Two Word and Excel icons in Dock after archive and install

Since reinstalling my OS I get two Word and Excel icons in my dock. How can I keep these from being created each time I restart?

Thanks BD, that worked. I thought I had tried that already, but I think I deleted the original icons at first, rather than the doubles. Figured out which was which, deleted them, restarted, and everything looks great. Thanks!

  • Safari 4 Not Installing after Archive Re-Install

OK, so I've just done an Archive Re-install of my Leopard System. I've now update everything to the latest, except Safari, and maybe some other applications that I've missed out.
Leopard is now 10.5.7. I have successfully installed that.
Well, I did this Archive Re-install to get back my Spaces App. Somehow deleted, I just wanted it back, also with the Finder icon which had turned itself into the default icon.
I only just realised that my version of Safari was 3.2 or whatever comes with Leopard as a default. So I decided to try and download and install Safari 4.0.1 (0.1? or 0.2, can't remember)
After downloading it, I deleted my existing Safari (Yeah, problem I think) and installed the new one. After a restart, nothing had changed, and Safari was not in my applications folder anymore.
I want some help with this, it's probably got to do something with the archive install thing, but I really don't want to do that again.. and I don't want to pay $450 NZD for AppleCare so that I can talk to bored and unenthusiastic "helpers" at Apple.
    Thanks, if you can help,
    ~R

Yeah, not a wise idea trashing Safari, now the update won't be able to find anything to update. Not 100% sure, but start up off your Dick again, start the reinstall process and hit custom install and see if you can just reinstall Safari, you will need to uncheck all other boxes except Safari. If this can't be done, just cancel. If it can then just reinstall safari, do not move it from Applications afterwards and restart and repair permissions with DiskUtility.
If this is not an option, search reinstall+pacifist in this forum and it will give you another way to reinstall just Safari. I'm sure one of our Gurus will be here shortly with more advice, or to say if my idea is OK or not.

  • Missing icons on dock after re-load

I am missing my dictonary and dashboard icons after I reloaded the system from my time capsule. Neither of the icons show up in my applications folder. Any ideas?

that's quite strange. enter Time Machine and browse your backups of the Applications folder. are they present in any backups? if not you'll need to reinstall them from the snow leopard install DVD using Pacifist
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
when done with that reinstall 10.6.2 combo update to bring both apps to their current versions.
and once you have them in /Applications just drag them to the dock from there.

    Hello,
    try to read belows:
    Microsoft Outlook Integration
    1. You have installed the following on your workstation:
    • Microsoft® Outlook (supported versions: 2000 SR1 (and higher), 2002, 2003)
    • Microsoft® Word (supported versions: 2000 SR1 (and higher), 2002, 2003)
    • Microsoft® Excel (supported versions: 2000 SR1 (and higher), 2002, 2003)
    2. After installing Microsoft Outlook, you have created an e-mail account so that you can send and receive e-mails.
    3. Microsoft Outlook is set as your default mail client. To check your default mail client, on the Microsoft Windows taskbar, choose Start → Settings → Control Panel → Internet Options. On the Programs tab, Microsoft Outlook should be selected in the E-mail field.
    4. You have administrator privileges for the SAP Business One server and have used the SAP Business One Add-On Server Installer to install default snapshot templates on the server as follows:
    a. Put the CD for add-ons in the CD-ROM drive of your SAP Business One server.
    b. Open the SAP Business One add-on server directory. Double-click setup.exe.
    c. In the first window of the InstallShield Wizard, choose Next.
    d. In the Choose Destination Location window, choose Browse to select the installation folder. Then choose Next.
    e. Follow the instructions in the Start Copying Files window.
    f. In the InstallShield Wizard Complete window, choose Finish.
    5. Before you begin add-on registration, you have closed these programs on your workstation:
    • Microsoft Outlook
    • Microsoft Word
    • Microsoft Excel
Another is that have you correctly installed standalone installer ?

  • How do you get a word and character count of a document in Pages for Mavericks

How do you get a word and character count of a document in Pages for Mavericks?

    Hi jonathan,
I struggled with this one as well, as i'm finishing up a PhD thesis and word counts are incredibly important. Through trial and error i found out that words like 'e.g.' and 'i.e.' count as two words and an ampersand (&) doesn't count at all. That being said, i didn't like the fact that the word count always included footnotes and i was dismayed that i couldn't get an accurate count of words in the main body of my text. That all disappeared yesterday when, by chance, while i was copying a completed chapter and pasting it into my main document, i discovered that Pages can indeed give you an accurate word count excluding the footnotes!  Here's all you need to do:
    1. In pages 5.2, make sure that the Word Count function is first enabled by selecting View --> Show Word Count from the Pages Menu Bar. (If it's already enabled, it will read View --> Hide Word Count, so if that's what it says, then no need to do anything.)
    2. Once enabled, check the Word count that's currently showing at the bottom of the page. That's the word count including your footnotes.
    2. Now, place your cursor anywhere within the current document, then hit command+A (for Select All).
    3. Viola! Your word count now shows the actual number of words within the body of the text only, excluding footnotes!
    Hope that helps!

  • The dock in Maverick is doing strange things to word and excel files

For years (and Mac operating systems), I have kept Microsoft word and excel documents on my doc. I use these documents frequently...click on the file icon in the dock, it opens, I edit and save. Click on the icon again and the saved document opens. so simple.
Since upgrading, I click on the icon, the file opens with a number following the file name (version number I assume) but before docx or xlsx. I edit and save, but get a "save as" box. Now I have to edit the file's name, find the original and replace the original with the new version. Not so simple.
Since I open and close my daily billing log many times a day, this has slowed me down (and irritated me).
I have had no other problems with my Maverick installation and these files are in Word and Excel 2008. This does not happen to powerpoint or any other file I tried so far.
Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Your Mac will generate a new .plist file automatically after restart.
Deleting the .plist file shouldn't delete any app icons from the dock.
Check the startup disk just in case.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you can access the built-in utilities to repair the disk using OS X Recovery

You can delete the empty one by dragging it to the trash ( test everything before emptying the trash)
Merging libraries requires iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  it is the only current solution to merging libraries

  • Microsoft Word and Excel...poof!  Gone from my dock.

I accidentially dragged microsoft word and excel off the dock and it poofed into nowhere.  I found it elsewhere, and dragged it to the desktop.  Tried to open it and got the "application microsoft word quit unexpectedly". So I dragged it down to the dock, and the same thing happened.  I checked the trash, and I didn't throw it away, and even if I did I didn't empty the trash.  Also, I tried to open both a word and excel document, and got the same message that the application quit unexpectedly.  I'm at my wits end.  Somebody please help me!

First, make sure you have the latest updates for Office.
    Second, try reinstalling Office.
Third, try opening them in another account. If it works in another user account, then it is something in Office's preferences.
I have found that when Microsoft products get a bee in their bonnet, nothing can fix it beyond reinstall (even then there are problems).

  • Word and Excel documents name changed after download?

Hi everyone, I have upgraded my Macbook Pro 17 (2010) to latest Mac OS X 10.8, everything seemed to be ok. Later, I noticed that every time I download my Word or Excel documents and save on my desktop, the names of files which are in russian, change to hieroglyphs. Any other files with russian names are saved properly. So I have to rename the files I have downloaded, and if I rename the file with russian, it's ok. What is faulty with my Mac?

    More likely "do not know".
As asked before:  How exactly are you downloading these docs?
If you are using Mail, have you tried webmail instead, or a different browser?

  • Unable to save MS Word and Excel 2010 and 2013 onto the network share

    Hi,
I have read similar cases, but did not work out on the problems we face.
We are using Office 2010 and Windows 7 and it seems like only this combination will encounter saving problem on the networe share (but local / removable disks are fine) -
    Other combinations:
Windows XP and Office 2010 - no problem
Windows XP and Office 2003 - no problem
Windows 7 and Office 2003 - no problem
In Microsoft Word 2010, when saving a new document, it will save but create a 0KB file in the network share drive and I notice the blue menu bar of the Microsoft Word 2010 still displays "Document1" instead the new file name.
And only when I click save icon or exit button, Word actually prompts another "Save As" dialog to save the file, and as a result, I have to save the same file and answer MS Word prompt to replace the existing file - and this is the real time that
the document and its contents really got saved. And the blue menu bar then displays the actual file name.
In Microsoft Excel 2010 (also Powerpoint I suppose so), in saving a new excel file, after typing in a file name for the new file in the network share location, it will prompt a dialog box indicating the "File is currently in use"
Similar to MS Word, it will still create a 0KB file in the network share, and only a second time saving and replace the 0KB file, is able to save the file again.
I have tried a lot of ways from Safe Mode, Disable Add-in, Added Trusted Locations to the network share in MS Word and Excel, Uninstall Antivirus software, redo NTFS permission on the network share server folder, etc but the problem cannot
    be solved.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Daryl

    Thank you Max.
I have tried various storage configurations and share the folders out in Windows Servers and grant user accesses with AD.
These drives configuration involves iSCSI drives, using NAS drive, using internal SAS RAID drives in Windows 2008 servers, all having the same errors, but the latter one was having the most errors almost every first time the users
save their files (includes saving from email attachments), the files will get 0KB.
I have tested LAN cables, switch LAN points in panels and switches, and comes to no avail.
I have patched with the latest office updates (the latest being Office 2010 SP2) also to no avail.
