Two time dimensions in one cube

Hi all,
I have the requirement to create a cube for customer mgmt reports. People want to report on registrations and terminations of customers.
So in my cube I need two references to my time dimension (called dim_time). I tried it out and owb accepts the two references to dim_time, automatically renaming the second dimension to dim_time_1. Deployment and loading is also fine.
So from a testing perspective this seems to be the right way of doing it. Has anyone else done something like this and did you see any problems later on?
I want to be save before I go to production.
Another question is about outer join of the second dim_time reference for termination date. All people have a registration date, but most (hopefully) don’t have a termination date. But all of them shall be loaded to the cube. I have not seen a possibility to influence the joins at the cube operator. What’s possible there ?
Regards,
Knut

In order to do two references to the same dimension, you could create two roles in the time dimension. Then, in the cube you can refer to each role. Actually, it's the same you have done, the only difference is using roles make the model easier to understand, because you can give a friendly name to each role.
The second point is about referencing a null date. I think there is no way to do that using the cube object. In these cases, I use to create a date like '31/12/9999' and doing a reference to that. Inside the map you can use an expression with something like that: to_date(NVL(your_date, '31129999'), 'ddmmyyyy'). And, of course, do not forget to insert this date in the dimension.
It's not common to have null data in DW. Any exception should be identified and documented, for example, "Not Available", "Unknown", etc.

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

  • Oracle 11gR2 use the time dimension wizard---the cube didn't show any information!

I created a Time Dimension with the Time dimension wizard  , a category dimension, and a rel_expense cube in OWB 。what I do is following the oracle 11g r1's turtoial
The rel_expense cube has two forigen keys, one is refrence the category dimension's dimension_key(primary key in the category dimension), and the other one  refrence the time dimension's start_day_date(bussniess key in the time dimension).
The result I get is  the rel_expense_tab had datas, but the rel_expense cube had nothing.
.I delete the category dimension , it is the same result(cube rel_expense had nothing).
But if I  only delete the  time dimension,    it is ok(both of them had datas)!!!
So I think is the time dimension's problem ,because the 11g r2's time dimension wizard didnt' generate the dimension_key for time. Is the forigen key(time dimension) i refrenced in the cube is error,so if it is, what should I do?
    SEEK FOR YOU HELP!!!!!
ps:my mother language isn't English ,so it has many erros in the passage

can anybody help me? the measures in my cube were round to integer, i doubt it came from time dimension. did anyone encounts such a senario

  • Slicer Time Dimension Issue with Cube Functions

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help me figure out right approach here.
    Summary:
Using Excel 2013 connected to a SSAS cube as data source, and cube functions with slicers to create a dashboard.
Have following time dimension slicers; Fiscal Year, Fiscal Quarter, Fiscal Month, Fiscal Week & Date, that are used to slice data based on user selection, along
    with a sales measure.
Below is example of Slicer name and CubeMember function for each:
    Slicer_Fiscal_Year:
    =CUBEMEMBER("Cube","[Date].[Fiscal Year].&[2015]")
    Slicer_Fiscal_Quarter:
    =CUBEMEMBER("Cube","[Date].[Fiscal Quarter].[All]")
    Slicer_Fiscal_Month:
    =CUBEMEMBER("Cube","[Date].[Fiscal Month].&[201408]")
    Slicer_Fiscal_Week:
    =CUBEMEMBER("Cube","[Date].[Fiscal Week].&[201509]")
    Slicer_Date:
    =CUBEMEMBER("Cube","[Date].[Date].[All]")
    Problem:
What I am trying to do is to build a table with cube functions that takes the lowest grain of the slicer time dimension selected, shows the current member, plus
the prior 7 so I can have an 8 period trending view table that I will build a chart from. In the above example that would mean that it would look at Slicer_Fiscal_Week since that is lowest grain that has an attribute other than All, and then show me the prior
7 periods. In this case 201509 means Week 9, so I would want to show in table Week 9 back to Week 2. But if Slicer_Fiscal_Week was set to All, along with Slicer_Date, then Fiscal Month would be lowest grain, so I would want to show Fiscal Months from August
(201408) back to January 2014. I know how to use CubeRankedMember to pull the value from what is selected in the slicer, the problem is figuring out how to pass the lowest grain time dimension so that I can use lag or some other MDX function to get the previous
    periods.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Two Time Capsules, now one is not visible.

Our network has two Time Capsules, the model TimeCapsule6,109.
TC #1 is the network's router. Its WAN port talks to the cable modem. One of its LAN ports connects to TC #2's WAN port. TC #2 is in Bridge mode. Both TCs are configured to "Create A Wireless Network" and both wireless networks have the same name etc etc. WiFi works well throughout the house.
TC #1 is backing up a couple of the computers, TC #2 is backing up the others. This has all been working for a couple of months.
Three machines were updated to Mavericks. I updated the fourth last night; it was on Lion (not even ML, just lazy). Before upgrading the other machines I manually started a Time Machine backup. I noticed that this machine hadn't been backed up in a day. When I manually started it, it could not find the backup disk, which was on TC #1. TC #1 didn't even show up in the Finder. That was odd, but I installed Mavericks anyway.
Tonight I started to investigate. I'm on my main machine, an iMac running Mavericks, and I notice that TC #2's icon in the Finder under shared looks like the Time Capsule, but TC #1's icon is an old computer monitor. I can click on the icon for both and connect and see the disks.
I open up Airport Utility. TC #2 is visible, TC #1 is not. I open up the iNet utility and scan the network. Both Time Capsules show up, but only TC #2 identifies as a Time Capsule. TC #1 does show that it's the gateway.
iNet has an "Airport Monitor" option. I select it; only TC #2 shows up.
What's odd is that the network still functions; TC #1 is the router/WAN interface, and all of that still works. I can get to the network from outside with Back To My Mac and I can see my Subversion repository (via http) and all of that. It's just that TC #1 doesn't appear to be a Time Capsule in terms of its visibility to Airport Utility and to Time Machine.
    Ideas?

Maverick has changed a number of things.. which can mess things up.
Firstly reboot the network.. so everything off.. restart the modem.. wait 2min.. restart the TC#1.. wait 2min, restart TC#2.. wait 2min.. then restart the clients.
Do the TC disk show up?
Any continuing issue manually mount the TC disk.. in finder use Go, Connect to Server and type the address,
    AFP://TCname
That will then hopefully get past this problem.

  • Issues with two time capsules in one network

I have two time machines in my environment and issues with dropped connections.
As long as I use only my iMac or Apple MacBook Pro the connections work 90% of the time, I do have some issues with dropped (afp/smb) connections and unable to reconnect every now and then.
However, invariably when I connect a windows machine to the network both time machine connections just die, including the internet connection, I had to restart one of the time machines in order to reconnect. I do have a Guest Network and connecting the windows machine to that network does not affect the time machines availability.
Is having two time machines in the environment not supported?
Why do I experience these drops in connections to the online disks?
Why can't I have a mixed environment (win/mac) connect to the time machines at the same time?
One time machine is the AP and the other one is just extending that network.
I have seen issues in the following scenarios
Copying large amounts of data from iMac to time machine
Copying large amounts of data from one time machine to the other
Connecting a windows computer to the network
    Any ideas?

    Yes

  • Can I (or How can I) chain two Time Capsules on one network for two Macs?

Currently we have one dual-band TC connected to our cable modem. Mac 1 backs up to it. I also have an original TC (one-band) that I would set to 5GHz dedicated for Mac 2.
Would this plan work and provide Backup and Internet to both machines?
    Cable Modem --->TC1--->TC2
Mac 1 would connect to TC1 for Time Machine function and Internet Access.
Mac 2 would connect to TC2 for Time Machine function and Internet Access.
    (---> = Ethernet cable)

No changes needed on TC1, but you may need to use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup to note a few of the settings on TC1, such as the exact type of security that it is using now since that information will be used to configure TC2.
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on TC1 to the WAN port (circle icon) on TC2*. Open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup and TC2 should appear. If not, you'll need to "hard reset" TC2 by holding in the reset button until the amber light begins to blink more quickly, hold another few seconds when you see this and then release
Click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and set Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as TC1 network**
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended unless you plan to add more wireless device to extend the network
    Radio Mode = 802.11n only 5 GHz
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as TC1
Wireless Password = Same password as TC1
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and let TC2 restart. Then power down the entire network. Power up the modem first, then TC1, then TC2, then each device one at a time. Allow a moment or two for each device to fully power up before you start the next.
*When the TC is in Bridge Mode, it really makes no difference which port you use to connect, as they all behave the same. I use the WAN port as a habit for connections like this so that I know at a glance where the connection is coming from. But, you could connect to one of the LAN ports on TC2 if you prefer.
**Assign a different name than TC1 if you want to log on separately to the network that TC2 provides
Be sure to setup Mac2 to backup to TC2 for Time Machine and you should be all set.

  • Two Time Machines and one MacBook Pro ... migrating to a new MacBook Pro

    Background:
I'm a fanatic about backups. I have a Time Machine at home (Time Capsule), and a Time Machine at the work (external USB drive). Both backup my MacBook Pro.
I just got a new MacBook Pro. I plan to migrate my data from my old MacBook Pro (or a clone on a Firewire drive) rather than from one of the Time Machine backups. It's faster than a wireless transfer, and doesn't require all the mucking around with switching to ethernet and back again with Time Capsule.
    The question:
How can I make sure both Time Machine backups recognize the new MacBook Pro as a continuation of the previous data? I could start all over again with two fresh backups, but I would prefer not to.
Is it automatic that both Time Machines will recognize a familiar face with a new hat? Is there some trick to making it work, or, at worst, some trick to fixing it? I've read about changing the expected MAC address in Time Machine, but I don't think that's the best answer.
    Thanks for your help.

You can't and they won't. a new computer will start a new backup sequence and there is no way around that.

there is no better answer than that but even if you do change the recorded MAC address in TM backups, TM will still make a complete full backup of the new computer the first time it backs up.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Two Time Machines for one Mac?

    Folks,
I have a Time Capsule that I do all my back-ups on. Being paranoid, I want to do a second back up and take it off-site, and then rotate the backups monthly. Can Time Machine support two different devices?
    Thanks!
    Craig

Yes, but with a caution. Once they're both set-up properly, all you need to do is use the +Change Disk+ option in TM Preferences. You'll have two separate, independent sets of backups. After each swap, of course, the next backup will be fairly lengthy, as it catches up all the changes from the previous backup on that drive.
But you should probably swap more often than once a month. After several days, and a large volume of changes, TM may do a new full backup instead of an incremental one. This is not documented, and we don't know exactly what the parameters are, but it appears you're safe up to about 10 days.
Another option is to get a portable USB drive. Attach it to your Time Capsule, then use the "Archive" option in Airport Utility > Disks to copy the TC's disk to the USB drive.

  • Connecting two time capsules on one router

I have 2 TCs, TC1 will be used upstairs, TC2 downstairs.  Both connected by cable to Netgear router.  TCs will have different names.  Can I set up each independently, do I need to bridge one?  Any problems with possible interference?  The single strength from TC1 can be seen downstairs but starts to fade quickly as my wife moves her laptop around house.

1). Would my solution be to follow the Airport Utility set up instructions to 'add to network' the new device?
When you first power up the new device and open AirPort Utility, choose the new device and select the "join" option, then you will be given an option to "extend" the wireless network in a later step during the configuration.
2). Could I then run my iTunes library from either the new Extreme's external HD, or the new TC's connected external HD?
Yes, you could move the iTunes library to the new drive and then "point" the iTunes application to the new location. I assume that you already have a backup of the library, correct?
If you are planning to use Time Machine to backup your Macs, keep in mind that Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme are not supported, so the Time Capsule would be the recommended device if you plan to use Time Machine.
Also keep in mind that if you move the iTunes library to the Time Capsule, Time Machine will not be able to backup the library since it is already on the Time Capsule.

  • Two time capsules for one Mac

I have 3 TB data on my Mac. The biggest Time Capsule is 2 TB.
At the moment I do only backups from one of my hard disks with 1 TB. I manage the additional backup of 2TB with Chronosync, but I really would like to do it with Time Machine.
Is there any possibility to add a second (or a third) Time Capsule to backup the rest (additional 2 TB) also with Time Machine?
    Thanks for any help!

You could buy the smallest time capsule and connect a huge USB hard drive and select the USB drive as your back up location. Of course you could just add the huge hard drive to a USB port on your mac and do it that way (cheaper).
If you go ahead and use the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups don't do the first backup wirelessly it will take forever with that amount of data.

  • Two Time Capsules on one LAN = big problem!

I am having a problem with a Time Capsule and a Airport (with a USB disk attached) that are both on the same LAN. We are in a shared office environment on a shared LAN for access to the internet. I have an Airport with a shared disk attached via USB. Another firm on the same LAN has just installed a Time Capsule. When I tried to connect to MY shared disk I get a dialogue window asking for the password to the other firms Time Capsule! It's as though my Mac thinks MY shared disk is connected to their Time Capsule. After checking for any software updates restarting the Airport, disconnecting the USB drive etc several times the problem suddenly resolved on my end. I then tried to connect to the other firms Time Capsule disk from one of their Mac's and now it tries to connect to THEIR Time Capsule disk on MY Airport!!
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Synchronising two time loops in one vi

    Hiii, Everybody
I am facing the problem for synchronising the timed loop, actually, i want one loop to generate the data and another timed loop to used that generated data to make a buffer of type fifo, but when i run these two loops, it hangs, what happens is upto 200 records, it runs good, but after that both the loop gets hanged, instead i want both to run synchronously without hanged, here with this i am attaching my vi and in the vi i have given some description, and i am also attaching drivers, which are in the vi, which help you to run it.

  • Time Dimension- Wk and Month

Hi,Our user would like to see sales performance by time which rolls up to different hierarchy paths, with measures which use dynamic time series, such as MTD, YTD.TIME1) Year --> Qtr --> Month2) Year --> Week of yearMy question is since I have two different hierachy paths, should I put these time dimensions in one cube. Thus, the cube would contains the following dimensions:TIMEinMonth, TIMEinWeek, Measures, Prod, Geogaphy Or should I build two cubes: one has time dimension as in months, and another has time dimension as in week.It looks like the first alternative has lower space requirements overall, but I can't tag both TIMEinMonth and TIMEinWeek as "Time" dimension in OLAP outline. Can I still have YTD for both time dimensions? What should be the best design? Thanks.Sam

Why don't you try with the two different time hierachies under the same dimension?TIME Dimension: Time --> Year_Month --> Qtr --> Month | --> Year_Week --> Week of year Do not aggregate the Year_Week to the Year_Month and you will have the Year_Month data at Time level! In this way your cube would contains only the following dimensions: TIME, Measures, Prod, Geogaphy.I have used this solution several times, but sincerely I haven't tested too much the Dynamic time series functions with this architecture.

  • Referencing two fact keys from one dimension using Dim.Key = Fact.Key1 OR Fact.Key2 possible ?

    Hi all
I need your help for an approach to the following problem. Lets say that i have the following dataset
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201301
    2.500
    201307
    201304
    600
    201307
    201305
    900
    201307
    201306
    4.000
    201307
    201307
    500.000
    201308
    201305
    500
    201308
    201307
    400
    201308
    201306
    300
    201308
    201308
    400.000
    201309
    201307
    300
    201309
    201302
    500
    201309
    201309
    100.000
    201310
    201305
    400
    201310
    201309
    50.000
    201310
    201310
    200.000
In my cube i want the user to select the Accountmonth from one time dimension, but i want some logic to also apply for the ActivityMonth. For one measure if I for example select 201307 i'll get this amount
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201301
    2.500
    201307
    201304
    600
    201307
    201305
    900
    201307
    201306
    4.000
    201307
    201307
    500.000
This is easy - Accountmonth dimension is related to AccountMonth column in the fact table. Now i also need another measure, where the month selected needs to be meet for both accounting and activity month. This is also easy, as i can just reference both
columns in the fact table. Result in this case is then only one row:
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201307
    500.000
Now the tricky part comes when I start to select more months, because the amount i need is where month combinations are shared, so if i for example choose 201307, 201308 and 201309 i don't just want
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201307
    500.000
    201308
    201308
    400.000
    201309
    201309
    100.000
I actually want the amount from which the months is in either accounting or activity, like this
    AccountMonth
    ActivityMonth
    Amount
    201307
    201307
    500.000
    201308
    201307
    400
    201308
    201308
    400.000
    201309
    201307
    300
    201309
    201309
    100.000
I know how to solve it either by having two time dimensions or using MDX, but user should only have to select from one time dimension. So far, solving it using Non-empty/existing in MDX is not performing fast enough. Feedback will be appreaciated if you
have an idea of how to solve this.
