickly.  However, if you go to the same restaurant during peak hours, your food is prepared much longer.

  • Time Capsule Wireless Speed degradation

    Hi everyone,
    I have a TC 500 GB, creating a Wi-fi network.
I have normally a IMac 20" connected, and sometimes other devices (PC, IPod).
The problem is that the Wireless speed of my connection get slow day by day, and after few day the speed is completely unaccetable.
To restore the original speed I found out two solution:
    -HW reset (disconnect the power supply and then pressing the reset button before reconnecting to the power supply);
-change the firmware (I am continuinously changing between 7.3.1 and 7.3.2).
Does anybody face the same problem? I have already tried to change the wi-fi channel, the wirelles type (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) but nothing changed.
    Thanks for the help
    Andrea

I've had the same problem and I'm on cable. But I have had this degradation of speed on the previous Apple Extreme airport as well as the Time Capsule I have.
I have cable. If I plug directly into the cable modem I will get 30-32 Mbps consistently. The claimed speed I am paying for.
But going to wireless, speed decreases over the day and I have to restart the TC. But as I said I had to do the same with the Extreme n Airport too.
Also no matter what, the Airport's have only ever delivered at best, 18Mbps. They never supply the full speed of the internet connection.
I personally believe the reason the speed decreases is heat. These beautifully designed Airports do get very hot. And I think this is why the speed decreases over the course of the day. If I leave it unplugged over night and boot it up in the morning, I get almost my full 30Mbps for a short time with the cold unit. But then through the day, as I work and actually can tell the connection is slowing, I run a speed test and I'm down to 18Mbps or even slower.
    So I restart.
I think it's heat. Just my guess though.

  • Slow wireless speed with PPPoE

I'm using a WRT54G wireless router configured with PPPoE connected to a DSL router which is acting as the DHCP server. The DSL connection is 10 Mbps. I have two roommates wired to the router and me and another roommate wirelessly. The two computers that are wired directly are getting speeds around 8.5-9.5 Mbps, but I'm getting 3 tops. And lately its diminishing to a few hundred Kbps. while the others are still up at full speed. Is there some setting on the router that is throttling down the wireless speed when using PPPoE? Thanks

Wireless connections are always slower than wired connections, but in most cases, you should be able to achieve at least 50% or more of the wired speed (unless you are so far away from the router that your signal is poor just from distance).
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If your troubles persist, note that with newer routers, some users have found that WPA or WPA2 encryption works better than WEP.
If you still have trouble, for wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
Another option is to try to adjust the QOS (Quality of Service) options on your router.  You might be able to give yourself a higher priority, and the wired connections a lower priority.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Log In Error and Poor Wireless Speed

    Hello Forum Members,
I just picked up a EA6500 wireless router today and I am a bit disappointed. I paid $199 for this router because I was hoping to take advantage of of fast N speeds and the advanced features it offers.
When I first logged in to set up the router, I saw an amber exclamation point with a note that read "Updating Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Service". When I put my password in I was met with a "Unexpected Error" message.
    Any idea what that means?
Any idea how to fix it?
Also, the firmware updater doesn't work.
Minor issues but I would hope these could be resolved. Now on to the more bothersome issue. Wireless speed is poor. I replaced a WRT160NL router with this one. On my old router using WPA2-Personal (AES) I would see speeds of ~300 Mbps. On my EA6500, I see 120 Mbps. I have checked and double checked all wireless and security settings and don't see anything that looks wrong.
Anyone else see this? Any ideas how to resolve?
    Thanks,
    garrman

    Hi Jibjib,
To say I have cascaded the EA6500 into another router would be inaccurate. I have the VDSL line coming into a 2Wire gateway. I decided not to use the wireless built into the 2Wire because it is wireless G only. The 2Wire gateway is handling the DHCP function. I have disabled the DHCP in the EA6500 so it acts like a switch for wired connections and a wireless access point.
Here is a link to my set up http://www.sbbala.com/uverse/  I used methos 2.
As mentioned above, I had a WRT160NL set up in the exact same configuration and it worked great delivering ~300 Mbps to the next room.
I'm not using the EA6500 in bridge mode as that's not what I am looking to do.
I don't think you would call what I'm doing LAN to LAN. I'm not creating a separate wireless network but rather a wireless access point.
The only changes I made from the stock configuration is to set the EA6500 ip address to 192.168.1.252, renamed both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz wireless bands and apply WPA2 security. Lastly, I disabled DHCP on the EA6500.
Not sure why this would work on a WRT160NL and not on the EA6500.
Open the first link provided by jlbjlb or click List of common issues with Linksys Wi-Fi and Smart Wi-Fi Routers. I am sure that with that particular link, you can find the information and or suggestions helpful in resolving the type of issue you are having with the router.

Do the same thing your doing to get each computer on the Internet, one takes turns connecting the cable.
If you want both computers on the Internet and printing at the same time, that's what a router is for.
Just sub one of the PC's above for a printer and you see the idea how it all works.
A Airport Express is Mac friendly method, but if you have computers that have no wireless capability then you will need a Airport Extreme for the Ethernet outports.
You can also buy a third party router from the PC store, that works too, but it's a bit more complicated and you have to install your own firmware updates manually, no Airport Utility to do it for you. But you save money.
The important thing is setting up the router securely, WPA and WEP are both cracked. New Mac's don't even support WEP encrypted because it's worthless and false security.
    What you want is:
WPA(AES) Personal with two passwords, each 20+ random letter, number, symbol characters in length. One password is used for Internet access only the other for Admin router access only, this way a user can't crack the router.
Turn off remote access, don't use hidden network or MAC Address filtering, no defense.
The long passwords are needed to defeat brute force attacks using video card based software, this type of password will take thousands of years to crack.
You can learn more about wireless networking online, have a local PC/Mac guy set you up.
Your computers are much more secure behind a router than directly connected to Internet as the router is a dumb switch, like a large security guard, only allowing certain things to pass and beating down others who try.
Also you don't wear out your Ethernet port like what your doing now connecting the cable all the time.
    Good Luck
