Ultra 40 + Type 7 Keyboard & Windows XP?

Hi, I have recently purchased Ultra 40 Workstation w/ Type 7 Keyboard and Mouse.
Since I do see that Windows XP x64 is certified os for Ultra 40 Workstation and Type 7 keyboard comes in both Unix and Windows style, I have not yet been able to use extra keys on Windows XP.
Is there any driver that make extra keys of Type 7 keyboard usable in Windows XP?
I understand that Sun is Solaris company, but since Ultra 40 supports windows XP, I think it won't hurt to ask. :)
Thanks.
Sang

The Unix style and the US/Windows style keyboard layouts have nothing to do
with the extra Sun keys on the left of their keyboards.
The different styles have different placements for a few of the 'normal' keys,
such as: ESC, CapsLock, Backspace, left-CTRL, and a very few others.
The layouts would be of interest to a touch-typist, perhaps, more than to anyone else.
Solaris uses the special Sun keys.
Windows never uses those keys.
(... and I really, really miss ths cut/copy/paste keys when I'm using an OS other than Solaris-on-Sun)

  • SUN ULTRA 5 type 5 keyboard and mouse

    Hi.
I have some questions about old SUN TYPE 5 keyboard and mouse.
I have got an very old ULTRA 5 machine just for little "playing" with just such type of keyboard and mouse ( SUN type 5).
I am wondering , if this input devices will fail, is it possible to get some other compatible type of keyboard and mouse for it ???
I am not SUN specialist , so I dont know - is it also possible to use also SUN type 6 keyboard / mouse with my ULTRA 5 workstation??? The connector type seems similar like a PS/2 , but I think there is no way to use standard PC PS/2 keyboard/mouse with it , or is it ??? Whats the best solution , where to get ULTRA 5 compatible keyboard/mouse ? Thank you veyr much for your answer.

    Hello,
a Type 5 keyboard (lacks the power-on key) and mouse might work. The preferred types are Type 5c or Type 6.
Most OHCI compatible USB cards work (http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/products/hardware.html), but the USB keyboard and mouse aren't usable until the operating system (and USB driver) have been loaded (you have to configure keyboard and mouse manually).
I would recommend that you get a Sun Type 5c or Type 6 keyboard/mouse from second hand e.g. eBay. They are not that expensive anymore.
Another choice is to use the Ultra 5 via the serial console (text mode) and then use a X-Server to access the system (after installation of Solaris) via the network.

  • Ultra 5 - Type 6 Keyboard

I don't really know if I'm in the right place here, but I'm trying to install Ubuntu Linux on an old Ultra 5, but I'm having some difficulties with the keyboard. I have a type 6 (I'm assuming, in a standard U.S. English Layout) and Ubuntu only lists Type 4 and 5. I'm just hoping to find the next closest match. As I said, I've tried both as U.S. Standard English, neither seemed to work, the keys were all mapped wrong. Any help is appreciated, and pictures have been included below, hopefully that helps. Thanks.

  • Ultra 2 creator 3d with type 6 keyboard

    Hi there,
I have an old ultra 2 I want to install on with a type 6 keyboard. It seem to recognize the keyboard however when I try to hit stop to get into open boot it just continues on its merry way and tries to net boot, of course this fails...
How do I get it to let me into open boot? Do I need an older type 5 keyboard?
    Thanks

    Hello Ken,
the type 6 keyboard should work with the Ultra 2.
Did you press STOP and the A key simultaneously ?
When you review the banner, is the keyboard detected ?
Check if any of the keyboard plug pins are bent.
Did this (and haroldb's simultaneous response) answer your question ?

  • Sun Type 7 keyboard hangs on Ultra 24

    Hello,
recently I hooked up a new Sun Ultra 24 system running Solaris 10/08.
An original Sun Type 7 keyboard including Sun mouse is connected to the computer.
Every once a while the keyboard gets disconnected so I have to replug the USB. As far as I am concerned no log entry is produced.
Has somebody an idea how to exclude a hardware issue? If the keyboard is connected to an iMac I noticed no problems.
    Many thanks in advance!

i am also having that same problem, the keyboard ends in -03. i've gone back and forth with sun, no resolution. i'm getting sun to bring a FE onsite so they can have fun with it. i have used update 5, 6 and 7. still nothing, i can use an install disk and go to command line but that's it. sun has yet to inform me that's a problem with this keyboard type on ultra 24.
    i'll send any updates

  • Ultra 60 elite 3D keyboard

    Hi,
I have a Ultra 60 Elite 3D (DIN-8 connector), and the reference manual says that only can be used with type-5 keyboard. Does this means that I can use any type-5 keyboard? Will type-5c work? Can be used any other keyboard?
    Thanks a lot.

The miniDIN keyboards will all work with the Ultra-60.
You will not damage anything by using a different model.
The type-5 used DIP switches to configure it for your geographical locale language layout.
The type-5c used jumpers and DIP switches to configure it for the geographical locale.
The type-6 were hard-coded for various geographical locales
and you would purchase the appropriate 'Country Kit' ,
whichever might be needed (and will have the correct keycap labels in place).

  • Type 7 keyboard

I have a new Ultra 40 with a type 7 keyboard, running Redhat Linux Enterprise 4. I would like to map the "sun" keys to function just like they did on Solaris (copy, paste, front, etc.)
Any ideas on how to do this?

Just curious... I have the same exaact issue. Were you ever able to get it resolved? Sun Ultra-40, running RHEL4. I am stumped.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Very disapointed in Lenovo's service on my T430 machine type 2342CTO with Windows Pro 7 64 bit

I have been a ThinkPad user since the first model 700.  I have always liked them and when I have had to use other laptops I found them inferior.  However one thing my team has been telling me in the past year or two is that they do not want to purchase anymore Lenovo ThinkPad's.  They have told me that the service and support has been greatly degraded.  I was hesitant to agree with them until my present experience.  We purchase all of our ThinkPad's with a 4 year on-site warranty.  We have people who are in the field and when their computer goes down we need to get it back up and running ASAP.
Three weeks ago my hard drive started to give me some problems and  one day after shutting down the computer a message came up that it needed to run Checkdisk which it did.  I was able to keep it going and I did have a backup.   I contacted  the 800 number to talk with a service person and they ordered up service for the replacement of the hard drive and also to replace the fan and sent me the system disks for the T430.  Two days later the insight service person showed up with the parts.  The disks showed up as well via UPS.  The service person replaced the fan and the HDD.  There were 4 DVD's for the system disks.  He started the rebuild and asked if I could finish it and I said I could with no problem.  He left.  I continued the process.  After the 3rd DVD it asked to put in the 4th and when I did a message said that this was the wrong DVD.  I tried all the other 3 with the same response.  I tried building it from scratch again and the same problem.  I called support again and the guy I spoke with thought that I must have a bad DVD and he would send out another set.  That set of 4 DVD’s arrived the next day which I was very thankful for.  He told me that they could only guaranty 2 days.  I thought OK we should be up and running shortly.  The same problem occurred again.  Bear in mind that both sets of these DVD's were all labeled for the ThinkPad T430 machine type 2342 which was my laptop and for Windows Pro 7, 64 bit.  I called Lenovo and this time the tech I spoke with said that there was another set of Disks for my machine that should have been sent.  Of course I was frustrated but there was not a lot I could do about that and I asked if they could make sure that they were overnighted to me so that I would be sure to get them on the next day which was Thursday.  He told me that he could not do that, that they could only guaranty 2 day. I called the next morning to get the tracking number which they gave me and it was supposed to be delivered on Friday which I was very thankful for.  That was Good Friday.  However UPS had some severe weather at their hub in Kentucky and everything was delayed and the disks did not show up until Monday.  I had now been down a whole week from my first call the Monday before.
The new set of disks was 3 DVD’s labeled for the T430, Machine type 2342 and Windows Pro 7, 64 bit.  I started the build process.  It continued to work but I made a mistake in the order of disks so I thought that these disks have a problem too.  I called Lenovo and they said that I should just send the system in for depot repair.  I said that will take at least until probably Thursday.  The guy I was speaking to said that I should have it back by Wednesday.  I asked if there was any way that I could send it to them directly that day.  He said no I could not, I had to wait for a box.  I asked if there was anyway to expedite the process and he spoke to his manager and his manager said that the level of service that was on the machine would not allow for any faster service.  The also told me that my service contract would allow me to take it to an authorized Lenovo service center around me.  I said to him that they probably have a queue as well and that I will have to wait for that.  As an aside note we did try service like this with one of our other ThinkPad’s that had a problem and the place messed up the system and we ended up at the end of the day having to send it to their depot for repair.  I hung up and though let me try these disks one more time.  I did and I saw my mistake and the system loaded up the DVD’s properly.  I was getting excited that I could be up and running shortly.  However my excitement was short lived.  Once it started to reboot and expand the installation the drive failed and said that it had to run Checkdisk.  It did and once again there were all kinds of orphaned files etc.  I had to reboot and run it from the DVD’s again and I went through the whole process once again.  The system went into a complete failure and would not do anything.  I called back support with my case # and gave them this information.  The box came the next day and I packed it up and sent it off.  I then started tracking it and it arrived on Wednesday as expected.  Then I wanted to go to the site and track the progress of the repair.  The document you have to fill out and send back with the system gives information on where to go on the web to track the process.  My shows that it arrived on Wednesday 4/8 as expected.  The first message shows “Machine being repaired” at 08:52.  Then I checked later in the early evening hoping to see shipped back to customer.  However what I did see was the following message “Hold for Parts – Service call is on hold until parts arrive”.  Then I kept tracking it and saw another entry on 4/10 at 02:01:54 which was the same “Hold for Parts – Service call is on hold until parts arrive”.  That was of course Friday.  I called the service and they told me that they were waiting on parts which they could not tell me what parts and that there was nothing that they could do.  I then asked if there was anyway to expadite this and the girl I spoke to said that she would seek to accelerate this to another level and that I would get a call from Lenovo in the next 2 to 3 business days!  I said to her that you really mean that that is accelerating it and she said yes.  Yesterday I received a call from an automated attendant, not a real person who told me that they were waiting on parts for my computer and that it could be “5 to 7 business days before they receive the part”.  I could not believe this.  I called again today 4/15 and asked if anyone could tell me the status because the website told me very little.  I told the girl that I was speaking to that I had received this automated attendant telling me that a part would take 5 to 7 business days more.  I asked her if Lenovo kept parts and she said yes but that this part was not in stock.  I asked her what the part was and she was able to find that it was the main system board that had to be replaced.  I said you have already had the unit for 1 week now at depot repair and never mind the fact that I have been without my computer for 2.5 weeks.  She told me that there was nothing she could do and that I had to wait on the part.  That is where this case sits at present.
I am very very unimpressed with Lenovo’s service.  And furthermore there is no one to talk to about it at Lenovo who gives a care.  I really did not know where to air my grievances with how this case is being handled.  I thought maybe the forum would be a place.  At least others will learn of my dilemma and maybe others have experienced the same thing.
I still like my ThinkPad but the service of Lenovo has become very poor at best.  The guy that is my technical manager has had a poor experience of late ordering up some other Lenovo products and he does not want to purchase anymore and these were for new product.  They sent the laptop with the wrong software loaded and then said no problem we will send you a new set of disks to load.  He refused and said you have to fix this because it was Lenovo’s mistake.  It takes time to load software and time is money.  I believe we will be leaving the Lenovo field if things continue.  I hope and trust that others will not experience the same treatment as I/we have.  I wonder if Lenovo will even respond to this post.

I had a real problem with wireless performance on multiple ThinkPads with Win7 until I realized there is a new (or maybe changed implementation) power setting in Win7 which was affecting it.
If you go into Control Panel -> Power Options and click "Change plan settings" for your current power plan.
On the next screen click on "Change advanced power settings"
On the next screen expand "Wireless Adapter Settings" and then "Power Saving Mode"
Make sure it is set to Maximum Performance.
Not sure if this will help your particular problem but hope it does.

I just updated to ios8 on my iPad and the keyboard blocking the text is driving me nuts!  You used to be able to scroll the page up which would allow one to see what you were typing.  Ugh! Help.  splitting the screen is not an option. It used to work fine

  • Trouble setting up type of keyboard after migration

    Hi everyone,
I just migrated all my hard disk from a MacBook to a MacBook Pro. Now, I used to have a US keyboard, and now I have a Spanish ISO keyboard. But it seems to have kept the US keyboard setup, so that when I hit certain keys, I get some other sign on the page.
I went to System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse, but there isn't any option for selecting another type of keyboard, though the Help says there should be.
Any idea what to do? Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

    Bonnie,
Open up System Preferences-> International and scroll down near the bottom and check "Spanish ISO". Check the box a the bottom that says "Show input menu in menu bar" Close International preferences. Now next to the clock, change the flag from US to Spanish.

  • MacBook Pro - After Battery dies I'm not able to type in login window, until forcing a restart

Hi, as mentioned in the header : MacBook Pro - After Battery dies I'm not able to type in login window, until forcing a restart
After the battery drains to 0% the computer switches off.... *Makes sense*
Once I put the charger power chord back in for an extended period of time I hit the power button and then see the login screen.... *Makes sense*
However it won't let me type into the login box therefore having to force a restart and lose any saved data or data open when it died of battery. *WEIRD*
This happens every time my computer runs out of battery. I understand that obviously not letting the laptop die is a good idea, however it seems like there is something wrong as it allows me to login yet won't let me type anything...
Any solutions? Anyone else experience this?

    Hi s4mboy,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I'd start with resetting the SMC and PRAM on the MacBook Pro:

  • Keyboard window

    Hi,
I'm practicing step input into score via the keyboard window. Two questions: there is a button labeled Q at the far right. I assume that it refers to quantization somehow, I've checked the manual etc. but am unable to figure out what its for. Also I notice the keyboard goes down to C1. What if I want to enter notes lower than that? is there any way to shift the octaves represented or to elongate the keyboard?
    thanks, Ray
    dual 1.8 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Justin,
Thanks for your feedback. I want to 'intuitively' enter notes into score as I'm going along, without recourse to other machinations. My work around has been to enter the notes from my USB midi keyboard, rather than the keyboard window, and use the keyboard window to determine note lengths and so on. This actually works better for me than picking out the notes from the keyboard window with a mouse.
Interestingly, I've just been reviewing the 'transpose' function in Logic in all the various windows, to clarify it in my own mind. In my program, the transpose in object parameter in Arrange affects playback only, but not the notes as they appear in score. On the other hand Transpose in Song Styles in Score only affects the score display, but not the playback or the way the notes appear in Matrix. Region transposition in Arrange affects the notes in score and playback, but not the way they appear in the Matrix editor. Changing the key signature in Score only affects the score display. Other methods of transposition I've found affect display in both editors, and playback.

  • Keyboard window does not work.

When recording a track using the Keyboard window, all notes clicked with the mouse are recorded just as very short notes. It's as if the mouse was always let up right away after clicking during recording. I'm having this problem with an eMac - there is no problem on other Macs I've tried.
I cannot figure this out...thanks for helping...

OK. I think I finally figured this out...
The specific file I was using was "2-1 Eyewitness Starting" from the CD that comes with the Apple Training Series book "Garageband 2" by Mary Plummer, that is published by Peachpit Press.
The problem exists in some of the files from this book (but not all). I'm wondering if these files are in some way corrupt, or possibly created in an earlier version (1.0?) and are not converted properly.
Anyway, I have no problem with newly created files, so I'm satisfied.
    Thanks.
