Typing formulas

I'm using TextExpander to type my superscripts and subscripts for me without going to the Special Characters window. I'm a chemistry student, so I use them all the time. I have two questions:
1) Most importantly, is there a way to type a superscript plus sign (+)?
2) Is there a faster way to input superscripts and subscripts? For example, I'm using the alias sup3^ to get a ³ and et cetera. It's a lot of typing. I know I can shorten the alias, I'm just looking for other options.
Thank you very much
-Scott

Sounds like I can convert a + to superscript in Pages, copy, then paste into a TextExpander snippet.
Let us know if that works. Normally I would not expect this kind of text styling to be transferable that way between apps.

  • How to change the constant with which you multiplied a column

    Hello,
    I'm making a spreadsheet with prices in Dollars and then converting them to Euros. Obviously the exchange rate changes all the time, so I was wondering how I could multiply my column A of dollar prices by the current exchange rate to get my column B of Euro prices and then change the prices when the exchange rate changes.
    Is it possible to just give the new exchange rate so that my numbers in column B automatically change?
    I know I can just always click c1 = b1*1,34 (for example) and then fill down, and then at a later date remove all the prices again and do C1= B1*1,30 and fill down again but I was wondering whether there was an easier way to change the Constant with which you previously multiplied a column.
    Thanks for your help, I hope my question was sort of understandable!
    I've looked but couldn't find a similar post, sorry if I missed it!

    Hi,
    This definitely helps! But is a bit inconvenient when you have lots and lots of rowns in Column A.
    Oh well! I better get started.
    Thank you!
    That's because you are thinking about typing formulas into each an every row by hand. That would be horrendously inefficient and people would despise designing spreadsheets if it had to be done that way.
    Using Jerry's example as the starting point,
    Type the formula =B3*C$1 into cell C3 and hit enter.
    Select cell C3
    Drag down on the little circle at the bottom right corner of the selection box to complete the column. Alternatively, you can Copy then select the rest of the column and Paste.

  • What is happening to Excel Online? Keep freezing and failing

    What's is going on?
    I typed numbers into a cell, it refuses to treat it as numbers, and align it to the left of the cell. And this is in an existing table, and all the old cells (meaning those with values I typed in before) in the same columns are treating the numbers
    as numbers.
    I typed formula (things like "=100+300") into a cell, and it won't do the calculation. Again, the old cells in the same columns worked fine for formulas. Trying to format the cells as numbers doesn't work (and it didn't work for the cell I
    mentioned in my previous paragraph either). And after I tried to delete the content in this cell (or tried to do some other things to the cell), it just freeze the page, with the keep keeping saying that "working on it". Are you going to work on
    it for 24x7 for a simple cell delete?
    I tried multiple times, always the same behavior. I believe these are very basic and simple scenarios.
    Microsoft used to be really good at testing their products. But with these basic scenario broken, it makes me wonder: Are you testing your product at all before you release? Simply because it is web based, now you think you can ship garbage now?

    For excel online I'd ask them over here.

  • MacBook Pro keyboards

    I bought a macbook pro in the US - with a US keyboard - but now that I have moved back to the UK would appreciate being able to use a UK format keyboard. Is there a software fix to change key functions, or do i need a new keyboard? is it possible to change keyboards?

    I've been having the same problem with my MacBook Pro for a few months now. I'm running Office 2004 and OS 10.5, and I generally use an external keyboard (Macally Ice) connected to my machine. The keyboard freezes up most consistently in MS Excel (typing formulas) and MS Entourage (often typing in addresses when composing mail); it seems as though the tabbing between fields sometimes triggers the problem. Interestingly, when the keyboard stops receiving input, the "delete" key still works, though all other keys are unusable. Also, when the issue occurs, my MacBook Pro keyboard stops working. This also happens occasionally when my laptop isn't connected to the external keyboard. The only solution I have found is to click back and forth between windows in another program, though sometimes it will still freeze repeatedly (i.e., for every email address I'm typing in).
    Hope someone has suggestions on how to fix this issue! Thanks,
    SMB

    Hi everyone,
    Is any sort of softwares, like Latex on Window, to type mathematical formula presicely. And if there was any, do you have any instructions for using that? Thanks everyone.

  • Rep-1401: formula name : Fatal Pl/SQL error occured

    Hi,
    I am using report builder 6.0 and recently came across a error while running the report. Rep-1401:<formula name> : Fatal Pl/SQL error occured.
    I created a formula column in the report. In that i have three local variable.
    f_val number := 0;
    s_val number := 0;
    t_val number := 0;
    t_val := f_val/s_val ; --> this gives the above fatal error.
    t_val := (f_val + 1)/s_val; --> this gives the above fatal error
    t_val := f_val/(s_val + 1); ---> no error
    if i change the value of s_val
    s_val := 1;
    t_val := f_val/(s_val - 1) ; ----> this gives the above fatal error.
    Can anyone help me to solve this problem or is it report builder bug.
    Please help me, as i desperately need help.
    Thanks

    Thanks for ur reply.
    I used nvl too, but the same error occurred.
    For the information in my question I by mistake typed
    t_val := (f_val + 1)/s_val; --> this gives the above fatal error.
    but when the value of f_val = zero and s_val is zero why it gives fatal error when i divide, i used nvl on both the variable while dividing but still got the same error.
    but if s_val is greater than zero then no error occurs.
    please help me, I feel it is a bug.

  • How do you use AVERAGE based on values from an IF formula?

    This is probably a very simple thing to do, but I haven't managed to find a solution yet. Someone please help!
    I have a spreadsheet to calculate grades for my students.
    I enter their raw scores, which is then calculated into a percentage (which I then adjust, depending on the raw average).
    I then use an IF formula to award a grade between 1 and 10 based on that adjusted percentage.

    I have simplified the sheet so it contains no split or merged cells, yet still I get the exclamation mark where I want the average. (The exclamation mark says 'Numbers can't be divided by zero'.)

    I guess the basic question is: can you actually use AVERAGE on data that is output by an IF formula?

  • "Eval Parsed Formula Node VI" does not return outputs in predefined order

    I make a data analysis program, where the data consists of some million events and each event has e.g. 4 channels and 1-5 hits on each channel.
    I would like the user to select different expressions of these channels to give coordinates to plot in a 2D histogram (increment a bin in Intensity Graph), e.g. for some experiment you want to show x=ch1-ch2; y=ch1+ch2+ch3+ch4; while in another experiment you want x=ch1-123; y=123-ch2;
    There are other VIs that use static LabView-code for the normal things, but now after a few years of adding to this program I find that it would be quite good with a general plotter and let the user specify simple expressions like this. Also with the "normal" static plots, there is a need to filter out bad data and then it would be much simpler both to program and use if you could write text expressions with boolean logic to combine multiple filters. Making a LabView code and GUI that allows AND/OR/parenthesis combinations of expressions will be quite an effort and not very reusable.
    So, with the above motivation, I hope you see that it would make sense to have a useable string formula evaluator in LabView. I find some info about MathScript's user-defineable functions, but haven't managed to get MathScript working in LV2010 yet (maybe some licensing or installation issues, I think I had it in 8.6). But I think it would be possible to do most of what I want for the display-part (not the filtering) with the simpler Eval/Parse Formula Node VIs and suitable use of the limited variable name space. So I started testing, and found a quite annoying issue with how the evaulator works.
    To the parser, you are expected to send an array of output variable names. But then it ignores this array, and returns one output per assignment/semicolon in the formula, in the order of the formula text. Since the static parts of my program need to know what the output values mean (which of them is x and which is y), I would have to rely on the user not using any intermediate variable and defining x before y. The attached screenshot demonstrates the problem, and also that it has been solved by NI statff in the "Eval Formula Node VI" which does the appropriate array-searching to extract only the pre-defined outputs, in their expected order. But using that VI is about 100 times as slow, I need to pre-compile the formula and then only use the evaulator in the loop that runs over a million events.
    I don't know if I'll take the time to make my own tweks to the parsing stage (e.g. preparation of array-mapping to not have to repeat the search or maybe hacking the output list generated by the parser) or if I'll have to make it in a static Formula Node in the block-diagram (which supports more functions), so that the user has to run with development environment and stop the program to change the plotting function. But I wanted to share this trouble with you, in hope of improvments in future LabView versions or ideas from other people on how I could accomplish my aim. I have MATLAB-formula node possibility too, but is far as I have seen the only place the user could update the formula would then be in a separate .m file, which is re-read only when typing "clear functions" in the Matlab console window. (Having this window is also an annoyance, and perhaps the performance of calling Matlab in every iteration is not great.)
    Besides this issue, it also seems very strange there is virtually no support for conditional expressions or operators in Formula Node evaulated formulas (called Mathematics VIs in the documentation). Maybe using (1+sign(a-b))/2 you can build something that is 0 when a<b and 1 when a>b, but it is not user friendly! Would it really be diffcult to add a function like iif(condition, return_value_if_true, return_value_if_false) to replace the unsupported "condition ? if_true : if_false" operator? Would it really be difficult to add support for the < <= >= > == || && operators? Although compiled to an assemply language, this can't exactly be difficult for a CPU.

    (1) You can put any kind of code inside an event structure with the limitation that it should be able to complete quickly and without user interaction.  For example a while loop for a newton-raphson method is fine, but an interactive while loop where the stop condition depends on user iteraction is not recommended. By default, event structures lock the front panel until the event completes, so you would not even be able to stop it.
    (2) Yes, you can do all that. LabVIEW has no limitation as a programming language. Use shift registers to hold data and state information, the manipulate the contents as needed.
    (3) I would recommend to use plain LabVIEW primitives instead of formula nodes. Show us your code so we can better see what it's all about. Obviously you have a mismatch betweeen scalars and arrays. It is impossible from the given information where the problem is.
    (4) Yes, look inside the nonlinear curve fit VI (you can open it an inspect the code!). One of the subVIs does exactly that. Just supply your model VI.

  • Logical Agregated Column with formula

    Hi all,
    I need to create an agregated column of a field that have a formula. I know you haven't understood anything so here is an example :)
    Source Table:
    A B C
    001 'ZZ' 'ZZ'
    001 'ZZ' 'ZZ'
    001 'ZZ' 'YY'
    002 'XX' 'TT'
    003 'JJ' 'JJ'
    Desired Result: (E is--> SUM(CASE WHEN B=C THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)) )
    D E
    001 2
    002 0
    003 1
    What I have tried:
    In the Business Model, I created a column with the option: "Use existing logical columns as the source" where I typed the formula: SUM(CASE WHEN B=C THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)), that rises the following error: "State: S1000. Código: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: S1000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 22019] Function Sum does not support non-numeric types. (S1000)".
    I changed the formula adding CAST operators for 1 and 0 to be INT but it didn't work.
    * Creating the column "E" in Answers with the formula -->SUM(CASE WHEN B=C THEN 1 ELSE 0 END)) works but I would like to have "E" already in the repository.
    Thanks in advance.

    Use (CASE WHEN B=C THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) using physically mapped columns and not through "Use existing logical columns as the source".
    Then specify sum as aggragation rule.

  • Is it possible to copy and paste a formula without changing the cell references?

    I am trying to paste a formula to a cell adjacent to where it currently is but when I do, the cell references in it change. I am trying to get exactly the same formula in the cell (without re-typing it).

    dedwards96 wrote:
    Just another quick question, is it possible to make a large number of cell references 'absolute'?
    Individual cell references in formulas may have four distinct states: relative, absolute column, absolute row, or absolute column and row. These are set using the popup menu on the reference itself. Click on the reference in the formula and choose one of the four states from the popup menu.
    Once set, you can fill the formula into the rest of a column or row using the Fill Handle (small circle at the lower right of a selected cell). Cell references in the new copies of the formula will remain absolute or adjst to their new position dependent on the setting for each reference. You can also copy and paste the cell (single click to select it, command-C to copy) with the same results.
    You can also copy/paste without changing the formula's cell references if you select the formula (Drag across the formula in the entry bar, copy, press tab to deselect and reconfirm the formula in the original cell) rather than the cell. Pasted into a new cell, the formula will appear as if you typed it in exactly as it was in the original cell—neither absolute references nor relative references will have changed.

  • How to copy table from one sheet to another making formulas relative to current sheet

    I'm truly sorry if this has been answered within this forum but I've been reading these posts for the last hour and nothing. Ok so here's my issue:
    I'm trying to do a budget spreadsheet. My ss contains sheets with each one representing a month. So sheet 1 is called January, 2 February etc.
    I have two table in each sheet, one with a list of expenses and the other is a subtable with that references the first table for special expenses. The second table is identical in functionality in each sheet so I do a copy from January into February. However, when I copy into Feburary, all my formulas still point to 'January::' and I have to go and remove the 'January::' from each cell.
    Is there any way to copy the second table and make it relative to the sheet that it's in? It seems simple and maybe I'm doing something fundamentally wrong but I can't find the answer anywhere.

    I made a simple version of what I think you are describing:
    I gave each table a name "Tabl" and "SubTable"
    SubTable cell A1 is assigned as follows:
    A1=Table :: A1
    Then I duplicated the January Sheet by highlighting the sheet and typing the key command <COMMAND>+d (or selceting the menu item "Edit > Duplicate"):
    Then I change the name of the new shee from "January -1" to "February"
    The relative reference should already exist.
    You can confim this by changing the contants of the informaiton in cell A1 of Table in the "February sheet

  • Can't find where to add formulas to a table in Pages 5

    I have a Pages 09 document with tables set up to track assignments and point values for the classes I teach. I prefer to work in Pages and not Numbers because of some page formatting issues. I used to be able to highlight point values in a column and use a formula to get the sum in the cell below. I cannot find this option in Pages 5. I also cannot figure out how to turn on autofill for my tables - I used to start typing a few letters, and it would suggest words from my other cells which cut down a lot of typing time. Any help would be much appreciated! I hope these features are still available, hidden in a new spot.

    Try this Pages Help link. Under Add Tables and Charts, there's a Formulas and functions section.

  • Dynamic name in formula column header

    Greetings, i have a question - is it possible to create dynamic header of formula column?
    For example - year on the form is 2012? in the header i want something like ratio "current year picked from forms year" to "current year -1", i.e. ratio 2012 to 2011
    Is it possible?

    It looks like forms are not supporting text functions like FR yet, I gave it a try <<MemberName("<Formname>","<POV DIM Name>)>> in the formula header area and it didn't like it. It is just displaying what ever I typed in there.

  • How to copy and paste formulas between documents in numbers 3.0?

    I am unable to copy and paste formulas between 2 documents in numbers 3.0?

    Hi Hans,
    I can get a reference error here if the destination table does not have that range available while the source table does.
    Are you sure your desination table has exactly the same structure and dimensions as your source table?
    If it does, copy/paste via the Formula Editor should work. It works reliably here.
    Also the formula in your latest post looks as if it might be corrupted-- lots of extra spaces (it seems).  Did your orginal formula have those?
    To sort this out, suggest turning off 'Use header names as labels' in Preferences.
    If you end up with a formula in a cell as just Text (as Ian describes that's what happens when you copy from Numbers 2) you can convert that text to a formula by double-clicking the cell, clicking just before the text so that the insertion point appears in front of it and typing =. That activates the Formula Editor with the formula in it, which you can accept by clicking the green checkmark or hitting return.

  • Creating formulas in Numbers - quick key to reference cells

    Former Excel person, moving over to Numbers -- very simple question on how I can use keystrokes to reference cells when creating a formula, rather than typing in the cell or using the mouse. In Excel would just type "=", then could use the arrows keys to move around and go into the first cell for the formula, type "+", then arrow around to the second cell and hit Enter.

    As Yvan has pointed out, Numbers offers an alternative to large spreadsheets, that being multiple tables & sheets. As you point out, moving around a large spreadsheet is not fast, even when using cursor keys (which I am assuming are the same thing as arrow keys, there being just the one set on my keyboard).
    Assuming you can break your large spreadsheets down into smaller ones, you may find that navigation is remarkably quick because you can click on any table in any sheet to immediately jump to another one (even when creating cell or range references) rather than having to transverse large areas of a single spreadsheet one cell at a time.
    If you are interested in exploring this approach, you may find my comments in the thread Generating values for grades useful as a description of how this can be applied when creating cell references in Numbers.
    It may not be the right approach for your needs, but unless you know about it, you can't compare it to other approaches, right?
